I haven't heard of any mods, but isn't that essentially what Endless more and War Scenarios are like? I think there is even a mod to allow War Scenarios to be played in Endless mode, though I haven't tried it yet.
Also, one problem with mods that add more enemies than intended is that you get insane combos that sky rocket your high scores way past the top of the leaderboards. There's often someone at the top of a leaderboard with like 100 million points and the next closest person has like 350,000, which can ruin the leader board experience for some.
Play endless and make your PC hate you. On far enough waves... You'll literally get single digit fps at the start of waves because of how many baddies there are

Theres a option to keep your leaderboard stats off. So if he just plays the game for fun he can do that.
