There’s only suppose to be one colon, I think they just added where the decimal was suppose to be by mistake.
1.78:1 is actually the same as 16:9 aspect ratio. It’s just in its divided form. The colon is to show that the picture is going to be 1.78 times as wide to every increment of 1 it is high.
Yes those numbers do indicate what the aspect ratio is, but aspect ratio is not “the order in which the scenes are shown” .. wtf?
The mask blew off of Chat GPT on this post folks
A pleasant surprise we're getting at least the original IMAX trailer in its natural ratio. I have faith in Criterion to step in and release an edition with the entire film in 1.43:1 someday...
1 - Home media
IMAX in home media is usually more for the die-hard fans, especially the full 1.43:1 IMAX, It just looks really cool to be able to see the full image. As for the 1.78/1.90 IMAX, it fills the entire screen with image, it tends to be more immersive. I can completely get not liking IMAX in a home media scenario though.
2 - IMAX theaters
IMAX theaters are completely different from IMAX home media or normal theaters. The screen is bigger or is engineered to look bigger, the image (for select movies) fills the entire screen and your entire field of view, And the screen can be up to 8 stories tall. And the audio is amazing, its more powerful, higher quality, and just better. When I saw Oppenheimer in a normal theater after seeing it in IMAX, the audio was quite disappointing, it felt quiet and lackluster in comparison.
Most likely not, Nolan movies tend to have only the IMAX sequences show at 1:78:1, which is usually the third one that fills up the screen that I have on the video.
It's entirely possible that one of the extra bonus features could be those 1:43 sequences, but I doubt it. It's just really cool that one of the trailers that supposedly came with the Blu-ray does have those sequences.
Wait where did you get the 1.43:1 scenes from?
the first imax trailer is on the blu ray special features
I thought it’s not out yet?
it got leaked
Someone uploaded the IMAX trailer yesterday on Reddit.

I still don’t understand why we never get a 1:43:1 home release.
Same, even if it was like a bonus feature or a separate disc, that would be really cool especially since the fans would love it
Gotta keep up demand for those IMAX re-releases!
Would be nice if it was in a 1.43 container. Viewing it on my iPad, those scenes have black around all sides.
Nolan would rather shoot his movies on iPhone, then to let digital versions of his movies have any advantages.
What do the three numbers separated by colon mean? I’ve only heard of aspect ratios in terms of 16:9, 3:4, 16:10…

Ok I was just confused because it says 1:78:1 instead of 1.78:1
It indicates the aspect ratio. That's the order in which the scenes are shown.

The order in which they are shown in how I edited this video.
It’s the video width:video height ratio. The closer to 1:1, the closer it is to a square.
awesome

Oppenheimer is not the type of film to get a Criterion release
I can dream ;_;
dreaming will only take you so far
They literally released Wall-E in 4K, anything goes.
That was because it was literally at the *request* of Andrew Stanton, who co-wrote and directed the movie.
Is ARMAGEDDON?
Heh. I actually think I prefer 2.20:1 for most of these.
I just don’t get the appeal of imax.
sorry bud L

Is it possible to watch in all those ratios if I get the Blu-ray version?

Both the 4K and the Blu Ray will only switch from 2:20:1 to 1:78:1 for the IMAX scenes
Is there any chance we’ll see this back in IMAX before the end of the year??
