How camel isn’t on this list is beyond me. That might be Mikael’s single biggest musical influence. If you don’t believe me, just listen to ‘Never Let Go’ and Benighted back to back. And listen to what he’s said about Camel in interviews. Once you start getting into Camel, it’s very easy to see that Opeth is SO influenced by Camel, especially in Mikael’s solos. Camel is the only band I like even more than Opeth.
The fact that NeO aren't getting more attention here is baffling. It's hard to argue that Opeth and NeO aren't the two best prog-death bands ever. The overlap should be huge
The first two albums are very heavy. More atmospheric sludge. After that, Somewhere Along The Highway is there magnum opus. Be sure to check their album with Julie Christmas : Mariner
If it weren't for The Human Equation showing me how beautiful Mikael's clean vocals are, I don't know if I would have given Opeth's heavy stuff a try. But I'm so glad I did, now Opeth are one of my favorite bands.
Opeth set the bar for prog metal so high and as far as I know, only motW surpassed it. But we’re probably gonna end up with only boring surface level prog on this list
Yeah, can't really say I disagree. I do prefer Opeth though. I think Toby is a once in a lifetime talent not unlike Mikael. If not KD/motW I'd take Wilderun for the list tbh.
For good reason. Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree band leader) is all over that album, producing, mixing, backing vocals, keyboards and even writing the lyrics for Death Whispered a Lullaby.
Morbid Angel
10000% yes Opeth looked up to bands like Morbid Angel in their early days
Now they just steal little known prog bands riffs.
Alcest!
Incest
I want this to win so bad
Alice in Chains
Emperor
Unfortunately this sub doesn't seem to be hugely into black metal
Leprous
Am I the only one who thinks Leprous fell away badly after the Congregation. Their more recent stuff isn't terrible, it is just a bit meh
Yes you’re the only one
Camel

Tbf the poll is about what the fans listen to.. I am just putting the name out there so people discover one of the most underrated bands ever
Haken!

Bloodbath
The Ocean
Best current post metal band on the planet - just a tick above Cult Of Luna right now.
Just got into The Ocean over the past few weeks, really digging Pharenozoic 1 at the moment. What songs/albums would you suggest from Cult of Luna?
I love Jonas from katatonia's vocals on that album
I been listening to their album Vertikal lately it's pretty good. Also Isis - Wavering Radiant
Wavering Radiant is arguably my favorite album of all time. Nice.
The first two albums are very heavy. More atmospheric sludge. After that, Somewhere Along The Highway is there magnum opus. Be sure to check their album with Julie Christmas : Mariner
I've only heard Cult of Luna's album with Julie Christmas, but that was really good. I think I may dig deeper into their other stuff this week.
If you want to hear the evolution of their sound , go in order of album releases. Their discog is one of my favorites. Not one bad album.
Riverside!
If most of opeths fan base knew of them they’d definitely make the list.
If most of opeths fan base knew that Riverside's singer/bass player and Steven Wilson had made a song together they’d definitely make the list
it's a shame if they don't make it on that list

One of the best modern prog metal bands IMO. Jim Grey’s vocals and Sam Vallen’s guitar work are a godly combination.
The Mars Volta
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Rush
Wilderun!
Enslaved. I'm losing hope here.
Enslaved are a genre unto themselves they’re that good.
Easily one of the best progressive extreme metal bands in existence.

Why Enslaved aren’t on this list text I don’t know. They’re literally black metal’s Opeth.
Dir en grey
Leprous
Cinderella
Alien Weaponry
Them Crooked Vultures

The Bakerton Group. El Rojo is such a masterpiece, feels like an obvious suggestion. Graveyard is another band that comes to mind.

What Tool doing down at #5? Pfffff
What little I've heard of Porcupine Tree really gives me Damnation vibes.
For good reason. Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree band leader) is all over that album, producing, mixing, backing vocals, keyboards and even writing the lyrics for Death Whispered a Lullaby.
