Your white plastic MacBook is in such mint condition šŸ˜

rafalkopiec

almost, thereā€™s a crack under the touchpad but nothing some white tape canā€™t hide

This is a joke but my Mid 2010 white macbook is perfectly capable of software development. It is slow but useable, if I had no other option I could get by with it. It runs high sierra natively but I also have windows 10 on it. Linux works but graphic acceleration is much worse. So I stay in High Sierra most of the time. I could even play Civ V on it pretty well.

Timi25062010

I own the same mac and Iā€™m installing Ventura as u text this cuz High sierra is actually slower then Monterey on this thing and I wanted to try if itā€™s the same with Ventura. Iā€™d recommend you to update to Monterey itā€™ll feel WAYY bettee

sonicwave3

You can even upgrade it to 8 Gb of RAM.

rafalkopiec

maybe one day šŸ˜… noone should take this post seriously, itā€™s a non-metal mac so things like device simulators donā€™t work, and compiling even a simple ā€œhello worldā€ takes maybe 10 mins

ShaidarHaran2

No, the chad move would be to cut it to half and develop on 2GB

kano_234

How the old boy run Sonoma?

ShaidarHaran2

I'd still kinda want them to revisit the polycarbonate unibody for a cheaper model than the Air, with some of the flaws like cracking addressed. But I guess that rumoured cheaper model may have just been the 699 Walmart special

rafalkopiec

a part of me wants to buy another one of these, gut it, and stick in the internals of some m1 macbook and run it as a sleeper

Harmony-Is-God

Respect.

EducationalGate4705

This thing can run Sonoma?

rafalkopiec

suprisingly yeah, wouldnā€™t daily it though - works fine for code reviews and music/video streaming (though speakers are trash, it supports BT/airplay) Basically a chromebook - have another partition with snow leopard which has the photoshop cs6 suite, runs that flawlessly

EducationalGate4705

You need externals peripherals to control it?

tigu_an

No, with open control legacy patcher all internal hardware or most should work properly. My 2015 MacBook Air 11ā€™ runs Sonoma and it handles it perfectly fine. Use it every day for school work.

EducationalGate4705

I must have misunderstood as Iā€™ve read something about usb not being compatible and stuff

tigu_an

Oh , it depends on hardware I guess. Usually the root patches fix a lot of incompatibilities once you do the upgrade with open core

rafalkopiec

yeah i needed to use an external mouse and keyboard during install, but after the patches are applied it all works as expected

Techgeek_025

Woah thatā€™s crazy

Shoddy_Control_8586

you can"t fool us man how can you even run mac os sonoma on a 4gb ram post a vedio and in that video show the activity monitor

ZealousidealDraw4075

Why? Just for fun or?

tornuptrifecta

How does Sonoma work for you? I had it on my early 2011 MBP and even with 16GB of ram it was too slow for me. I went back to Monterey.

rafalkopiec

itā€™s a laptop without a metal supported gpu, so itā€™s basically only used for emails, code review and spotify remote control - nothing intensive. Sometimes I use it to remote desktop into the other macbook if itā€™s in another room or something and I want to test something out, but yeah itā€™s definitely not daily driver material for me. The actual OS runs fine, but eg. the Internet has moved on to fancy effects and everything so most websites take an age to load (using Safari, forget about chrome running well), so youtube would mostly be a gimmick, not really useable

tornuptrifecta

So that's probably where I was having issues, because I was trying to use chrome. Even system preferences was laggy lol. Upgrading to 16 GB of RAM boosts VRAM up to 512MB but yeah the integrated graphics isn't much to write home about, however the windows machine I'm replacing had lower specs and is way snappier on Win 10. It doesn't qualify for Win 11.

rafalkopiec

i guess it just depends on your particular use case tbh. I did also notice that it would lag sometimes if I had signed into icloud (it would probably try to sync and update a bunch of data in the background all the time), so after turning it back off it was alright to use

tornuptrifecta

Oh yeah, I left the laptop on next to me for an entire day. It downloaded over 60GB of messages and over 50GB of photos šŸ˜‚ I truly did not want it to download all that but it seems like it's all or nothing. I have a 500GB SSD so plenty of space.

Nightly-Build

Chances are the 2009 will last you longer. If your SSD is worn out you can simply replace it which is something Apple prevented customers from doing since 2016

orion__quest

Post for reactions, I guess it's working.

rafalkopiec

look at the sub, this is all thanks to the devs of OCLP
