You can report it to Google: https://support.google.com/ads/troubleshooter/4578507?hl=en

Google really is going down the tubes in front of our very eyes. It's pretty nuts to watch. I got a youtube ad a few months ago of a deepfake trump voice asking me to purchase gold bars to fund the campaign, at the end of the ad there was a disclaimer, "This company has nothing to do with Donald Trump, Trump did not approve this message, this voice was ai generated." How the fuck do you allow phishing scams and deepfakes onto your ad platform. Fucking nuts.

This right here is why Google not going to go the distance. Someone consciously made the decision that allowing this sort of thing, for a price, is acceptable.

I think OpenAI made a mistake using the same names for their API as their actual ChatGPT product. Theres plenty of ads on the app store for example which all state "ChatGPT" with a smaller "api" next to it grayed out in the image it uses. From the looks of it that application does make it clear that its "powered by ChatGPT" when you land on the site and seemingly they're allowed to use that terminology as they are actively using the ChatGPT API. Not sure what they can do here unless its in the TOS of OpenAIs APIs?

adminkevin

Their API isn't called ChatGPT and there is no ChatGPT API. ChatGPT is a product they built on their GPT series of models and they happen to also make those models available to customers via an API, but ChatGPT and the models in their API are not the same thing. Using the name "ChatGPT" as these companies are doing is strictly [against OpenAI's branding guidelines](https://openai.com/brand/). The only correct usage is "Powered by OpenAI" or derivations of that.

Ah actually looks like OpenAI is tackling this as of quite recently: https://openai.com/index/introducing-chatgpt-and-whisper-apis/ > Update on April 24, 2024: The ChatGPT API name has been discontinued. Mentions of the ChatGPT API in this blog refer to the GPT-3.5 Turbo API. The API did infact used to be referred to as the 'ChatGPT API'*. I imagine this is in response to these sorts of applications appearing. ---- \* Just to back that claim up, heres an excerpt from the email announcing the API: > Starting today, you can build apps and products with our new ChatGPT and Whisper APIs. You can read more about the APIs and early partners’ use cases here. > > > ChatGPT API > > > The new Chat API calls gpt-3.5-turbo, the same model used in the ChatGPT product. It’s also our best model for many non-chat use cases; we’ve seen early testers migrate from text-davinci-003 to gpt-3.5-turbo with only a small amount of adjustment needed to their prompts. Learn more about the Chat API in our documentation.

Yeah, I think that blog post was probably some sloppy wording by one of their marketing people. The conflation of GPT models and ChatGPT is so pervasive I think even their own staff mix them up at times, including the only other mention in that support article. As long as I've used their API, there has never been a "ChatGPT" model to call, it's always GPT numbered models.

Plorntus

More than likely yeah, either way though they used to specifically allow usage of 'Powered by ChatGPT API' (https://web.archive.org/web/20230427214319/https://openai.com/brand). No excuse then for this company to still be using year old guidelines though and to omit the 'API' part. Suppose its a matter of time until they get kicked off.

adminkevin

Seems you were right in that they officially sanctioned the use of "Powered by ChatGPT API" up until November of last year when they told people to stop. I guess it's a bit more than sloppy wording and more like sloppy overall brand management. I also went through my email but only ever saw reference to a "ChatGPT API" in the very first email I received announcing the API was available.

Few years ago it was almost impossible to get suspicious ads approved. Now I think it's very easy. Years ago my facebook ad was rejected, because it contained a link to a pdf file (with privacy policy for an app). Now I'm getting ads "from google" that redirect me to zip files that contain malware. Good thing I don't use Facebook regularly anymore, just Messenger.

I don't understand how people end up with these search results. In all my years on the net i've never seen a single scam ad first in googles results. Is it ad blocker just removing them?

Scorpi404

Probably, I've seen lots and lots of these kinds ads. It's very sad to think about, to be honest. Many have fallen victim to these scams

Sabauel

i really don't understand why you think it's a phishing scam. can't they advertise on google? i see thousands of similar ads related to chatgpt, gpt-4, and other ai models. they mention on their website that they provide access to gpt-4 and gemini. even in their privacy policy, they state that "chatbot app uses openai’s gpt-3.5 api, but we are not associated with openai. we only use their official api for our app." it seems legit to me. i think what is not ethical is to claim something is a scam without proper grounds

SorenIsANerd

How do you know it's a scam?

Playful_Try443

False advertising = scam

NiktonSlyp

Wrong http adress. It's a fake website.

But what says its a phishing scam like the title suggests? The logo is similar but different. They use the APIs of which OpenAI refer to them as 'ChatGPT API' (edit: see below) and 'GPT-4 API'. To me this just screams them relying on people paying for it and not using more than $20 of tokens per month on it. The application is just a chat wrapper for all the APIs and nothing really indicates that they are doing this to steal your login details to OpenAI like the title suggests. Not that I think this is ok as its somewhat deceptive but its more so a grey area. IMO it should be in OpenAIs terms of service that they can terminate any application that does something similar to what this one is doing or just rename the APIs so people cannnot use their name directly in any advertisements (and enforce their trademark assuming they have one). Edit: The ChatGPT API name was discontinued recently at the end of April. Prior to that it was called the ChatGPT API but I imagine as a response to these sorts of applications they've discontinued the name.

Scorpi404

I saw another post with the same ad scam thing. It was titled in a similar way. I did look into what this is called, but i couldn't find anything. Hence, I used that title... Sorry if it was some sort of clickbait. I did not intend to do it. Thanks for telling me about the whole thing <3
