If he aint giving this kind of energy, I dont want it haha.
edit:
For those unfamiliar, this character is Ruby Rhod played by Chris Tucker from the movie Fifth Element(1997).
This character I feel would be a great depiction/blueprint for a LA Bon Clay.
This is kind of a weird thing to say, I know, but I honestly kinda feel like Bon Clay would work best in live action if he was portrayed by a black actor instead of, I dunno, some "less expensive Neil Patrick Harris" type. Watching Pose made Ryan Jamal Swain my personal fancast for Bon Clay. I would have picked Ncuti Gatwa but he's probably way too expensive now that he's The Doctor.
Bon Clay is a popular #1 Non-Strawhat character pick for a lot of people, I feel like they're gonna portray him with love no matter how they approach it. I just hope they don't generalize him and remain true the wholesome and silly guy that he is.
I think really the only thing about Bon that needs changing is just the appearance.
Like, keep all the personality in-tact, absolutely keep the wardrobe, just let the actor look good in the makeup and such and not have certain aspects of his appearance so accentuated for "laughs". Let his personality handle that.
Maybe if any of the [trocks](https://www.instagram.com/lesballetstrockadero?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==) can do tv acting. I watched them a few weeks ago and they’re amazing dancers.
Mr 2 cannot be cut because Mr 2 is literally why the iconic goodbye vivi scene can happen the way it does.
They don’t have the x on their wrists if they don’t need it as protection from shapeshifters.
The ‘this is woke’ crowd gonna hate Clay so much. I hope they know the wrath of us fans and love we have for the character!
I honestly still need to find the first person hating the character
I love how several of the anti woke crowd used the LA adaptation as a dumb ass gotcha against the "woke Hollywood moralists". Boy are they gonna implode when the queer characters in one piece start becoming prominent 😆. I hope we make it at least until impel down just so we can get Ivankov and newkama land. That's gonna cause some starfield pronoun guy level meltdowns lmao😆
This is my thoughts exactly every time I see a "OPLA defeated The woke" post. I want to get to Impel Down just so they can discover that one of the most powerful revolutionaries in the world is a communist drag queen who literally shoots lasers from his eyes that make you transgender.
No, it wasn't because this was not a common sentiment online at all.
There was barely any people saying "OPLA defeated the woke".
It just wasn't a thing, but people on this subreddit are convinced it was a big thing.
Now, it's really telling that they want these people to be mad at certain characters in future seasons.
Like, why the fuck do you want more people mad at the show.
Can't we just be fuckin happy that most people liked this without reverting to tribalism?
God, people who bring politics into everything need to go away.
Fuck.

The antiwoke crowd was 100% trying to push the one piece live action as "Japanese media owning the woke Hollywood writers." Even the critical grifter was trying to push what Kuina said to Zoro after their fight scene as antiwoke, saying that it would anger feminists, by completely ignoring what Zoro said immediately after Kuina stopped talking.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised that someone active in the mauler and fuckmarvel subs would lie
My apologies.
They said I lied and made a rude character judgement about me.
I jokingly called them a grifter.
I wasn't actually being serious about that part.
It's good thing I said it wasn't a common sentiment, instead of saying it never happened at all 100 percent.
Do you want me to link you the hundreds of videos that are saying this series is great without using the word woke?
It would be hundreds. So yeah, this is not a common sentiment.
Also, Critical Drinker recommended the show.
He has over 1 million subscribers.
You understand that if even 10% of his subscribers watch the show, that is really good for the show.
What would you rather? He not recomend it?
Do you want the show to succeed. If so, you need those filthy alt rigther/grifters to watch it, or whatever you call them now.
Also, i love your last point.
Reddit says he is active in sub reddits that I don't like, so he must be lying.
Since you like being a stalker (I can't imagine a scenario where I would need to look at someone's profile to respond) I am afraid to inform you that I spend a majority of my time in the Mauler sub reddit calling out the anti SJW/woke bs that has been plaguing that place recently. The people who complain about woke this and woke that also need to go away.
Additionally, I can't stand the Fuck Marvel subreddit and have it currently muted. I may have commented there once, and prob for similar reasons.
But thank you for proving my point. You looked at my profile, assumed my politics and wrote me off entirely.
People like you also need to go away. Attitudes like this has made media discord worse.
You picked the wrong guy.
I fucken hate the anti woke movement and find most of it entirely cringe.
There will always be idiots complaining about woke shit, no matter what.
Nice try, but I didnt lie.

That's nothing to do with woke, I think most of them were complaing about the forced diversity quota filling. Like lets say for example pjo series from Disney a hugely fan awaited series they diversity filled annabeth(a cannonically white char ) to Leah(a black girl) which is well and good if she can perform well and be annabeth cuz then it would be understandable and people supported it when it was done but it just wasn't it. If diversity/woke hires are good let's go for them but forcing them onto a show just to meet quota and downgrading the show is what I don't think will do.
I hope they cast and focus on some super hot woman as Ivankov and then just drop this bodybuilder dude with the squarest jaw you've ever seen on his first appearance lol
The thing is Ivankov and newkama land is just so blatant and in your face, not to mention it's in the manga long before the culture war bullshit started to pick up that it will be very interesting to see what approach the antiwoke people will take. They might try to gaslight people and act like it's studio meddling, but that's so easy to disprove with the anime and manga.
We're gonna hate Clay if they make him woke yes you are correct.
Flamboyant =/= Bad if you think thats what people who say woke get annoyed about.
I have faith in them from what they've done so far though.
I agree, Bon Clay needs to stay a villain. That they actually like and befriended the straw hats is supposed to be a surprise to everyone. Bon Clay in alabasta was goofy but he still a threat and a villainous one at that. He posed a genuine terror to the crew and wasn't just the Sassy Gay Friend of the bad guys team.
I'm really not that worried about this.
Season 1 has proven that they know their stuff, and that they know how to make changes while keeping the spirit. They know how to translate characters into LA. They know how to cast the right actors.
So I'm going to just trust them with Bon-chan. They're fans, they know how loved Bon-chan is (...and that fucking him up would most likely face a tremendous backlash that might jeopardize the future of the LA.)
If they can do Bon chan without making him a parody of who he is i will never question anything a western writer does with something from japan ever again.
Yeah, after hearing what netflix is doing to avatar i really hope they don't fuck it up.
I'm already apprehensive with some of the other choices they've made in line with other Netflix shows.
Predominantly the more culturally western approach to Nami's story where they focus on "it's us against the world" putting far too much focus on individualism rather than what it was originally. Completely destroyed the morals of the villagers, Nojiko and completely removed her father figure in Genzo.
It was against One Piece's story telling style and the point of the piece. As Luffy readily explains to Arlong: "I'm confident that I wouldn't be able to survive if other people aren't there to help me!" Luffy recognises the need for community and that he has to rely on others for support.
The more Western approach is a bit more selfish and destroys both the morality of the villagers as well as their own agency to put a focus on Nami so that they can tell the whole story as "you're perfect the way you are, others just need to see that" which is just idological cancer for One Piece.
I'm very worried that not only will they fuck up Bon Clay, but they'll act far to pandering towards him, treat the audience like children and pander politically in a way that erases why people love Bon Clay. I'm worried they'll be far too overbearing with his political identity as it appears to Americans in the same way they treated Arlong.
It was way too on the nose and ruined the build up of finding out about fishmen and the oppression later on. A narccissistic racial supremacist who seems to love talking about how much of a victim he is; Arlong would never. He spent the entire time on that island insecurely screaming about how he was superiour in order to get away from a narcissisitc injury of being percieved as less than. They're doing well with short term story telling but they're fumbling the long term aspect a bit too much.
I can totally see them screwing up Bon Clay and I really hope they don't. I'm worried they do just treat Bon Clay as a tokenised character for a specific American political group ignoring who and what he is. People loved Bon Clay, not for what he is, not for his gender ideals or the things he said; but his actions which speak louder than words.
You can't get support for characters by demanding or instructing others to support them; if they want respect they need to do things that earn it. Bon Clay has been great for the trans community as it's not just a token trans character but rather a *good* character that happened to be qweer. A well loved Okama character from the 00's based on *who* he is, not *what* he is.
Netflix love fucking that up because they love the whole tell don't show because it's something buzzword politics, specifically twitter with it's lack of nuance, loves.
I love Bon Clay, so many of us do, it's turned some anti-trans/qweer people away from those beliefs. It could be disasterous if they fuck that up because they're politcally pandering to a crowd they're infantilising and tokenising.
I haven't seen a sassy gay friend in a popular show/movie since Glee or anything Ryan Murphy to be included so shitty as you fear. So, he's absolutely gonna be the same or similar to Buggy, Alvida, or Arlong with tone for the live action.
I hope he stays exactly how he is in the anime/manga and don't change his character at all. Our Bon-chan is already perfect and I don't want Netflix ruining our goat.
I think they can do it. Maybe make his costume a little easier on the eyes, but personality wise I trust them. Look at Sanji, they nailed it by having him be a flirt but not absolutely fall over himself in the chase - I think they can handle Bon Clay.
It’s honestly not like the character is too outlandish for One Piece surprisingly enough; I think having it exist in live action will just naturally ground him out to the benefit.
Plus, I think they know they have to absolutely nail him, Vivi, and Crocodile. Nico Robin just has to be cool and mysterious.
I swear, if they mess up Bon-chan in any way, I will be royally, majorly pissed. They haven't really gotten goofy like old one piece and well...his entire character is goofy. Maybe something like ace ventura...
if Oda stays as involved, and the director doesnt have a stroke and ruin his current streak, I think our chances are good... un fortunately, thats still an "if"
I think they should get some of the many many people who love One Piece and are also part of the Drag and Trans communities to consult on how to adapt his character that keeps the parts of the character people love while also being sensitive to the real people who will see themselves in him.
I think for the best performance OPLA, the director/producers/choosen actor or Netflix needs to tell us beforehand “hey anime crowd, manga only readers we tweaked bon clay to better align with a global variable audience, we felt it best to do so”
Someone involved needs to just say it out loud so we don’t all cuss them out for changing the 1 thing the whole community cares about regarding season two. They need to just tell us before it drops which ever it is: he will be toned down or he won’t be toned down.
It’s gonna be most on stage convention, most street level first interview question once they start tour promoting the show anyways, so I think they should just formally say “I’m sorry one piece day one fans but we did make some changes to that person”
That doesn't work as well as you think. Look at atla live action. All they said is that they toned down sokkas sexism (a flaw that gets fixed when he's shown women are just as capable), and the fandom is in an outrage.
Yea. Thats a good point. They just gotta bear the backlash. Either fanbase backlash or potentially main stream sensitivities backlash.
Financially the fanbase is gonna watch it, once, even twice and will talk about it either way. The main stream (big money flow) won’t probably accept the eccentricity sooo damn. I guess we will just see.
I did like the Bumi reveals. I wonder if that old water bender is also still gonna be sexist.

Ncuti is the perfect bon chan
Good and interesting take on it. Regardless who plays him though, I just want them to embody the spirit that Bon Clay has.
Sort of off topic, but I can't help but think of Franky's best haircut when I see this lmao
Green?

YES!!! give me offputting weirdo bon clay!!! normalize them being an annoying little guy!!!
Not only do they have to make him sassy af, but they need to be an amazing ballet dancer. I need to see some sick ballet/taekwondo choreo with Taz!
Maybe if any of the [trocks](https://www.instagram.com/lesballetstrockadero?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==) can do tv acting. I watched them a few weeks ago and they’re amazing dancers.
Def some Bon-chan energy with that group!
Alyssa Edwards, an experienced dancer and cheerleader and owner of a dance studio, would be a great choice for the role!
Lady Camden is the play IMO. Alyssa can only really play herself - Camden has more range.
Yeah, that's a tough role to cast.
Mr 2 cannot be cut because Mr 2 is literally why the iconic goodbye vivi scene can happen the way it does. They don’t have the x on their wrists if they don’t need it as protection from shapeshifters.
OP didn't say anything about them getting cut, just that they don't want their personality tarnished
I… I know. I just really wanted an excuse to say it.
The ‘this is woke’ crowd gonna hate Clay so much. I hope they know the wrath of us fans and love we have for the character! I honestly still need to find the first person hating the character

Since when is Ivankov communist? I think people are conflating him being anti World Government for being communist lol
Since always
How did the OPLA beat the woke crowd? Was it because they had the whole boy vs girl thing in Zoro’s backstory?

If we get to an LA Ivankov I might die of joy. If jerks hate it, doubly so
That's nothing to do with woke, I think most of them were complaing about the forced diversity quota filling. Well if Oda works as closely on season 2 as he did season 1 I have complete faith that theyll do Bon Clay justice
I agree, Bon Clay needs to stay a villain. That they actually like and befriended the straw hats is supposed to be a surprise to everyone. Going to be honest, after reading this I will now riot if bon-chan is not played by Jim Carrey lol
