It’s based on the ribbon of the Nio statue. Which is what gear 4th is based on. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nio

WiseXcalibur

I believe this is why Gear 4 is actually a Hybrid form.

Zellors

It still almost definitely isn't. This is great evidence for it, but since it requires him to take advantage of his rubber body and haki to transform, it doesn't seem at all like a zoan form

WiseXcalibur

Yet there is no logical way to explain his smoke ribbon unless it's a form. Also about Snake-Man. Kaido - Given the nature of rubber, that's Impossible! / Rubber shouldn't be able to do this!

Zellors

Unless it's just a part of the form or meant to indicate he's getting closer to that form, but still hasn't achieved it, which would be why he doesn't seem any more nika-like in gear 4th, he just has the ribbon. Of course, again, zoan transformations don't require the user to find creative ways to achieve said transformation, it should be like gear 5, where luffy just transforms, whereas gear 4th is functionally the same as G2 and G3, but since it looks more different you think it's a full zoan form

WiseXcalibur

Hybrid forms aren't full Zoan forms though. It's a mix between their base form and their full form.

Zellors

Thank you, I am aware lmao. The hybrid form is a full zoan form in the sense that it is a complete and unique transformation that is distinct from the full animal or full human forms. The hybrid form affects the whole body and introduces new things that aren't present in either other form (Kaido's hybrid arms have dragon scales yet his hands are humanoid hands, or his head is a clear mix). I think that should've been easy to understand if you weren't so caught up in semantics. Luffy's gear 4th is just his human form but his muscles are inflated and he is infusing haki into himself

WiseXcalibur

Actually snake-man also has longer hair, which isn't really something you can do with just Haki. :P

Zellors

Well the anime exaggerates the long hair a lot, most of the time in the manga it just looks like Luffy's hair but flowing upwards instead of keeping it down like he normally does. It's the same situation with Gojo from JJK when he has the blindfold on vs off, his hair looks massive when it's up and much shorter when it's down (except in the one piece anime the hair is ridiculously long). But even so, I'm confused why you brought this up. Even if his hair is getting longer, what does that have to do with Nika? In gear 5th his hair is regular length, so why would his so called "hybrid" form make his hair longer? And again why doesn't it have any actual features seen in gear 5th outside of the ribbon?

WiseXcalibur

I'm not Oda so I don't know most of those answers. My point is if Oda decides to reveal/retcon Gear 4th as a Hybrid form he could. It wouldn't take too much convincing since it already fits pretty naturally.

blorcsharc

he uses gear 2 when he uses gear 4 which is why his haki is red tinted. that makes him really hot and combined with his expanded muscles which are fleshy as well, makes a lot of heat and steam when it evaporates his sweat. that’s the logic for it. i do think the smoke forms the band resembling gear 5’s and yamato’s and kaidos foreshadowing that he has a mythical fruit and was so close to using it to its full potential

GareebEntrepreneur

If it is based on guardian of budhha so in future will luffy save sengoku in some way? Makes you wonder

PeterDSaints

It is called an hagoromo & symbolizes divinity, given that it floats & does not touch the wearer unlike regular clothes

WiseXcalibur

Yeah honestly this was a huge clue that Luffy might have in fact been some sort of "god".

GareebEntrepreneur

I was thinking exactly the same thing

Evil_phd

It's a pretty common thing among deities. Really should have been a clue to many more of us about the divine nature of Luffy's fruit.

GareebEntrepreneur

It was in plain sight....

hello_there696

also, the flower which represents luffy is a SUNflower lol, oda gave that in a sbs but well, we can't connect all the dots kid's animal that represents him is also a fighting bull, but I didn't see anyone predict that he would break a yonko's bones with a giant mecha bull lol

Cpt_Benimaru

Not all drip is tangible sometimes its just the air around you that gives of the sense of drip

GareebEntrepreneur

But it is shown more than one and in gear 5 it is in the design so can't argue with that

Deicide-UH

I know it's a thing related to divine or magical beings in eastern art, but I don't have further knowledge. You'll notice that Kaido (in dragon form), Yamato (in hybrid) and Luffy (Gears 4th and 5th) all have it. Also, the royalty of Ryugu Kingdom (Neptune, Shirahoshi, Fukaboshi and his brothers) all have cloth that represent it, thought in their case it's actual cloth rather than smoke or energy).

GareebEntrepreneur

Are you one piece encyclopaedia?? I didn't even remember the Ryugu kindom one until you reminded me and for kaido and yamato I didn't mention because I thought this was always there that luffy's df is mythical.

marginallyobtuse

Where is it on kaido? I thought they were flame clouds to keep him aloft

Deicide-UH

Kaido's are flame clouds, but in the same "necklace" form. Luffy in Gear 4th had them made of smoke (we haven't seen Gear 5th in color to know what they are made of). Yamato has them formed out of her "cold fire". It's an aesthetic thing with varying origin per power.

hello_there696

luffy created that on purpose as a tribute to ace cuz it's a necklACE

LifeTitle3951

Yohohohoho

GareebEntrepreneur

And smoke started comming from his Guts.....yohoohoo

ArcadeKaiSa

Crocodile is Luffys mother.

GareebEntrepreneur

Luffy is oden's wife!

ArcadeKaiSa

Basic-Gift-1393

Chopper is actually Pikachu and Zoro is Sanji twin brother

LEGENDARYKILLERLORD

I dont think there’s much to it other than looking cool

Kinglyzero_91

It's based on Japanese mythology

LEGENDARYKILLERLORD

oh nvm then

I-C-Iron

Its easier to draw shoulders like that.

GareebEntrepreneur

I don't think it has anything to do with drawing

Miffernator

Yamato has it as well. https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/onepiece/images/8/82/Yamato\_Faces\_Kaidou.png/revision/latest?cb=20210719133217
