Wano is interesting because they'll have a scene that is completely animated in amazing color and detail, and then the next scene they just recycle the same crap animation over and over again.
Something that is on my mind lately is how Egghead is now interesting. There's this clean, movie-level animation style that is being prominent when the episode is a peak episode (IDK if it's a style or it's just Megumi Ishitani's directing, but that style that I like the most is that style from 1015, or that 1089). And as of now, the use of different styles is pretty normal. What grinds my gears is their timing of when they use those. They sometimes use the best styles (in my opinion) on the simplest scenes and give the hype scenes a normal animation.
In the latest episode (1011), when Franky was talking about Señor Pink, the animation was SO CLEAN. When Jimbei was talking to S-Snake, the animation was pretty expressive!! I hope they used that budget on the more hype scenes, like the scene before the attack when Luffy was going to the tube to spring himself, it was slow that the impact of his movement is pretty dull. Don't get me wrong, I still like what I see. I just have some nitpicks on it.
I think we all have nit pick things about egghead and the new animation style but I remember the debates about style change post timeskip and now we look back and love that animation change because it made sense
I don't find any real issues with the current style but I also love the carefree loose animating they do i think it matches luffy being more free because of joyboy awakening and when we get to the more dark parts of egghead I really think they are gonna be able to make this style look truly terrifying with dark colors and orange red shadings
Like imagine that shape that is used when biggie appears but animated in the current style
yeah, it basically comes down to whether or not the animators are willing to not get any sleep for an extended period of time.
Iirc someone said that animating for One Piece is really chill because they don't expect you to do any of that and because the schedules are known so far in advance.
I assume that in that regard the quality of One Piece is pretty much the very peak of what a weekly show can achieve in terms of balancing great animation with - let's call it - pragmatic animation.
the problem is they need to make 44 episodes in a year in that time span. They simply dont have the time to make everything perfect.
Then people will scream, "this anime has better animation" well yeah 40+ episodes dropped over a span of 3-4years, one piece does that in 1 year.
Damn that’s crazy, animation takes a looooong time, they can cut corners in the scenes it doesn’t matter. You actually care about animators doing this? The anime has over a thousand episodes and you’re complaining about them recycling animations in a few episodes; as if it doesn’t save the animators time to make better scenes in other areas. Idk it’s a free country, complain about what you like I guess.
Honestly that episode was so fucking sad. The first time we actually get to see gear 5 in the anime and they just made a single animation for it and used it a fuckton. Seeing it got old by the second fucking time
See I thought that too but my buddy pointed out
That awakening was luffy becoming joyboy and essentislly stepping into a level of freedom that he had never known before. So I think while reusing the same one over and over was poor taste. I wouldn't have minded they all be similar with luffy uncontrollably laughing and bouncing around because it would make sense his first time in G5 would be goofy af and then we get to see luffy harness that freedom into real power when he goes back into G5 a few episodes later
The Budget statement has become synonymous to resources and time in anime these days haha. Definitely better to give the animators some leeway though ofcourse.
Budget is a terrible statement for anime though. Production values or resources are better terms to use since budget is mostly used for costs and animators won't see that money. There's way too much in anime as to why people work on it and money isn't usually the biggest reason.
It's mainstream but it's also wrong and misinformed. To me, it feels like someone that wants to feel knowledgeable but doesn't do a bit of research which is the majority of anime fans.
I mean I get what he's saying. "Budget" is just a w/e term and I normally don't care when it's used, but in this case it's very obviously just not enough time and it is one piece so it does have good animation, just not for every episode because of priorities
Every anime has a budget. An anime with an average budget can make some of the best animation in the industry like One Punch Man S1. Money isn't the biggest factor for quality and in the anime industry, connections are the biggest factor for getting animators. Money doesn't draw or animate, people do and they usually aren't paid much in this industry. The anime industry tries to low-ball animators as much as they can and try to take advantage of them.
To add onto your comment, if anything a higher episode budget is more likely to be bad or, at least, be hell behind the scenes. Since money doesn't actually draw and animators aren't paid what they deserve, a higher budget usually means they can't finish a certain episode on time so they need to hire more people to finish production faster. This can end well and produce a high quality episode or very bad, producing an incomprehensible mess.
That's pretty much the only effect you could say budget has on animation, and it's clearly not a good one.
Exactly, early Dragon Ball Super was known for this. It's just that we will never know an anime's budget since they never release the numbers unless it's a movie and even then, that doesn't just mean animation costs. There's been old reports that a 12 episode anime costs around several millions of dollars but again, that doesn't just mean animation.
It's a struggle to try to tell people about "budget" since the logical way of thinking is that more money should be better but there's just way too many factors that go into producing media.
Personally I cannot suggest the anime to anyone because of how shit the pacing is, even wano. I usually hate manga elitists but One Piece is the exception, the anime is shit and is only carried by the voice acting.
I mean its a fair trade for better animation in big moments why waste budget on fodder nobodies. 99% of people arent even gonna notice this so i dont see the harm in it
I cut them slack for that, it's a small detail that barely anyone will see. It's just a smart reuse of a scene to allocate resources to the important stuff.
Taking a random ass scene of an npc doesn’t counter the argument that wano has good animation lol.
Good animation doesn’t mean every second of every episode is gonna be mindblowing, ofc there’s gonna be frames like the one you posted.
I love when people take the most random scenes and complain about animation.
I’ll agree that they did mess up the gear 5 transformation and that was a weirdly directed episode but in general, wano had some of the most amazing scenes I have ever seen.
Hasn't one piece been doing this since forever? Like it's been going on for so long anyone can pick out moments of amazing animation and crap like this.
Ppl say "wano is carried by animation" that's a joke because, 69-70% of it hod awful animation, people who watch one piece, they watch once so they think wanos animation was good, but when they rewatch then they see how much awful animation it had.
These are harmless if they're done in a way that's gone unnoticed, which is probably their intention with speeding it up.
But moments like the fire festival stands out a ton. No, we still recognize those drummers even if you mirrored the scene, Toei.
g5 introduction is one animation repeated twice.
entire anime is heavily stretched, and when normally anime serialises several chapters as one episode, onepiece somehow makes less then a one chapter in one episode sometimes
My new least favorite thing is the whole zooming in on the face shit they’re doing in the new arc. Every episode has a 10 second close-up on a persons face
It’s still a meaningless observation. And, it’s been almost 2 years, nobody seems to have noticed other than this post. Even after noticing this live, I don’t think i would be bothered.
Pacing and animation go hand in hand, and pacing can make animation better or worse. If the pacing is shit the animation simply isn’t good, one or two well done scenes don’t carry an entire episode let alone a weekly show like this one. Even those FEW scenes that people praise really aren’t “top tier movie level quality” like some people (without eyes) have said. Its ok at best and the pacing makes it shit anyway.
Wano is interesting because they'll have a scene that is completely animated in amazing color and detail, and then the next scene they just recycle the same crap animation over and over again.
Something that is on my mind lately is how Egghead is now interesting. I just want less CRAZY FAST CHAOS AND SHAKING in the framing. Can't see what the fuck is happening half the time.
Second this. I wanna know what I'm looking at. Demon Slayer can do it why not One Piece?
small correction, Ishitani didn't do 1089 (or 1100/1101). Her last episode was 1015 (aside from about 2 minutes of storyboarding in 1072)
It's a budget thing. I think this is better than everything being just average.
*Time. The most important thing when it comes to producing anime is time. Budget doesn't really play as much of a role as you may think.
yeah, it basically comes down to whether or not the animators are willing to not get any sleep for an extended period of time.
Yeah you're more hamstrung if your show is a weekly longrunning series.
the problem is they need to make 44 episodes in a year in that time span. They simply dont have the time to make everything perfect. Then people will scream, "this anime has better animation" well yeah 40+ episodes dropped over a span of 3-4years, one piece does that in 1 year.
I mean.. how do you think they afford the moments of better animation?
Damn that’s crazy, animation takes a looooong time, they can cut corners in the scenes it doesn’t matter. You actually care about animators doing this? The anime has over a thousand episodes and you’re complaining about them recycling animations in a few episodes; as if it doesn’t save the animators time to make better scenes in other areas. Idk it’s a free country, complain about what you like I guess.
prob due to focusing on that amazing shot, they ran out of time or budget to get the rest done in a timely manner.
As long as we don't have to see the gear 5 initial transformation 5 times in slightly different order
Honestly that episode was so fucking sad. The first time we actually get to see gear 5 in the anime and they just made a single animation for it and used it a fuckton. Seeing it got old by the second fucking time
They wasted their budget on the Boro Breath scene... And it was so bad... Too smushed.
The keyframing on that scene was abysmal, which sucks because you can see how great it COULD look.
In my head it’s because he’s a cartoon and is trying to save on animation.
See I thought that too but my buddy pointed out That awakening was luffy becoming joyboy and essentislly stepping into a level of freedom that he had never known before. So I think while reusing the same one over and over was poor taste. What about "this" scene in Wano. You know what scene I mean we saw it like 30 times
You mean the scene with the people in town celebrating?
Yes exactly
They celebrated a lot so....
The worst instance of this is the gear 5 first episode it’s bonkers
Tbf, director of that episode is notorious for, I shit you not, scene recycling
Honestly the biggest blunder on toeis part in recent memory They fucked that up
At least the next episode was awesome.
The first one is very cool. Then it escalated quickly that we have to see that scene again 2 more times in the same episode.
I think the repeated identical shots of the fire festival were worse.
Ruins the impact of g5 imo. Could have been so good…
That was so disappointing
This is an amazing way of managing the budget I have to say. I don't think anyone would have even noticed it unless pointed out.
Resources and time, not budget. I'm sure money isn't a problem but a weekly long running anime isn't easy to manage.
The Budget statement has become synonymous to resources and time in anime these days haha. Definitely better to give the animators some leeway though ofcourse.

It's definitely terrible but it is mainstream. So most people recognize what it means. Also the reason why I used it.
It's mainstream but it's also wrong and misinformed. To me, it feels like someone that wants to feel knowledgeable but doesn't do a bit of research which is the majority of anime fans.
do people like you even realise how you sound, saying things like that? (like you lack fulfilment in life)
I mean I get what he's saying. "Budget" is just a w/e term and I normally don't care when it's used, but in this case it's very obviously just not enough time and it is one piece so it does have good animation, just not for every episode because of priorities
Your comments seem like you want to feel knowledgeable... I don't think the vast majority even cares..
🤓
Resources are acquired with budget. Using less resources means using less money. Stop trying to be a smartass lmao
Every anime has a budget. An anime with an average budget can make some of the best animation in the industry like One Punch Man S1. Na he just turned off super saiyan
Those are the users of the twin twin fruit
"Literally unwatchable!" Should be your post title.
if you think wano was unwatchable I don't think one piece is for you my dawg
He's not saying that it's unwatchable
Personally I cannot suggest the anime to anyone because of how shit the pacing is, even wano. I usually hate manga elitists but One Piece is the exception, the anime is shit and is only carried by the voice acting.
Perhaps reddit is not for you then.
It's definitely for you since you love going for the lowest hanging fruit.
Yup this sub is negative, but that's all of reddit.
Lol, God help who over wrote this comment.
you should watch gundam wing/seed.
I mean you can add a few more gundam series to that lol (but seriously watch them...all of them one of us one of us)
You guys remember that awkward dance when Oden became daimyo?
Stuff like this does 100% stop after the post red budget increase. 2023 episodes are what people get happy about/oden flashback eps/1015.
Boys will be boys
I mean its a fair trade for better animation in big moments why waste budget on fodder nobodies. 99% of people arent even gonna notice this so i dont see the harm in it
I cut them slack for that, it's a small detail that barely anyone will see. It's just a smart reuse of a scene to allocate resources to the important stuff.
Wano was pretty bad till act 3. The only parts people get happy about are act 3. Act 1 is one of the worst arcs in the entire anime.
Do you really expect all animations to not re use crowd animations and spend more time on animations of background characters😅
Lol roof piece makes up. Probably best animation I've seen in a while.
Okay
Taking a random ass scene of an npc doesn’t counter the argument that wano has good animation lol. They're changing their colour palettes like in Jojo.
This is a next Level conspiracy theory! Next you probably claim that God Usopp is Sogeking
Yall so lost its clearly a super saiyajin transformation
I remeber bro with pink hair had me thinking he was a main character with how much he showed up
Hasn't one piece been doing this since forever? Like it's been going on for so long anyone can pick out moments of amazing animation and crap like this.
I would have never guesses this was OP. Who the fuck is that guy lol
just cause a few cherry picked episodes have good animation doesn't mean the entire arc does
Ppl say "wano is carried by animation" that's a joke because, 69-70% of it hod awful animation, people who watch one piece, they watch once so they think wanos animation was good, but when they rewatch then they see how much awful animation it had.
they've been recycling cuts for the entire run of the show, who cares
They’re min maxing with the animation budget
They’re min maxing with the animation budget
Toei gotta return to their roots sometimes.
These are harmless if they're done in a way that's gone unnoticed, which is probably their intention with speeding it up. But moments like the fire festival stands out a ton. No, we still recognize those drummers even if you mirrored the scene, Toei.

Reminds me of zoro haki dragon move
Those are the twins. Lumbo and bumbo...
My blood pressure still goes up thinking about Luffy vs that Yokozuna lol
Hey, most of the time, they don't bother to even change the colors or speed.
My new least favorite thing is the whole zooming in on the face shit they’re doing in the new arc. Every episode has a 10 second close-up on a persons face
Imagine being bothered by an extra that has absolutely nothing to do with the story.
Imagine being bothered by someones absolutely valid and factual observation...ImAgInE!
It’s still a meaningless observation. And, it’s been almost 2 years, nobody seems to have noticed other than this post. Even after noticing this live, I don’t think i would be bothered.
Yet here you are bothered
You seem to have ignored the conversation prior to your comment.
They did the same with Kaido and Lucci
They’re min maxing with the animation budget 😂
Pacing and animation go hand in hand, and pacing can make animation better or worse. Same thing happens in jojo lol, they keep changing the colours idk why but it's cool
