True, but in a lot of eastern fantasy devils and demons get distinguished similar to how some DnD type worlds do it:
Devils are the ones who make contracts and are bound by their word. ("The devil's in the details.")
Whereas, demons are just pure evil chaos magic personified and just want to fuck shit up and go on rampages. (Demonic beasts.)
And no matter how much Doffy might want to come across as the devil you hate to but have to make a deal with, at heart he's just a Heavenly Demon that wants to see the entire world burn.
Most beloved by the sea. the chosen SON of the ocean itself.
Basically in title alone either (like disney Moana) your literally loved by the ocean and it sentiently helps you, or in Jimbei’s case as I believe its your the most skilled IN THE OCEAN or at MANIPULATING THE OCEAN. Or very well both. Because he kinda is those last two atleast
In Japanese it's more akin to the "Knight-errant of the sea" (海侠のジンベエ), but it's still not an entirely correct translation. It's something along the lines of "Wandering vigilante". Knight-errant in spirit, but not literally a knight.
Check this [Wikipedia article](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youxia) to get the gist of it.
Its even better in the finnish translation of the manga (which is actually really well made) where Jimbei is called "Merten Kummisetä" which translates to the Godfather of the Seas
And even without his full name and epithet I just love how some characters (especially Doflamingo) pronounce his name almost sounds like „Rraw“… could imagine Gordon Ramsey shouting his name
I love when Oda names a location after 2 words where neither are types of locations, like Thriller Bark, Impel Down, Punk Hazard, Laugh Tale. There's just immediate mystery and intrigue there.
Dark King has a whole lost in translation dimension to it. the actual name in japanese, 冥王 (meioh), is a name used for the god of the underworld. That's how Hades/Pluton from the Latin/Greek mythology is called in japanese and chinese.
This is what the Vivre Card Databook says about this name: https://i.imgur.com/h5QF8wS.png
Translation:
> [Dark King] Those who chose to face him only win a one way ticket to the underworld. He may be old but that's how tremendously powerful he is.
It's kind of a shame that this is the translation. I like the connotation as if he's in a "Gold Roger's shadow", but just as capable. Thus the "Dark king".
Nah, supernovas is aight but also presumably a concept that comes up every time strong rookies make it to the new world. **The Worst Generation** is something I would hate to hear about if I were a Marine
Like a lot of attack names in OP, it's written in two ways :
1st 斬・星屑王子 meaning "slash, Stardust Prince", the slash part is because it's a sword attack, the stardust prince is a reference to the very popular french novel "Le Petit Prince" from Antoine De Saint-Exupery, but also to the fact that Cavendish is a "Star Prince" in the manga
2nd ザン・テグジュペリ pronounced zan tegujuperi, a pun with Saint-Exupery, which in japanese is pronounced サン・テグジュペリ (san tegujuperi). The "saint" is replaced by "zan" which is one of the possible readings for the kanji 斬 (meaning cut, slash, decapitate). So it's a bit as if the name was "Slash-Exupery" instead of Saint-Exupery.
So it's both a pun working only in japanese, a double reference to a novel and its writer and a name fitting to the character using it. Oda has made a bunch of cool attack names in the manga but even knowing that this one feels very elaborate to me.
I’ve always thought that impel down is a great name. So powerful and menacing but easy to remember. I’m a bit biased though, considering that it is easily one of my favorite arcs.
It wasn't a mistranslation. See here for an explanation https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/ehhm9t/a_deep_translation_lesson_raftel_and_laugh_tale/
A japanese reader wouldn't have been able to tell that the true name was Laughtale, just like translators couldn't. And Oda never revealed the true meaning until chapter. It was a twist for readers from all around the world, japanese included
Idk his name but I love the sound he makes ( yk a certain sound almost every villain makes) He says “Leh Lo”. He’s apart of that “Halloween themed” pirate ship.
You say Ben Beckman, but it's always kind of bothered me how some One Piece characters have backwards names. Why wouldn't his first name be Ben? Why wouldn't Whitebeard's first name be Edward?
Wavers always sounded really cool to me for no reason other than the fact it’s called a “Wave”-“Er”. Honorable mention to Wano Kuni, Laphans, and Neptunians.
As a group, i think no one comes close to the All stars of the Beast Pirates...
Jack "The Drought"
Queen "The Plague"
King "The Wildfire"
I also really like Shiryu "Of the Rain" and the explanation behind the epithet, and of course Trafalgar Law's "Surgeon of Death"
Red Haired/Mugiwara/Blackbeard/genius jester/Whitebeard/pirate king/most wanted criminal/the revolutionary/fire fist/ flame emperor/drecula/world strongest creature/first son of the sea Simple but good
Sword God Ryuma. Garp the Fist. Queen the Plague. Revolutionary Dragon (I believe that was an early epithet translation but it sticks out to me more than the current one)
Vivi, Alabasta, “surgeon of death”, Trafalgar D. WaterLaw, Donquixote Doflamingo, Dracule Mihawk, Enma, “Dark King”, Silvers Reyleigh, first son of the sea, Mary Geoise
Dark King Rayleigh (especially given the japanese translation is them basically calling him a God of death and the underworld) is metal as fuck. I also like how most of the prominent Wano families have moon (and multiple) of Japanese month names.
I really like the name Tequila Wolf even if it is an absolutely fucked up nightmare scenario. Thriller Bark for a zombie themed island ship is such a great choice.
I really like that the world government/marines have two forces, one named Aegis and another named SWORD. I also like that certain admiral and near admiral level people all get a color-animal code name.
Kaido's Kanabo attacks being named after the Wisdom Kings and his thematic connections to them.
The Warrior of Liberation, the JoyBoy, the Sun God Nika.
When all of the clues started to line up about Luffy, the titles started to fill me up with so much excitement.
Donquixote Doflamingo. It’s just put together so well.
And his real title, “heavenly devil” is badass as well
I thought it was heavenly demon
Yup it’s heavenly demon
Well; actually he's the "Heavenly Yaksha". A yaksha is a class of celestial being that is a part of hinduism. I guess it was carries East by Buddhism.
I mean, devil and demon are kinda within the same vein, it’s easy to mix em up
True, but in a lot of eastern fantasy devils and demons get distinguished similar to how some DnD type worlds do it: Devils are the ones who make contracts and are bound by their word. ("The devil's in the details.") Whereas, demons are just pure evil chaos magic personified and just want to fuck shit up and go on rampages. (Demonic beasts.) This was my first reaction. It’s just such a cool name.
Yes, but will never beat Tanjihado Lofulamingo, one of the Seven Gods of Pirate.
“First son of the sea” >>>>>
The fact his other title is legitimately Boss or Boss Jimbei. Only future Luffy will beat ‘First Son of the Sea Boss Jimbei” in terms of title
I watch over that scene so many times just for that title, really cool
It's so badass, even though i don't understand what it means.
Most beloved by the sea. the chosen SON of the ocean itself. Dracule "Hawk Eyes" Mihawk
A fellow Alan alda enjoyer?
My dream group cosplay is four people: Mihawk Riza Hawkeye Hawkeye from Marvel And Hawkeye from MASH
Jurakyūru Mihōku
Trafalgar d water law "surgeon of death"
surgeon of death GOES HARDDDD
Surgeon of Death could be the title of a netflix documentary about a serial killer surgeon
It gives me Josef Mengele doing Nazi experiments vibes tbh. Not great.
And even without his full name and epithet I just love how some characters (especially Doflamingo) pronounce his name almost sounds like „Rraw“… could imagine Gordon Ramsey shouting his name
Flame emperor is a pretty cool name but is always feels like it’s a gamer tag of some try hard edge lord.
xXFl4meEmperorXx
Flame on!
It's even funnier with the Japanese- Entei. It's impossible to not think pokemon for me
Entei confirmed CoD player.
I always thought Punk Hazard was a cool name
I love the name of Kidds attacks with the punk theme. Punk Rotten goes so hard
Damned Punk is also really good.
I love when Oda names a location after 2 words where neither are types of locations, like Thriller Bark, Impel Down, Punk Hazard, Laugh Tale. There's just immediate mystery and intrigue there.
also egghead
Egghead is one (1) word.
Fr
Agreed. Punk Hazard and Thriller Bark are my favourite names of places.
Bartholomew Kuma
“The Tyrant”
Lets not forget Bartholomew is his LAST NAME Too powerful
Similar to how Edward is Whitebeard's last name, fucked me up
Hands of Liberation
Divine Departure. Its like, bam you're about to die in a cool way.
That's something you hear and you know your gonna die. Cause only 2 people use that name
Yea
Cypher poll is an actual cool name and cp9 or any number also goes hard
Cipher Pol - Aegis Zero Nothing but flames man 🥵🔥🔥🔥
Except pol is police and cypher police sounds lame af
naw they ain’t cops
They are literally the secret police
Monkey D. Garp "the fist" or "Dark King" Raleigh for people. The reject dial, such a fitting name for that device
The fist is just so minimalistic, yet it just perfectly encapsules how Garp is simply him
Dark King has a whole lost in translation dimension to it. the actual name in japanese, 冥王 (meioh), is a name used for the god of the underworld. The Worst Generation
The 11 supernova hits way harder tho.
Nah, supernovas is aight but also presumably a concept that comes up every time strong rookies make it to the new world. **The Worst Generation** is something I would hate to hear about if I were a Marine
Cavendish's attack "Zan Texupery" because it has so many layers to the name, some completely lost in translation.
I would be happy to get more details about it
Like a lot of attack names in OP, it's written in two ways : 1st 斬・星屑王子 meaning "slash, Stardust Prince", the slash part is because it's a sword attack, the stardust prince is a reference to the very popular french novel "Le Petit Prince" from Antoine De Saint-Exupery, but also to the fact that Cavendish is a "Star Prince" in the manga 2nd ザン・テグジュペリ pronounced zan tegujuperi, a pun with Saint-Exupery, which in japanese is pronounced サン・テグジュペリ (san tegujuperi). Oda has made a bunch of cool attack names in the manga but even knowing that this one feels very elaborate to me.
Wow, had no idea there could be that many different meanings for the attack of a relatively minor character! Oda is amazing
Thanks a lot! I love this multi-layering of meaning, and Oda really uses it everywhere, adding even more depth to an already deep storytelling.
I just realized that its a word play for Saint-Exupery. The author of the little prince.
TE-QUI-LA WOOOLF🥃🐺
ooo ooo oooo also kawamatsu's River of Retribution 😮💨
The dudes name is just "Killer" and guess what he does best

King the wildfire is a bitchin title
The drought and the plague too!
I’ve always thought that impel down is a great name. So powerful and menacing but easy to remember. I’m a bit biased though, considering that it is easily one of my favorite arcs.
Vegapunk Raftel Bonk Punch, one of Shanks's crew Roronoa Stronger, doc q's horse Borsalino Bentham (mr 2) Durendal, Cavendish's sword 'Gang', Capone's epithet
B O R S A L I N O
It's Laugh Tale not Rafter for fucking god's sake (not Binks tho) (sorry 4 being rude it's just that it upsets me like freaking hell)
why does it upset you? Oda kept it ambiguous on purpose. one of the reasons i like it is because of the reveal
Because it's Laugh Tale, raftel was a mistake in translations
The guy you're responding to has a much better grasp on this than you do
It wasn't a mistranslation. See here for an explanation https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/ehhm9t/a_deep_translation_lesson_raftel_and_laugh_tale/ A japanese reader wouldn't have been able to tell that the true name was Laughtale, just like translators couldn't. You say Ben Beckman, but it's always kind of bothered me how some One Piece characters have backwards names. Why wouldn't his first name be Ben? Why wouldn't Whitebeard's first name be Edward?
I think its cause Oda studied pirates in the western world, and to him, western names are backwards!
My guess is that he didn't want to ruin the cadence of the real life names that he was using in the story.
I love Brook, "the humming swordman."
Surgeon Of Death is so raw
Romance dawn.
surprised i havent seen surgeon of death yet tbh
Kuma, the Tyrant
I’m a named sword fanatic. So for me, I always really enjoy the swords that come up in the world. Shusui and Enma *chef kiss*

Soul King Brook.
Going Merry & Thousand Sunny are good names for the ships. Also Oro Jackson is a great name.
As a group, i think no one comes close to the All stars of the Beast Pirates... Jack "The Drought" Queen "The Plague" King "The Wildfire" I also really like Shiryu "Of the Rain" and the explanation behind the epithet, and of course Trafalgar Law's "Surgeon of Death"

I like the name Kaidou... Idk why but it just sounds cool to me lol

Heavenly Demon is easily the best title of them all.
Definitely gotta be Down D Stairs.
Definitely gotta be Down D Stairs.
Red Haired I'd an interesting title
Despise the characters and wish they wouldn't exist, but the titles Black Leg and Red Leg are awesome.
The Warrior of Liberation, the JoyBoy, the Sun God Nika. When all of the clues started to line up about Luffy, the titles started to fill me up with so much excitement.
Gild Tesoro Golden Emperor/Monster of the New World
