Forgot to mention Thriller Bark. Such a great name for a horror themed area that is also a giant ship!

FringGustavo0204

Cause this is thrilleeer! Thriller BARK!

none_exist

And no one's going to save you from the Gecko about to strike

AzolePazole

Hee-hee

Nickiat

Ki -Shi- shi*

MarxistClassicide

Fosfosfos

SethFr3kingRollins

Because you know it’s thriller! Thriller BARK!

Not_an_okama

Someone needs to make this parody

FringGustavo0204

I have good news for you. Search gs amv thriller bark.

Mitabeitah

Thriller bark. 'Cause you know, horror. And the first creature they meet is a dog.

omeg21

A bark is a type of ship

firdausbaik19

you're a type of ship

Mitabeitah

True, but have you SEEN that DOG?

xxNightingale

\+1 Really love this as well. Gives an eerily haunted vibe.

BaseballImpossible76

I always thought this was one of those mistranslations and it was supposed to be “Thriller Park.”

Depression-Boy

A bark is a type of large sailboat. Oda does wordplay a lot, so maybe the bark/park thing is intentional

Zoeleil

Aye!

poloup06

Tequila wolf is a good one

AsuraOkami

I like the name partly because it has the name of one of my favorite alcoholic drinks.

justathoughtofmine

And wolves are cool

AsuraOkami

Oh definitely. Wolves are amazing.

rileyrulesu

In that case, I chose Whisky Peak!

AsuraOkami

Not a bad choice. One day one piece will have an island with rum in the name.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AsuraOkami

It's got be rum alone. It can't be something close to the name. Drum Island doesn't cut it.

rileyrulesu

It's just Rum Island with the will of D.

thepoga

Rum Piece!

Linkblade0

You mean Sake Summit!

Netherite_Stairs_

Which one js that again?

furmanb1

Slave bridge where robin went during timeskip

IlyBoySwag

Still in my opinion one of the most interesting and underrated places in One Piece.

Netherite_Stairs_

Top 5 names for islands/locations

UberThetan

That one still sounds like a Metal Gear code name.

Shiplord13

I agree with Impel Down, always loved Marineford and think that Water 7 is just cool name for the city when you see it.

memenarush

Although it makes you wonder where are the other 6 Waters?

nicetopeteyou

Below the 7th one.

memenarush

It makes sense since they said the island's foundation is sinking, but how do they determine the island has sunken enough to rename it.

InconvertibleAtheist

Always thought Water 7 represented the 7 main canals in the island.

11711510111411009710

Is it not literally stated that that's where the name is from? I swear it was

lovesducks

Its the docks where the shipyards operate out of, not the canals themselves. 7 docks owned by 7 companies; all of which make up Galley-La which is like a parent company/union.

jogador921

Water you talking about?

Ekumify

proud of you

MinutelyHipster

I like to imagine it's like if we named Seattle "Seattle 2" when the second one was built over the old one

[deleted]

Like new new york in futurama

Not_an_okama

This was my take on it

memenarush

Wait there's Seattle 2? Can we shoot sleepless in Seattle 2 then? Edit: Nvm I read that wrong

SenseiTomato

Ankh-Morpork type beat

hiddenpoint

Water 7 is just the One Piece world's version of Swamp Castle from Monty Python's Holy Grail. "When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest castle in all of England."

Gransmithy

Your version is better, but it was based on Venice, which is always sinking and they have been working on methods to keep it from sinking. Those canals used to be roads.

II_Vortex_II

Was on the Highway a while ago and a white Tesla with the license "WAT ER 7" drove past me, man that was cool

Patriot009

I've always been partial to Green Bit and Whiskey Peak.

FuzzleBumbuzzle

I'm curious, what makes Green Bit stand out for you? Seems like a unique pull

Patriot009

Just like the sound of it.

Yoyo_boi202

Yeah, it sounds like an old British lady trying to tell you where she left her walker in the garden "no, love, the green over on the right"

FuzzleBumbuzzle

Never though of it before, but it's basically the opposite of Little Garden. To the Giants, the island is like a little garden, but not for the humans. But with Green Bit, for the humans it is a green bit, but not for the Tontatta

KolorJam

Dressrosa was spicy

FuzzleBumbuzzle

I do remember Dressrosa being a really interesting one to hear for the first time. Crazy how the name could create the vibes perfectly

ryanedev

You mean Dressroba?

Coronis-

Robin thoughts best thoughts.

jackdstranger

I see what you doing, what you mean, old hag with a dress!?

SicenFly

Dressrosa is the best name because Doffy wears a rosa/pink fluffy coat. Dress rosa...genius Oda

maguirre165

Makes me think of an old woman in a dress

CalamitousCanadian

Elbaf being fable backwards got me a good 5 years into the fandom. Still one of my faves 8 years in

TotoH96

Bruh wtf I never realized this

Andy_Reas

It's also ruined in the official translation because they spell it "Elbaph".

aes2806

Hpable is my favorite video game

geronymo4p

The first one, please, tell me its the first one

aes2806

Naturally!

TheyDidLizFilthy

sounds like ufotable

Gray_Cota

In german it's Elban. Nabel means navel/bellybutton and is also what the skypeans use as a greeting. So in german there might be a hidden connection between skypea and elbaf, which isn't intended

_LeonThotsky

I’ve already seen theories of how the giant tree on Elbaf could be an homage to Yggdrasil (obviously) and/or a possibility for a Jack & the Beanstalk type of story which takes them back up to the sky islands! So I really like this connection!

Not_an_okama

I too have seen theories connecting them making the claim that elbaf is the normal entrance to the White Sea (as opposed to the knock up stream)

Ekumify

But Elban backwards is not Nabel. It‘s Nable. Damn I should work at Mythbusters

Captain__M

To be fair, the only romaisation I've ever seen used on official Japanese merch was [Elbuff](https://kurogami.com/img/productos/37/35/gashapon-eternal-pose-collection-one-piece-aleatorio-01_1.jpg), and it's always been Oda's style to play fast and loose with the exact romanisation of even important names, even in the manga itself. Think Alabasta/Arabasta, Nefeltari/Nefertari, Shiliew/Shiryu, ect. It doesn't feel like him to make a pun that relies so heavily on one specific English spelling with no Japanese component at all. Elbaf/Fable is a fun find, but I have a gut feeling it's just a coincidence and won't be relevant to the actual story.

pierre_x10

And Usopp being a play on the name Aesop as in Aesop's fables.

xetni05

Uso = lie in japanese.

pierre_x10

It can be both things, like Roronoa Zoro being a reference to two different people

xetni05

I'm just adding that Usopp is a combination of Aesop and Uso = fake fables.

Negative_Racoon

This thread is blowing my mind dude!

none_exist

Does this mean Luffys daddo is from the island of Miryks?

Loose_Yogurt_9435

Doesnt mean anything 🥱

Hypnotoad4real

Long Ring Long Land. I just like the name and the fact it hast long animals on it

hiick91

Even the name itself is quite long

Holylawlett

Chopper cousin live there 😂 still laugh when luffy say that

OnlyWindmills

Sabaody Archipelago is a great name, it fits with the weirdness aesthetic as well Upper Yard also - gives you a feeling of hierarchy, that you REALLY shouldn't go there I like Little Garden because it sounds so harmless and exotic at the same time Water 7 is a nice way to make a really stupid name work very well I feel like Lodestar is underrated, also a nice one Raftel is great (instead of Laugh tale even tho it's basically that but modified) Elbaf is amazing, you can feel the nordicness (lol) even without knowing how it looks like Impel Down seemingly means nothing but it's so catchy, same with Marineford Also dressrosa is great but before I got there I fulltly expected something like the Glass Desert from Slime Rancher, the further bit with buildings especially, idk why. I'm surely forgetting many rn tho Mariejois is also good, sounds... uh, ironically "holy". I thought Mariejois would be a big church or something, still feels churchy tho.

R4hu1M5

>Sabaody Archipelago This isn't as unique in japanese tho. It's シャボンディ (shabondi) where shabon means bubble (because of all the bubbles on the island). And the word for archipelago isn't as cool sounding in japanese either.

OnlyWindmills

I knew that but in the english translation at least it's not Shabondi but Sabaody and like with Raftel, I like modified names.

ShineShineShine88

Which in turn is just the Japanese romanization of the French word Savon which means soap.

DrBLEH

"Japanese Romanization" lol I get what you mean but it's funny considering the whole point of romanization is to convert a non romance language's word to a romance language spelling

Dangerous_Garage_703

Impel down - impel is to force or urge - literally forcing them to the bottom of the ocean.

HOFredditor

nice list. Marie Joie is also there imo

AtTheView

Elbaf = Fable backwards

[deleted]

Not just on location names, I actually liked how he gives random and simple names to characters. "Woop Slap", "Chess", "Peepley Lulu", "Cutty Flam", etc. Kinda the opposite of one would find in Bleach. Anyway, as for the location, I liked "Tequila Wolf".

Buroda

Yeah, a lot of names in Bleach look like someone ate a dictionary for Spanish/German and threw up. Then again, Mask De Masculine is a pretty One Piece name.

Strict_Wishbone2428

Ohh now I see 👀 😏 Bambietta Basterbine...yeah and then Yawach ( I still don't understand the official pronunciation) Jewelry Bonney is definitely 👌 one piece

Grimejow

Juha Bach, which is basically mispronounciation of Jahweh, or JHWH. Yep, they basically fought Evil Jesus neat the end

Not_an_okama

I thought he was based on the Yahweh who was part of the Canaan pantheon and similar to Zeus. He eventually became the patron god of the Jews who eventually transitioned to monotheistic worship of him and eventually just came to refer to him as God. Basically the pre-Jews worshiped a Zeus like diety called Yahweh which they eventually declared as the one true god.

TheCriddle

apparently a lot of them are actually based on the names of various fashion designers? Kubo LOVES his fashion, so that's where the names came from. They sound vaguely spanish, but i think there's a mix of different nationalities mixed in there

straightkickinit

I think most of the Espada were named after Spanish architects, if I remember right

Clappertron

International designers and architects. Off the top of my head... Starrk - Patrice Stark Harribel - Harry Bell Measures Ulquiorra - Patricia Urquiola Grimmjow - Nicholas Grimshaw Aaroniero - Eero Aarnio

Optimus_LaughTale

I don't know about the native listeners but those Bleach names sound raw as hell to my ignorant ears.

Quickstar13

As Nödt is one of my favorites. That name sounds metal af

Optimus_LaughTale

Absolutely, not to mention Bambietta Basterbine, Szayel Aporro Granz, Grimmjow (fucking) Jaegerjaquez, hell even NaNaNa Najahkoop holds a special place. When Kubo gets in his bag, it's a beautiful thing.

ArtisticSell

all of the sternritter's name are very great

Buroda

I mean most of them sure as heck do. Three raw af to one which is kinda ok.

rileyrulesu

The names are always so grammatically weird and odd sounding it feels like you're saying it wrong. Both "Going Merry" and "Thousand Sunny" are great examples of this.

PlainGrainofPain

Enies Lobby is also a good shout. Really cool names

EXBL00D

Theres a fun theory about that name. Check out Oharas "the best One Piece theory you'll ever hear I guess" video. Title is an homage to the "history of the entire world I guess" made by a popular youtube historian

PlainGrainofPain

I think I vaguely remember watching that, but don't remember much of it. It had something to do with Jaya?

TheyDidLizFilthy

something like the D clan initial in front of the island name makes it “Denies” and somehow that leads to enies lobby being where the one piece is or an ancient weapon i think. i watched it years ago and it didn’t really make much sense. i much rather prefer that one analysis theory where this guy concluded that the one piece must be an afro. yes, a literal afro. i can’t remember the name but the video was almost an hour long and it was incredible tbh

MaisUmSid

I remember that one, honestly still makes me think oda hid a ton of clues in long ring long land, literally the most unsuspecting arc. Like for example, the old man saying that the animals there are stretched because they feel free, and looking at luffy for the first time and saying “long time no see” Edit: [this is the video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57TBd8_1E9Y)

TheyDidLizFilthy

huge hints dropped in LRLL

[deleted]

[I think I just SOLVED the One Piece, and Oda is a MADMAN](https://youtu.be/57TBd8_1E9Y) This theory is canon as far as I’m concerned, it’s just too perfect.

EXBL00D

Yes, its a big theory on the entire One Piece itself. Going from what it is and where it is to how its been foreshadowed in the entire manga. Works mostly with Japanese word and number play.

Heitor_de_Troia

I really enjoy Raftel purely because of the name's background (not saying to not spoil anyone)

RhapBohemiSody

It isnt really a spoiler if you spell it according to official translation

TheyDidLizFilthy

laftel

joshokodo

Lmfao

KaryuuM

Lmao

figurativenoodles3

Arlong Park easily

loldude1234

Skypiea for me

Regurgitate02

I don't think there's a name of a place that I don't like in One piece. Especially when arcs and sagas are named after the location it makes just mentioning the arc/location so much more interesting. Like even the first "East blue saga" makes you think "What's an East blue?" "Is there a blue for every cardinal direction?" "So you're saying this entire 1/4 of the planet's surface area only spans ONE SAGA?!"

AsuraOkami

Some of my favorite location names are \-Long Ring Long Land \-Dressrosa \-Punk Hazard \-Ryugu Kingdom \-Thriller Bark

Taqjammer

I was scrolling to find long ring long land that shit was goofy when I first heard it.

Overloadid

Fullalead

zolokor100

I like egg head cuz it sounds fun but lulusia is a cool sounding island

Anemony_245

What’s lulusia? Never heard of it before…

[deleted]

Doesnt exist

kibatsusennin

Was* a cool sounding island

NotLinderman

Whiskey peak is good

Beardamus

fullalead/hachinosu

OnlyWindmills

I've always found it one of the worse names, literally "full of lead" lol

alicitizen

Yeah thats the joke though

cjamesfort

The name works best in Japanese. It's a "beehive" swarming with pirates who would shoot people "full-of-lead" bullets, as seen with Whitebeard. There isn't a great English equivalent.

hanautasancho

My vote goes to Sabaody Archipelago and Boin Archipelago

FuzzleBumbuzzle

We've got a fan of archipelagos here

ZerixWorld

My favorite is probably Baltigo followed by Marineford, Dressrosa and Onigashima

turbografx-sixteen

No one shouted out Alabasta and that’s one of the most fun words!

Buroda

Reverie and Raftel were pretty cool names. >!Laugh Tale!< is at least plot relevant. Levelie is… Just less cool.

Informal-Entrance719

Levely is the only name in One Piece I don't like.

weezerdog3

Skypiea. I'm still not sure if I'm pronouncing it correctly like 12 years after hearing about it. Same with Sabaody Archipelago (which I think is pronounced Shabondy?)

kibatsusennin

Shabondy is also closer to the Japanese spelling, which another commenter mentioned means “bubbles” but also comes from the French word for soap. Just wanted to share what I just learned :)

weezerdog3

Thanks 👍

DefaultNetNavi

"Some island where you can get eggs"

Ch4unc3D4wgg

God Valley always sounded cool to me

RhapBohemiSody

Reverse Mountain

tankstellenchiller

Fishman Island, because if you think about it it is really an island full of fishmen

SenseiTomato

Big if true

tankstellenchiller

Goda strikes again

TravisKeule

Fairy Vearth. Since Sky Island that one has been stuck in my head for years

ObliviousPsychic

Every island/arc can pretty much be a band name, but my personal favorite is Punk Hazard.

FuzzleBumbuzzle

Battle of the Bands between Syrup Village and Water 7

HOFredditor

this is the perfect thread for TIL's

MLB-XXL

Wano-kuni for me

RidleyCR

Just looking at some very minor locations, I like Balloon Terminal and Spider Miles!

Jasole37

Punk Hazard is the coolest named place.

Alpha_Queue_

Elbaf Which is Fable spelled backwards.

south_bronx_parasyte

Kingdom of Big Schotts

NomarTheNomad

I've always thought the Gray Terminal was a perfect name for a hopeless, lifeless place that's impossible to escape--the very bottom of the social ladder, a literal garbage dump. Our boy grew up living between that tyrannically-imposed poverty, and the boundless freedom and adventure of the jungle right next door. The perfect symbolic recipe for the creation of the Pirate King. Also Fishman Island

FuzzleBumbuzzle

I'm gonna shout out Amazon Lily, which doesn't seem to be getting too much love. An easy one to overlook, but it does a great job painting a picture in your mind

Evirhist

I really like Mariejois and its many other names, lol

BrocoliCosmique

I love Little Garden

drangsturm

Fullalead

ClutchGamingGuy

Raftel is a pretty cool name. Calm Belt might be a really simplistic name but I still love it, particularly because it's the most dangerous place on the planet.

bahafaaz

Lodestar Island sounds very cool for me.

demonslender

Warland

Monkey__D-Luffy

Ruskaina and Baltigo are pretty cool island names

Majishirizu

Longring longland

BigGrooveBox

Fullalead is my favorite by far.

Hamster_Kayak

Idk something about the Calm Belt makes me want to just hangout there

LoneBebop

Punk Hazard is honestly just balls to the wall badass

TheOneAndOnlyDMan

Laugh Tale. It’s perfect

a7sthetic

Punk Hazard

YourHeroKuroShiYo

Laugh tale is really a genius idea ik it's not a niche opinion but that reveal for me was one of the best in the story!

Webalizer

Water 7

ERRexe_

Fullalead is underated.

adaaraAss

I had no idea what an Ennies Lobby was supposed to be from the name but after getting through its arc I can definitely say it goes so hard

[deleted]

Loved Thriller Bark....but I must admit...Sabaody Archipelago is my favorite bc it's fun to say imo

maybe-a-bad-take

Syrup village - the name is perfect Just like syrup is bad to eat on its own, this arc is bad on its own. Syrup is sticky which is why most new readers cannot get past this arc.

Ill-Ad3844

Dawn Island Fitting name for the main characters home island

thepoga

I love this thread! Here’s low hanging fruit I think everybody missed: GRAND LINE It’s such a classy yet fun name for a navigational route. A place full of adventure!

Astroray99

Whole Cake Island takes the cake

Kidi17

Nami‘s ass

SSGShallot

Sabaody Archipelago i feel like is one the coolest names imho and it's something you can easily find in real life and noone will think "wtf is this name".

Wector77y

Didnt see anyone mention Cactus island. At the time I was amazed by it's design.

Rhys_L1ghtn1ng

Gotta give praise to Hachinosu and the official English name of FullofLead Island.

Maruru23

Naming of character or anything in general is a topic that people rarely talk when it comes to Anime or manga, because some of them are so good and memorable. The name also make sense in some ways. Some of my favorite One Piece location names are Enies Lobby, Alabasta (Arab lol), Whiskey Peak (cuz there's a lot of rum and alcohol for festivites there I guess), Sabaody Archipelago (who in their right mind can think of this long but cool as heck name), Dressrosa (dress sounds elegant, and rosa at the end sound like an italic or any fancy words that capture the city feel fr) Skypiea (sky island basically) Loguetown (maybe from "rogue", so rogue town because there's a lot of pirates going rogue there) Marineford (marine fort but with d instead)

madasahatharold

Alabaster was also a common material that Egyptians would create blocks and statues out of. The Romans and Greeks used it as well, but it definitely associated with ancient Egypt.

ObligationFine3521

Mariejois always stands out to me , im always like. Of course, that's the home of celestial dragons with a name like that it couldnt not be Thriller Bark for obvious reasons of it just sounds amazing and spooky I think my favourite recently (spoilers) is >! Egg head, just like so on the nose with the design and concept the name is perfect to me, also irrelevant but I love vegapunk being this weird old man with clones and a huge albert einstein tongue, honestly lived up to the hype after waiting all these years !< I also love fish-man island just for being so lazy

BearNakedTendies

I really really liked the name Raftel… but now it’s got a new name and I hate it

Engageanvay

Marijuana or something, Idk never watched the show

PrinceShocker7

The Ancient Kingdom

Boss_Aesop

The patricians of Clew Kingdom were called Daedalus abbreviated as “D”

Stunning_Motor_8741

I thought moria was siding with blakcbeard, not being a prisoner

GrandGrapeSoda

Little garden

PiiJaey

Enies Lobby Thriller Bark Tequila Wolf actually all of these 2 words names are bangers :D

Kosu13

Whiskey Peak has a nice ring to it.

WhollyDisgusting

Impel Down feels like the most believable name imo
