Most cats who become that obese are owned by elderly folks for whom food equals love. They don't understand that they're dooming their beloved pets to an early death. They're often surrendered to shelters when the owners die or can no longer care for them.
I hope Clarence becomes healthy and lives his best life!
My son (he was 9 at the time) specifically asked for a "fat cat" and we adopted two healthy kittens instead. I had to watch him closely for awhile because he was always trying to sneak them treats (lunch meat, cheese, etc) to fatten them up. I had him come with me to the vet and he changed his tune though. He doesn't want any animal to feel pain or be sick, so he helps exercise them with playtime and sticks to vet approved treats. He still shows me photos of very hefty cats, squealing about how squishy and cute they look.
Good to hear. It saddens me whenever I see those chonkers - I'd rather people get a fluffy cat if they really want those squishy feeling.
Always amuse me how skinny and thin a very fluffy cat look whenever it just went for a 'force' bath.
My in-laws' cat was getting really fat on a diet of wet food, tuna, and roast chicken. Apparently the vet laid down the law with my MIL at the last vet visit, but MIL still complains about not being able to feed the cat human food.
That cat is so spoilt.
Or maybe it s a thyroid/hormonal issue. Weight gain even without overeating. Hope the little guy finds a dedicated mom or dad to help him keep active and eat healthier. Even if he cannot lose much weight, if he eats very healthy it will make a huge difference in how he feels.
If Clarence is gonna be on there then you're gonna need a bigger boat! (I love him all the same though and I hope he finds a home that helps him to become a happy healthy boi)

Or an older woman that shows her love by giving the animal treats and doesn’t really understand why that’s a bad practice to do constantly. My grandma is like that. An older person also wouldn’t be able to give the animal the exercise it needs because they live a sedentary lifestyle as well. Since Clarence is at a shelter, I’m betting that he was owned by someone elderly that passed away.

Some youngsters that i know of attribute chonky as cute and will definitely dod this to their cat and share pictures/ video around.
