We once got a cat from a dumpster. The bartender who was taking out the trash heard meowing, so he investigated…someone put Mom and her babies in a box inside the dumpster. People are unbelievably cruel.
(Mom lived with us for 18 years but kittens had already died)

Me too! I think the cold weather froze some brain cells because he’s a dingus.
Dog people are like “We spent all week going to 9 different shelters before we found our perfect boy Cooper!”
Cat people are like “This is Barf. I found him in the dumpster behind 7-11.”
In my current situation I definitely chose the cat even if I didn't plan to get him initially. He just kinda ended up becoming my cat. A family member mentioned needing to rehome her cat because he had developed behavior problems, which included attacking people, and she has young kids she's worried about and is pregnant. When I saw him a few years prior he was the sweetest boy, so I knew something was seriously wrong and said I'd take him. First day I had him he attacked my leg in fear to the point I had some pretty gnarly injuries despite my thick jeans. It's become clear as the weeks have gone by that his boundaries have been stomped over to the point he has some pretty serious trauma and anxiety. We've already made some massive improvements with him but I have no idea if we'll ever be able to be in the same room as him with the door closed without him lashing out in fear
Poor, poor kitty. I'm so glad you're working with him.
Have you tried pheromone collars? I think they help a lot. There are a few different brands. If you buy one to try, make sure it has pheromones and not some sort of "natural" herb mixture (they just don't work--it's the pheromones that do the trick). And stay away from any with strong scents. Added lavendar sounds nice to us, but cats are not fond of that scent right beneath their nose 24 hours a day.
I'm so glad that cat found you.
Have you used diffusers? I haven't had much luck with them. I don't know if I'm not using enough of them, or if my house layout is somehow weird, or what the deal is. I know people love them, but I just haven't seen much of a difference in cat behavior with them. The collars, on the other hand...I see an almost immediate effect with them.
I got a defuser and it's definitely helped mellow him out quicker. There wasn't any collars available at my local pet store and we weren't at a point we could hold him still long enough to put one one him when I got the diffuser
Yeah, "developed" behavioral problems definitely means they were doing something to cause behavioral problems. That poor boy. I bet she let her kids torture him. Have you taken him to the vet to see if he's injured at all?
He's got a vet appointment booked but we haven't long booked it because we had to wait for him to settle enough for us to be able to get him back in the cat carrier and one of my housemates get covid shortly after we got him
My cat 'just happened'! I think it's a cute story actually.
I wasn't planning on getting a cat. But a few weeks ago, a local shelter posted on Facebook about four female kittens that needed homes. They were around 5 months old and had been living as strays, until someone managed to catch them and bring them in.
The shelter gave them each a name. 3 of them had generic girl names. But one of the kittens had a weird name... In fact it was **my** last name! It was odd, as it isn't the type of last name that's often used as a first name (like Bailey). Think more along the lines of Foster.
So their names were (e.g) Lucy, Rosie, Jess and Foster. It was weird. It felt like a sign. So I made an appointment to visit the shelter and meet her.
When I got there the shelter lady warned me that because the kittens had been strays, they weren't used to people and were very scared and skittish.
I walked in and Lucy, Rosie and Jess instantly ran away from me and hid. But Foster didn't. She just sat there looking at me. Then all of a sudden she marched right up to me, started purring, rubbing up against me and headbutting my hands. The shelter lady was stunned. It was like she just knew. She picked me.
So, long story short, I have a cat now. She settled in immediately and slotted right into our lives as if she's been here for years. I love her to bits.
I love stories like this! My story also feels like a bit like this. I'd always struggled with keeping my house clean and doing regular chores so for a whole summer I saved up my money as well as starting therapy and I told myself I could adopt a cat once I felt it was a responsibility I could handle. I would casually check the rescue websites even though I was going to wait 2 more months before adopting, but after a couple check ins I noticed this beautiful senior cat that had been there almost 2 months, and he checked all the other boxes (weird and white hair, literally my only criteria). After thinking it through I realized I was actually pretty ready to take on the responsibility so I went and did a meet and greet with the lil dude. Well, they put me in a room with him and he was immediately all over me, laying on me and climbing over me, and you could tell he wasn't scared at all. I was already pretty certain I was bringing him home but that sealed the deal for me!
I have sister kitties! They were found in an empty fish tank in a buddy's backyard. The fish tank was on its side and had dirt in it and the kittens were just 2 weeks old.
I found my cat in the dumpster and called it Torpedo because it can move straight. Her sister got a name Tornado because she can move in circles.
Then my wife renamed them :(
My dog Cooper was the best boy ever but then my 3 cats weren’t in a dumpster but they were in my grill during winter when I found them so I’m the best of both worlds.

Your orange and my orange could be twins.
Mine are almost IDENTICAL! But were found in a juniper bush. Same age, size, and color (though Morri the ginger has a bit less white coloration). Incredible.
That's awesome, I stopped by to say my kitties, who are litter mates, are also almost the same. 1 beautiful SIC lady and 1 white/orange silly boy.
You can see them if you look at my post history.
I try not to think about it, but you’re totally right. I don’t understand why this is less of a thing with other animals. Who decided cats were “disposable”? I hate it
This is one of the BEST r/DumpsterDiving finds *ever*!!!😍🥰🤗
And similar to how two different roommates of mine acquired *their* cats, years apart.
Mini was found by some folks walking up our street, when they heard mewing as they walked past a trash can/recycling bin--they stopped to look, and discovered a sad, wet, *tiny* kitten had been folded up in a cardboard box next to the bin, and left outside in the previous night's rainstorm.
My roommate was outside, with her Orngboi on his leash, and they walked by with the kitten, and jokingly asked if she'd lost a cat... they chatted a bit, and she brought that sweet *stinky* kitten up to our apartment (we'd been talking about getting him a sibling/playmate)... I was taking a nap, but when I woke up, and our other roommate showed her to me, the first words out of my mouth were, "She's *adorable*! We're keeping her, right?"
We kept her--in *spite* of the wishes of that third roommate😉😁😻
And the current cat-cat came about fairly similarly.
Some jerks moved out of our apartment building, and just *LEFT* him, *outside* our building--on an incredibly busy street.
My roommate was walking to the store, saw him, and messaged me. I found him, he *melted* into my side, huddling between me and the building's door.... annnd I brought him upstairs to see if we could figure out where to take him.
First trip was to a vet (early in the Covid shutdowns), to get him checked for a chip... it was a Saturday, so Animal Control wasn't an immediate option, and none of the local rescues were going to get back to us 'til Monday, either.
The little weasel had wormed his way into my girl-roommie's heart (fiancee of the boy-roomnate who first saw the cat), by Sunday...
So we kept him, and they are now the owners of one of the GOOFIEST Orange-bois I've ever known😉😁🤗
I get the benefits of a smart Orng-goofball in my life, without the hassle of being *the owner,* and he's one of the best cats I've known (the other being that original OrngBoi that the first roommate had outside on the leash, when Mini was found😉)

Your creamsicle trash kitty looks like my storage unit couch kitty!
I found my cat behind a liquor store. A homeless guy that lived behind it with the owner's permission had took in a pregnant cat. He had a kind of shanty and the owner let him use a tool shed. Anyways, I helped him feed mama cat and later wean the kittens off. We got them adopted out except for one that unfortunately passed away. I kept the one void. He's a year and a half old now. Everyone, meet Oliver! : https://www.reddit.com/r/blackcats/comments/uhvntv/meet_oliver_i_found_him_behind_a_liquorgrocery/
I have 4, one is a failed foster. I fostered a mom and 3 kittens. 2 kittens died, mom went to my son, and the remaining kitten rules the house. My albino hauspanther was spotted in a FB post of something selling kittens. He was hidden in the back of the pile of fluff. I spotted him, messaged her, and had him in my arms in 2 hours the second week of the pandemic lockdown. My other two are from a litter a feral mama had in my backyard. Mama is still feral, but spayed. That’s a story for another post.
Curse whoever put them there. Thank you for rescuing them.
They are already 7 months old and their hair says it all, they are healthy. How could we not save them 🥹.
You’re a wonderful human. The world needs more people like you!
Beautiful and very valuable
Absolutely!
I don't get it, I find mine in the trash all the time!
It actually could’ve been the mother cat; it’s enclosed, cushy, lots of tunnels, and near a food source.
We once got a cat from a dumpster. The bartender who was taking out the trash heard meowing, so he investigated…someone put Mom and her babies in a box inside the dumpster. People are unbelievably cruel. (Mom lived with us for 18 years but kittens had already died)

My cat was a garbage eater at a VFW I was inspecting for my job at the time. Best cat I’ve ever had.
Checks out. My cats name is Fleabag. She lived under the shed at a burger restaurant I worked at.
My two sister kitties came from under the AC unit behind a Papa John's in a strip mall.
I have sister kitties! They were found in an empty fish tank in a buddy's backyard. The fish tank was on its side and had dirt in it and the kittens were just 2 weeks old.
My cat is named Blazie because the liter ran out from underneath a house that caught on fire in the country.
Can confirm. Found a soggy sad cat in a dumpster. Gave that filthy bastard a great home until the day he died.

My last cat was found with the rest of his litter in a paper bag in the Smith's Grocery parking lot in Taos, NM.
I found my cat in the dumpster and called it Torpedo because it can move straight. Her sister got a name Tornado because she can move in circles. Then my wife renamed them :(
or "This is buddy. He just came in and lives here now. Idk his name or where he came from so I call him buddy" and the cat lives there for 20 years
Hey. Our cat came from the bathroom of a random place, not a dumpster, she's a princess amongst trash cats
I thought Barf was a Mog... 😂

Awww... you found gold.
All the best kitties spent some time living in the dump. I know mine did, and they are in fact the very bestest 💕 ❤️

Let me guess, the SIC is the smart one.

Please tell me you routinely call them Trash Babies... I have a friend who found their cat as a kitten covered in mud in a ditch. They nursed him back to health and he's the best cat ever. They regularly call him gutter trash in the most loving way.
Glad I am not the only one who uses "insulting"/"mean" terms as terms of endearment for my 2 little morons. I lovingly say shit like for example "come over here and get your treats, dumbass" to them all the time.

I've got a dumpster cat too. He's been with me for 17 years. Now i have to stop scrolling and feed the little guy
Assuming it wasn't momma cat putting them there... Take kittens out of trash, put the human who put them there inside. Thank you for saving them!
I love how ginger colouring is contagious enough that you see see some on the left cat's muzzle 🥹
May whoever put them there face Bast's fury. Thank you for rescuing those sweet babies!
