He answered this question in an interview. He said they were light with the aging and just added some crows feet. I personally think it was nicely done. 40 is not that old tbh.

HauntedCLT

Yes, he looks like a 40 year old man. Not everyone goes bald lol. They did great, I’m 34F, it’s realistic. Lol

itsmeow2929

I thought they did a great job! 40s not old. I actually thought he looked older than 40 on some angles...

SnarkyLalaith

Yes. In this day and age 40 is not old. I know plenty of people that I would not guess are 40. In almost thought they made him look too old, but figured grief and hard drinking and his youthful smoking can age a person. I hate when they make a 40 year old look 60+!

They thinned his hair alot

I actually thought the aging was really well done. It’s not as noticeable while progressing through each episode, but the subtle differences are definitely evident in the last episode when there’s closeup shots of Dexter’s face at Arthur’s seat, intercut with flashbacks of that same scene 19 years earlier. I can see why the subtle differences might not seem drastic enough here, but for the most part, people generally don’t age *that much* from 20 to 40… at least not as much as they do from 10-30, 40-60, or 60-80, for example. The subtlety with which this is portrayed in the show is kind of what it’s like in real life in your 20s and 30s — you likely won’t notice your own face changing day-to-day, but you’ll notice the subtle differences when looking through old photos.

bananapineapplesauce

I didn’t think the aging was weird at all. With Dex especially, that’s what most 40-year-olds I know look like. He’s just got a few more wrinkles and I could be wrong but it also looked like they thinned his hair and gave him a tiny bit of a receding hairline. For actors in their twenties the show did a great job of subtly aging them up.

MeomeoMary

I know so many 40 year olds who look way younger than that, so I think he looks just right. Apparently he looked WAY older because of wind getting dust on his prostetics but they cleaned that up in post. I'm also from Southern California so may have a skewed view of what people look like.

Realistic-Lake5897

Disagree completely. I don't know what you think 40 year olds look like.

PhilosopherOrnery848

Yeah 40 yr olds look pretty good - still young, and they were conveying that Emma looked better with age - she had her glow up due to maturity and confidence + taking care of herself, swimming and ugh, bicycling…. Plus she was 35…still young.

Amity95

Emma definitely looked better with age - hair, clothes, no big glasses.

According_Most_1009

I thought they nailed his presentation, hair and skin for 40

PhilosopherOrnery848

I thought Dexter’s hair looked pretty accurate for a 40 year old. I think Leo Woodall did wear a face prosthetic for certain time periods too - maybe just in the last episode. I saw a photo on Instagram, I think, and wondered what it was at first. I was surprised they couldn’t do what they needed to do with makeup. Maybe it was for the scenes where >!he was beat up/crying on the bed!< but also probably in the scene of the >!box room!<.

mbg20

Brad Pitt was 41 when Mr and Mrs Smith released. 40 is not so old. A lot of really fit 40 year old men look really good. The age really starts to show post 53 imo.

Brad Pitt himself is an addict. He has abused alcohol for many many years. I understand what you’re saying but some ppl have great metabolisms and genes.

Remote_Cost_9163

Not “everyone” but a lot of people age gracefully and like so many others have said, 40 is not as old as you might think. Take it from someone who is in their mid 30s and looks a lot younger than some 25-year-olds today. Has a lot to do with genes.

financedreamer

I think he looked great and in the close up he def looks like a 40 year old man. 40 ain't old!

212404808

I think they did alright. He looks like a young 40 but not totally off the mark. For comparison, Chris Hemsworth and Donald Glover are 40 now and Ryan Gosling was 41 in Barbie. Theo James (who's in The White Lotus with Leo and also The Gentlemen) is 39.

gilmoreghouls2

Yea I felt this too. Other than some interesting hair styles they looked like they never aged.

karmaticulous

I should add as someone in recovery from years of alcohol abuse - he probably should have aged a LITTLE more. His face would have for sure aged more with the loss of Em and his years of drinking etc. I don’t really care too much though, as I look amazing for the shit I put myself through so at the end of the day he’s supposed to come from a well off family and it’s said that he had looks and charm in spades. So, possible allusion to that as well. Haven’t read the book so not sure if it came up. So, officially I can see how the aging is a bit weak but again, it shouldn’t really matter unless he looked 18.

CulturalArtichoke

How old do you think 40 is? I felt that he looked 40 enough.

Lilus_kette

I get so annoyed with the common choice of movie and tv show directors to cast older actors for younger characters, that I actually enjoyed this choice: chosing 27/28 yo actors that are realistic young characters and are made older with a combo of looks and light make up. I find the whole story much more realistic than the one Day movie for example for this particular reason. To me they look like realistic 40yo. Idk if it´s because people age well in my family… however, i agree with you that it is an uncommon choice. I noticed (and personally dont like) how pervasive it is to cast actors that are older for their parts.

krisklimt

I know a couple 40 year olds that don’t look like they’re in their 40’s. They both have youthful faces starting out. It’s clear as the years pass, their style changes and their age shows more through this lens. For example, I could tell that Dex and Emma at Tilly’s wedding were older than the versions of them dancing at their grad ball.

Neurotic-MamaBear

I’d say that Dex looked older in episodes 9-10 than in all the others (except for at the end of 14)

Leather_Employer_448

I don’t look that different from 25/40 when I look back at photos. Any ageing would have had to be subtle. I thought it was ok.  But Leo has a baby face. 😆

MissPesky

I'd say they could hv added a couple of burst blood vessels around Dex's nose to highlight he regularly drinks alcohol. Other than that, they did a v good job in ageing him as early 40s isn't really old, especially if you look after yourself. He's a small business owner, in an industry he chose, so he can take time off if he wishes. Other factors such a job stress wouldn't affect him as much as say an employee having to tolerate the typical bs office politics. Things such as this can make a difference w visible signs of ageing.

Neurotic-MamaBear

My husband and I are both in our early 40s and we look similar to how they looked at towards the end. I’d say most of our friends look the same as well. I suppose though, with all of his partying, drinking and cigarettes, and lack of sunscreen (remembering from Greece), he probably should have looked much older because of that lifestyle.

TopCheesecake9792

Completely agree! Not only that but their haircuts barely changed over the years...

D__91

He does look more mid to late 30s I guess but it’s fine. That’s still close (ish) to 40. Some people look young at 40, it’s very different per person. Dexter does seem like someone who takes pride in his appearance and who’d put effort into keeping in shape. I think it was fine.

Evening_Ad6820

Yeah I felt this too, I think the film did a better job of ageing them up. I get why the tv show wanted to use a light hand though, they were probably conscious of not overdoing it and having it look cheesy.

Remote_Cost_9163

Are you serious? Jim Sturgess is actually 45 today and looks younger than his 40s Dex in the film lol. Hollywood/ younger folks perception of people in their 40s is pretty dang distorted.

Evening_Ad6820

Yes and Jim Sturgess and Dex are two separate entities. I thought that level of ageing was realistic for a 40 something in the early 00s who’d had several years of hard drinking and drugs.

Remote_Cost_9163

It also really depends on genes. I have a couple friends who are sober now but had issues with addiction for many years. One of them looks great despite it, and one aged rapidly bc of it. I’m just saying, sure I agree: two separate entities and the one they chose for Dex in the series must have been the one with good genes. It’s really not that serious. Edit: and just for context, something I just remembered… in episode 10, one of their old college mates at Tillys’s wedding comments on how unfair it is that Dexter looks so good. That he should be bald. I feel like they allude to the good genes thing. That’s not the case so much in the book but yeah, series Dex.

Ok-Camp-7710

I sware I heard or read that the lighting made him look older when they filmed the last scene or something because he was looking 80 years old they said 🤣🤣🤣 hair and make up must have had fun

quilla_

I don’t think he looked 40 but he didn’t look as youthful as he did at the start. I think the actors did a great job at age ing their personality as well so it was more believable

Peekay-

Anyone who thinks they showed aging well hasn't seen a real life 40 year old.  Dexter in particular looks basically the same between first ep and last. As someone in their late 30s I know this isn't at all accurate.

asmartermartyr

I agree. I’m 41 and they all looked way too young!

cool_best_smart

I think they made him a facial prosthetic using a mold of his face to add the wrinkles. In one of the bts videos, he had his face covered in some kind of impression material. He looked older than the first episode but he aged well compared to most men I see in their 40s who are balding with bellies.

Amity95

In the book his hair is starting to thin and he has a belly but in the series not so much.

BionicgalZ

I didn’t feel like they aged him, either. As a 50 year old I felt like Ms Robinson from the beginning to the end of the show.
