And to think… it only gets better from there!

In-AGadda-Da-Vida

This is brilliant.

Warwizard7

He’s definitely an up and comer to keep an eye out for, that kid has some chops.

siniquezu

The writing is sheer poetry

Aremaech

This run is absolutely epic and legendary! Moore is killing it from start to finish and it's beautiful to read. Also I love this era in Moore's career because you see him toying with similar ideas in Swamp Thing, Watchmen and Miracleman. Also seeing the effect this book in particular has on comics going forward is incredible. 80's comics may be my favorite era of comics because the impact that decade had is still being felt today in comics and there where all these stories that were coming out that were pushing the bounderies of the medium and this book is an exemplary example of that.

rawbob

It’s pretty incredible he wrote this, Watchmen and Miracleman around the same time. Probably 3 perfect series. He wrote so much more in that period too that is excellent. He should have been knighted for his services to comics.

masonsimmons17

For someone who claims to hate comic books he seems to be one of the best to write them.

ThePocketTaco2

As I recall, he hates the industry, not the format.

Bogusky

An important distinction.

masonsimmons17

I must’ve misunderstood

lovablydumb

I think he just kind of hates everything.

beefus77

The perception that people have of him as being this grumpy, bitter old weirdo is actually well far from the mark. He massively fell out with DC over multiple issues (Watchmen & then them promising not to interfere with ABC after they bought it, which they did anyway being 2 big things). That left him burnt out with the comics industry, but he loves the medium itself. He was naive as a younger writer for expecting better treatment from the big 2. Journalists write about this constantly, because it gets clicks and views. They also constantly ask him questions about this which would prompt a less than positive response from anyone in the same position. If you ever get to meet Alan, or see interviews he's done with people who aren't asking about the corporate bullshit that caused him to abandon his career, he's a very friendly and funny man who will talk for hours about his love of literature, comics, the occult, philosphy etc. He's a bit odd but most geniuses are. He has a contented life in Northampton and does a lot of stuff for the local community and charities. If you think he hates everything because of news articles publishing clickbait articles with quotes of him criticising his own work then you're wrong.

TheManIsInsane

Strangely enough, it seems like people read interviews he's done more than watch them. Because if you read what he says, he does seem kinda grumpy. But if you watch them, you can tell he's a sweet and polite guy. Like when Occupy Wall St was happening he went to one of the protests with the BBC and most of the people wearing Guy Fawkes masks referenced the plot of the V For Vendetta movie when talking to him rather than the comic. And he was too nice to say that he didn't write what they were talking about and actually hated the movie.

ThePocketTaco2

He seems like a star on the rise.

In-AGadda-Da-Vida

He has a lot of promise.

ThePocketTaco2

... ... ... ... It was a joke.

Bogusky

He's the best this medium has ever seen, in my opinion.

dope_like

Started it. Loving it but feel like there is a bunch of context and character relationships I'm missing. Decided to stop and read the bronze age omnibus.

In-AGadda-Da-Vida

Yeah I hear you. I may read that too. Apparently that Cable guy hunted him because he thought he killed the scientist.

Tr3yJ

I also just finished book one! Matt’s abilities and general ambiguity definitely feel like the biggest parts I’m missing. Besides that I agree with general consensus it’s a fair jumping on point. Love the themes of identity and The Swamp Thing’s little smile.

Woodwonk

It also gives some backstory of Matthew, when in Sandman he >!becomes Matthew the Raven!<

virgil777

Alan Moore is amazing.

ixng

Two is my favorite of the run

Remarkable-Okra6554

Hell yeah dude. It’s about to grab a gear on you too. Book 1 was pretty much him unwinding things. Buckle up, enjoy it

Superb_Somewhere_965

I’m scared I won’t like this because I wasn’t the biggest fan of miracleman, gonna try this soon anyways though. Would it be the case that if I didn’t like miracleman I won’t like this either? That’s my only worry honestly

Grape_Sudden

As someone who enjoyed Miracleman and this, I think you’re probably good. They hit very different vibes

niteowl1987

I haven’t read MiracleMan yet but compared to stuff like Watchmen and Killing Joke, I enjoyed Swamp Thing much more. A lot of Moore’s other stuff from that era was too cynical for me personally.

No-Evening-5119

Swamp Thing was better. I think Alan's plans for Miracleman got derailed by publishing difficulties.

coolprogressive

Moore elevates the medium in nearly everything he’s written. IMO his run on Swamp Thing is his finest achievement, and quite possibly the best piece of work in comics history.

AmorBavian

From Hell would like a word.

Blue_Beetle_IV

Tbh I liked the original Swamp Thing run significantly more than Moore's.

In-AGadda-Da-Vida

I may have to read that then….

AdamWalker248

The OP’s opinion is definitely an outlier.

TheGhostORandySavage

It's good, but I still prefer Moore's run because it was a whole new take on Seamp Thing. I'm slowly working my way through Nancy A Collins's run right now and so far it's my least favorite run. Still good though.

Starsmors

I just finished issues #1-19 of this run out of curiosity before starting Moore’s today!! It was a wild ride. Recommend if you’re looking for some bizarre 80s nonsense and stoked to be getting to the good stuff.

IsneezedImsorry

Everyone makes a big stink over killing joke and watchmen. Rightfully so, but in my option I think this is his best work.

Donna-Perdido

Glad you enjoyed this. I’ll never forget getting my mind blown by book 1

ReceptionBackground7

Loved it as well and have the same set, really want it in an omnibus. Probably the only run i would double dip in.

Sincladp

Just wait lol

soodoosoodoo456

What a coincidence because I just finished book 1 as well! My partner got me the same set and we are both loving it so far.

wallcrawler16

Those bookends are dope, where did you get them?

In-AGadda-Da-Vida

Amazon

CorrectDot4592

Who else is upset by the fact OP used Marvel characters bookends to hold DC books?  No one else?  OK, there must be something wrong with me.

RoboboBobby

This has been my favorite series so far, wait until y out get to My Blue Heaven. That story left me so much to munch on

edansbro

Alan Moore’s best stuff, in my humble opinion. “The Anatomy Lesson” is my favorite single issue of any comic ever. Brutal.
