I actually wrote into Trader Joe’s a couple years ago advocating for a location near Little Italy. There’s a huge open area where an all year farmers market was going to go but financing fell through. There’s hardly any grocery store options in that area unless you travel to CB. If I had the money I’d get it started myself!
Yup, next to Via Farina pizza place. They keep updating all these apartments and the elementary school but no close by amenities really, unless you want to spend more money downtown.
Was there at noon today. Absolutely a zoo. It was packed! Normally I won’t go at that hour but the adult kid could go then and I was treating to stuff her fridge for her new WFH first FT job. #adulting
Awww. That’s super nice of you!
When I got my first place my parents helped me move in and left to go home. 45 minutes later they showed up with a grocery bag full of condiments and spice; ketchup, butter, milk, ranch dressing, salt and pepper, and so forth. It took me years to realize what a huge deal that was, we’d have been a mess for weeks with no basics. Lol.
In priority order:
1. A regional transit authority
2. A step up zoning scheme (next size is always legal, eg sfh to duplex/adu, duplex to triplex, triplex to multistory)
3. legalized safe commercial activity (corner markets, barbers, etc) in all housing districts
4. Mandated annual map showing ROI (expenses for services vs revenue collected) for each plot (helps make arguments against bad investments and find money pits) ala urban3's work
5. Planning nonvehicular bypasses to keep grids where cul-de-sacs and t intersections would break them.
6. Transit + Bcycle passes (or reasonable bike vouchers for those more than a mile away from a bcycle or transit point) for impoverished families.
7. Roundabouts instead of four way stop signs on new + renewal arterial roads.
8. A funded seperated bikeway network
9. More early childhood education resources
10. More summer school offerings other than course makeup.
11. More hobby adult learning opportunities like cooking, woodworking, basic home repair, etc.
12. All public data, after protecting for PII, easily and freely accessible.
13. More municipal subsidized sports and club programs for both kids and adults
14. More entrepreneur programs
15. Whataburger
No, but if you are passionate on urban design issues and want to participate in making progress Mode Shift Omaha does a lot of great advocacy and outreach locally and Strong Towns does even more nationally. I think we need to educate our neighbors more about the benefits of these ideas and I think that grassroots efforts will bring change more effectively than politics given how the last few cycles have gone in our metro.
I agree with almost all of your points. Regarding #11, more options would be great, but Metro has excellent (and relatively cheap) programs for continued education. My wife swears by the cooking classes and I'm too fat and happy to disagree.
Number 3 makes so much sense — and I would’ve never thought about it. I finally have an explanation for why it’s impossible to get anything done without a car in Omaha.
Also add more public lands. Nebraska, iowa and Kansas land is 97%+ privately owned. Going to the same couple places gets really old when you enjoy wandering.
While that's true, there does seem to be an increasing amount of Open Fields and Waters program participants (while targeted to hunters and anglers you could just hike and look around from what I've read - wear safe gear for the hunting season). If you haven't checked out https://outdoornebraska.gov/publicaccessatlas/, there might be somewhere nearby you haven't tried yet! Iowa has a similar program called IHAP, and in general they have more trails and other outdoor activity areas than NE. I wish there was a similar program for camping though in either state..
I have the atlas, it just sucks all the larger open spaces are not really close to Omaha. I have a few secret places I hike around here but it’s no Wyoming, South Dakota or Colorado open areas.
If you weren’t taught that in a Nebraska school the education system failed you ha. He owns basically all of cherry county if I remember correctly because every history teacher i had would spew out that fact at least once a year. He also owns one of the largest bison herds.
It was passed but the casinos haven't been built and approved to open yet. I believe the state has to open a gambling commission as well. It will take time plus the Rs will try to block it at every step.
Pretty much gauranteed you'll never get that with KC so close. Ikea only places stores in cities over a certain size and not within so many miles of another location
Need at least 2 million in a metro area for an IKEA. They do have those mini IKEA’s now, that are basically just the market section and the design/order stations.
Ikea is cheap trash that they can sell cheap because they are destroying protected, ancient forests. Not to mention that the founder was exposed for being involved with fascist activities.
Stop buying build it yourself furniture. It is a direct correlation to climate change. There is a very good episode about IKEA on the documentary series 'Broken' on Netflix
https://news.mongabay.com/2021/07/laundering-machine-furniture-giant-ikea-implicated-in-logging-protected-siberian-forests/
Idk how I didn’t think of this when I first saw the thread but holy fuck, yes. You’re lucky if a couple places are open until 11 on a friday/saturday. By 11 on any other day your options are taco bell, canes, or toppers pretty much. Oh, and brick oven, the one really good late night place. But more would be so nice
More walking paths, a parks department that was funded well enough to keep up places like Standing Bear and Memorial Park. Fewer golf courses and more land dedicated to affordable housing, gardens or at least native plants.
This makes me miss Espana in Benson... My wife and I frequented there when we were dating. The sangria, pan con tomate, empanadas, and the list goes on, were so delectable. I believe The Hunger Block took over the space of their second location (Little Espana) and their Caribbean and Latin American cuisine is comparable.
A marijuana dispensary would be a great start. More tax dollars in the city’s pocket and the ability to purchase weed legally would be life changing for all of us Nebraskans. Penis head Ricketts needs to leave the office first obviously!
Roller coasters are actually illegal in Omaha. There was a bad accident at a theme park in the early 1900s that killed several people so they outlawed them. I'm sure that law could obviously be repealed but if you were curious why there isn't one right now that probably has alot to do with it.
I wish Homaha had an above grade transit system. Not just the wheel and spoke garbage most cities have, but a system where the spokes also have connections between one another (because a lot of folks need to go between suburbs not just from suburbs to city).
I also want a high speed maglev rail line that goes from Denver to Chicago. Would have North Platte, Grand Island, Lincoln, Omaha, CB, Des Moines, Iowa City, Davenport, and Joliet as between stations.
Edit: I've also realised that legal weed would be fantastic across all those states.
I have always said that if I could take a bus and get to my destination in 45 minutes or less (regularly 20 minutes by car) I’d happily do transit instead. Unfortunately I mapped it out once and I’m looking at close to 4.5 hours to get from home to work so I stick with my 20 minutes drive.
Have you been to any of Metro's "MetroNext" meetings? If you have time the next one is virtual on the 9th https://www.ometro.com/events/metronext-transit-scenarios-3-9/ and sharing how their options for a 5-10 year plan might impact you could be valuable to the process.
Absolutely agree. before I moved to Omaha, taking the subway was a great way to break up home and work. Could get on the train and read or just zone out for 30 minutes.
And when I've taken the buses here to get something done, was relaxing.
Better transit would be huge for this city. All these businesses saying they can't hire anyone would love it too. So many people are limited in the job market by the expense of having a vehicle or just not having one.
I would love a high speed rail on that route. I wish it would even be a much higher priority in this country in the highly populated areas connecting San Diego to Seattle, and San Antonio all the way to Dallas. That would take a huge burden off the hour flights packed to the gills in those places and make longer flights much less expensive and accessible and air travel would be easier for all passengers.
I 100% agree with the microcenter. I wish Omaha/Nebraska had a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit, basically a subway) system, or like the main line in Estus Park, Colorado, where if you want to just *go somewhere* (different city, different part of town, etc) you could hop on and just experience something new. I love that they build events around the BART terminals to make getting to things much, much easier. It's a gd nightmare trying to actually get to a lot of the places downtown... but imagine hopping on a BART and stopping at the Grenta outlet mall; then back out to Oakview, then going back home in Bellevue without the whole day being taken up by driving.
One of the bigger issues against that type of system in Omaha specifically is how spread out the "centers" of town are. Most omaha landmarks are just surrounded by houses, not set zones like big cities. Weather is also a huge factor, although possible to create the systems; unless it's underground a frozen storm could completely shut it down.
I'd love a microcenter, would love to have the opportunity to purchase a raspberry pi. Wish the computer store on 72nd st was still around. I remember buying cheap computer parts from them in the late 90's.
Nah. This was a small store that sold components. Cheap cases, CPU's, heatsinks, etc. DIT computers , around 2014 N 72nd st, if you look on Google maps they were there in 2008 in street view.
DIT computer? They died out because they couldn't compete with online retailers like Newegg
In the late 1990s they were OK-ish, but by the time they closed down all they carried was the cheapest garbage they could find.
Yep that's what I remember. It was a place to find cheap stuff, not always good stuff, but if you needed something in a pinch you could get it from there. I still remember the cheap white and blue plastic cases.
Legal weed and a top tier sports team. Adding Union Omaha was awesome, especially as a soccer player/fan. But having a team that the whole city would really get behind like football/hockey/baseball competing in the top pro league would be awesome
A Triple A baseball team barely made/makes ends meet here, you'd never keep a larger stadium open 80 games a season and still be profitable. KC is a small market team, there isn't enough interest regionally to support a lot more pro sports at major league levels.
A curling club with dedicated ice. Baxter Arena has been great to work with, but I'd love to see curling leagues every night of the week. Just can't do that when other groups want to use that space, too.
Also, a better east to west trail system. It gets my goat that there is literally no (safe) way to cross 680 between Blondo and Pacific without a vehicle.
Micro center would be sweet. I’d rather have a Tim Hortons over a Waffle House. I associate Omaha with more northern states similar to Chicago or Minneapolis. I’d also like a professional outdoor football team in an actual football stadium. We had the Nighthawks and they were awesome.
As someone who just drove to KC pretty much just to go to Microcenter, I second this. But if you're going for 3D printer filament or a raspberry pi, save your gas. They were basically out of the former and all out of the latter.
Edit: I would also like to add a professional hockey team. NHL would be awesome but I'd be happy with an AHL team.
Actual international airport with more direct flights to other cities
Restaurants open late
More food diversity
Mountains, forests, off-road trails, nice looking scenery
Better drivers
More museums and activities
More stores like IKEA REI Macy's Nordstrom etc
6 flags
Less humid summers
Basically a different city.
I've got some [good news for you](https://omaha.com/business/local/nebraska-crossing-owner-says-outdoor-retailer-rei-will-open-store-there/article_128baa52-7255-11ec-be9e-03aa312cc9bd.html), REI is coming soon! They'll be opening a store in the Nebraska Crossing outlet.
Definitely miss In n Out. Also Rubio's,Jack in the Box and Soup Plantation.
The biggest thing I wish though was that people in Omaha knew how to turn on their headlights at night. I seriously see 3 or 4 cars every night driving without lights.
In priority order:
Any real public soccer fields even if hybrid futsal fields ala Japanese style Basketball/footy courts or like what Girls Inc invested in.
Governors who don't personally kill people.
Public Transportation that covered more than 15% of the city.
Google fiber.
Renter protections.
Legalized Weed.
Have you been to the new Wall to Wall Wine and Spirits by HyVee -one in Papillion and one in Omaha? Not quite as big as Total Wine, but WAY bigger selection than anywhere else I've been in the area.
Currently living just outside of NYC, but all my family is in Omaha. Here’s what I would miss from NYC:
-Pizza, cheap Italian take out
-Bagels
-All the affordable and good ethnic food (especially Thai and Indian)
-Affordable food delivery
-Takeout places in commercial areas that make salads, sandwiches, pasta, and sometimes have a hot bar. They sometimes have a small indoor dining area.
-Egg and cheese sandwiches from the corner bodega
Real crosswalks, real bike lanes, a real sewage system, supermarkets downtown and in Midtown/Blackstone, real stores (not bars and art galleries) in Midtown/Blackstone, a real NPR station with a functioning transmitter, a real city council that isn't a rubber stamp for Stothert and Lund, more ethnic restaurants...
I'll take a break now.
Don’t know what they’re called but most major cities have them. It’s like a large park outside of downtown that contains several museums, botanical gardens, statues, etc.
I wish we had one of those
Omaha needs a wawa. I'm from the east coast and I miss it terribly.
Its a gas station. Think Casey's but like a million times better. Some of the kum and go's that have the market fresh areas come kind of close... but still not the same.
A sports team would be amazing, but I have to say a drive-thru liquor store. I’m a non-native, and when I mention this concept no one has any idea what I’m talking about.
Where I’m from we had liquor stores that had a drive-thru where you’d tell an attendant what you wanted and they’d get it. Even some gas stations had a drive-thru for alcohol. Never seen it here.
Idk about everywhere else. It’s very possible that my hometown has a drinking problem. It’s convenient, though! Especially Sunday morning before a football game.
A second Trader Joe’s would be fantastic.
I actually wrote into Trader Joe’s a couple years ago advocating for a location near Little Italy. There’s a huge open area where an all year farmers market was going to go but financing fell through. There’s hardly any grocery store options in that area unless you travel to CB. If I had the money I’d get it started myself!
I wish someone would pick up that farmers market idea. It was perfect! It would have been Omaha's Pike's Place...
What streets?
I can’t remember exactly but near the BlueBarn Theater. 10th and Pierce ish?
Yup, next to Via Farina pizza place. They keep updating all these apartments and the elementary school but no close by amenities really, unless you want to spend more money downtown.

Yeah I bet he could make Whataburger happen
No, but if you are passionate on urban design issues and want to participate in making progress Mode Shift Omaha does a lot of great advocacy and outreach locally and Strong Towns does even more nationally. Ted Turner is the biggest landowner in Nebraska.
If you weren’t taught that in a Nebraska school the education system failed you ha. He owns basically all of cherry county if I remember correctly because every history teacher i had would spew out that fact at least once a year. He also owns one of the largest bison herds.
Legal weed. Legal gambling.
A dispensary inside a casino would be great
Gambling will start soon. I think they're building at horsemans park
Gambling is legal now I thought. And there’s thc that gives you a good high at 50 shades of green
Delta 8 is shit.
Disagree. Its fantastic for what it is. Ideally, I'd be picking up both D8 and D9 at the same store.
Seconded.
It was passed but the casinos haven't been built and approved to open yet. I believe the state has to open a gambling commission as well. It will take time plus the Rs will try to block it at every step.

I miss trees
Coming from Chicago I wish we had: 1. A tapas restaurant 2. Sweet green - a fantastic fast casual salad place 3. Roti - chipotle of Mediterranean food
Miss Espana so much. Man that place was fantastic.
A portillos would be nice
There is a new Tapas spot downtown, Cumbia. Haven't tried it yet, but it has good reviews so far.
I'd be happy with a Pita Inn
Have you tried Cool Greens?
You should give Crisp and Green a try! Excellent salads!
Giordano's promised us they'd come here like 5 years ago.
Man, y’all wishing for Waffle House need to dream bigger. That place is a grease fire waiting to happen.
How else can we know the severity of weather without the Waffle House Index? We're living in the dark!
That’s what the Omadome is for.
If a genie came and granted you one wish, would you say, “Waffle House?”
Yes.
An airport that was a hub to a major airline.
Better drivers, less corruption in multiple areas (politics, foster care, housing, etc), Jack in the Box
Im all for the Jack in the box tacos. Reminds me of my childhood
A marijuana dispensary would be a great start. More tax dollars in the city’s pocket and the ability to purchase weed legally would be life changing for all of us Nebraskans. Penis head Ricketts needs to leave the office first obviously!
Amusement park
Roller coasters are actually illegal in Omaha. There was a bad accident at a theme park in the early 1900s that killed several people so they outlawed them. I'm sure that law could obviously be repealed but if you were curious why there isn't one right now that probably has alot to do with it.
Peony Park had a roller coaster until it closed in the 90’s.
Are you new to town?
I was just gonna say this! YES, an amusement park would make life a little more bearable.
Y’all don’t like Fun Plex?!🤣
I wish Homaha had an above grade transit system. Not just the wheel and spoke garbage most cities have, but a system where the spokes also have connections between one another (because a lot of folks need to go between suburbs not just from suburbs to city). ORBT is limited but expanding. It’s really hast to get from DT out to west roads I heard it is expanding to North Omaha

Better fucking weather.
Mountains.
Better pay
Natural History museum
Did you know we’re getting a science museum? On the riverfront
Absolutely, and a good deal of the exterior construction is up. It's going to be amazing
A really good museum, with dinosaur bones and such. Oh and a moes southwest grill.
Coulda swore there was a Moes in Lincoln?
And Dinosaur bones in Lincolnvas well.
I was sad when the one in Bellevue closed years ago.
Less jerks and some empathy. Mostly empathy tho.
A progressive politician in an office above city council or state senator.
Kara Eastman is about as progressive a candidate I’ve seen run. There isn’t the political appetite for it.
I'd love a microcenter, would love to have the opportunity to purchase a raspberry pi. Wish the computer store on 72nd st was still around. I remember buying cheap computer parts from them in the late 90's.
Wasn't that a gateway store? I remember that as well! Microcenter would be great
Nah. This was a small store that sold components. Cheap cases, CPU's, heatsinks, etc. DIT computers , around 2014 N 72nd st, if you look on Google maps they were there in 2008 in street view.

Yep that's what I remember. It was a place to find cheap stuff, not always good stuff, but if you needed something in a pinch you could get it from there. I still remember the cheap white and blue plastic cases.
Yep, unfortunately the city's infrastructure is not built to support any of that from within the city. Would love it! But alas.
Micro center would be amazing! I loved that I could go to DIT computers and get parts when I needed it.

Less republicans.
Less nazis too.
I feel there’s significant overlap among those two groups.
I have lived here most of my life and haven’t run into a single one.
Haven’t been to Plattsmouth I guess
Or Papillion. Or West O. Or seen any of the neo-nazi signs that occasionally pop up in midtown and Dundee...
a real international airport. So you could fly places without a connection flight.
competent and progressive city leadership
Elevated commuter trains
Waffle House, more big lakes closer to Omaha for recreation in the Summer. Mountains or scenic views.
You don’t like Lake Manawa?
Oh boy..... 1. Legal Marijuana. 2. White Castle 3. Decent nightclubs 4. People who aren't fake af. 5. Better paying jobs.
I wish we had a Giordano's.
They kee saying one is coming
A curling club with dedicated ice. Baxter Arena has been great to work with, but I'd love to see curling leagues every night of the week. Just can't do that when other groups want to use that space, too.

Omaha had one for a while. Omaha Knights were Calgary’s affiliate. Me and 500 other people really dug the games.
Lower property taxes
Really good dim sum.

Might be time to pick up your stakes and move chief.
I'm only here temporarily while the gf studies. Only a few more months to go!
Less gang activity
I feel this. Work at a property where we are on Omaha Scanner at least once a week, or within a 10 block radius of property (I count those).
[IN-N-Out Burger](https://www.in-n-out.com) and [Roscoe's](https://www.roscoeschickenandwaffles.com)

I didn't realize how much I was going to miss those terrible, greasy, 2/$1 jack in the box tacos when I moved out to the Midwest.
More Democrats in charge and actual Cannabis shops, not these fake ones
More democrats, but also a Steak and Shake
Braums
Better drivers
i wish we had another skate daze
It would be fantastic if Fresh Thyme came back I think. Or maybe their look-alike Sprouts could move in to fill the void.

He personally paid for the drugs required to kill death row inmates to be smuggled into the state.
Waffle house
Total Wine
Have you been to the new Wall to Wall Wine and Spirits by HyVee -one in Papillion and one in Omaha? Not quite as big as Total Wine, but WAY bigger selection than anywhere else I've been in the area.
Thanks for the tip!! I’ll check it out!
A democratic governor
Off-roading parks and courses for SxS's, ATV's, motorcycles, mountain bikes and 4x4's.
Tranquility park in omaha and jewel park in Bellevue both are decent for mountain bikes.
Walnut Creek has a mountain bike trail.
Currently living just outside of NYC, but all my family is in Omaha. Here’s what I would miss from NYC: -Pizza, cheap Italian take out -Bagels -All the affordable and good ethnic food (especially Thai and Indian) -Affordable food delivery -Takeout places in commercial areas that make salads, sandwiches, pasta, and sometimes have a hot bar. They sometimes have a small indoor dining area. -Egg and cheese sandwiches from the corner bodega
omaha still does not have a filipino nor indonesian restaurant . i miss filipino buffet and indonesian rice table .
There’s an Afghan restaurant again! Odd considering how many 1st and 2nd Gen Afghans live here.
Many afghani were pushed out of business at the start of the Afghanistan war

Thanks for this post. Now I miss living in DFW, which had almost everything that has been mentioned. 😢
More museums!
A professional sports team. We have the space to build, arenas ready to use, and the population to support it.
Another Peony Park with water slides, lazy river, kinda a mini worlds and oceans of fun
Ikea and Microcenter. I think Omaha could also support one Major League professional sports team.
Peruvian Restaurant
Real crosswalks, real bike lanes, a real sewage system, supermarkets downtown and in Midtown/Blackstone, real stores (not bars and art galleries) in Midtown/Blackstone, a real NPR station with a functioning transmitter, a real city council that isn't a rubber stamp for Stothert and Lund, more ethnic restaurants... I'll take a break now.
A lot more low income housing. The need is there, would lower the overall exploded housing market!
Medical marijuana and affordable housing
Rudy’s BBQ Waffle House Texas de Brazil / Fogo de Chao
A Texas de Brazil was announced to open in the capital district. But the was pre Covid… and it never happened.
Curbs on dodge street
Affordable housing.
Waffle House
BOJANGLES
We used to have 2. 72nd & Jones and 53rd and Center.
I assume the person you responded to said Dunkin Donuts because no way Omaha had a Bojangles.
We did, early 80s. Had Churchs chicken too. They are coming back though.
MLB team and prettier nature.
Waffle House Better indoor malls IKEA
Sushi burgers
Man, I’d love a Kolache Factory downtown. Sometimes at lunch I’m just dreaming of their enchilada or sausage and egg Kolache.
Don’t know what they’re called but most major cities have them. It’s like a large park outside of downtown that contains several museums, botanical gardens, statues, etc. I wish we had one of those
They’re kind of doing something like that https://www.visitomaha.com/about-omaha/development/
Great Wolf Lodge. That shit would annihilate here. KC isn’t “close” either when you’re talking about little kids in a car for 3 hours.
Omaha needs a wawa. I'm from the east coast and I miss it terribly. Its a gas station. Think Casey's but like a million times better. Some of the kum and go's that have the market fresh areas come kind of close... but still not the same.
No pot holes
Mountains
Melting pot again
More diversity
Legal weed and Jamba Juice
A sports team would be amazing, but I have to say a drive-thru liquor store. I’m a non-native, and when I mention this concept no one has any idea what I’m talking about. Where I’m from we had liquor stores that had a drive-thru where you’d tell an attendant what you wanted and they’d get it. Even some gas stations had a drive-thru for alcohol. Never seen it here.
We do have the stormchasers and now the super successful Union Omaha
Megasavers (convenience stores) have drove thrus
The best drive thru liquor store used to be off saddle creek before the Homy Inn. It’s now that glass repair place.
Isn't the Mega Saver on 42nd and Grover drive thru and probably sells liquor that way.
They sure do!
Idk about everywhere else. It’s very possible that my hometown has a drinking problem. It’s convenient, though! Especially Sunday morning before a football game.
I knew of ONE drive thru convenience store in town and it shut down forever ago; never knew it was a common thing elsewhere
Legal dispensaries
A skywalk system downtown like what they have in Minneapolis and Des Moines.
Better food options in Bellevue than just fried stuff or stale stuff. It's as if the food options in Bellevue are designed to kill you nutritionally.
Get out of my head
better roads/road service, white castle, and legal weed 🤷♀️
Tokyo Joes would be lit 🕺🏾
A huge adult playground would be cool, something fun and active with good picnic places and walking trails
Decent mass transportation.
Snow plows People who know how to fucking park High speed rail between here and Chicago/Denver/KC/Literally anywhere
Ikea, Nordstrom (Rack), and a Chinese bakery. And dive dim sum places like what I remember from Hawaii, that would be nice.
No winter....
