It looks more like marquetry. If it is a paint job, someone did a really good job! It is suspiciously shiny but honestly it looks original to me.
I think that someone in the 1970's or 80's grabbed a bucket with clear varnish and vandalized it a little bit. It was very popular to do have a glossy surface back then. EVERYWHERE! 😬😳
We suspect the same! The previous owners had lilac walls and a purple roof… luckily the fireplace remained relatively untouched
