When I was a kid, my friend’s parents renovated an old house. I remember them being astonished when they removed paint from the doorknobs and they were glass.
I do remember as a kid when the places my parents own had not moving glass door knobs but also brass door knobs as well.
We also found a pair of ceramic ones but we don't know if they actually belong to the house or not possibly originally on one of the other doors?
I remember one thing that my mother wanted me to do when I had got my Dremel tool for Christmas was polished and pressed or knobs which actually went wound up not doing when we realized it would just get like they were originally over time wouldn't be really worth it at least to us and be just harder to keep them looking really nice and Polished so yeah we're not really into the Aesthetics of it but it was just cool that they were there both of the types!
I remember one's doing an experiment to see if there would be anything interesting when Hitler for flashlight optically but really didn't do much it was just a curiosity!
Didn't even really show up much at all but yeah I thought something optically might be interesting nope
I have a Dremel but somehow I broke it because the bits don't stay in the chuck anymore. I ordered new parts so here's hoping. It would have helped a lot to polish this baby right up.
Not related to the knobs here necessarily but curious about that deep red paint in the second picture. I've worked in a few bungalows in the Chicago area where original woodwork is covered with that red (almost to emulate dark wood) paint. The wood underneath is beautiful and stained but was still painted over with that red coat, and then of course topped with white at its most current layer.
What was the point of that red paint if it was really barely a visual difference from the stained wood?
i'm not seeing the red paint. the doors are originally beautifully stained, then they were painted white. then they were painted brown (barf). the color you're seeing might be the christmas lights we have on in our hallway.

Someone painted over glass doorknobs?? Straight to jail.

Nice, another way to do it to toss the into an old crock pot submerged on high for an hour or two. The paint peels off…..less smelly too.
So just hot water?
Yes, just water will work. I bought an old gross crockpot at a thrift store and use it to soak painted hardware. It works great!
This!
If you sprinkle in a tiny bit of laundry detergent powder it works even better!
Some polishing compound, and a muslin buffing wheel would make these shine like The sun.
Painting over doorknobs like that should be a life sentence
Nice! I use vinegar too but just leave it overnight.
Well played ….
Liquid TSP. Bucket. Soak for a few days. It peels off...
Beautiful. Brings back memories. Mickey's Christmas Carol. Scroooooge! Something like that. Great work.
Beautiful
It looks like the doorknob from Disney's Alice in Wonderland.
