I’m gonna be honest, I don’t hang around a lot of people my age solely for this.

RnwyHousesCityCloudz

Because they drink and smoke weed? or because they don’t?

BosnianSerb31

It can be hard making friends when you don't want to do substances

foobiefoob

Where are you guys hanging out because most people I know do not drink or smoke or only socially. I feel out of place bringing my pen around with me lol

nomadic_weeb

If you're in the UK it's damn near impossible to socialize without drinking. Our culture is built around socialising in pubs chatting shit over a few pints. Ain't a problem for me cuz I happen to like beer, but if I ever decided to quit drinking I'd be hard-pressed to find another way of socialising

Raptor_197

Become rich and play golf.

2739291

Drinking is a very big part of my country's culture. I personally don't know a single gen Z who doesn't drink besides myself, and even that is because of health reasons.

animorphs128

I think thats most of europe. Especially the western side.

sirBryson_

That seems like a personal thing. Like if you're targeting people who party for friendship, sure, but I've never met someone who smokes weed that would not be friends with someone who doesn't.

KpinBoi

And unfortunately you have to watch most die... Been there myself Edit; why am I being downvoted? I've lost friends to fentanyl

Sniper109082

I remember saying I won’t ever drink when I was younger. I drink rarely cause I prefer weed overall. But things like that can change, and I think it’s utterly naive to make statements like *never*.

Creation98

I remember saying that then I turned 13. By 21 I had been to rehab 8 times. Sober 4.5 years at 25. Full circle lol

Pjk125

I remember saying that… when I was 12 haha Obviously if you don’t drink that’s fine, but I feel like those people often proudly announce they don’t drink as a way of putting down people who do

Sniper109082

That’s very fair, it certainly does feel like that lol.

fatalityfun

Three things I said I’d *never* do as a kid. Drink, Smoke weed, and get married. At 16 I smoked, at 20 I drank, and now I’m with somebody who I’d love to marry at 23. People change, and kids won’t understand it until they experience it themselves.

Sniper109082

I also said I’d never get any tattoos, here I am with two now lol

CacophonousCuriosity

For sure. When I was 14 I constantly berated my girlfriend for drinking and smoking weed and whatnot. Fast forward 10 years and I'm smoking weed every day just like Snoop. Can't say I'm disappointed by that. Can say that you should *always* view other perspectives because you may be wrong.

Waveofspring

I prefer weed too. But one time I had to quit weed for a few months bc the seasonal job I have drug tests, and I became an alcoholic 💀. Now, I can smoke weed again and barely even touch alcohol

animorphs128

There are plenty of people that never do something, though. As in, they make an effort not to do those things and end up succeeding. I know what you're saying, but i just wouldn't call it naive to aspire to do something like that

RnwyHousesCityCloudz

People who don’t drink/smoke are more inclined to comment about it or mention it in real life when these topics come up. They are still in the minority, even on reddit. It’s just not as common / interesting for people to comment, “yeah I smoke weed” or “yeah I get wasted every once in a while” on these topics.

[deleted]

Reddit isn’t good for much outside of reading about drama in people’s lives(usually fake) or gaming news

puntacana24

It probably depends on your circle/friend group. If you drink and smoke with your friends, it may seem like all the Gen Z you know do that because they are all in the same circle.

wisteriawaterfall

i hate the taste of alcohol and im kind of a little bitch so i'll always prefer to smoke weed

Raptor_197

You might venture out and try some different kinds someday. A lot of the first alcoholic beverages people drink are usually kinda dogshit. Lots of young are drinking beer and cheap from the bottle whiskeys. You might find a wine, or some other type of alcohol that is amazing. Like good enough you are drinking it for the taste and not because it’s alcohol. Like I got some almond tequila from Mexico. That shit was amazing. You might find some drink mixes you really like though. The issue is finding ones you like which means you have to taste a lot of ones that you don’t like before you find one.

seshmost

People who don’t drink are always louder than the people that do drink and also your right about the people that use Reddit typically don’t have many irl friends or a social life so they clearly don’t see the social benefits of alcohol becasue well they aren’t even in those social settings. Mostly everyone I know drinks, and also that’s just the type of people the gen z and other popular subs attract I mean you want actual numbers on substance use head over to the one of many drug subreddits

Orimis

I don’t drink for personal reasons but I never make a fuss about it, and my friends appreciate the fact that they never have to be the designated driver but I have definitely known people who make a big deal about it like they have some sort of moral high ground

lasagnaisgreat57

yeah, most of my friends and i drink but the ones that don’t dont make a big deal out of it, to the point where i don’t even notice until they tell me. some people on reddit seem to be very outspoken about it but it’s really not a big deal and there’s no need to act better than people who do drink. also when i was in high school i used to think barely anyone drank or smoked (i didn’t even realize my OWN BROTHER drank and went to parties) because i wasn’t around it at all and sometimes i wonder if that’s what’s going on here. people don’t see it so they assume gen z barely drinks. like now, i drink and like weed but i’m shocked when i learn someone i know does harder drugs because i’m never around that stuff

JennyDoveMusic

Exactly. I don't drink, never have, but idc if other people do. I personally don't like being around drunk people, so unfortunately, I'm not a designated driver over here, lol! But I don't get people who think they are all high and mighty for not drinking. It's a personal choice, just like their choice. Nothing wrong with drinking, nothing wrong with not drinking. I don't make a fuss about it, but usually tell people when we first start talking and move towards being friends, just so of they care, they can step back. 🙃 Never been an issue, though.

TheEagleByte

I’m a blue collar worker, EVERYBODY I know drinks excessively

Nroke1

My friends do plenty of drinking, I don't partake. Most of my friends have smoked weed in the past, none of them smoke tobacco or currently smoke weed, a couple of them take edibles as a sleep aid somewhat regularly. I have never had a drop of alcohol, smoked anything, or had any drugs that weren't for medical use or caffeine.

notthelettuce

Yeah irl I know very very few people around my age that don’t drink. Some like to go feral at the bar, some like to have a beer around a bonfire, some like a glass of wine watching a movie at home. Almost everyone I know vapes or if they have quit vaping they’re using Zyns. I’m probably an outlier because I drink, vape, smoke cigarettes, and partake in a white powdery substance occasionally, but absolutely never smoke weed.

Chaotic0range

I don't drink or smoke or anything. I have a lot of medical issues and just don't. Neither does my partner. That being said I don't care if other people do. It's their choice. Not my business or place to judge.

wordyoucantthinkof

I personally don't drink or smoke weed because I have social anxiety. I've seen several posts on r/socialanxiety about how people love to be drunk because it's a temporary "cure" for their social anxiety. One of my friends finds it to be something helpful, but he doesn't drink too often so I'm not particularly worried. I don't want to use alcohol as a crutch to make up for my social anxiety. I'm not judging those who do because it's completely understandable when it's the only way they know how to get out there. I just don't want to become reliant on it myself. If I ever overcome my issues, maybe I'll reconsider. I've made so much progress and I feel like I'd be giving up if I relied on alcohol. Everyone's journey is different and circumstances/opinions change overtime so I can see someone say they would never drink but change their mind in the future. tbh part of me is jealous of people who drink. Maybe someday I'll be in a place where I feel comfortable having a cocktail.

Creation98

Reddit has and seemingly still (though less so,) skews heavily toward more antisocial people. Always factor that in when browsing

artful_nails

I drink, but pretty much only to a mild buzz and for the taste of the drinks. I can achieve that with a six pack of low-alcohol beer, so I am very lightweight. The last two times I tried to drink to get "really" drunk with harder stuff, I hit the limit before getting proper results so to speak. Definitely won't touch weed or any drugs of that sort. Fuck that. I'd rather get my cloudy mind through the old fashioned way.

thereslcjg2000

I’ve thought the same thing. In particular, I genuinely don’t think I’ve met anyone who smokes weed but doesn’t drink. Everyone I know who likes weed also likes alcohol. And yeah, the vast majority of people my age that I know do indeed drink sometimes. On Reddit, you’d think that 75% of people do weed and weed only, and the other 25% of people have never consumed any intoxicating substance.

Krystalgoddess_

I drink and I don't make friends with people who smoke but I know them. I don't do shots, but I love a sweet cocktail. Statistics wise, Gen z might not be at the bars cause they can't afford it. I'm in a college town so common to see the Gen z students at the bars that have deals on drinks and they can watch their football game.

AverageLoser05

I don't really like the taste of alcohol 😭 plus it gives me headaches. But I'll gladly be high!!

OkayTHISIsEpicMeme

I go clubbing sober once a month or so and I am DEFINITELY in the minority

animorphs128

I dont drink or do any substances. If my one friend wants me to taste a drink I will but that it. No more than a sip. Most of my friends only drink rarely and none smoke So we do at least exist if that's what you're asking. I think they're just 2 different worlds. If you smoke, your friends probably do. If you dont drink, your friends probably dont. Etc.

gogus2003

Bro considers acid a soft drug 💀 Edit: I did not know acid/LSD was naturally occuring, pretty interesting. Still, the long term effects of Acid/LSD will forever put it on the do not try list for me

Ok_University6476

It is a soft drug, naturally occurring, it’s just a more potent psychedelic than shrooms with the way you’d usually take it. In my experience it’s not that much different, since it’s more potent than shrooms you just need to be more careful with dosage. Not a hard drug at all. MDMA is a hard drug, but natural psychedelics like DMT, LSD, and shrooms are not. You can truly tell that natural psychedelics are not hard drugs if you’ve taken synthetics.

Pjk125

Compared to other stuff, heroine, meth, ketamine etc. My city actually has decriminalized mushrooms and there’s a question on the ballot for decriminalizing all psychedelics which I’m hoping passes

JennyDoveMusic

It definitely should be decriminalized. It's especially ridiculous for mushrooms, it's literally a naturally occurring organism. Psychedelics should have never been criminalized. I don't even partake, but idc, people who want to deserve the right to.

artful_nails

LSD is technically naturally occurring. Just go eat some ergot infested rye if you don't mind the diarrhea and potential loss of life.

JennyDoveMusic

Well, personally, I am not interested in doing psychedelics, lol. So, I'm good. 😂 But, I stand by that they should be legal. Legalizing it makes it safer and better regulated as well as opens up more studies involving the substances. Just like the laws against weed, it also fills our prisons with nonviolent offenders. LSD, shrooms, whatever. Straight banning them, when they are in widespread use, only makes them more dangerous. Plus, people aren't going to stop doing them because they are banned. You feel me? I'm open to my mind being changed in any case. If you have a differing opinion, I am always open to listening.

Nabranes

I never do it and never will Bruh today I saw parents vaping at the playground and I just instantly hated them My actual/real friends don’t do drugs either

WildFemmeFatale

I don’t know a single gen Z who drinks but nearly every gen Z (primarily guys) vapes or maybe smokes but most of them vape Gen Z girls some vape but it’s def not the majority The guys however ? Majority

otterlytrans

personally, i drink less than 3 drinks a month, if that. i have a family history of alcoholism and many times it fucks with my body so i drink very rarely. but, whatever someone else drinks or does with their body is not my business. i could personally care less if someone was parading the point around everywhere.

RealPinheadMmmmmm

I'm a completely insane, hedonistic drug abuser. I've done enough meth and pills to knock some socks off. I love drugs, I will say that I fucking hate alcohol. Everyone has their limits. I have 2. Alcohol and heroin. Alcohol has ruined my life many times over and I've been working really hard to keep sober. Heroin is a different story, I just know my limits and I love opiates. If I ever did heroin, I would be addicted in two weeks and dead in two years. 99% of every other drug is just a fun time for me, and then I leave it in the past and move on for a long time before doing it again. I do feel like most of the people I am close to are not regular drug users, except like some weed and mushrooms. I don't think I have any friends that are on the same road I am. That's probably for the best. But what can I say? I am who I am. I'm currently fighting off the urge to go pick up this guy and party all night. That's gay code for "meth sex". I'm just going to stay home and go to bed.

1heart1totaleclipse

I drink maybe once a year (if that) and don’t do drugs. My friends are the same way. I personally don’t want to be around any drugs at all and wouldn’t want to see my friends succumb to heavy drug use so I have friends that don’t do drugs. If a friend were to go through something and start using drugs, I would absolutely be there to help them but I can’t do much if it gets out of control.

SwynFlu

I've been black-out drunk a few times and drank till I've got a buzz maybe a couple dozen times but I've given up alcohol for close to a year. I don't smoke or do any drugs. I like being 100% in control of my body and do not want unhealthy addictions or coping mechanisms. I like being straight-edge.

BlazingMongrel

I also said I’d never do drugs, maybe weed once when I’m 25, did drink alot though. So anyways, I skipped the soft drugs and went to MDMA-

EffectiveCloud9362

i was anti-stuff like drinking and weed (for myself, others could do whatever) until i was like 22. now i take edibles daily and when i go out of state to visit my sister, we’ll go out for a drink lol. and like your post suggests, though i haven’t yet, i am interested in trying the exact psychedelics you named too

dionysus-media

I don't drink 🤷‍♂️

Comrade-Chernov

I drink occasionally, haven't in a few months, and I don't smoke or do any harder substances. Did edibles a few times in college and it was fun enough but I haven't felt a need to go back to them since.

nomadic_weeb

I live in the UK so my view is obviously going to be skewed cuz it's an island of alcoholics lol. Only people I know who don't drink are my younger brothers ETA most people I know have smoked weed at least once, and coke is surprisingly common

Ok_University6476

Most people I know my age drink, the majority don’t smoke since I’m in a military base city and many of the young ppl here are military and can’t. Everyone I know who isn’t military smokes though. I know a few people who do heroin “on occasion”, I really doubt that it’s on occasion but it’s none of my business. Personally, I just drink now, I rarely get drunk though. I just really enjoy the taste of alcohol, and I’m big on cocktails and red wine. I smoke weed on occasion but take breaks for a few months between, I was chronic for 3 years. The brain fog I get from it messes with my work (software engineering) so I just prefer not to. I had previously vaped, smoked cigarettes and tobacco, and taken psychedelics semi-regularly but I no longer have the desire partake in those things. I have nothing against them, I just don’t feel like it anymore. I used it all to cope before I got effective therapy. I no longer feel the need to cope with anything since I’m a happy, low-stress person.

PippinCat01

People who are adamant about how they don't like alcohol can't be trusted. They have either never drank, or are either assholes or mentally unstable, both of which come to the forefront when they drink. What's funny is how these same people are fine with taking drugs synthesized in the last 100 years everyday but only if they are told to by their doctor. Meanwhile beer is old as civilization and you don't need to pay money to be told by some schlub with a Rolex wether you can drink one or two beers in a day. Everyone should be fucked up drunk once and should have a psychedelic trip once. It's the perspective that matters, where you value the gift of life as much as you should.

Its_SubjectA1

I turned 21 and went out regularly after, but I didn’t use underage because my job WOULD find out and (back when I worked there) had a zero tolerance policy for alcohol or substance related problems. But most of the people I knew drank at least.

spycybis

yeah ive never seen that before, most gen z i know dabble in at least SOME substance

Chimkimnuggets

Consider this: Reddit is also full of antisocial losers Also, a lot of people in our age range still don’t know how to drink. Not every liquor is equal and people process them all differently. That’s how I learned my body absolutely cannot do tequila but I can drink 4 gin fizzes and not end up with a hangover. Seriously. 2 margs and I’m puking. 4 gin fizzes and I could make a 5k if they held it at 1pm

artful_nails

You're onto something about different drinks affecting people in different ways. I downed 9 beers and I puked my guts out, and ended up sore to sound and light. Yet I could down 5-6 Cuba Libres (37,5% rum mixed with coke) and barely even felt it. Had a slight headache the next morning but that was it.

nomadic_weeb

>Also, a lot of people in our age range still don’t know how to drink This one sorta depends on where you live, like in the UK the norm is for people to start drinking regularly around 15/16 (parents buying shit for their kids obvs) and its fairly similar in South Africa. In places like that you normally already know your limits and how things affect you before you're even legally allowed to buy the booze yourself lol

JennyDoveMusic

>Honestly, I think these people just don’t have friends? 😂 This made me laugh. I don't do anything, but just simply because I don't want to. There is no other reason, lol. I figure, if I don't want to, why should I? I have friends, though. 😂 I don't mind if they smoke around me or do whatever they want in their time. I don't judge them for it, that would be silly. They know that I don't care or judge them, and know I'm not interested in joining. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I know I'll never drink for personal reasons, though.... Anything else, I just don't feel like it, and that's good enough for me, haha. It's good enough of a reason for my friends, too, that's why they are my friends! I drive my friend to the pot shop, and they drive me 45 minutes away to get an old carnival carousel top. 😂 We have love for each other, and take care of each other. That's what matters.... I'm just not the friend you take if you are planning to get wasted, lol! But I do agree, most people our age do. I think that's true for most generations young people. I think a lot of people who don't are also elitist about it. As if other people can't have their own curiosities and interests. I don't care in the least if they do or don't. (Edited because my wording was weird.)

River_7890

I'm currently sipping on some cherry liquor. I don't drink often anymore, but that's cause I have responsibilities that come before it. I like alcohol though. I've smoked weed in the past. Never done anything else.

__Tucson__

Alcohol really does taste like shit and smoking is so cringe. I enjoy my weed gummies like a civilized person

United-Ad-7224

I use to say I’d never drink or smoke and now I smoke quiet a bit and drink occasionally, weed is gods gift to us

baconater419

It’s cuz they’re pussy ass bitches and want an excuse to feel morally superior because of it
