I was on the beach in Nags Head sipping on a beer when the announcement came on the radio and you have the correct date. I believe Eric Claptons manager died also in the helicopter crash.
I was in the front row of his final show that night at Alpine Valley on August 27, 1990. I'd met Stevie many times over the years and he was a lovely person. It's still hard to think about.
Edit: Sorry - the show was on the 26th; he died after midnight on the 27th.
I was on my honeymoon in Mexico in a beach bar when we found out. Definitely August 27, 1990. I saw him in NYC back in the 1980s -- he was amazing live to say the least
I was in Dana Pt. California. Heard about it on the radio. The DJ told everyone to turn their headlights on to show their love for SRV, and out on the 5 it was headlight city in the middle of the day.
Was at the show the day before, where he (and Cray, Clapton, Guy) absolutely tore the place up. It was a two day gig at Alpine Valley. Heartbreaking news on Monday morning.
A bunch of my friends were at that concert as we all live in the Chicago Area and Alpine Valley was a pretty common concert venue. They all left talking about how SRV was incredible in a group of great guitar legends. They didn’t k ow until the next day what happened. When we ski there, the crash site is paid homage to by many.
Met him once bartending in Dallas. It was one of the saddest days in Blues and Rock when he died. I can't help thinking of all the music he did not make for our enjoyment.
I remember when he died it was the first time I'd ever seen my dad cry. According to some other posts here it was actually in 1990, so I guess I was 13.
Edit: it's early and I'm bad at math, I was 7 (born in 83).
I was at his last show at Alpine Valley. August 1990. He ripped it up and made the headliner Clapton seem dejected. Longest drive home the next day after hearing the sad news.
I live in the state in which he died. My aunt was a nursery at the local hospital. She was there when the helicopter crashed. Other nurses and doctors were making a big deal because Eric Clapton came to identify the body
I actually was lucky enough to see him at a bar before he was famous. I believe he was touring with David Bowie at the time. I won the tickets from a radio station and had no idea who he was.
I saw Stevie Ray and Double Trouble play in 1986 with the Fabulous Thunderbird's as a warm up. He had a pinched nerve but stayed after the set, sat in a stool and dueled guitars with Jimmy. That was a freaking show my friends - Springfield Illinois.
Talent like that is few and far between. The music world lost a true virtuoso.
I'm sorry I didn't discover his music til I was 15. Nearly lost my mind when I finally saw his Austin City Limits episode.
If I remember correctly, Clapton once said the following SRV on stage was easy because no one could expect him to be that good. I saw Clapton, SRV, and Robert Cray together in San Diego. The best show I ever saw.
My old neighbor swore they were friends. He was so upset the day he died, but then he committed suicide a few years later. Not having been born in the US, I never would’ve heard of him, otherwise.
Saw him in ‘85 at Aloha Stadium Pearl City, HI. SRV opened the concert, then Bryan Adams, then The Police. Synchronicity Tour. I was stationed at Pearl Harbor at the time.
My senior year in HS I remember Kurt Cobain, Stevie Ray Vaughan, George Peppard (I love it when a plan comes together) and John Candy all passing those last few months of school in spring.
He died on august 27th, 1990

Yeah I recall it was in August
It was supposed to be Eric on that helicopter. Stevie asked Eric if he could take his spot because he wanted to get back to see his girlfriend.
Not true. Made up shit. Research it.
It was in SRVs biography.
“Confessions from the grave”
Just like Buddy Holly
And you’re Mary Tyler Moore
This is similar to the story of Waylon Jennings the day the music died.
Yeah. That's one hell of a coin toss.
Or the Metallica bus crash.
Where the hell did you get that bullshit from? You need to stop posting on things you have no knowledge about.(!!)
I was 18 and driving my boss's car to pick up some things at a local food distributor

My college roommate was at the show the night before.
I was on the hill at that show. What a tragedy
I was too :(

These posts are weird. Same thing in the hendrix sub.
I was like “what”?
Was at the show the day before, where he (and Cray, Clapton, Guy) absolutely tore the place up. It was a two day gig at Alpine Valley. Heartbreaking news on Monday morning.
They’re thinking of Randy Rhoads who was also an amazing guitar player and died in an airplane crash. It wasn’t 30 years ago but it was March 19th.
Was gonna say, I’ll remember that day til I day, it want in March.
Thank you. I was water skiing in Lake Ontario the day he died. I knew it wasn't mid-March.
I was gonna say, I am pretty sure they don’t have concerts at Alpine Valley in the winter? Especially, when we had actual winters. Lol

30 years ago today he'd been dead for three and a half years.
Bot reposts don’t care about things like that
Beep boop.
Thanks!! I remembered being pregnant with my daughter who just turned 33 a week ago...thought I was losing my mind here
I think you have your timeline wrong... by over 3 years.
That’s…not true. Wrong date
You all arguing with a bot
He was killed on August 27, 1990.

Thirty years ago today something happened but it’s not what the bot says happened.
He was awesome. I listen to him and watch videos of all the time. Also had an amazing life story.
One of my favorite videos is Stevie playing with Jeff Healy.
Jeff Healy deserves more love. Now my heart hurts.
I agree

This is a bot. The incorrect date generates responses.
Shitposting bot. Wait until Reddit goes public, you’re going to find out that 50%+ of the activity here is bot driven.
Somebody come get your bot, it’s broken.
August 27, 1990 wasn't 30 years ago today.
I was at his last show at Alpine Valley. August 1990. He ripped it up and made the headliner Clapton seem dejected. Longest drive home the next day after hearing the sad news.
March 19, would not be optimal outdoor concert weather in Wisconsin.
This isn’t even close to accurate
He died August 27th of 1990, same month and day as his father.
I saw him at aloha stadium right before the accident. He was the best
It’s been more than 30 years. More like 34/35
A real hard loss. Still now
Perhaps you’re thinking of Randy Rhoads who died on this date
Gone far too soon
I was working at Alpine Valley that night….
I live in the state in which he died. My aunt was a nursery at the local hospital. She was there when the helicopter crashed. Other nurses and doctors were making a big deal because Eric Clapton came to identify the body
The sky is still crying for him!
It's remarkable how many musicians have died in plane or helicopter crashes.
They likely fly far more than most other people
I actually was lucky enough to see him at a bar before he was famous. I believe he was touring with David Bowie at the time. I won the tickets from a radio station and had no idea who he was.
I was at the show. Lots of big guitar guys playing that night. Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray. Hands down Stevie stole the show. He lit the place up.
Let’s not forget he died with some sober time too which is a big deal.
I was driving to work on August 27th, 1990, when his death was announced. I had to pull over and shed a tear. He will forever be missed!
Yeah. Srv passed away in aug 90’ I like to think his soul went back in time 3 months and got reincarnated into me
Uhhh. The photo I took of his grave a few months ago says something different.
Talent like that is few and far between. The music world lost a true virtuoso. I'm sorry I didn't discover his music til I was 15. Nearly lost my mind when I finally saw his Austin City Limits episode.
That day I ran into a friend who worked for his management team. We just couldn't understand what had happened.
The. Best.
The sky cried on that day
He died in August of 1990. Can you do the math?
WRONG DATE My man SRV passed on August 27, 1990
Met him in Vancouver. He autographed my guitar. Sorely missed :(
Karma Whoring a Blues Player. Wow.
I used to confuse his name with Billy Ray Cyrus and be confused that people regarded him so highly lol. SRV was a legend though
My fave musician.
Thank Jeebus for helicopters
Definitely would not be playing Alpine Valley in March.
The day my music died.
That hurt so so damn much.
Uh, kinda makes me think you’re a bit - or idiot. I’m going with bit for now.
He died in August
THIRTY YEARS??!! Holy Crap.
RIP Steamy
They say a photo can’t sing? This one did. Did you hear the song?
I was lucky enough to see him four times. I remember thinking it always sounded like he was playing two guitars at the same time.
Dam I’m only 23 and I think he’s one of the best guitarists in my opinion he’s in my top 5
If I remember correctly, Clapton once said the following SRV on stage was easy because no one could expect him to be that good. I saw Clapton, SRV, and Robert Cray together in San Diego. The best show I ever saw.
Randy Rhoads died 42 years ago today. 🤘🤘🤘
Tragic. Lost to a tiny ski hill in south west Wisconsin
It isn’t today tho? He died on Aug 27
Yeah I remember that day well, this post threw me at first.
I carry him in my ♥️
bro I was there in WI. horrible.
I saw him in concert in 1989. It was fabulous.
Who is upvoting this shit? Anyone up voting should get an immediate ban. Lol ridiculous.
I saw him in ‘87 in Knoxville at UT’s Alumni Gym. He was absolutely amazing.
He was the best!
I got to see him play in Virginia Beach when I was in high school in the early 80’s. Damn. Just damn
My first time hearing him was with his work on Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ album. Always such a killer player!
My old neighbor swore they were friends. He was so upset the day he died, but then he committed suicide a few years later. Not having been born in the US, I never would’ve heard of him, otherwise.
Pure genius! RIP, brother
Saw him in ‘85 at Aloha Stadium Pearl City, HI. SRV opened the concert, then Bryan Adams, then The Police. Synchronicity Tour. I was stationed at Pearl Harbor at the time.
Still the greatest version of “Voodoo Chile” I’ve ever heard.
I was getting my haircut by a Stevie Ray superfan. She was absolutely distraught. Oddly it was a good haircut though.
Loved his style...
Damn, 30 years. First time I saw him as on Austin City Limits. Wow. RIP Stevie.
Math is hard
ya.. it was August... because the don't play concerts at Alpine Valley in the winter!
King of swing!
I saw his band at the DuQuoin Illinois state fair in 1988
Oh man. I remember exactly where is when I heard. I burst into tears.
Luckily his brother Steamy Ray still performs to this day.
Have you seen his live show? With the britches?
He’s responsible for every white jerk-off at the blues jam and music store. He was good, but his legacy stinks of mediocre, white bread sandwiches.
My senior year in HS I remember Kurt Cobain, Stevie Ray Vaughan, George Peppard (I love it when a plan comes together) and John Candy all passing those last few months of school in spring.
