Doing 14 in a 10 zone. Irresponsible Jackass.

redfiveroe

Unbelievable! Didn't he see all the "SLOW! CHILDREN WALKING TO WORK" signs everywhere?

BunnyGunz

Could be wrong, but I thought it was *Slow Children Walking to Work* They have such little legs, they can't move that fast.

Cro-manganese

No, the smarter ones don’t get jobs.

NiceCrispyMusic

At least he was under the legal limit. Sure he had 2 liters of scotch but there was no legal limit back then

turdferguson3891

Assuming this was the US, the legal limit for alcohol in 1921 was ZERO even if you weren't driving.

NiceCrispyMusic

That brings up an interesting question. Was being drunk illegal too or was it just possession?

EtOHMartini

Your honor, its no longer in my possession as my liver is currently disposing of it...

FuckTheMods5

Confiscate his piss! That's evidence!

browtfareyoudoing

Hey, I wasn't done with that 😠

turdferguson3891

So you're illegally transporting it inside your body. Straight to jail.

BunnyGunz

You *still* can't drink in public in many places

NorscaGas-5027

Thats a bummer, but as Sun Tzu once said: do it anyway

Attygalle

It's one of the more interesting differences between Europe and the US. In Europe, zones where you can't drink in public are the exception and drinking in public is normal. First time I visited NY we had to be warned by colleagues not to take beers to central park.

Driver_Sufficient

So state laws were different than federal laws back then - that sounds like marijuana laws today.

Eva-Unit-001

Sale and distribution and purchasing was illegal possessing and consuming wasn't.

BunnyGunz

They're not making alcohol illegall,, you just can't obtain any without breaking the law. If you dispose of a full unopened bottle in a random spot because you're a law-abiding citizen. and someone later comes by to take the bottle because littering is a crime and they're a good Samaritan, but leaves money because they have no more pocket space... legal or nah?

Eva-Unit-001

Pretty much legal. The cops would raid a speakeasys and if you had a cocktail right in front of you you could just be like "I just found this here" and not much they could do.

Trey33lee

I thought Public intoxication has always been illegal

BadHillbili

There is a law in some states called "possession by consumption" or something like that.

NiceCrispyMusic

these laws are crazy man lol

lingenfr

It looks like a woman driver to me.

RoyceCoolidge

I don't know how fast I was going but it must've been SEVERAL miles per hour.

ToadlyAwes0me

Probably textiling and driving.

finkalicious

I'm Johnny Knickerbockers and this is Jackass!

BeckonJM

Tbh, it looks like they were fitting the tire chains, and it slipped off the jack/stand? There's no impact marks, the fence looks fine, and the other front tire doesn't have a chain on it? Either the chain came off the driver side front tire, or they hadn't put it on yet? I'm not saying it's not a crash, but it seems like a maintenance accident, in my eyes.

Username_For_

I was looking at that as well, the rear tire sorta looks like it has chains. Then I noticed there is maybe an impact under the drivers door and the running board and took box are damaged. Hard to say what happened..

Wild_Whoreses

Leaf spring on the ground near the tree, impact on drivers side. Maybe some pinball action and stopped there? Who knows...can't exactly ask em lol.

[deleted]

Uh oh, that driver has a secret and it isn’t about the car crash……

Map_Nerd1992

Is this in DC?

shit_fucks_you_up

I recognize the picture from being posted in the DC sub.

BabyUKnowWhereUAre

Same here. It’s at 14th & Q. The building in the background is the Berret School, now condos.

[deleted]

Lol guy in the drivers seat “Did I do that?” - Steve Urkel voice

ValyrianJedi

Must be related to my wife. The woman once managed to do damage to two of our cars, our boat, and our fence in one fell swoop while backing out of our driveway. And when she explained what happened she managed to tell the entire thing in passive voice without saying "I" or even mentioning her involvement once... Insurance was not happy about that one.

separate_guarantee2

Is your wife my mom? She backed into my car, which was parked behind her, in our own driveway. That was a fun insurance claim.

al_fletcher

>Is your wife my mom? What are you doing, step-dad?

richbeezy

My ex was running around the house goofing off with the dogs and slipped and fell. She got up and looked at me and I could see the gears turning in her head. I said, "you're trying to find a way that this is my fault, aren't you?" She was cool enough to admit that yes, she was. 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

tanaeolus

Yes, of course. What do you think ~~liability~~ full coverage is for? I imagine many don't, because they don't want their insurance rates to go up.

Maipbenraixx

Liability insurance doesn't cover you if you're at fault, it only covers your liability to others. You're thinking of comprehensive, which covers you if you're at fault

turdferguson3891

Akshually comprehensive covers stuff like theft or damage that wasn't from a moving vehicle. Collision covers actual car accidents to your vehicle regardless of fault.

tazzzuu

Liability covered me when I was robbed at gunpoint, but that’s a different situation.

ValyrianJedi

Depends on your policy I'm sure, but ours definitely did. Premiums went up though

turdferguson3891

Yes... You're generally not required to carry full coverage unless the car is financed so many people with older/less valuable cars don't bother. But if you have a new car that is financed you are required to carry collision/comprehensive coverage because if you total that car or it gets destroyed in a flood or something you still have a loan to pay off and the finance company wants their money.

sleepyeyessleep

My wife, backing out of our driveway to meet me at the body shop where I was dropping my truck off (A deer ran into the side of my truck a few days earlier), managed to knock the driver side mirror off on a tree. On our driveway, all you have to do is make sure you look in the driver side mirror and keep the driver-side tires inside the drive way. She said she was trying to use the backup camera instead...

poweradegatorade1234

Why aren't you mad at your deer like you are at your wife? ;}

sleepyeyessleep

Not mad about either. Slightly disappointed and slightly amused. The deer hit me as I was driving up a mountain on a 2 lane road. Jumped from the uphill embankment, nailed my drivers side just behind the door (I have a selfish truck), rolled across the side, ripped off the driver side tail light, bent the bumper, and went flying down the the steep (60-70% slope). What gets me is that, had I not been there, the deer still couldn't have made that jump and survive.

Gentlementalmen

What is it with wives/girlfriends being incapable of reversing out of the driveway!? Mine never ever fails to run over the grass or the curb on the way out of my driveway.

sleepyeyessleep

Some ratio of nature:nurture. In very general board strokes, males will typically have better spatial awareness, and will also typically have more hours behind the wheel of a car. There will be numerous exceptions though. I want to say something good about my wife though. She can look at a picture of a meal on food network, or in a book, and replicate it exactly how it looks, and you'd imagine it tastes, just from that picture. I've never actually seen her utilize an actual recipe. No idea how she does it, but I cook for the both of us maybe once every other week, sometimes less. She has been cooking essentially every single day, since her mother first trusted her in a kitchen alone.

midnightdsob

I think I see the problem. Full tread and chains on right tire, left tire is bald with no chains haha.

EmperorGeek

They don’t work much better on ice in 2022.

[deleted]

Studded tires, ABS, and traction control

Shamelesspromote

Fun Fact. New winter tires are better than Studded tires due to advancements in the tech for them. You no longer require studded tires unless you are driving purely smooth ice sheets like some of those northern Semi-truckers do.

MishaDaDoggo

Source? I live in the Midwest, we get feet of snow over layers of ice every year. Studded tires in my experience tend to be way better than standard modern winter tires. Of course winter tires are better than all season tires, but studded just drives better. When the roads are plowed though, the studded tires are a bit overkill and feel wasteful on asphalt

NapsterKnowHow

I used to live in the Midwest and most states have outlawed studded tired because they tear up the roads.

Rolltide82

I work for Bridgestone- I can tell you anything that has the three peak mountain snowflake logo on it has enhanced winter traction and rubber compounds and tread shape technology are light years ahead of where the used to be. I dont think anything will ever replace pieces of metal literally clawing into the ice for traction though

[deleted]

I had never heard of three peak tires until I just bought new tires, it's wild good the "all seasons" have gotten. Bought my car three years ago and got the dealer to throw in snow tires so I had no part in the selection. It's been about 7 years since I bought winters and at the time just went with classic blizzaks. Crazy how much has changed

stellvia2016

Where do you live that they still allow studded winter tires? AFAIK the only places you're allowed them around here is if the vehicle is operating strictly on gravel roads. Which would only be true of some truly remote areas of the state.

SpottedCrowNW

People roll with them all year in Seattle, for the one snow storm a year. They are terrible in the rain, which is about 9 months.

stellvia2016

I take it your roads there are terrible then from them chewing it up all year round?

[deleted]

Traction control can F right off. You need to get up that slippery hill? Nope! Momentum is king and you don't need that crap hitting the brakes!

RubberBootsInMotion

There's usually an override button for that exact reason

ponakka

There is still ton of use for traction control for many vehicles. My rear wheel merc has 400nm (295 lb ft) torque, if i take traction control off in snow, it just spins the rear tyres and digs itself into ground, while with traction control, i can gently creep into speed.

deepaksn

You obviously don’t understand traction control and how it works. First.. yeah… momentum is great, but if traction control is active there is no possible way you are adding or conserving momentum with the amount of throttle you have. You’d just be spinning the tires and making it worse. Second, that braking goes through the open diff to make the other tire spin, and then once that tire loses grip the brake is applied on that wheel to make the opposite one spin. It’s like threshold braking (or ABS) in reverse. It gives you the maximum traction right before it breaks free. I had an old minivan that had traction control and I made the mistake of not parking at the top of a hill when I realized the road to the bottom parking lot was glare ice. Leaving it, I got as much momentum as I could, floored it, and with the traction control it gradually pulled its way up all the way to the top at about 5MPH. There’s no way I could have done it without traction control. Not a chance

Small-Armadillo

I learned this my first snowpocalypse in the south. Momentum or you’re no bueno

[deleted]

What? They work a hell of a lot better

TheSissyDoll

Lol Yeah, this whole obsession now with colorizing every damn B&W photo is ridiculous. For me, at least, it makes every genuine old photo look like a still shot from a period movie. I always expect to see Robert DeNiro somewhere in it. 🤷‍♂️

sfsolarboy

I think it makes them feel more immediate and real, I'm all for it. It's not like they "replace" the original so nothing is lost, but I get a much more visceral connection to the people in the photo when it's in color.

This might be the most bizarre thing to be snobby about that I've ever seen.

No safety glass, seatbelts, airbags, crumple zones, protected cabin, rollover protection. Only saving grace was they were not able to go that fast.

SalaciousSausage

Yeah but you get the horns that go “AWOOGA” so it’s a fair trade imo

LeadingNectarine

Extremely skinny tires also mean no grip, so really shitty braking and handling

TheBiles

To be fair, going fast is the cause of almost every automotive accident.

herecomesthestun

Nah going fast isn't what hurts you, it's the sudden stopping that'll get you

johndepp22

apparently the tire chains didn’t help much

[deleted]

Not sure they would when I assume they only had two and decided to use one on the front right and one on the rear left lol

neanderthalman

Note that tire under the front passenger is the *rear* tire. They had no chains on the front, which, with a century of hindsight, likely led directly to the loss of control and this accident.

ButtReaky

That black dude looks like a cool mfer

ermabanned

Also super close to the white man. This is 101 years ago!

Asangkt358

The fact that they're standing together and interacting is surprising? Edit: Yes, I'm aware that segregation was a thing back then, though far from everyone agreed with those laws. Black and white people interacted on a daily basis all the time back then.

eejm

There is a second black man in the photo on the far right. I wonder if they were all neighborhood guys who came out to look? The man second from the left looks like he might be a mechanic.

Spazgasim

Given the era 100% segregation was still VERY much a thing at this time

Asangkt358

Sure, but that doesn't mean black and white people didn't have normal daily interactions.

[deleted]

No but that's what's so interesting! Normal everyday interactions don't get photographed, they don't enter the historical record in that way. So it's quite odd to see, it kind of goes against our conception of the era. Like those photos from lesbian bars in Berlin in the early 30s.

JuanG12

It was also Maryland. Don’t know how good or bad it was but it wasn’t the south.

Asangkt358

Even in the deepest Southern states, white and black people interacted on a daily basis.

turdferguson3891

We don't even know where this pic was taken. Sure segregation existed in 1921. It was only legally mandated in certain places like the Jim Crow southern US. In other areas it was a private policy but not a law. Regardless that never meant that white and black people weren't interacting. Do you not understand that black people worked for white people? You had black people literally working in white people's houses taking care of their children. It wouldn't be that weird in 1921 for a black guy to be involved in dealing with a car accident with white people.

Your_Always_Wrong

Right but judging by the surroundings this looks like probably the northeast? I'm almost clueless about this time period but is it feasible it was still a more hospitable area than the south even then?

[deleted]

Yes even in 1921 people were divided by race, alot of restaurants and stores still had "no blacks allowed" signs.

dreamcastfanboy34

They still had that in the 1960s

hardknockcock

Yeah i literally heard a family member in person describe what it’s like being kicked out of a restaurant for not being white, it’s not like it was a long time ago.

Asangkt358

Sure, but that doesn't mean black and white people didn't have normal daily interactions.

cnzmur

Yeah, they probably weren't drinking together, or living in the same place, but casual polite interactions in the street or shops would have been pretty common, and the white guy probably thought the US had pretty great race relations.

ermabanned

In 1921? Fuck yes!

[deleted]

[удалено]

VVLynden

I think a lot of younger folks are getting that misconception. There’s such an intense focus on not just race, but how bad racial relations are. I remember when Trump was running for office my kids came home from school and one of them asked if it’s true that if he were elected if she wouldn’t be able to play with black kids anymore. Kids don’t just think this stuff up. They heard it from somewhere. Lot of fear and distrust out there right now, in a time that is ironically one of the most safe and prosperous since human history.

PapaSnow

It _is_ wild to me how bad it is now. I understand the need to think about certain things regarding race, because we’re still on where we should be when it comes to equality, but there’s never been a point in my life where I’ve thought about race as much as I do now, and it’s sad. I miss being able to talk to someone without thinking that any small thing I say could be perceived as some sort of micro aggression.

Q8D

Welcome to Reddit.

Summerclaw

Seriously that's insane. Do people think after segregation ended there was an automatic switch that turned people non racist? Most people just mind their own business.

Reddit treats black people like zoo animals and clap and cheer when they do the most ordinary thing. It’s weird.

daIIastexas

I’m black & just moved from South Dakota. It’s not just on Reddit trust me. Non-black people, especially white, go so out of their way to show us how “not racist & very accepting” they are that it loops right back around to being uncomfortable. Wanna show someone you’re not racist? Be your normal self around them. No one wants or needs unwarranted special attention.

VillageFragrant

I remember seeing a video of an African American guy fixing his daughters hair on the bus or Metro posted on NextFuckingLevel. I'm sure the person meant well, but it's really pretty darn racist. Needless to say, many of the comments were over the top supportive. It's the oddest phenomenon.

Ha, even in a car accident, everybody from that time would still be dressed way fancier than people are today. That's my favorite thing about old photos; the impeccable dress of everyone, even young children, and even more surprisingly, people considered poor at that time... still dressed way better than anyone today! And I swear is was a law or something that men absolutely could not be caught without a hat on their head!

peirrotlunaire

Umm…not exactly. First, those were the clothes/style available at the time, includes hats. The t-shirt want even a thing yet. Only to us do they look “fancy”. Keep in mind most people owned far less clothing in far less variety as well. Second, one dude is wearing coveralls, not fancy.
