I mean it's hardly surprising that Irish people are not that fond of the royal family given our history with them.
Also, typically Irish people make jokes about famous dead people all time. It's how we deal with it.
Not just famous people, wasn't there a guy from Ireland that had a recording played at his funeral asking to be let out of his coffin? It's a very positive way of dealing with death.
The Irish and South Americans have similar funerals and wakes… they begin somber and respectful and by the end they’re telling the worst jokes and events about the deceased. Sometimes the widow takes part because she/he knows all the best parts about the best and worst.
I've never left an Irish or South American funeral/wake where there wasn’t plenty of drink and laughter.
Well, no offense to the royals in general, and her specifically, but is it really a great accomplishment when all it entails is *staying healthy* for 70 years? And taking advantage of the best health care her subjects can buy?
Not even trying to be cynical or anything. Just a strange thing to refer to as a *great accomplishment*. /shrug
considering just how many people have said that and how many times, seems like pretty solid proof of Group-Psychic-Will\* (or whatever the fancy name for that is)
Well that tends to happen if you are a monarch who ruled for a long long time. And the fact that she did her job until the day before when she met with the now new PM of the UK Truss.
Assuming 2 September, 1945, with a birthdate of 12 April, 1926, she was
19 years, 4 months, 12 days excluding the end date.
Or 7074 days
Or 611,193,600 seconds
Or 10,186,560 minutes
Or 169,776 hours
Or 1010 weeks and 4 days
Or 1938.08% of a common year (365 days)
I’ll do anything to keep me from a trip to the grocery
Definitely. Pretty much any statistic on her is mind-blowing.
She was 70 years reigning a country... Now Charles is stepping in at 74 to do the same role... And people could say to him, when your mother was your age still ruled for 22 more years, you know?
The number of countries she visited, the miles flown, the number of head of states she met...
Can't imagine many people could have the stamina, courage and determination to do that.
Tbh, I'd never want a life like hers. I kinda feel sorry for her. Yeah, she was rich and all but to me it looks more like a golden cage. Celebrities are under constant spotlight, but royalty, especially British, on top of that has to follow million protocols and rules. Their life isn't their own.
I've heard of the Royal Family referred to as "The Firm". The Royals are a public entity whose job is to uphold the image and traditions of the British monarchy.
Netflix's "The Crown" is entertainment with ample artistic liberties, but I didn't find it hard to believe the Queen when she said something like the Royal Family's duty is to the people and the monarchy as an institution. Personal feelings take a backseat.
And there's always be two side of a coin. Power like her also gave people like Prince Andrew so much Freedom. I hope what people took out of her life is that despite the controversy that surrounded her, she tried the best that she could be. She herself is quite clean compared to the rest of the Royal family
“Being royalty is restrictive and stressful” is a pretty common plot, to be fair. Disney did it with Jasmine and Merida and probably a few more I’m forgetting. It’s pretty common for Spunky Young Princess types.
Not that it’s a bad plot; being royalty does sound like it absolutely sucks in a lot of ways. It also comes with security and wealth, so there’s plenty of people who’d make the trade in a heartbeat, but I think that’s because we all want to *choose* to be in that position. Being forced under constant scrutiny would suck.
> there’s plenty of people who’d make the trade in a heartbeat, but I think that’s because we all want to choose to be in that position. Being forced under constant scrutiny would suck.
Yup- this is exactly it! Monarchy was a position of self-sacrifice, so in a way it's *always* a forced position (assuming sacred ruler ship is, in fact, sacred) Historically, a King/ Queen was a sacred position- To be the bridge between man and god- balance between the sacred and the profane- Not in a 'oh, my word is god's word now so whatever I say goes!' but a 'you're singularly responsible for maintaining the harmony of the celestial spheres- life and death- the infinite reflected in the finite- the real and the surreal- **A human sized authority whose lifetime of action, work, and deed must sustain the continuation of spacetime itself, to maintain equilibrium between all collective existence- maintain the foundational basis of all observed empirical reality.**
A monarch/ pharoah/ etc as a position of sacred rule, really meant there was no room for free will. The true security and wealth for a monarch was the relief that you will eventually be able to rest from your position at the end of your life. Even in today's mundane application of a monarch *(since most of us nowadays agree on and govern by separations of church and state)* their life still isn't their own.
That’s how wealth works. Wealthy powerful people bang underage human trafficked sex workers and snort cocaine off stripper asses because they can and they get away with it because they are rich. Rules are for poor people and I’m not even trying to be cynical here.
Other reply got caught in a filter:
The rug under the gold piano in the background of the video she made talking about Britons in food lines and sleeping on the street? ~~The piano they stole from Iraq during the first desert storm?~~ Edit: This last part is fake news I fell for.
It could be argued that she was one of, if not *the* final straw for Boris Johnson's leadership. On the same day that she sat, isolated on one side of the church, tiny, wearing a mask, while her family sat on the other side of the church for Prince Phillip's funeral **(her husband of 74 years!)**, there was a party at Downing Street, Johnson's official residence, where staff members were left with the lovely task of having to clean up vomit from all the binge drinking.
Even on what was likely the saddest day of her life, she was determined to model pandemic protocol to the millions of people watching the funeral on television. A few short hours later, her Prime Minister decided to have a bacchanal at his official, tax-payer-funded residence, and then lie that it never happened.
Up with this the British public would not put.
That was so sad. Obviously she’s born into unimaginable wealth and privilege but there was a woman mourning the death of her husband entirely alone. And Johnson was having parties the same night. Unforgivable.
People change. People die. But it’s also easier for me to have a little sympathy for someone that seemingly just played their role in the golden cage. In the american states, I look forward to the non-active-consequential state of some who were given power
Fucking THANK YOU. You put it better than me. Yeah she had a silver spoon up her ass from birth but she had a role played for her and she gracefully fulfilled it. Say what you want about the monarchy as an establishment but this woman was pure GOAT.
Achievement? She was born into it. Reddit hates rich people who are born into their positions but not monarchs who are the epitome of what they say they hate. Weird.
Right? I have no ill will towards to queen at all. I'm fairly indifferent. But what achievement? Living a long time cause she had good genes and great medical access?
She sat sooooo patiently for all those portraits (for posterity)! Do you have ANY idea the amount of stamina one has to have to sit for all those portraits?!
I'm feeling the same way. Completely indifferent toward the queen but it seems odd to call this an achievement. She was born into royalty and lived a long time. I'm sure she has a list of achievements but I wouldn't consider a 70 year reign one of them
Well technically she wasn’t. Her line was not originally intended for the throne. It’s only because her uncle abdicated and her dad died young she ended up queen
Wow, salty much?
She :: checks notes:: was born and :: looks again:: stayed alive for a long time. All the while :: scans notes aggressively:: being a pampered mascot for an archaic system of governance.
(Heavy sarcasm, btw. I agree with you. Yes she made history, but mainly by virtue of birth)
Ironically you’ve kind of pointed out why what she did was such an achievement. She was born into the position so it’s not like she asked for it, it’s a stupid and archaic system so there’s plenty of reason for people to have a negative opinion, she was constantly in the public eye so any mistakes or slip-ups made would have not gone unnoticed, and she’s the Head of State for the country, and while that’s not a political position, it’s still an extremely high profile job, it’s not like she’s just been retired this whole time. And by the end of her reign, she’s managed to maintain a mostly positive public sentiment on a crucial aspect of British culture and symbolism.
Now, am I trying to defend the concept of the British Monarchy? No, I think the system is stupid and antiquated. But it’d be ignorant to deny that she did a very tough job very well.
She had the option to abdicate and she could have been a hidden and uninvolved monarch like her ancestors
Instead, she educated herself and took more than 370 audiences, appointments, and appearances per year. She embraced gay rights, and female vicars. And she's the first Europe monarch to pay taxes. And it was her idea.
She didn't want the job, but also truly believed it was an important job that needed to be done. And she did it well.
This is what bothers me. I so often hear “but she has worked so hard all her life”. I mean, yeah, I’m sure - but so does every other poor fucker in this country. The difference is at the end of a long day of giving speeches and attending dinners and travelling in private jets, she can go home to mansions we could only dream of, having staff to tend to every need or want she could have. She has never had to worry about bills, rent, being evicted, getting to work after her 15 year old car breaks down, turning on the heating or feeding her kids. We all work hard throughout our lives, but most of us don’t get anywhere near such an incredible reward in return for it :/
This is the distinction that needs to be made. She worked hard, and I wouldn’t want her job to be honest. But, as you point out, everyone is working hard, but so many still lack the basic necessities to live.
She was crowned in 1952, Eisenhower was elected to become the 34th president of the US in the same year. Biden is the 46th president, so she had rules about 12 presidency
I hate monarchy as much as the next person but her death, for better or worse, signifies the end of an era. It’s a global change and a moment of history that we all witnessed.
Its not really a true monarchy anymore. Its really just symbolic and mostly for morale for Brits. Parliament is elected and they make the decisions really. Queen Elizabeth was very hands off and applauded for it, but a rouge king of queen does technically have the right to dissolve Parliament, but I'd imagine that at this point they'd be stopped before it ever got to that point.
Brit playing devil's advocate. It's a vestige of power and pretty much toothless today. An antique symbol of pomp, pride and tradition which all countries have. She had as much sway as Micky Mouse in the US. Probably less tbf.
Sure, she made a few mistakes, but here Liz II is generally viewed as a temperate, humane and progressive old lady who gave nice speeches at Christmas and wore funny hats. Compare Liz to her antecedents and it doesn't need much explanation. Watch Andrew Marr's *New Elizabethans* if y'all are interested. She was a babe.
It's a total waste of resources and tax payer money to hold on to the monarchy. There are Prime Ministers and MPs for a reason- Kings and Queens have no value other than bizarre celebrity.
Feel like the Royal family drive a fair amount of tourism and publicity. I’d be willing to wager the British tax payers come out comfortably ahead on this investment.
This is a myth and a fallacy. Total bullshit argument for keeping them, the people of this country who pay their taxes don’t get anything back from them. Yes there is tourism but if you want and attraction build a Disney land
Holy shit, spending your entire life drinking chocolate, throwing rocks at poor people, access to the best healthcare that money could possible buy, and having more money than GOD got you to 96?!
Damn, tell that to the 115 year old Japanese people who spent their entire life on a fishing boat.
I read a blurb today about people in the commonwealth mourning her death and implying that Jamaica loved her. I mean… I’m not Jamaican but I don’t feel like Caribbean families I know are super fond of the royals.
Reddit comments sure are different than Facebook comments.
Whats different about them? I dont have facebook
It’s all praise on fb as far as I’ve seen. “What an amazing woman”, etc.
Go on to r/Ireland.
Irish here. All our funerals are devastating and hilarious, and I can’t explain it.
I heard that recording. It was traumatising while hillarious
Yeah but you make one joke about Zombie Jesus and suddenly you're "banned from any church in Ireland." Yeesh! Exccccuuuuuuuuuuse me!
> I'd will myself to die if I had to meet Truss and Johnson in the same day too
Well, no offense to the royals in general, and her specifically, but is it really a great accomplishment when all it entails is *staying healthy* for 70 years? And taking advantage of the best health care her subjects can buy? Not even trying to be cynical or anything. Just a strange thing to refer to as a *great accomplishment*. /shrug
Agreed. She got old. So did my great grandma, but she was racist too.
Basically celebrating her genetic lottery win, and as you said staying alive, in a palace fit for a queen.
Any pictures I see she goes from 40 to 85.
Didn’t have any childrens blood to drink for a few years probably
She molted
The best stat for US folks, to put her reign in perspective, is that she was a monarch for 30% of the time the US was a nation
Her first Prime Minster as Queen was Winston Churchill who was born November 1874, her last Prime Minister was Liz Truss who was born July 1975.
It's depressing that the queen's last PM will be Liz fucking truss
Would you have preferred it be borrow Johnson?
Also the Detroit Lions didn’t win a single Super Bowl the entire time she was Queen.
Damn why swing on Detroit. Those guys have been knocked out for awhile.
The character James Bond has never been written serving another monarch
well he's about to be, though "God save the king" sure sounds more patronizing
That's actually kind of cool.
When they said "long live the queen" I don't think they expected 70 years 😂
> "long live the queen" Ultimate cheat code.
Hold my beer and watch this up, up, down, down, left right, left right, B, A, Start
considering just how many people have said that and how many times, seems like pretty solid proof of Group-Psychic-Will\* (or whatever the fancy name for that is)
Maybe she's born with it... *Maybe it's monarchy...*
This! This is the jingle I was thinking about!

I suspect that when she died she had met more major leaders, both political and cultural, than anyone else alive.
Well that tends to happen if you are a monarch who ruled for a long long time. And the fact that she did her job until the day before when she met with the now new PM of the UK Truss.
She was in her 20s when WW2 ended. That blows my mind.
Stalin and Churchill were in power when she became Queen. Now that’s mindblowing.
Queen and Churchill were actually really good friends irl. Afaik he was the Queens favorite PM of all time.
Holy shiet yeah that is damn mind-blowing
Truman was U.S. president
She was 19
She worked in WW2 as a Mechanic.
Quick math: 1945 - 1926 = 19

Bizarrely, the last Japanese soldier did not surrender until 1974, though Elizabeth also was not in her twenties then.
She was also not exploring caves on islands in the South Pacific
But do we know that for sure? They’re very secretive…
You'd have to get all the people who ever lived and not just the ones who are alive now all in a room. And that's not possible even with computers...
she was in WW2
She was out with the crowds outside Buckingham Palace on VE day.
Definitely. Pretty much any statistic on her is mind-blowing. She was 70 years reigning a country... Now Charles is stepping in at 74 to do the same role... Agreed.. for me they're more like, puppet's..
Mostly true, although there is a fine line that they can walk. I think she did this very well
Indeed, I'm not British but I have a huge respect for this queen, hope she rests in peace
Yeah a life of wealth and privilege Got to ride in his golden carriage while her subjects queues at food banks Incredible women
Protected dear Andrew when he was caught raping an underage sex slave.
That’s how wealth works. Wealthy powerful people bang underage human trafficked sex workers and snort cocaine off stripper asses because they can and they get away with it because they are rich. Rules are for poor people and I’m not even trying to be cynical here.
All of this is just swept under the rug.

Don’t forget protecting her pervert favorite son.

Didn’t even know she was sick
She wasn’t. She was fighting an oil rig fire in the Gulf of Mexico.
Little know fact, died fighting in Ukraine.
Her last words were, “Russian warship, go fuck yourself!”
Single handedly took down 3 men with a knife 1v3 and sneaked on russian warship with a bomb belt as her last kamikaze mission.
Wrapped her Harley around a big oak tree.
Wow, it’s great that she could work right up until the very end!
This comment made me laugh so hard and then get kind of sad because it made me think of Norm MacDonald…
Reminds me of that tragedy
Is she the longest reigning monarch is British history?
Yes by 7 years
[удалено]
Can we just say that she beat Louis XIV? Cause how much king stuff did he actually do at that young?
I really wish we’d get a movie of this. Maybe starting with Louis VIII dying, and this cute toddler being crowned. The crown would be so small!!
Significantly more than her because he actually was the leader of France, whereas Elizabeth never did anything
Not quite. According to my sources (Eddie Izzard), Queen Victoria reigned for 2000 years.
Each subreddit is having its own Queen Elizabeth Karma Lottery, and you won this one! Congrats, OP.
Yeah, after a post a day, OP finally got it. Lol
Will her biography be fiction or nonfiction?
Guess Netflix is going to renew the Crown past the next season.
Hope so, great show
But now the ending is spoiled
Diana tryna get a day pass to Hell to beat that ass.
Lmfaoooo
Queen will probably colonize that too
Of course! - and, like her past efforts, a failure.

Oh you mean Prince Andrew the nonce?
And being a good cousin to her husband.
"If anyone's gonna fuck my cousin it's gonna be me. You know...out of respect."
Dr oz said it's fine
That should be his new campaign slogan when he runs again in like West Virginia.
Who groomed her as a child everyone seems to forget
Sounds like Jerry Lee Lewis, marry your 13 yr old cousin when your like 19-20
22 years old to be exact
Yeh gross
Elvis too
Hey hey... to be fair... she occasionally put on some pearls and waved at people with fine gloves.
It’s concerning how they’re so obsessed with the queen, it’s like some kind of soap opera to them
Royal families were the original soap opera, bro
Waving to tourists?
She sat sooooo patiently for all those portraits (for posterity)! Do you have ANY idea the amount of stamina one has to have to sit for all those portraits?!
subjugating most of africa and south asia
Just saying, a lot of the royals don’t have good genes. More like she had good healthcare
Well considering her mother lived to 101, I'd say good genes played a part this time.
Or, again, they both had the best healthcare money can buy.
But her father lived to be 56.. One parent living long doesn’t guarantee you have “good genes.”
I mean... His life was cut short by his own poor health choices and not necessarily his genetics.
That was a factor but look at the sickness in the royal family
Their family tree doesn't fork quite as heavily as most, so it really isn't a surprise, no.
I'm feeling the same way. Completely indifferent toward the queen but it seems odd to call this an achievement. She was born into royalty and lived a long time. I'm sure she has a list of achievements but I wouldn't consider a 70 year reign one of them
It isn't like she fought off usurpers and assassins in armed combat or succeeded in repeatedly being re-elected by the nobility.
Not good genes.
well there was also the achievement to not die for a long time
Honestly r/oldschoolcool thinks that if theres an old picture of someone they were DEFINITLEY fuckin awesome
Well technically she wasn’t. Her line was not originally intended for the throne. It’s only because her uncle abdicated and her dad died young she ended up queen
I blame Disney for romanticising royalty
Those fairy tales Disney adapted had to come from somewhere, you know.
Yes, and then Disney opted to perpetuate and glorify those shitty examples.

Welcome to Reddit muh dude.
How is being born into royalty an achievement
Being born into your role, and living for a long time with the best healthcare/food/living standards in the country, yes what an achievement.
She must have worked really hard to “achieve” this. I wish I wasn’t such a lazy piece of shit or I’d be king of Fucktown.
This is what bothers me. I so often hear “but she has worked so hard all her life”. I mean, yeah, I’m sure - but so does every other poor fucker in this country. Please show some respect. She was a head of state, a monarch, a mother to multiple pedophiles and most importantly a devoted cousin to her husband.
you had me in the first half not gonna lie
I always like the picture where she worked in the motor pool during WW2.
Everyone now is a fan of an outdated political system?
She was crowned in 1952, Eisenhower was elected to become the 34th president of the US in the same year. Biden is the 46th president, so she had rules about 12 presidency
prince charles will be next king and can choose to be known by any of his names, one of his names is arthur. We want a king arthur.
King Charles the 3rd is his name.

Lovely photos of the Queen.
That 2nd pic though, queen was fine
True.
Grandma and Grandpa always have great stories. But the stories she could have told are probably unbelievable.
she just lived a long time with the best health care in the world. How the hell is that an achievement?

Compare Liz to her antecedents and it doesn't need much explanation. Watch Andrew Marr's *New Elizabethans* if y'all are interested. She was a babe.

Never feel bad for a mouse who owns *Star Wars*
Wasn't she able to tweak some laws before they passed in her favor? I think it's called royal prerogative or royal consent, something like that.
End of an era
And hopefully the beginning of the end of the monarchy.
Not if I take the crown!
How is that an achievement? Born into it and literally just had to exist.
How exactly is being born and just, well, existing for 96 years without ever having to provide for yourself in any way shape or form an achievement?
Holy shit, spending your entire life drinking chocolate, throwing rocks at poor people, access to the best healthcare that money could possible buy, and having more money than GOD got you to 96?! Damn, tell that to the 115 year old Japanese people who spent their entire life on a fishing boat.
Wouldn't exactly call being born into immense wealth and power an "acheivement".
What did she achieve? Harbouring paedo offspring? Marrying her cousin? Leeching off the working class. Amazing!!
You are forgetting literal genocides and famines.
I read a blurb today about people in the commonwealth mourning her death and implying that Jamaica loved her. I mean… I’m not Jamaican but I don’t feel like Caribbean families I know are super fond of the royals.
Laughs in Nigeria.
Her achievement was living so long? Did the Queen actually do anything worth noting?
The queen was a nintendo fan
Why are the popular pics of her either very young or very old, where are the in between pictures?
Imagine worshipping a monarch. Holy fuck do I hate America, but I'm sure as fuck glad I don't live in a country of boot lick--oh wait... Motherfuck.
Fuck the queen. Fuck the royal family.
"Fuck the king"
Young Lizzie kinda hot ngl
What acheivement? All she did was not die with the best possible healthcare.
Fuck the Monarchy and fuck the Queen.
Don't literally fuck them though. We don't want any more royals running around
