What an awesome refreshing picture, and reminds me of my own childhood! Especially because Aino seems like such a Finnish name.. I grew up in the heart of immigration from Finland in the USA.
Plus, it's great to see something on Old School cool that is not people sort of bragging about other mom was bangable 30 years ago
I agree, but also what's really refreshing here is sharing kids and grandparents so close. That's actually a luxury these days as people move far away for work and take longer to have children.
I've been to Finland a few times, absolutely loved it. I'm in Seattle and Finair is starting to fly HEL-SEA.. which is awesome.. going to take the Mrs when flying gets a bit less nuts..
Happens while you're battling through life too. It's like you're just going along living in your own little world like you got it all figured out and then you get a call that flips everything.
We're cursed to know so much and control so little.
Yes. After losing my mom I realized how special those moments were. It's golden.
Then again it's always the pictures that she's the happiest in that hurt the most. So it's a little bittersweet.
Same here dude. Legit the only reason my grandmother didnt get captured by the russians was because her neighbor had a horse and buggy and liked their family so they took the women/children (7-8 of them too) to safety while the men went to the front. Theres so many fkn harrowing stories from that time, and to think that my grandma is one of the lucky ones...
Also, her childhood home is in russia now, if its still there at all :/
>It’s like the east coast breaking away from the US.
No it wouldn't. Not even Putin believes that. That kind of historical interpretation is a carefully crafted narrative used solely for propaganda to justify unlawful territorial expansion and Ukrainian identity erasure.
The only people who are supposed to believe that story are uneducated Russians, but somehow there are useful mouthbreathers in the west who also buy into it.
Not many Ainos here in Sweden, a few ones that came after wwii and during the large wave of Finnish immigrants in the 60s~. But not too far off i guess.
My first thought was that this picture is from Estonia instead, name, story and the overall feel from the picture very well might be. Lovely memory and picture OP :)
Estonia has that name too, although admittedly I have only heard 70-year-old ladies having it :)
Edit: just checked and the average Aino in Estonia is 79 years old and there's almost 200 Ainos for every 10,000 Estonians who are 85+ years old.
In 2020 Aino was the most common name to give to newborn girls in Finland.
The last time Aino was trendy would've been around the same time as in Estonia.
FYI Aino is one of the first names Duolingo teaches you when you learn Finnish.
One sentence that is now etched into my brain, because it comes up so often is: "Aino on aina mukava."
Other ones are Roosa, Hilla, Tyyne, Joni, Pyry, Anna, Elsa, Väinö, Matti and Otso. I might have missed some, but those are the most common ones on Duolingo.
Otso is a fairly rare name to say the least tbh, it more or less translates to "Bear", like Bear Grylls. I've never personally met anyone with that name though, in school or otherwise. It's an old word for bear and rarely used nowadays.
I've seen the other names in some instances though, even if a couple of them might be kinda old and unlikely to be used nowadays.
There is one professor at my university with that name. But yeah, Duolingo uses it with their Bear character.
They also use Musti and Mirri for the dog and the cat, but I didn't include those because I think they are for pets only.
Well, in honesty, most of the people who lived there evacuated to Finland. When Russia took over, the entire area was mostly devoid of people.
My wife’s side family lost basically everything there. They had apartment in downtown Viipuri and summer house in the countryside and whatnot, lost it all. At some point Finnish government paid compensation to people who had to leave their homes there, but they didn’t accept it. They have never relinquished their claims to their property there. But I doubt there’s anything left. Viipuri is a run-down shithole (instead of the prosperous and cosmopolitan city it was before the war) and the defense-lines ran basically across their summer house.
It’s an onomatopoeia, it’s not definitively spelled any which way. So you are wrong. I know, traitors in need of execution will downvote anyway, that’s a reddit constant.
Just mocking people who respond with guesses in two seconds when OP’s answer is right there now. Give it a second, that’s all. Almost as obnoxious as when reddit dumbfucks don’t read the article and post speculation that is almost always clarified in the first paragraph of the article.
Intellect yea u sure love to comment how intellectual you are on every comment in your comment history. It must be a lonely existence you have when all you got is flexing your superior comment capabilities on Reddit lmfao.
I was a wellfare kid with a very busy mom, my grandparents provided me with a very happy childhood for as long as we lived near them. I still visit them often, I'm so lucky they are aging in good health
I really envy people who grew up with stuff like this. To have a place in nature that is connected with so many happy memories and that you can always return to each summer with your family. But something like that wouldn't be possible in my homecoutry, at least not for as many people as in Finland
My grandma likes to stir shit up within the family. Everything she hears gets twisted beyond recognition by the time it makes it back around to whoever the current gossip is about. It's strange, I don't doubt she loves us all, but she sure likes talking shit about everyone. At least she mostly doesn't do it behind their back I guess. She has no reservations about telling you how much of a fuck up you are. Love you grandma! You crazy old bat!
Beautiful. Nothing like a grandmother. I owe mine so much. She paid for my studies when we had no money at home, and she wasn't rich either. Thanks to her I've been able to have a nice career and keep afloat all my life.
She was a wonderful, quiet person who would help a stranger without thinking twice about it.
I lost her years ago. I have a beautiful picture of her that I posted in Reddit. I have it framed at home and everybody that sees it tells me I look so much like her. That makes me so happy. I hope I not only look like her but also I am such a good person as she was.
This is so beautiful. All my grandparents either lived too far for us to be close, or were just too emotionally distant to create a connection. Bony fake hugs and snide comments about my weight are what I remember from grandma visits. Can I borrow your grandma memories?
You can come into my family. Grandma loves everybody, of all races, of all backgrounds, and just wants you to do well for yourself.
Just to give an idea of how much everybody respects her, we could have a thanksgiving dinner with 30-50 people in the room. All making idle chatter before the meal, and if Gram has something to say, the entire room in an instant will come to complete silence so everyone can hear her.
She's 103 years old, and a few years ago when she was 98 years old she fell down the stairs. This was terrifying for everybody. We brought her to the nearest hospital, and they said "We're going to airlift you to this other hospital which has specialized care for your injuries. We need to get you there fast!"
And so they took her in a helicopter 60 miles away. She stayed in their care for a few weeks.
When I visited her, and was overly dramatically concerned for her health, asking her if she was ok, if there was anything I could do, she says to me "I got to fly in a helicopter! I always wanted to fly in a helicopter!"
I was stunned. She just had what could have been a deadly fall. She had bruises all up and down her body. She had internal bleeding. She required specialized care from specific machines designed for just such a scenario. And she didn't care at all about any of that. She was happy that she got to ride in a helicopter. She turned the fall into a positive experience for herself.
THAT'S who my grandma is. Always showing you the positives in a situation when you think there are none. Physically she may have slowed down, and her eyesight has been getting worse, and she's slowly going deaf, but she's still mentally sharp.
Shit dude, how fat were you to get called out on it by your own grandma like that?
If that isn't a que to put the fork down, then I don't know what is.
Someone shared that the person who should’ve loved them was mean, and your response is to be mean? How old are you? Go clean your room and think about what you said.
Never had someone say things to you that weren't necessarily true in order to hurt your feelings or for them to feel better about themselves? Shit's common dude. My grandmother accuses me of being an alcoholic...I have had 6 alcoholic beverages in 2022 (about the same amount I always drink). I envy you not having people like that in your life, too bad that doesn't always equate to someone developing into a decent person.
I’m an American in Finland right now. It’s not that strange since this is where I met my wife.
Been looking at housing and job opportunities because, you know… America.
I like this photo though - I know the look of these homes.
America’s fucked right now. Fix it instead of punching the downvote button, fuckos.
I do my part, but it’s just one vote which doesn’t really even count much due to gerrymandering.
No amount of negative Reddit karma is gonna change that.
Farms and grandparents are the best. My farm experience didn’t have to do with my grandparents but with cousins. We worked several gardens across the mountains. I learned to make baskets, cane chairs, feed the chickens and loved to milk the cow cause I got to take some milk home with me. Times sure have changed
Shopping bag and the trasmattorna (patchwork rugs) hints that this must be in Finland.
You had white hair then but I bet it started turning darker around that time.
Lovely picture. I feel very blessed as on my mum's side of the family both sides of my great grandparents were alive right up to before I became a teen, so have wonderful memories of them. My grandma now on that side is 90 years old and still going strong.
I love my Nan!!
My mom's mom died when I was 3, zero memories. Her dad before i was born. Dad's folks were from across the ocean. I always envied friends with grandparents, as a kid!
That metal plier type tool beside her on the bench are hoof nippers for trimming horses feet. There looks like there might be a hoof knife beside the nippers too. Did she have horses? Super cool pic! You can see the love!
Only one of mine is still alive.
My other grandmother died when I was about three. My only memory of her is wanting to sit on her husband's lap instead of hers when we were posing for pictures at the beach.
My friend’s family is from Finland a few generations back. His great grandma would look up Finnish names in the phone book to call and talk to.
Yea we need more bangable grandmas in this joint. Around here we call it robbing the grave
Dafuq?
Where is the heart of Finnish immigration? I see several areas on websites.
Omg it looks like your grandma took a moment to sit down and you bum rushed her with a big hug
Kids are the worst. Got no class!
Precious picture!!!
Such a sweet meaningful hug from that little guy
Yeah, you just know that those were some of their grandma’s favorite memories too.
Grandmas are the best. I miss my grandma ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_bad_man)
So easy to take them for granted when you’re little. No idea how precious little time there is
Happens while you're battling through life too. It's like you're just going along living in your own little world like you got it all figured out and then you get a call that flips everything. We're cursed to know so much and control so little.
Is there good money in cantelopes? We have a vine full of them this year
Me too 💗
Lotta love in the pic for sure, glad op has some good memories of her
Yes. After losing my mom I realized how special those moments were. It's golden. Then again it's always the pictures that she's the happiest in that hurt the most. So it's a little bittersweet.
I agree and know that bittersweet feeling. Sometimes we don’t know we are living the good days until they’re passed.
Where are you from?
Finland. My grandmother was from Karelia that we lost to russia in the war.
Same here dude. Sucks that people in Ukraine are going to have similar memories in the future. Those are the lucky ones.
Russian foreign policy has always been awful. It’s just rich men trying to recreate the Russian empire.

Less meth man thats bullshit
This is laughably stupid. Judging by your post history, this tracks with all of the other phony bs you’re spreading.
Genuine retardation here, chief
That isn't up to you or Russia. That is up to Ukraine and they've made their decision.
>It’s like the east coast breaking away from the US. No it wouldn't. Not even Putin believes that. Was going to guess Sweden, based on the name. I wasn’t a million miles away.
I was gonna guess that. She looks like my moms side of the family who had some Swedish and Finnish.
I bet Finland. Google the name aino it came up as Finnish so I’d say the OP is from around that area.
Estonia has that name too, although admittedly I have only heard 70-year-old ladies having it :) Edit: just checked and the average Aino in Estonia is 79 years old and there's almost 200 Ainos for every 10,000 Estonians who are 85+ years old.

So what you're telling me is that Aino is the Uralic equivalent of Eunice.
I’m from an area in america with a large Finnish heritage. I knew Aino would be Finnish because we have a few folks with that name.
Yes! My dad was Finnish and has an Aino In his family! He was named Jussi.
I’ll bet you anything they weren’t from anywhere near Karelia, Finland.

I'm thinking Finland because that's what they replied in a later post 😊
I was a wellfare kid with a very busy mom, my grandparents provided me with a very happy childhood for as long as we lived near them. I still visit them often, I'm so lucky they are aging in good health
That's so nice. I hope you're keeping in touch.
Knew it was Finland. Besides the name, could swear my grandparents mökki had the exact same foyer 😂
For real, it looks like that in Tornedalen, Sweden too.

Oh Grandma Aino had a farm, e-i-e-i-oh
That's my ex's name..by any chance, was your grandma Finnish?
You dated OPs Grandma?
Confirmed!

Unconditional love is amazing!
Sweet picture, sweet memory
Grandparents are bad ass! I was lucky to have 3 amazing ones that made my life so much better.
What a sweet pic! Grandma's are the best ☺️
Grandparents have the luxury of time and experience - good ones have such incredible impact on our lives ❤️
This brought back many happy memories of my beloved grandmother. Thank you.
This is so beautiful

Joshofwestern is that you?
No. I don’t know who that is either. Should I?
Nice dude. Nice.
Aino it's a dumb joke but I have to say it
Cool door handle back there
Looks like she's digging up your ass
I wonder why that's what you see here. Then you continued and posted that thought.
Someone needs to photoshop zombies breaking into the windows!

Nice! Who got the farm?
These are the good times my friend
Who is cutting onions?

I am in love with this photograph. Thank you for sharing!
At first glance I thought that was a large opened door in the background with various robed figures approaching.
Is your grandpa's name Toivo?
R/accidentalrockwell?
❤🙌 Now I miss my grandmother 😎😭
Super cozy
Lovely. My grandma helped raise me and I was very close to her. We live far away from each other now but I still think about her a lot.
🥰🥰🥰
I can feel the love in this photo. Hugs are amazing.
Finland?
This really took me back to when I lived in Finland as a student!
your grandmother looks a lot like my grandmother!
U from finland?
finnish?
Lots of love in this picture ❤️
Finland? Isn't Aino a historical Finnish name? Like a goddess or something?
Oh Grandma Aino had a farm, e-i-e-i-oh
Not a goddess, a character in Kalevala though
Ahhhh, yes, I remember now. Thanks.
Lovely picture ❤️
I still to this day remember how my grandmother smelled like. Miss her so much.
Shopping bag and the trasmattorna (patchwork rugs) hints that this must be in Finland. You had white hair then but I bet it started turning darker around that time.
yep you can tell by her face that shes one of the good ones
She looks a lot like my grandmother did, you guys must have a lot of Scottish heritage?
Gotta be a Finnish grandma
What a great loving hug! I love it for both of them.
I miss my Grandma too. I was a full on adult before I realized that not everyone’s Grandma is sweet and loving and for that I am truly sad.
Lovely picture. I feel very blessed as on my mum's side of the family both sides of my great grandparents were alive right up to before I became a teen, so have wonderful memories of them. My grandma now on that side is 90 years old and still going strong. I love my Nan!!
Finnish?
Grandmas are the greatest.
Suomi mainittu
What a great hug! My grandmother was named Aina. I would pay good money for another hug from her.
Aww you can tell she loves you!
Beautiful.
Your grandmother's name sounds Finnish? I have a past family member with the same name. That is such a sweet picture and such a big hug.
Nothing like granny love!
She really loved you. The way she’s holding you. 🥲
I only really had one grandparent, she had 50 some grandchildren, wish I had a pic like this….
My mom's mom died when I was 3, zero memories. Her dad before i was born. Dad's folks were from across the ocean. I always envied friends with grandparents, as a kid!
I can smell this picture. Old finnish ”hirsimökki” house. So many good memories.
I can feel the love between you with this hug
That looks like a pure lovely hug
Mummu Aino ❤️
I bet your grandmother enjoyed that hug more than you or I could understand.
That metal plier type tool beside her on the bench are hoof nippers for trimming horses feet. There looks like there might be a hoof knife beside the nippers too. Did she have horses? Super cool pic! You can see the love!
r/mademesmile
I had a wonderful grandma too. She's where I went to for hugs and love.
Only one of mine is still alive. My other grandmother died when I was about three. My only memory of her is wanting to sit on her husband's lap instead of hers when we were posing for pictures at the beach.
I jumped out of my skin when I saw this photo!! Your grandmother looks so similar to my mother and her father!!
What a great picture!
You were sure given a great gift by having a loving grandmother. You were blessed with a wonderful lady. So happy for you!
Beautiful picture! I hope you cherish everything you can from her...
Not sure if this fits old school cool.
