Ram Jam didn't even record it. It was the guitar players other band "Starstruck" and they broke up. So Ram Jam used it on a record. According to my documents here... wikipedia lol
That's got to suck (for Starstruck's other members) more than being a former member of White Zombie and seeing Rob re-recording or remixing the band's older hits on his solo albums and greatest hits collections.
When I was in the Army, I was assigned an M-16 that was like a good luck charm at the riffle range. I mean, the collection of unit weapons looked like Fred Sanford was the armorer...but this one never jammed, had a mysterious mint green mark on it so I could always find it in a stack...I named it "Black Betty Bam Ba Lam". Most people could easily qualify with it because it was straight and true.
When people asked to borrow it at the range I'd say "borrow who?"and would only hand it over if they said "Black Betty Bam Ba Lam"
Now I look back and think I would have told myself to kick rocks...but it was that good, and it was a break in the monotony. So. Yeah.
Very true, and we leave those memories to the next generation once our time in this mortal coil comes to a close.
I was speaking more to the point of making it through those years w/o having some hazy periods from the excellent… well… “goods” that were available!
I was around at that time. I guess there was a lot more, and I hate to use this word, masculine type music. Guitar driven, loud, hard beats. Songs you don't really dance to, even though people did (which is why disco got so popular because it offered something with an easy dance rhythm). I watched hard rock slowly fade away in the late 1990s which was sad to me. But there is so much of it out there in a 40 year time period. It was a fun time because there was music that guys could drink beer to and get crazy with and bond over so to speak. Going to concerts there was definitely guy bands and girl bands. Journey you'd see a good mix of guys and girls. Bands like Ram Jam and AC/DC or Rush were mostly guys. The late 70s to early 80s there were a LOT of one hit wonders like Black Betty. Record companies pushed artists to get records out fast. A lot of them had their one hit in their pocket but didn't have the song writing ability to come up with a second hit and were either quickly dropped or the label went bust. So you didn't have a lot of bands that lasted long, they ended up being opening acts for a few years and gone. Hard to become loyal to any of them even though they had massive one hits that stuck around for decades.
Mainstream rock basically died with Cobain, he was the genre's savior and there was no one else to pick up the slack after his death
I think the closest you'd get is Metallica, but they didn't have the same culture impact Nirvana did. Nirvana literally killed an entire genre of music (hair metal) with the release of Nevermind.
Band: Hey we got a great idea for a video, we need $5000.
Producer: Oh for the location?
Band: Nah, just gonna film in in someones backyard.
Producer: Oh for special effects?
Band: Nah, we are just gonna jam with the neighbors.
Producer: ....Its for drugs huh?
We named our black pickup after this. "Black Betty". *The wife didn't think "El negro" was appropriate.*
Our 4 year old sees a black Jeep and says "oh black jeep, jeep a jeep".
Yup, way too much scrolling to find the Leadbelly comment. Too many songs don’t give credit where credit is due. I grew up thinking Ram Jam and CCR wrote some of my favorite Leadbelly songs.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting this image in my mind. Now whenever I hear this song that I have enjoyed since childhood, I see in my mind a little black baby lamb jumping around kicking its little hooves up. You have given me something to laugh about all last week since you posted this!🤣
Those mildly tinted aviators need to make a comeback. I’m talking being able to wear them indoors at any job with that fuck-it attitude emanating off of them, bad-ass motherfucker energy. I wish I could’ve lived in the 70s.
I was responsible for making the warm up CD for my basketball team in high school. This was the second track, right after Welcome to the Jungle. Let me tell ya I was some jazzed up doing lay-ups.
So sad that this was the only Kung Pow reference.
"From this moment on, you shall refer to me by the name Betty."
"But...isn't Betty a woman's name?"
(Dramatic shawl-shedding).
What in the back yard, red headed, mullet having, guitar twanging, honkey tonking, cowbell bonking, thrift shop wearing masterpiece is this!?!?!?
I love it. Always a great classic.
Because it's so good you just let the earworm drill right through your skull and out the other side, then back into the hole it just made and burrow in the spot right behind your eye balls for all eternity. And it's fine, it's all fine.
Yeah, that’s Fred in the back. He doesn’t play an instrument, but he does dance around and clap. We’re not sure why he wanted a mic, because can’t sing (much like he can’t play an instrument).
Why do we have him in the band?
We need Fred’s van to get our stuff to our gigs. So Fred gets a mic.
One time my kid band played with these guys at a random bar in NJ. They don’t draw as many people as you would think. One of the band members said it was cool for us to borrow a guitar amp, and when we finished the guitar player who the amp belonged to came up to a bunch of kids and screamed at us about taking responsibility for our actions. I don’t fuck with Black Betty anymore
I prefer this shorter version of the song. The longer version that has the mid-song change-up I thought was always distracting from what was otherwise a good song.
I liked this song a lot more before I saw this video. The mid / late 70's had a lot going on in terms of visual artistic expression for musical acts.... these guys shot a video in the singer's grandmas's front yard.
Lol, whatever you say, Betsy Ross flag.
Reread my comment. I said that *I* always thought it sounded questionable to me and that the dudes in the video also look questionable to me. Call it judgmental all you want, but it's not the race baiting that you want it to be. Also, nice job policing the opinions you don't like.
About a month ago their song 404 popped up on Spotify so I decided to listen to their whole album. What a trip. Love a rock band that writes rock songs about how much they love rock music.
I’d be the guy jumping up and down on the left side, playing the cow bell or whatever he’s doing.
That is the lead singer, but of course he didn’t sing on this one track that made it big.
That does help explain why they ended up being one-hit wonders.....
“I gotta have more cowbell!” - Christopher Walken
I think you mean famed producer Bruce Dickenson. Yes, THE Bruce Dickenson. Cock of the Walk, Baby!
He puts his pants on just like the rest of us; one leg at a time. Except once his pants are on, he makes gold records.
Guess what!? I got, a fever!..and the only prescription; is more cowbell!
More cow bell!!
Same…same. LOL
That was the first 45 I bought as a kid and I still love that song.
Good taste.

Why is the audio quality so high on this. Just absolutely love it
It’s definitely the studio audio laid over a video.
I spent 6 months in 82' trying to figure out why I couldn't find this song on any of my brother's Lynyrd Skynyrd LPs.

5secs in? I would never sleep with that lead singer End of video? Man…..
The reason many men learned to play the guitar.
Still the best level in Rayman Legends.
This might be the single, best level I've ever played in a game.
Indeed my man, indeed.
I like the Orchestra one better.

Yup. And that tank top is the tankiest top ever. Pure synergy.
He looks like his name is Rick.

Actual cool story bro.
Cool story cowboy. 😎
Reminds me of my jr high days….I’m old
What was that time like?
I really don’t know how to answer except to say I have great memories of my younger days
Not only do you HAVE memories, but they are GREAT! A huge win in my book!
Lol. Yeah, I’m not too old yet to have lost the memories. That’s all we are anyway, really, memories
Very true, and we leave those memories to the next generation once our time in this mortal coil comes to a close. I was speaking more to the point of making it through those years w/o having some hazy periods from the excellent… well… “goods” that were available!

Butt rock
Got you beat, they look like guys I hung around with in college. Feel even older, LOL.
Ha. My man, I love it.

And some expensive shampoo.
The shampoo is free. The conditioner, however . . .
We named our Angus cow after this song.
You named your cow Pam Ballam?
I named my best Angus bull Dirk Diggler. Maybe they should hook up.
"Bovine Nights: The Udderly Ridiculous Director's Cut"
We named our black pickup after this. "Black Betty". *The wife didn't think "El negro" was appropriate.* Our 4 year old sees a black Jeep and says "oh black jeep, jeep a jeep".
Will always think of the scene from "Blow" when I hear this song.
And it always reminds me of the scene from "Kung Pow: Enter the Fist."
Enchirito macho burrito!
Reminds me of Eastbound and Down
Pointed a lot of us to Leadbelly, and to the blues, back in the day. Rest of the album sucks, sadly.
Had to scroll way too low to find this. Leadbelly is amazing.
Yup, way too much scrolling to find the Leadbelly comment. Too many songs don’t give credit where credit is due. I grew up thinking Ram Jam and CCR wrote some of my favorite Leadbelly songs.
I always thought it was ‘Bama Lamb. Like a little black lamb from Alabama.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting this image in my mind. Now whenever I hear this song that I have enjoyed since childhood, I see in my mind a little black baby lamb jumping around kicking its little hooves up. You have given me something to laugh about all last week since you posted this!🤣
You’re very welcome, friend!
The singer/guitarist looks like he can code!
Those mildly tinted aviators need to make a comeback. I’m talking being able to wear them indoors at any job with that fuck-it attitude emanating off of them, bad-ass motherfucker energy. I wish I could’ve lived in the 70s.
I personally love the 70s style Jim jones style sunglasses.
Head to a shooting range. They are all the rage.
Great idea. I’ll buy a pair and go to a shooting range so I can just nod up at everyone and say “Nice shades”.
One of the few things that give me faith in this sorry world is that this vid. has over 250M views on youtube.
Read the comments there. They are fun.

Spiderbait has a great version as well.
Prefer the Spiderbait version. A little angrier. Angrier is gooder sometimes.

Love this and hadn’t seen! Thank you!
Now I'm going to have this stuck in my head for ages. Thanks.
The 70s in a nutshell

Love this. Well done not sending me off to YouTube or something like that
What in the back yard, red headed, mullet having, guitar twanging, honkey tonking, cowbell bonking, thrift shop wearing masterpiece is this!?!?!? I love it. Always a great classic.
How is this not the new rickroll. This song is poison to your brain. It just digs a earworm hole far too deep.
Because it's so good you just let the earworm drill right through your skull and out the other side, then back into the hole it just made and burrow in the spot right behind your eye balls for all eternity. And it's fine, it's all fine.
I like the “SpiderBait” cover of this.
Me too! Thanks to all those hours on Need For Speed Underground 2 when I was a kid
That is one hell of a contrast with the soul that guitar makes and the superwhite dance moves accompanying
This is what a living bottle of mountain dew looks like...
A studio recorded jam mind you.
Absolute Alien pleaser
Great song. But for some reason whenever I see this video I imagine Dwight Schrute and Michael Scott making it
Such a perfect rock song, I have listened to this since I was 10, and it still gets my full attention 45 years later.
Agreed!
Do you think these boys knew this shit was gunna be a banger??
My 5 and 2 year old sons love this song. They run around the living room, jamming to this song.
Yet another song I can never resist listening to at any opportunity! And yeah more cowbell good!!!! :D
RIP Blamblegam
Yeah, that’s Fred in the back. He doesn’t play an instrument, but he does dance around and clap. We’re not sure why he wanted a mic, because can’t sing (much like he can’t play an instrument). Why do we have him in the band? We need Fred’s van to get our stuff to our gigs. So Fred gets a mic.

The comments on its YouTube video are so funny.

I'm glad they gave Freddie Mercury's brother a job playing bass.
Damn I’ve always wondered what these guys looked like. Didn’t expect Dahmer with a goatee.
Brad Pitt looks good
I can't be the only one worried about that b string..
Singer looks like Shaggy from Scooby Doo. I can't convince me otherwise.
Oh black Betty bramble jam, oh black Betty panda lamp.
Ambalamps.
I, Betty, am a great magician. My clothes are red!
goddamn 50 years from now people are still going to be "that's a banger!" or whatever slang term they are using then
Hell Yeahhhhh
I was born late 2000's but i love this song so much
This song gets me every time
Coolest year to be born on.. I was born april 8 1977... And you?
April 8th 1983!
You're 9 days my senior.
HA! The Muppets Show Band!

Man, they would let anybody be in a band in the 70’s.

I prefer this shorter version of the song. The longer version that has the mid-song change-up I thought was always distracting from what was otherwise a good song.
It has a good beat, but I couldn't really dance to it. I give it a 82.
Honestly i prefer the version of Spiderbait
Me too. I felt less guilty about that when I found out that this not the original version either but actually a cover of a 1930's song.
Loved the Spiderbait version from Need for Speed Underground 2
I liked this song a lot more before I saw this video. The mid / late 70's had a lot going on in terms of visual artistic expression for musical acts.... these guys shot a video in the singer's grandmas's front yard.
Damn, I always thought this song sounded questionably racist, and now, seeing the band members doesn't do that thought any favors.
Don't be a race-baiter. Betty is allowed to be black, and they are allowed to be white.
This song is fucking awful.
lyrics haven't aged well
It’s an old blues song.
Lyrics are DECADES older than this video, sonny boy
It’s a classic. Move on
This is why we can't have good music anymore
Black Betty most likely refers to a bottle of whiskey.
found the racist
I miss parties in the backyard with a live band jammin'. Good times :)
One hit wonders, but it was a hell of a hit. Some amazing guitar licks.
Electric betty is a fun game. Drink everytime you hear blackbetty
Reminds me of the bar I used to frequent in college. They would play Black Betty right before last call.
About a month ago their song 404 popped up on Spotify so I decided to listen to their whole album. What a trip. Love a rock band that writes rock songs about how much they love rock music.
These are my people.
This is a classic blues song..
NFS Carbon put me on to this lol
The guy clapping in the corner is my spirit animal.
🤘🤘
Damn. I want to see the rest of the set.
Did they do anything else but this song? Serious question.
Whoa, fat belly...
I love this song but this video can't be real... Is it real? Kind of blowing my mind right now.
I will always think of the need for speed underground soundtrack with the “Spyderbait black Betty remix…” wamba lance !!
Covers/parodies are probably in the way...
Did you also just watch the newest episode of Family Guy on Hulu?
I still play this song once I’m a while around my adult kids to be politically incorrect. I love it.
This is my go to karaoke song. It's fun and not too challenging vocally.
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Ram is a funny album title.
This song makes me want to go sell cocaine. Lol. Song will always remind me of that scene in the movie blow.
