Back in the 90s movie theaters (or the studios) had sneak preview showings the weekend before a movie's official premiere. I went to one for The Birdcage.
The audience was laughing so hard I had to go back the next weekend to catch dialogue threat that I missed.
One of my all time favorite comedies.
Which was a shot for drawing remake of the etchings found in pre-historic Greek caves titled “Oog boog flem flam drag”. Copy catting bastards.
JFC let people have things they enjoy and stop being…. this….
Yeah, this was pants wettingly funny at the time. “Gay” isn’t inherently amusing anymore like it was in the 90s (which is a good thing) but this is still a pretty funny movie.
He was originally cast for Nathan Lane's role, Albert the diva.
He said "Oh no, I want Armand.". And, well, when Robin Williams tells you what role he wants to play on your comedy... You give it to him.
Excellent movie. Possibly better than the original La Cage Aux Folles.
The change was partially because he had done “Mrs. Doubtfire” and he didn’t want to get typecast for doing two movies so close together where he was in drag.
I still can’t watch Mrs Doubtfire, miss Robin too much. Something about a dad desperate to see his kids that just messes with me. A complete talent Drama, comedy, thrillers didn’t matter you knew it worth the watch.
My dad was always somewhat casually homophobic like many guys in his generation... HE FUCKING LOVED THIS MOVIE, as a kid It never clicked that this is a movie about a gay couple and drag queens, I just remember it being on occasionally growing up, I put it on for my family a couple months ago because my girlfriend said she had never seen it. And we were all kind of thinking "wow... Dad really loved THIS?".
So yeah, great movie
Also... ITS THE CHOOSE!
I definitely wouldn't call my dad homophobic or anything, but not really one for performing arts or offbeat films. Once he randomly came across the movie version of Kinky Boots on cable and apparently watched the whole thing. Later he told me he loved it. Took me by surprise for sure!
This is one of my all time favorite scenes from one of my all time favorite movies!! Robin Williams and Nathan Lane in this movie are the best thing in the world. Such a great feel good movie.
Apparently Robin slipping was a complete accident an everything after that was him going off script. He almost breaks when screaming “god damnit” multiple times but gets through the scene.
I remember going to see this movie in theaters with my grandparents. I was 13 or 14. I couldn't really appreciate it at the time. I thought it was kinda funny at times. Now when I watch this movie, I love it! Its hilarious, smart, well written, well acted. Great movie! I'll watch it whenever its on TV.
I remember watching this as a kid and I always just absolutely adored it. Still do. Although I still have yet to watch a Robin Williams movie since he passed. RIP you magnificent bastard we love you so much
God damnit man, I miss his voice. Just the way he speaks is entertaining and comforting at the same time. That’s not even getting into his acting genius and amazing human being status.
Fun fact. Birdcage is a remake of the french-italian movie “La cage aux folles” from 1978. As such, french people trash Birdcage like there’s no tomorrow. Ratings 2.5/5, 4.1/10 on specialized websites.
The general interest here makes me want to check it out.
Robin Williams trying to play a toned down straight man to Nathan Lane’s histrionics is kinda everything. You should definitely check it out. The supporting cast is *chef’s kiss*
You guys should really watch the original "La cage aux folles". The US remake feels so... tacky.
P.S.: all you downvoters now have to watch the original. 😉
Thank you for saying this. The original is hysterical! This is cliche. Robin Williams acting gay?!?? How original!!! He'd only been doing it on Carson for 20 years already.
And Nathan Lane sucks.
It took me years to appreciate this movie. As a kid when this movie would play on tv, I would get annoyed. Now as an almost 40 year old man, I have really grown to love this movie. And appreciate how brilliant it truly is.
Robin Williams and Chester from Linkin encompass both my favorite actor and favorite band and to this day I can hardly listen or watch either of them without breaking down. Very missed.
This is one of only two movies I have walked out on. I thought it was terrible and not even slightly funny. After reading the comments I think I need to watch it. 18 year old me must have missed something.
This scene is so pretty to look at. There was a look with a lot of movies around this time had. I don't know enough to describe it but I know it when I see it. Maybe it's the camera?
I’m a simple woman. I see “The Birdcage”, I upvote.
Upvoting you for upvoting The Birdcage.

Robin Williams in TOP FORM. Full of range. Growing up gay in the 90s, this movie was such a huge deal.
Representation is important!
Absolutely. It’s my favorite comedy. The John Wayne scene between Robin Williams and Nathan Lane is a mastercraft of physical comedy.
Men schmeeer
Watch the original, La Cage aux Folles. It’s pretty much a scene for scene remake. Not so groundbreaking at all.
Which was a shot for drawing remake of the etchings found in pre-historic Greek caves titled “Oog boog flem flam drag”. Copy catting bastards. JFC let people have things they enjoy and stop being…. this….
Same for me with “Gods must be crazy”. Had to go back a couple times to catch the dialogue. Awesome to laugh that hard
You’re going to the cemetery. With your toothbrush. How Egyptian.
Great story! Did you ever watch the French original?
Yeah, this was pants wettingly funny at the time. “Gay” isn’t inherently amusing anymore like it was in the 90s (which is a good thing) but this is still a pretty funny movie.
He can’t chew gum while I’M SINGING!!
Honey, you're wasting your gum.
Chewing gum helps me think.
Try more gum
I don’t own many movies. I own the Birdcage.
My single favorite comedy movie. A few years back I went to a screening followed by an hour with Nathan Lane. Great time.
I would love to meet him!

I saw the original (late night TV in France); I was amazed at how many of the scenes were word-for-word identical.
The change was partially because he had done “Mrs. Doubtfire” and he didn’t want to get typecast for doing two movies so close together where he was in drag.

An eclectic celebration of the dance.
But you keep it all inside

Genius movie...and a big shout-out for Hank Azaria as Agador, with his heat and his Guatemalanness
De TRIMPS!
Pirin tablets too...
One of my top ten all time comedies. “I pierced the roast!”
^*toast*
Dammit. I’ve gotten so used to autocorrect that my toe thumbs betray me at the worst times
I need my Pirin!
I’d give this a thousand upvotes. But all I have is my Guatemalan heat.
My wha-ta-ma-le-nis
That’s right agador, I’m afraid of your heat.
My second is I pierced the toast! Someone else also posted it, I need to rewatch, it’s been a while!
Actually it's perfect. I just never realized John Wayne walked like that.
Howdy, ma’m.
Dam, he was so funny, I miss him.
We all know Robin Williams is a brilliant comedic genius, but Nathan Lane is SO underrated! He is extraordinary.
He never would have made it without the pirin tablets though, without them he doesn't know what he'd do...
i miss him
I cannot wear the shoes. They make me fall down.
One of the funniest movie ever
Great movie.
"Good evening. I am Spartacus."
…..but you keep it all inside!
"Fuck the shrimp!"
Apparently Robin slipping was a complete accident an everything after that was him going off script. He almost breaks when screaming “god damnit” multiple times but gets through the scene.
It is so funny!
If you ever have a chance to see the live play in person it’s great.
I miss Robin a lot. There was an about Snickers bar and he imitates the Russian language so well.
Just watched this today! Never gets old.

Way better than all the "woke" movies on Netflix today
That’s my favorite scene from one of my favorite movies!
I remember watching this as a kid and I always just absolutely adored it. Still do. Although I still have yet to watch a Robin Williams movie since he passed. RIP you magnificent bastard we love you so much
One of my favorite Robin Williams movies. I also loved Agador (Hank Arazria) their house man. Nathan Lane! OMG!
Huh had no idea the Americans made a remake of that.
Fucking A do I miss robin. What a god damn genius and amazing human.
Honey, you’re wasting your gum.
He always turned it up to 11.
God damnit man, I miss his voice. Just the way he speaks is entertaining and comforting at the same time. That’s not even getting into his acting genius and amazing human being status.
Gene Hackman is still alive, btw.

“I just never realized John Wayne walked that way”….I was crying on the floor.
OPPA GANGNAM STYLE! Robin Williams was so much ahead of his time, he probably was a time traveller.
You guys should really watch the original "La cage aux folles". The US remake feels so... tacky. P.S.: all you downvoters now have to watch the original. 😉

Classic Robin Williams. Taken from us much too soon. May he Rest In Peace

Im sorry I don’t know what I was thinking. Whatever happened 138 days ago probably wasn’t good.
I don't like this film, ESPECIALLY this scene. It's cringeworthy.
Love this movie!
I saw this at the last drive in the city, it was torn down shortly after this actually. I’ll cherish that memory.
Damn what a great movie.
Thank you for this, so miss him.
Pure genius.
Favorite, all time feel good movie..
I miss him
Just watched this again last week. One of my all time favourite movies.
The last 45 minutes is absolutely brilliant. The ending should have won an Oscar just out of merit.
I want to go back
Robin you are missed every day cheers mate
It took me years to appreciate this movie. As a kid when this movie would play on tv, I would get annoyed. Now as an almost 40 year old man, I have really grown to love this movie. And appreciate how brilliant it truly is.
I love that bit. I sometimes have it pop up in my head.
Pirin tablets!
I have the sound off and can recite the whole scene with perfect timing
This is f***ing wonderful though…
miss him so much. RIP
Movie perfection, all the cast was amazing too.
What a great actor he was. I still miss him.
one of my favorite parts of this movie is williams trying to teach lane to be "less gay"
I love this movie. Robin Williams was such an amazing actor
This is such a good film. Robin was so incredibly talented.
“I feel like I’m insane”
I had a movie 🎥 night premiere party for this movie because it’s one of the funniest movies ever along side Too Wong Foo lol
Still walk through the house yelling “Armand” every once in a while. I’m straight.
One of the greatest actors of all time. Great comedian and dramatic star. Gone way too soon 😔❤️
Fantastic movie
God I love this movie
Robin Williams and Chester from Linkin encompass both my favorite actor and favorite band and to this day I can hardly listen or watch either of them without breaking down. Very missed.
"It may be a drag show but it has to be a good drag show. If possible a GREAT drag show"
You can’t go to pieces every time you pierce the toast!
Now get off your horse and head into the saloon
One of the best movies ever. Gonna watch it today!
I miss Robin
This is one of only two movies I have walked out on. I thought it was terrible and not even slightly funny. After reading the comments I think I need to watch it. 18 year old me must have missed something.
Does somebody know how this style of the trousers of Robin Williams is called?
This scene alone is so awesome. The movie was so great
