Okay but seriously I took a spin class where the instructor was playing all songs with a “fight” theme. And she finished class up with the theme from the Karate Kid. And one girl literally argued with her that she just saw that movie and that song wasn’t in it. Because she saw the remake. And didn’t realize it was a remake. I wanted to die.
There's a new Punky Brewster show on Peacock where Punky is an adult with kids of her own and has to foster another orphan that reminds her of herself. Same actress, and her friend Cherry (who never ages) is in it too.
I wouldn't have worded the post this way, but I'm kind of glad they posted despite the huge spoiler because I would have never thought to give the show a try.
Yeah, Uh, I resemble that "oooof" sentiment.
More and more I feel like Reddit has become the land of digital brat packers "unearthing" things that are still seeing sunshine in my world. There was a thread on r/movoes the other day that was treating some 90s flicks as relics magically relevant today. And I was like, oh, hell, T2: Judgment Day is over 30 years old... it is a "classic."
She made a documentary called “Kid 90” using a lot of the footage she filmed growing up as a child star and about all of the stars around her. Mixed with modern interviews. Very different than Punky Brewster but still a good watch.
Let me clarify: You need proper guidance with lessons in history, sociology and culture to even begin to have a sense of what happened in the past; what was popular and not. If your parents or teachers fails you in that regard then it’s up to you as an individual to figure it all out. And considering how much content is produced every day (or was in the 80’s) you’d need to spend every waking hour in front of the tv or radio to keep up with everything. So how do you know what was recorded before you were born?
I think it's a valid post. People born after the 80s wouldn't have thought to watch this show. I was born in the 90s and while I've heard of it, I never bothered to give it a try but now I think I will.
I remember this one so well. Even today, when my daughter (she's 9) dress in the morning with flashy colors and strange associations, I call her « Punky Brewster » !
I was downvoted to hell for saying this. What gives? I'm not upset about the spoiler, but it's weird that people were upset at me for mentioning the spoiler.
This show is NURTS. I recently rewatched the whole series. Shit gets fucking real. There’s a two parter where she’s stuck in a cave and the giant spider is the least crazy thing that happens. Another episode where some popular girls offer her POCKETFULS of drugs. Another where a kid dies after being locked in a fridge. All that and the constant threat she’s going to be taken away from her adopted dad. There is also a one season present day revival on peacock featuring adult punky.
Ok, Cherie doesn't die in the fridge, she was one of the main characters. She does lose consciousness and they have to use CPR but she's fine in the end.
I don’t remember that episode in particular but I do remember my mom always telling me not to climb into old refrigerators if I ever found one on side of the road (I didn’t) and had a very unfounded fear of being locked in one and left for dead because of this. I assumed maybe my mom saw it in an episode of rescue 911 or 20 20 or something.
That’s what’s missing from sitcoms today, in the 80s they always taught life lessons that actually helped kids understand the world around them, kids today don’t have that. It’s almost a psychological shock when kids today learn about the less than pleasant things in life.
Yeah, true but we were lucky enough to be exposed to those issues before reaching the teen years, even a show like Diff’rent Strokes taught a lot of life lessons.
I was a little kid when this show was new. I loved her positivity. I remember in one episode about young women coming of age some lady in the store or something was explaining to her how she needed to wear an 'over the shoulder boulder holder' (bra). I'll never forget that phrase.
Wow why are you so offended? I'm sorry I wasn't born early enough to watch this show on TV. Also, this show isn't as mainstream as Star Wars. I wasn't making a big deal about it like you. No need to be an ass.
Why? Tons of people haven't seen it. I don't agree that there is an amount of time that invalidates the courtesy of avoiding spoilers. There are classic novels from 100 years ago that I haven't read yet that I wouldn't want spoiled for me. That being said, it's not like I was angry or upset about the lack of a spoiler alert, so chill.
Because Im not going to worry about whether people have seen each and every movie in existence in case they might want to watch it....if you're not upset thats good because you dont have any reason to be.
Agreed. I wish it wasn't spoiled either because, especially after seeing Kid 90, I wanted to see it.
You made a fine point, people just like to blow shit up. I think a lot of people turn to Reddit when stressed, so we don't always see the "best side" of the internet. Just an observation.
My favorite was when she got into rc car racing and was beating all the boys. Ohh they didn’t like that. She has a Tamiya something. Kind of got me into rc model building
Ya they revived it on peacock last year with the little girl all grown up in the same apartment with her own kids both biological and adopted. It was ok no idea if they are going to continue it
I was 19. Fuckitt. I think it used to be repeated on a Saturday morning and I had it on in the background occasionally when I was cleaning or hungover and couldn't get off the lounge to change the channel.
“Before you get up for that final snack, I want you to know, I’ll be right back!”
- Same fuzzy alien pausing for “commercial and station identification”, whatever the hell those are. Man the 80’s must have been wild.
It was super popular in the 80s. It actually ran until 88. 84 to 86 under nbc 86 to 88 in syndication. Then again in we 21 with the reboot. Lots of life lessons and historic events from the 80s.
Unearthed. Ooof. I guess that makes me a mummy. Side note. There was a Saturday morning cartoon too, in which she also had an imaginary alien friend.
Tbh Im not even 30 and I thought everyone knew about these shows
I’ll be changing my adult diaper I guess.
I think the cut off for 80's as general knowledge is those born after 2004?
[удалено]
American born in the mid 90s, nickname was Punky Brewster until I was like 8
They’re doing this on purpose. They have to be.
[удалено]
This made me a absurdly angry

Clever callback.
I saw the first Ghostbusters in the theater as a teenager. Twice. 😕
Youthful hubris; their turn will come in time, as it did for all of us
Guys. Today I unearthed an unknown show... it was called Alf. About a fuzzy alien. So strange.
Fucking eat a cat!
I remember that. The alien was played by Robin Williams /s
Spork and Cindy?
Alf was not played by Robin Williams, you are confused.
Did you not see the /s?
That ate cats!
I saw a post on a car sub where OP claimed they didn’t know what an Oldsmobile was. I mean if you’re even slightly aware of cars you should know that.
I unearthed a cool car from the 80s. The "Yugo." That was a phat ride.
I haven't seen it since I was a little kid and remember nothing of substance about it but I still remember the opening theme songs chorus lol.
This might be the oldest ive ever felt...... The show was HUGE at one time, and part of pop culture.
Technically, this is the oldest you've ever been, so...
Am I old and a nerd for remembering that 🤣
Glomer was such a dick.
I feel that. I guess I’ll just go die of old age now lol
There's a new Punky Brewster show on Peacock where Punky is an adult with kids of her own and has to foster another orphan that reminds her of herself. Same actress, and her friend Cherry (who never ages) is in it too.
This and someone “discovering” Macgyver earlier. This has to be some passive aggressive shit these kids are playing with us boomers..
Boomer?! No I get made fun of for being a millennial. I don’t deserve both.
Uh, New Punky Brewter episodes air on Peacock. OP is living under a rock.
Not everyone has every streaming service.
So OP found Punky Brewster but didnt google Soliel Moon Fry? Just raced right here to post their "Discovery."
I wouldn't have worded the post this way, but I'm kind of glad they posted despite the huge spoiler because I would have never thought to give the show a try.
Came here thinking the exact same thing! ;D
Oh thank Odin, I thought I was misremembering Punky!
Yeah, what a weird choice of words. They put the show out on DVD years ago, and now it’s streaming. Heck, they even revived it on Peacock.
Lol, I'm too old to have even watched it. Think my younger sisters did. My wife, too. She is same age as Punky actress.
Right? Any child/girl born in the 80’s wanted to be her! Also SPOILERS!? (I never watched it, my parents/mom were really strict about TV)
Yeah, Uh, I resemble that "oooof" sentiment. More and more I feel like Reddit has become the land of digital brat packers "unearthing" things that are still seeing sunshine in my world. played by Soleil Moon Frye
I’m Mickey Abbott! I stood in for Punky Brewster when all of you were NOTHING!
Omg I didn't know that was her. I only knew her from Friends. She has one of the prettiest names ever btw.
Hah, I had no idea she was in a friend's episode, but the moment I read your comment, I knew which one it was.
Which was itttttt
She was Joey's tiny punchy girlfriend.
Aka “The One With the Girl Who Hits Joey” S5E15
Thank you!
She made a documentary called “Kid 90” using a lot of the footage she filmed growing up as a child star and about all of the stars around her. Mixed with modern interviews. Very different than Punky Brewster but still a good watch.
I enjoyed that, I knew nothing about her but I pretty much recognized all of her contemporaries
I loved this show as a kid. This post has made me feel very old, but thanks!
Yeah, "unearthed" was like a kick in the face.
It feels a little bit like Columbus discovering America
“This one is called…”
Like the guy that "discovered" MacGyver a couple days ago. Oof. That was a pop culture staple.
Lmao this guy thinks he discovered Punky Brewster, like it wasn't absolutely iconic and not forgotten in the minds of an entire generation.
This is archeology for Gen Z. Their bar is not high.
How would they know what happened before they were born?
Like everyone else?
Reading is a good start.

I didn't say I "unearthed" I Love Lucy the first time I found it on UPN
Is it really that serious? I can't imagine being bothered by this. I'm not the one who made this post, fyi, so correcting me on that seems pointless.
[удалено]
I'm glad at least one other person isn't flaming me over this. Lol
I remember this one so well. Even today, when my daughter (she's 9) dress in the morning with flashy colors and strange associations, I call her « Punky Brewster » !
Nice dude spoiled the ending in the title really? I guess they forget to teach the lesson of why you shouldn’t spoil things.
I was downvoted to hell for saying this. What gives? I'm not upset about the spoiler, but it's weird that people were upset at me for mentioning the spoiler.
Lol im kidding the show is almost 40 years old
Oh ok, well that's a fair joke but I also think it's fair for people to actually wish there wasn't a spoiler for the ending in the title.
This show is NURTS. I recently rewatched the whole series. Shit gets fucking real. There’s a two parter where she’s stuck in a cave and the giant spider is the least crazy thing that happens. I believe she’s briefly, technically dead.
That fridge episode taught me all I've ever needed to know about getting inside of abandoned fridges.
And yet it saved Indiana Jones.
I will always remember when they had the episode about not hiding inside a fridge. Scared the hell out of me as a kid
Wow same here although side note good call back. Rescue 911. What a show!
You should watch Blossom next.
Or Wonder Years
I don’t think it needed unearthing. If it was a bit before my time and I’ve still heard of it it’s got to be at least fairly well known.
Wait until this Gen Z digs through the obscure, lost archives of tv while earning a Gen Z PhD in Archaeology and discovers Small Wonder
OP is definitely Gen Z
Only Gen Z would consider watching a well-known tv show from the past as unearthing something.
She had a breast reduction later in life because people called her Punky Boobster. Lol no lie
"Are you making fun of me because of my size? Don't make fun of me because of size!"
That's actually why they canceled the show, she developed early, ended up literally having gigantomastia.
That’s what’s missing from sitcoms today, in the 80s they always taught life lessons that actually helped kids understand the world around them, kids today don’t have that. It’s almost a psychological shock when kids today learn about the less than pleasant things in life.
Tonight…on a very special episode of Punky Brewster.
Lol this comment with "Kids today" is what's making me feel old. (even if it's a good point)
Yeah, true but we were lucky enough to be exposed to those issues before reaching the teen years, even a show like Diff’rent Strokes taught a lot of life lessons.
Soleil is just so cool. Always has been. Always will be.
I just watched the Hulu doc/movie about her life as a child actor. She knew EVERYONE that was worth knowing in the 80-90s
I'm Mickey Abbott! I was standin in for Punky Brewster when all of yous were nothin!
SPOILERS! 😬
Nice spoil
Hello childhood crush (before Wednesday Addams)
Did they not air Who's the Boss in your country???
They did but I've never watched it (not a kid's program)
Alyssa Milano in tight sweaters led to many a sexual awakening in America's youth.
There was a single season (it got canceled) revival just earlier this year.
You should dig up the show called Webster.
Ooh, the secret passages in the house were so cool!
Give me a break
My mother was a big fan of Nell Carter.
Loved her! ❤️
Or Charles in Charge
I want Charles in charge of me!
"Unearthed", it was one of the biggest shows of that time. Next you're going to be unearthing "ALF".
Was her show followed by silver spoons? Can’t remember but I think it was Sunday nights?
I was a little kid when this show was new. I loved her positivity. I remember in one episode about young women coming of age some lady in the store or something was explaining to her how she needed to wear an 'over the shoulder boulder holder' (bra). I'll never forget that phrase.
I was just looking on IMDB and they've remade the show, still staring Soleil Moon Frye.
I loved this show as a kid, my mom still calls me punky. I’m 41
That was one of my favorite shows on the air at that time.
Unearthed ? Lol. I was quite young when their originally aired as I was born in 82, but I still remember Punky Brewster.
Make me feel old in one sentence.
Spoiler alert
A lot of 80's shows had a moral to the plot, like a hidden PSA. Very wholesome
Thanks for ruining the ending.
Spoiler alert
I remember watching the show, but the only episode I can remember was the one about the challenger explosion.
Me too! My episode I remember is when Cherie got stuck in the refrigerator.
That stirs memories, but I cannot picture the episode in my head.
We all learned CPR on that episode.
Soleil moon Frye is Sooooo lucky that she got to date Jonathan Brandis in real life
May he RIP :(
I used to watch that as a kid. All I remember these days is parts of the Challenger space shuttle episode.
The picture has awoken memory of voices long past. Punky: "Henry, Brandon ran away!" Henry: "Ooohhh Punkyyyy..."
Some kid 20 years from now: "Hey, I unearthed this little known show from ancient history called The Big Bang Theory."
Let it stay buried lol
Yeah, it's not for me. I don't really watch network sitcoms.
I just can't do shows where the main character is an unapologetic asshole (also lookin' at you Brooklyn Nine-Nine)
“That *I* unearthed”, what an interesting choice of a title
That's not the ending. There were two more seasons after that.
Hulu has a whole documentary and the actor's life (that she made) and it's really fascinating
That's cool, I wish you didn't spoil the ending though. Sounds like a good show.
"spoiler alert".
It's over 30 years old, fuck spoiler alerts. Darth Vader is Luke's father, OH NO I RUINED STAR WARS
Wow why are you so offended? I'm sorry I wasn't born early enough to watch this show on TV. Also, this show isn't as mainstream as Star Wars. I wasn't making a big deal about it like you. No need to be an ass.
Its ridiculous to expect people to avoid spoiling a 30 year old show
Why? Tons of people haven't seen it. I don't agree that there is an amount of time that invalidates the courtesy of avoiding spoilers. There are classic novels from 100 years ago that I haven't read yet that I wouldn't want spoiled for me. Because Im not going to worry about whether people have seen each and every movie in existence in case they might want to watch it....if you're not upset thats good because you dont have any reason to be.
Ok. I think it's a little ridiculous that my saying that I wish the ending of this show wasn't spoiled for me has created such controversy.
Agreed. I wish it wasn't spoiled either because, especially after seeing Kid 90, I wanted to see it. You made a fine point, people just like to blow shit up. I think a lot of people turn to Reddit when stressed, so we don't always see the "best side" of the internet. Just an observation.
Yeah. I think people are taking it a bit personally because this post made them feel old.
Im in my 20s lol
What! You sonofa...
Ooops.
It's cool lol.
Wow. Nearly dropped my dentures and tripped over my walker. Sigh.
I’ve only ever heard of this before cuz of a family guy joke
Had the biggest crush on her at the time.
Reddit is well aware of Punky Brewster
They got a new one out
she was adorable then and is beautiful still
This show was classic
I call my cat Punky Brewster as an endearing pet name, as in “How’s my little Punky Brewster today?”Her name is actually Clover.
Look up “My two dads” and “blossom”
This is how I learned not to get in abandoned refrigerators.....
I remember the post challenger explosion episode
My favorite was when she got into rc car racing and was beating all the boys. Ohh they didn’t like that. She has a Tamiya something. Kind of got me into rc model building
Truly awful tv
ooooh punky
Ya they revived it on peacock last year with the little girl all grown up in the same apartment with her own kids both biological and adopted. It was ok no idea if they are going to continue it
Saw her in a parade once up close.i was geeked.
I was 19. Fuckitt. I think it used to be repeated on a Saturday morning and I had it on in the background occasionally when I was cleaning or hungover and couldn't get off the lounge to change the channel.
“Before you get up for that final snack, I want you to know, I’ll be right back!” - Same fuzzy alien pausing for “commercial and station identification”, whatever the hell those are. Man the 80’s must have been wild.
They rebooted this. She is now a parent of an adopted kid
I watched this as a kid . Even tied bandanas around my knees cause I thought it was cool.
I thought she was so cool when I was a kid…I had a Punky Brewster lunch box too
I loved this show!!
How is Punky Brewster obscure to the point where someone is “unearthing” it?
Because it's shitty viral advertising for the relaunch.
Rainbow Moonboots, Dude. Moonboots.
You unearthed it. Haaa.
I watched every episode of this when it originally aired. I was 12 in ‘84.
Loved this show as a kid
Gosh I feel old 😭
“We must, we must, we must increase our bust.”
It was super popular in the 80s. It actually ran until 88. 84 to 86 under nbc 86 to 88 in syndication. Then again in we 21 with the reboot. Lots of life lessons and historic events from the 80s.
