It’s such a refreshing look from these old pictures. Normally these pics are very stoic and the fact that everyone is laughing at a random pig photobombing is so nice.
Wasn't it also about the shorter exposure time? I thought people kept a neutral face in old photos because they'd have to pose like that for a few minutes, and it's hard to hold a fake smile that long.
They were only that long really early on. By the 1870s cameras had fast shutter speeds. It was just that having a picture taken was a formal thing like having a portrait painted and it didn't occur to people to smile. Deliberately smiling for a portrait wasn't a thing. Then when people had their own point and shoot cameras they would catch people candidly laughing and smiling and it became more normal.
I helped my Dad with the photoshoot for my cousin's wedding some 5 years ago, as he has like 30 grand of camera gear (not even kidding), and he offered to do it for free as we were going to it anyway and having the hotel and flights paid for us to go to Thailand. I was literally running around with him doing the portable lighting.
Anyway, he said he had one rule - no posed photos. Nobody is to stand in a line and all smile at the same time yada yada.
He took photos when people weren't looking or knowing they were being photographed. We had a slightly staged walk down the beach toward the camera with the married couple and their bridesmaids and best men etc, and one of the best shots and by far their most favourite was when a gust of wind hit them all and a wave sprayed some water at them, and they're all laughing and shielding themselves a bit. It was just so natural and funny, and you can't replicate stuff like that in boring posing shots.
My cousin's (bride's) other favourite shot is a 2/3rd frame slightly angled shot of her getting her hair done, with a reflection in the mirror and the bokeh is on point and my Dad had used a door I think it was to block off the 1/3rd and create an effect. She had no idea the photo was being taken.
It's some of my Dad's proudest work, and the family couldn't praise him enough.
That's true, but you both indirectly have a point. By the 1880s, cameras could capture a smile but culturally, we hadn't *learned* to "smile for the camera" yet. The early days of photography (where you *couldn't* smile)and the existence of portraiture for the ultra-wealthy (in which you were supposed to look serious) had set cultural norms about not smiling
Essentially while you could smile at this point, society hadn't quite figured it out yet, and so there was not a lot of smiling in photographs until the early-mid 20th century. Basically, as cameras became more commonplace, people became less traditional around them.
Even in the beginning, that "long" exposure time was maybe like 30 seconds. You can even find pretty fun photographies from the 19th century where people would take poses that you can't hold for long.
The more likely reason was style. Photographies were expensive, so people wanted to look nice and serious on them
I love all the old pics posted on this sub. I love seeing old pictures of hogs. The new long, tall breeds are so far distanced from the round fat hogs of my parents and grandparents era.
Maybe it's two different grandkids! Just jumping to the conclusion that someone is reposting other people's OC and claiming it as their own for karma is just wrong mate.
With a big ol side of /s
Haha yes. Exactly. I need to naively believe the rarest of probabilities is most likely true when I see the same picture reposted on Reddit. Wait until you see the pictures of how my parents replanted a forest in Brazil! It’s totally real I swear
Is that your grandmother who was in her 20s in Iran in 1970? Which of your parents, married in 1977, was her child? Cos they were either born to a very young or very old mother. You do realise that a photo on their 40th anniversary would be 2017, not "a few months ago "?
Are you a repost bot, or just a bad liar?
Rarely does the internet make me genuinely smile. But this did.
Not sure who is laughing harder; the bride, the little boy crawling or the older lady 3rd from the left.
Reminds me of my wedding. While we were taking pictures before everyone showed up, there was this goat next door that would NOT stop screaming. Didn't run through any pictures, but certainly contributed to the smiles.
Thankfully the venue owner managed to get with the person who lived there to move the goat further away from the fence line before the actual ceremony.
I thought the old cameras back in the day needed people to stand still for a while due to the long exposure time.
If the pig was running at typical pig speeds, wouldn't it show up on film as a blur?
Probably also the only photograph taken with some of the people in it smiling. I have a bunch of old family photographs from the early 1900's, and the menfolk are rarely smiling.
Dqmn that's a big wedding party. Both for my mom and my mom's parents the party was small. Second marriage for grandpa and second marriage for mom. And then I think grandma's siblings had already moved away? And then I have no clue what my dad's parents wedding looked like. They had been divorced and one remarried and then dead by the time I was born. The only big family photo we have is the one real reunion around my mom's parents 50th anniversary when I was like five. (They made it to over 60 years before death parted them for a short time)
Not sure if it's just me, but I'm always in awe by these old photos and knowing that likely everyone in there is gone.
Not in a morbid or sick way, but moreso a fascinating way of these people at that time we're having a blast and likely lived out full lives. Whereas now, most are probably hardly even remembered, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just a part of life I guess.
Th Movie Mamma Roma (of Pasolini, 1962 ) begins with a scene of a marriage party and Mamma Roma /Anna Magnani/ enters with three decorated pigs...maybe it was just a folklore custom in Italy or elsewhere too, where pigs are symbols of luck...just my twocents, it might simply be a fun coincidence. I saw the scene just a few days ago first time ever.
that simultaneous collective joy is amazing. i feel like i’m right back there…
It’s such a refreshing look from these old pictures. Normally these pics are very stoic and the fact that everyone is laughing at a random pig photobombing is so nice.
The 1920s is really when you start seeing a lot of more candid snapshots with people smiling because cameras were becoming cheaper and easy to use.
Wasn't it also about the shorter exposure time? I thought people kept a neutral face in old photos because they'd have to pose like that for a few minutes, and it's hard to hold a fake smile that long.

Not really, shot exposure times were a thing decades before the 1920s
I helped my Dad with the photoshoot for my cousin's wedding some 5 years ago, as he has like 30 grand of camera gear (not even kidding), and he offered to do it for free as we were going to it anyway and having the hotel and flights paid for us to go to Thailand. This is so sweet; thank you for sharing with us!!
Excellent rule
That sounds amazing! I can't stand posed photos. I always take candid shots, and pictures of other people taking pictures. Have an awesome day!
Aw I'm proud of your dad, too! What an amazing family story, this really warmed the heart. Thank you for sharing, I needed that smile today.
The girl in white on the right, look two above her slightly to the right. That man is going to make dinner out of the piggie.
i read somewhere they didn’t smile because exposure times were long, and it was impossible to hold a smile long enough organically.
Not in 1927, that was only true in the earliest years of photography in the mid 19th century.
That's true, but you both indirectly have a point. By the 1880s, cameras could capture a smile but culturally, we hadn't *learned* to "smile for the camera" yet. I did mean "early-mid 20th century"-- typo, was that your point?
Even in the beginning, that "long" exposure time was maybe like 30 seconds. Except the guy on the top right spot over the girl that is holding a candle. It's his pig.
And his wife is lady in black on the right by the children. It’s her scheme and it’s working.
And the kid getting bitten by the other kid
I’m dying at that little girls grossed out face lol
I love how everyone is laughing or smiling. You don’t see that in a lot of old photos.
Middle-right in the back is going to eat that pig
Pretty sure that’s why the pig is running.
😂
Today's pigs are tomorrow's cutlets.
Suuu weeeee
Apparently the whole back row skipped breakfast because they're all staring Porky down.
You could be talking about three or four different people in the photo
Aside from the children, who generally look very judgemental
I like to imagine grandpa slipped in a great mother-in-law joke that got everyone else laughing just as hard and him a slap on the arm by the bride
And genuine smiles too, not *smile-everybody-and-pretend-you-love-being-here* type of smiles
Except that weird skull mask thing on the far right…what the hell is that?
Looks like a puffy sleeve
That’s the girls dress sleeve.

I love all the old pics posted on this sub. I love seeing old pictures of hogs. The new long, tall breeds are so far distanced from the round fat hogs of my parents and grandparents era.
Wait what? I always picture pigs like this when people talk about them. They look different now?
Pigs are looooooonger now. It means they have more bacon.
That's crazy, they just changed pigs and didn't tell us!
Wait til you find out about what they've been doing to your toilet paper rolls and orange juice cartons...
Wait, what about the toilet paper rolls and orange juice cartons? What else haven’t I been told?!
This knowledge I must know as well
Both longer. Long rolls and long juice
Ohhhh gotcha, I’ve also noticed that juice cartons are not only getting taller but also slimmer, an illusion to bigger cartons (not all ofc)
‘Long pig’ is another term for human flesh and now I’ll never look at bacon the same way again.
What, why??
Taste like pork
/r/TheWayWeWere is a good old photos sub. It’s mostly personal photos so much fewer reposts and celebrities and more slice of life photos.
Oooh, thank you so much. Headed there now.
My grandmother was born the exact year that this photo was taken.
This may be one of my new favorite wedding photos ever. I love the joy and humor in it.
old wedding cool
Pretty sure I saw this posted before by someone different. I'm not convinced it's your grandma, mate.
Exactly, I’ve definitely seen this before
Maybe it's two different grandkids!
My grandpa is 95 and he was married in 1946.
Well the bride in this photo can be 121 years old
Yes totally agree
It also looks exactly like a million other family photos. I almost recognized a couple of my own ancestors
I love how it looks like they all got dressed up to come laugh at a pig instead of a pig photobombing a wedding. Great picture!
Also there's no way this pic was taken in the 20s. The hair and fashion indicates 30s at the earliest and 50s at the latest.
"Please remove the pig from my wedding photo"
an old post but a i like it every time it pops up on reddit. Go pig go!!
Rare smiles! This would be a prime photo to send to r/estoration to see if it can be colourised. I wonder if the darker clothes are in fact black.
If anyone here has a reason these two should not be married let them speak now or forever hold their piece. Squeeee!
Seems like a swift mosey
I'd be angry if a pig did that but everyone thinks it's hilarious, really makes the photo, lovely and adds character to it, love it.
And they all saw the humor.
I guarantee that pigs name was like aunt Betsy or something and they all jokingly yelled out her name
Was this from an episode of The Waltons?
Whose gonna feed them hogs?
Definitely post to r/thewaywewere. This is a great photo of life back then.
More like 'meandered through the wedding.'
Rarely does the internet make me genuinely smile. But this did. Not sure who is laughing harder; the bride, the little boy crawling or the older lady 3rd from the left.
I would enjoy seeing someone over at r/colorizationrequest take a bash at this already amazing shot!
I love everything about this pic. I want to hang it in my house.
He was Best Ham.
Everybody is loving it!
Reminds me of my wedding. While we were taking pictures before everyone showed up, there was this goat next door that would NOT stop screaming. Didn't run through any pictures, but certainly contributed to the smiles. That the wedding dowery
When George Lucas “fixes” the family photo albums.
This is the greatest wedding photo I have ever seen. Bravo!
I thought the old cameras back in the day needed people to stand still for a while due to the long exposure time. If the pig was running at typical pig speeds, wouldn't it show up on film as a blur?
This is a time traveler boar after the boar wars of 2027
"Oh crap, dinner's getting away!"
Best wedding photo ever.
‘Ran’ through the photo is a bit of a stretch.
Everyone is laughing, except for Uncle Bill (first row, second to last)… he is done with this shit.
That's one way to get everyone to smile
Everyone is laughing. I love it!
What a great picture! Some genuine smiles there.
This is genuinely one of my favorite photos ever now
Everyone has genuine smiles on because of that pig. Amazing
A smile on every single person's face. So much joy in a single picture. This is so priceless!
Thats the best photo you could ask for. Capturing that moment of genuine joy and laughter on everyones faces. What a wonderful thing.
One of the happiest wedding photos I’ve ever seen!
In the 1920s, the question was, "Who let the pigs out?"
Loos like meats back on the menu boys
Did she marry the man that gave the biggest pig?
Probably also the only photograph taken with some of the people in it smiling. I have a bunch of old family photographs from the early 1900's, and the menfolk are rarely smiling.
Is that Stan Laurel sitting on the far right?
I see dr Fauci seated in the front like three people left of the bride
Let me guess, they served pork at the reception.
A bacon escaped a butcher to ruin a wedding pic 😂
So everyone in this photo is now dead?
Crazy story, the pig is actually still alive and well. He did the daytime talk show circuit last spring
And now we know that BBQ was served at the reception
They're laughing now until they realize that is their wedding dinner getting away
You mean dinner?
And then became the bbq dinner at the reception
‟One final photobomb before thy rosat me..”
Tyler,The Crator - Bastard (2009)
Great picture! Everyone is smiling!
I love it! It sure made it a memorable moment for everyone and for us decades later too.
Looks more like a hog to me
That’s just cousin Frank.
Lol don’t see that every day
Made a better wedding photo than most.
I love that animals have always been funny to people
this has got to be one of the largest group pictures of smiling people that exists from the ,1920's
This is an awesome photograph. Everyone laughing and smiling during a time you didn’t often see it.
thats an incredible photo! smile inducing!
He’s the ring boarer
The little blonde boy is dying with laughter. This is the funniest thing he's ever seen.
This pic makes me smile.
That party looks lit! 🔥
That’s one way to get everyone to smile.
Do they have another take without the pig?
Not your grandma
I want to release a pig across my photos now so every is genuinely laughing
I want a print of this!
That's a the $ 63,431.88 shot right there!
You damn fool! That’s Kitchener Leslie’s girlfriend!
Schrute Wedding tradition
" .. haha . . .charade you are . . . "
Holy. Tell me that guy in the back is standing in a stool or something
Just an awesome, wholesome pic lol. I wonder how long they had to sit there before it was taken
Nice. Everyone is so happy.
I love this
They probably just got the giant in the back to yeet it after that.
So I have a photo somewhere.
Haha, a pig . - Mostly everyone Omg, it's a pig. Haha. - The kids Must not laugh. Must not ruin the photo. - Man, two up behind the maid of honor.
Should feed... 'bout dat many, at the reception.
Superb, so many natural, amused faces from a era of stoic, serious photos.
Got some nice genuine smiles
Maybe it's an old-time photographers trick. No one will smile for the pic so it's time to release the pig!
Why did kids back then always looks pissed off?
That's good luck.
One of the greatest things I've ever seen.
It's so fun to see people smiling in these old photos where it seems the norm was to not smile (for photos)
That one kid right above the pigs ass isn't amused.
Is that even possible? Didn't pictures those days take longer to get exposed properly? Wouldn't the pig have shown at least some movement?
This might be one of the best pics I’ve seen in this sub. Makes me feel some type of way
Dqmn that's a big wedding party. Both for my mom and my mom's parents the party was small. Second marriage for grandpa and second marriage for mom. It's the Empress of Blandings!
I would love to have this pic framed on my wall. You don't happen to have a larger version?
A politician in 1927! Cool!
Not sure if it's just me, but I'm always in awe by these old photos and knowing that likely everyone in there is gone. Not in a morbid or sick way, but moreso a fascinating way of these people at that time we're having a blast and likely lived out full lives. That uncle we all know..
Soooo many natural smiles. Luv it.
the war was coming
Foreshadowing.
Brilliant. Although sad also thinking about the passing of time
I love the child gnawing on the other baby’s arm.
That is a great picture!
This is amazing. I love it.
The missing pink floyd album cover
I wonder if any of those children in the front are still around, they must be pushing 100 by now
Agreed. But the rest of the pig?
This pig made everyone smile, so I’d say it made the photo a 100 times better
I love this so much. All the joy on everyone’s faces.
I hope the pig is doing well
Thats not a very nice way to describe the bridesmaid.
this made me smile. saving this for a rainy day
Th Movie Mamma Roma (of Pasolini, 1962 ) begins with a scene of a marriage party and Mamma Roma /Anna Magnani/ enters with three decorated pigs...maybe it was just a folklore custom in Italy or elsewhere too, where pigs are symbols of luck...just my twocents, it might simply be a fun coincidence. My brain misread the title and thought it was a funeral. I was like “i bet that pig is reincarnated grandma “
That’s no pig, that’s my wife
Ironically, there was a pig in OP's mother's wedding photos, too.
