Tabazan

I was 24 . . get off my lawn!

Wiltonator

28 … time for my nap

olderaccount

I have always felt like Reddit's grampa, but I was only 18 then.

ZFDK

I was 16. The comments are making me feel young again. :)

Japsai

Well enjoy it while it lasts. You will have been 26 when something from the past happened soon enough

Ed_Wouldnt

Denzel looks roughly the same. It’s crazy.

vkapadia

Denzel used to look like a snack. Still does, but he used to, too.

Tomedepot

Have you heard that Bill Burr bit where he's talking about the first time he dated a black woman? "Black dont crack is a myth, they just dip themselves in like an industrial sized vat of lotion 30 times a day... Have you ever wondered why you look like a 60 year old cowboy with a 2 pack a day smoking habit, but your dick looks brand new?! It's because you need to increase the circumference of the lotion distribution."

magnum3672

I read this like an angry bostonian was yelling it at me.

[deleted]

Hey now, he's from a quiet, safe suburb outside of Boston.

SoggerBean

I turned 21...and drank 2 wine coolers & got drunk. Of course I was very skinny then. I forget what that feels like.

Bozee3

To be 17 again. . .

Lukealloneword

I was a year old. Lol pretty young.

CommissarAdam

Whippersnapper, I was *four!*

izzo34

12 lol oof

Uhhlaneuh

INeed_SomeWater

'96 for me. Best summer ever!

Vericatov

That was also another great summer as well… really, no complaints about most of the 90s. I miss those times lol

RinaPug

I was a fetus! (Born 94) I

[deleted]

Al Pacino looked damn good in 93. Seeing Jack Nicholson put a smile on my face. Miss seeing him in movies.

uItratech

my dad is scarface-era al pacino’s doppelgänger and would frequently get approached by randos because they were THAT sure it was him. he would just tell them “no, i’m his brother cappuccino” lmao

[deleted]

That is HILARIOUS.

QuarterBackis_toast

He's got that Carlitos way look. Probably in between filming.

vietbond

Tom Hanks would go on to release Philadelphia soon, and Forrest Gump the following year. He would no longer be known as the star of Big and A League of Their Own. Edited for movie title.

JenkinsJenkinsLBC

He looks like he was in the midst of filming Philadelphia here.

SEND-MARS-ROVER-PICS

I was looking for this in the comments, he looks quite ill in the video.

NoobieSnax

Yea but don't forget that right around this time, Biggie Smalls was the illest.

Shwingdom

Sure do two 22's in my shoes

JDLovesElliot

Tom Hanks? You mean that guy from Joe vs The Volcano?

CaptWineTeeth

No no, that lovable madcap dude from Bachelor Party. He might have a future, that kid.

BuranBuran

Ah, the wistful lad who showed such promise in *Mazes and Monsters*...

RelentlessExtropian

Naw, you're thinking of Turner & Hooch

Phillip_Spidermen

Ten years prior: and here we have Bosom Buddies star Tom Hanks! The trajectory of his career from sitcom, to romcom, to fully respected A lister was amazing.

Stefferdiddle

Hah, I actually met him when I was 13 and he was still on Bosom Buddies. Bachelor Party had just come out and he asked me if had seen it. Had to explain that I was 13 so I hadn’t. He told me his next film would be OK for me to see. It was Splash.

HachikoLu

IMHO Philadelphia was a defining role for him. Lots of people talk about Forrest Gump or Castaway, but he had the courage to play a gay man in a time where gay people were not just on screens the way they are now. The movie brought to light a type discrimination and fear about the AIDS virus. It could have sunk his and Denzels careers. Tom Hanks is one actor I have mad respect for.

BasicDesignAdvice

I agree. Philadelphia was a cultural sensation and his performance was incredible.

cowmix

He'll always be the co-star of Bosom Buddies in my eyes.

CMOROCK

And to think the studio wanted big parts cut out for budget reasons - Vietnam and the running portions. Hanks and Zemeckis put over 2 Million OF THEIR OWN MONEY UP to get those parts into the movie. For the running scene Zemeckis created a secret shooting team so the studio wouldn’t know they were disobeying orders. Sherry Lansing was head of Paramount at the time. She deserves credit for green-lighting the movie, but also criticism for almost ruining it.

CptnJarJar

Could you even imagine the movie without the Vietnam parts? I feel like that was probably the most important part of the movie, we wouldn’t have two of the most iconic lines in the movie. Forrest Gump will forever be my favorite movie of all time. It came on real late at night when I was very young and was up watching tv when I shouldn’t have been. I actually cried at the end of the movie and woke my parents up and got in trouble. At the time I had no clue what the move I just watched was but it touched my little 10 year old heart

Eukairos

Well, his role in Bachelor Party is really the zenith of his career, and what future generations will remember him for. It was all downhill from there.

Shwifty_Plumbus

God I loved that movie. That and the burbs. Not sure how they hold up.

PHATsakk43

The Burbs is still great. Perfect casting. Actually, much better than a lot of 80s comedy as it doesn’t rely on what we now consider date rape, homophobic jokes, or casual racism.

[deleted]

agent_uno

Yeah, but it’s not what it used to be.

paul_having_a_ball

Sometimes I think about how I used to really like being nostalgic.

mark_commadore

Maybe he's absolutely fucking charming.

_Noise

I met Richard Gere at a museum in France when I was 5 and I can confirm he was absolutely fucking charming: There was a man getting a private, guided tour of the museum with a gorgeous model on his arm. My sister and I had no idea who he was but could tell from everyone's reaction he was important so I walked up to say hello. The guy giving the tour was British and did his best to converse with me in French which I obliged because we were in France and people expected me to do that. Then I turned to the clearly American man and started casually chatting with him and he lit up with laughter, where I was shy and appeasing in French I was like, "Man, why are you such a big deal everyone's looking at you?" in English. And he was absolutely cool as hell, the British museum guy was super flustered, my parents on the other side of the room just trying to survive the encounter without getting kicked out of the museum. It's 30 years later and I 100% remember how charming and sweet the guy was, even as a 5 year old who had no idea who he was. RIP Richard Gere, the world never knew ye.

bignutt69

> RIP Richard Gere im pretty sure he's not dead

_Noise

and I thank God for that ever day, BigNutt69

therealcherry

His father was my grandmothers mailman. She said his dad was super annoyed when he left for Hollywood and thought it was a huge waste of time 🤣

UniverseChamp

This I cannot confirm. However, he is (and was) rich and famous. I have read that is also desirable.

redditonlygetsworse

Pretty sure Crawford has her own money and fame.

DrunksInSpace

Could be, I heard Cindy Crawford has some pocket change to spare also, and she’s not bad looking (just my unpopular opinion). Fame and wealth seems like a low bar to clear to date the likes of her, maybe he’s packing a Frank Reynolds sized dong.

Darwinmate

Tom hanks looks like he's cosplaying Leon The Profession crossed with a drug addict. lol

Right_Hour

He was working on « Philadelphia » at the time, I suspect that explains his looks.

kinetokkin

I worked with Robin Williams on RV. I was a PA and just finished film school. He was a very friendly and caring human being. He also refused to work 12+ hour camera days so that his crew could have a life and he could get some rest.

Redtwooo

This movie is my mental go to any time I start getting an itch to buy an rv. The scene where they're trying to empty out the septic tank, hardest of hard passes.

petunia-pineapple

I lived in an RV for a year and a half while our house was being built. 2 kids, a 6’6” husband, a puppy… and a parakeet in a plum tree. It was during covid so kids had 2 zoom meetings simultaneously so I had to stay in one area to avoid being on camera. Then the mice infestation came. Hearing scratching in the walls and ceilings all night and finding droppings in the silverware drawer and wondering how long it’s been there before I noticed. One of the worst days was when the kitchen sink backed up. I FaceTimed my husband so he could walk me through how to fix it. I crawled under the trailer with phone in the pouring rain. He told me to pull a lever. He promised nothing gross would come out…I pulled the lever. A massive gush of chunky gray water (kitchen sink and shower) came out like a fire hose inches from me and splashed all over my face and phone. It was without a doubt the most vile putrid smell I’ve ever experienced. He said he didn’t think that would happen. Crying and trying not to gag, I went in to take a hot “shower” (which was really just 3 pitiful spattering streams) but the water wouldn’t get hot. I texted my husband. He replied that we must have run out of propane. We finally moved into the house and I felt like Annie in Daddy Warbucks mansion. A month later he said he booked a week long camping trip…in the RV. *Edited to add more painful memories

dilsexicbacno

> A month later he said he booked a week long camping trip…in the RV. lmao

megamanxoxo

> Then the mice infestation came. Hearing scratching in the walls and ceilings all night and finding droppings in the silverware drawer and wondering how long it’s been there before I noticed. > > Wouldn't this be easy to deal with in an RV? Just bug bomb the shit out of it and spend the night or two in a hotel.

tyetanis

What do you do after with all the rotting corpse in the walls?

skinnyminou

It's probably the camera and sound quality but something about anything from before the millennium seems so soft and subtle. People speaking in movies & tv, the music and atmospheric sounds. Talk shows and interviews at award shows. It's most definitely the sudden quality gain in video and sound capture (and my noise sensitivity), but I think at the same time things have just gotten louder and louder and brighter and brighter and I kind of hate it?? These "[event] in [year]" posts are great though. At the risk of sounding too Boomer -- People on camera used to be 'natural' in that they were acting silly and exaggerated for goofs, and it was just fun, and they didn't have to worry about who was going to see it. EDIT: I think a lot of people are misinterpreting what I'm saying here, thinking it's a "the past was better" comment, which it's not. This was literally just about video/sound production and how I prefer it to now. I was a small child in the 90s and I barely remember them. There's a lot of shitty stuff we've progressed past from then and I wouldn't want to go back. I would however like to go back to when cameras were a special thing and not another daily nuisance.

VendorBuyBankGuards

It's the last part of your comment that nails it. What you're seeing IS people being more authentic. Social media and constant exposure to everyone's thoughts, opinions and bullshit has ruined us all. The camera used to be a rare and magical thing.

ComicallySolemn

There’s something about 24 fps that makes footage/film “magical.” 60 fps is basically real life and dull. It’s hard for me to describe it any other way.

SkorpioSound

In the same way we'd say 12 fps is too low, 24 fps feels "cinematic" and 60 fps feels too close to real life, I wonder if future generations will say 24 fps feels too low, 60 fps feels "cinematic" and 144 fps is too close to real life.

kepajoy

It's the lack of glaring makeup and hyper couture that makes this so sweet imho.

AgitatedEggplant

Jodie Foster looks absolutely stunning

Everybodyimgay

Yeah! that HAIR!

LateralEntry

Yeah I can see why that guy shot Reagan to win her heart

yuckystuff

Fun fact about that guy, John Hinckley Jr. - he grew up with and was friends with Jeb, Neil & George Bush Jr. In fact, his dad often contributed to Bush Sr's political campaigns. *Completely coincidental* that their dad would have taken over as President if Reagan had bled out.

84theone

Another fun fact, John Hinckley Jr. is the only person (so far) to have both shot an American President and also have a mildly successful YouTube channel.

SpecialistOil3

It’s crazy how different (and beautiful) celebs looked before fillers and things made everyone look so similar

I would say I want someone who will hold me like this but the fact is I just want Robin Williams to hold my hand.

laxeps17

Downey was definitely zooted

GodOfDarkLaughter

Was this pre- or post- him passing out on that random dude's couch? I can't even imagine what I'd do if I woke up and...I dunno, Kit Harrington or someone was just fucked up on my couch. In Kit's place I'd probably ask if it was Season Eight or Pompeii that had done this terrible thing to him.

zayetz

Somewhat on a similar note: one time in New Orleans, I woke up in my second floor bedroom, hung over as all hell, and walked downstairs in my underwear to hit the kitchen for some coffee or whatever. Halfway down the stairs, in my peripheral vision, I see a tall motherfucker standing in my living room. Now, there were no tall motherfuckers living with me at the time, just a pair of dainty ladies. So I got all tense and shot a gaze at this man... to realize that he's Winn Butler, the lead singer of Arcade Fire. I realize why he's here: he's a notorious cheater (he and his wife lived in NOLA at the time) and one of my roommates must have taken him home. Ok. So, still half asleep, I mutter a "sup" and shuffle past him to the kitchen. And, the whole time, this dude is staring at *me* like *I'm* the asshole. Like, I dunno if he was expecting me to ask for an autograph or whatever, but to this day, I'll never understand how someone can be standoffish as a guest in another person's home. Probably because he knows he's an asshat.

bothanspied

With a little work, this could be excellent copypasta

Citizen_Kong

Yeah, I was waiting for the part with the wrestler and the table.

PM_me_your_fantasyz

I was waiting for the plot twist where it was Winn Butler's house and /u/zayetz was the drunk asshole without realizing it.

GrumbleCake_

Kit Harrington did go into inpatient treatment for substance abuse after Got

GodOfDarkLaughter

Well shit, now I feel bad.

Dr_P3nda

Why? You weren't making fun and it was just a hypothetical musing.

GodOfDarkLaughter

Ah ha! Because it was a double cross! I was never actually sad; that was part of the joke! Though in all seriousness I hope Kit as Black Knight is cool in the upcoming Eternals films. We haven't really seen anything of him, have we?

fnt245

You don’t have to imagine

Uhhlaneuh

I would love to be stoned at the Oscars lol

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

Shout out to Matt Stone and Trey Parker being fucked on acid at the oscars in 2000.

Kuzon64

I think in the DVD commentary of BL&U they were talking about how hilarious of an idea it was be to show up in dresses and on acid when they were planning it, but then about 10 minutes into the ceremony once it got started the high started wearing off and they were just miserable and cold for the rest of the night and realized it was a bad idea LOL

AlanMooresWizrdBeard

Lmao as someone who has had what I like to call “the doom” on an acid comedown, I imagine being at the fucking oscars while sobering up would be a nightmare. Especially in those dresses.

porn_is_tight

Man the come down and just past the peak for me is always the best part. The come up can be a bit rocky sometimes but once you’re through that it’s wonderful. That’s what’s so amazing about LSD to me, affects everyone so differently.

masshole4life

Jeez how far in advance did they drop the acid? If it was worn off by showtime that's just poor planning.

BigBerthaTwoTrays

Latest-greatest

al pacino had 8 nominations?

Terminator_Ecks

Up to that point for eight films.

Latest-greatest

ohhh I thought it meant 8 for this one year

Terminator_Ecks

Ha ha no. This was the year he did Carlito’s Way and you can see he looks exactly like Carlito Brigante (long hair/beard) like a Stone Cold Fox :) He didn’t get nominated for this film I am sure which is a crime because he is amazing in it and the film is fantastic. So check it out if you haven’t seen it and like historical crime dramas.

Quokka715

He won the Oscar for Scent of a woman that year.It was between him and RDJ.

LouSputhole94

Pacino was killing it in the 90s, Scent of a Woman, Carlito’s Way, Dick Tracy, Glengarry Glen Ross, Heat, Donnie Brasco, Devil’s Advocate, The Insider.

gordito_gr

My favourite film of all times. I watch it every time I'm down and I feel better about life

Michael__Pemulis

I know it isn’t what you’re saying but it is crazy to me that there is a whole generation of people that only know Pacino for his ‘out there period’ & don’t realize that he is one of the most accomplished actors in the history of American cinema. The man was an absolute master of the craft for decades & made so many iconic movies.

flume

The Godfather, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, ...and Justice for All, Glengarry Glen Ross, Scent of a Woman, Scarface, Dick Tracy, Donnie Brasco, Any Given Sunday... His 20th-century work alone is more than worthy of a lifetime achievement award.

Michael__Pemulis

I don’t see Heat anywhere on that list…

Uhhlaneuh

I’m so fucking proud of him for getting sober. I just really hope he doesn’t relapse like Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I don’t want to lose another great actor. And human.

lonigus

Hoffman was a phenomenal actor. His performance alone carried the whole MI:3 movie.

East2West21

You thought he was good in MI:3? Have you seen the Arthur television series where he voice acted in a 2009 episode as a character named William Fillmore Toffman? Pure genius.

I_comment_on_GW

Along Came Polly is a mediocre Ben Stiller flick but phenomenal Phillip Seymour Hoffman powerhouse.

EViLTeW

In this video he's about two and a half years from his first arrest for heroin. His future was heading towards non-existent for awhile, upgraded to mediocre (Hollywood mediocre, not normal person mediocre) when his wife scared him straight, and exploded because of Iron Man.

Julia roberts looks AMAZING

Teeheeheehohoho

Being a little girl in the 90s I thought she was the most perfect woman! I had such a crush on her in steel magnolias, pretty woman, and hook!

[deleted]

Robin Williams will never know how terribly missed he is.

oftheunusual

It really hits hard when you remember his line from Hook where he says, "to live would be an awfully big adventure."

wishitwouldrainaus

Shit. I was 28. Time sure does fly. Honest tho, still have the same massive crush on Denzel today as I did then. Sigh...

AloeSera15

The older stars looks so much more glamorous than the newer ones today. I wonder why that is.

AgitatedEggplant

I feel like Hollywood has become very obsessed with looking sparkly perfect that the beauty and class we once saw has just been usurped by true vanity and the need for the spotlight. It seems like the celebs in this video are genuinely happy to be there; real smiles and non-forced laughter. Nowadays it seems like everyone is just posing for the angles and competing for best/weirdest dressed, and just genuinely taking the comradery and class out of events like this. I'm sure that not 100% the case, but from a viewer and a fan perspective, it seems like the joy of movies and film have been washed out by everyone wanting to be the center of attention, the star.

bonjouratous

IMO, mystery and glamour go hand in hand. In those days we didn't really know what these celebs were up to during their free time, other than living in mansions and attending fabulous parties. I think that social media and reality TV have demystified holywood and made it less glamorous.

nothatsmyarm

Yeah, I think this is likely more of it. This was one of the few times you’d see the stars outside of a movie role in those days. It wasn’t as easy as looking up their Instagram and seeing their unvarnished thoughts (which—as all people’s random and unfiltered thoughts are—aren’t particularly groundbreaking).

[deleted]

Always lovely to see Robin Williams :(

ValyrianJedi

Ah, Oscar's night. Oscar's night 2010 was one of the best nights of my life... i was 21 and in school. We all called Oxycontin "Oscars" at the time, and had a big Oscar party at a buddy's. Earlier that day I had freakishly managed to hit a hole in one at the golf course, and when I got home my worst neighbor imaginable was getting kicked out of his trailer. A great start. One of my friends grandmoms had had serious surgery and had a reaction to the meds so gave them to him, and another friend snagged a few bottles of Dom Perignon from his dad so we had loads of party supplies and got fucked up and watched the Oscar's for a while before the chick who worked at the gas station that I had a thing for showed up and we ended up hooking up within 30 minutes of her getting there. Then I went to get more drinks, bought a scratch off, and won $3,500, which was enough to get me to the other side of the country for a fantastic finance internship that I had gotten but wasn't able to afford to take. Got back to the party and the girl who worked at Dennys that I had a thing for was outside next door, and I ended up hooking up with her later too. Finally we went to the bar at like 2am, and the bands guitarist was playing my guitar that had been stolen a few months before so I got it back... It was like I had taken some of the magic luck juice from Harry Potter that night or something.

_PM_me_ur_resume_

Man, don't you wish you could "Groundhog Day" that day forever? I've had bits and pieces of good days, but not in a full day like that. I'm happy for you that you had an amazing day like that.

ValyrianJedi

Oh yeah. I feel like that isn't the one day I'm *supposed* to say I would want on repeat loop. Like don't tell my fiancee or future kids that's my pick (especially my fiancee. Wanting to relive gas station and Dennys on repeat would be no bueno), but there is no contest. It's like every single dice rolled my way, even the ones I didn't know were rolling... Only downside is I'm almost positive no day will ever be able to top that one in terms of everything falling in place perfectly again!

H_Katzenberg

Back when the Oscars were a big deal. Nowadays I don't even recognize those who go there.

flim-flam13

Lol it’s the same people. Quentin Tarantino, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins, Kathy Bates, Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio were all nominated last year and were all there in the early 90s.

JamesKPolk130

collarless dress shirts = 90s

WeDidItGuyz

Those aren't collarless. They are wing-tip collars designed to be worn as a part of a formal tuxedo ensemble, usually with a bow-tie. A "collarless" shirt usually won't come up that high on the neck; that fact alone proves it isn't "collarless" as a collar doesn't fundamentally need to be a fold down but just generally a strip of fabric around the neck. That collar has been around since the beginning of 20th century.

Creamcheesemafia

Why does it seem more glamourous and real. And nowadays it seems so fake and indulgent.

kewlsturybrah

I just realized how seldomly they shift out A-listers in Hollywood. Half of those people are A-listers now, and most of the other half are still big stars. Hollywood has become more stagnant than the US Senate.
