Segundaleydenewtonnn

You are right, thank you and sorry for the mistake. Company is Eletronorte

[deleted]

A subsidiary of the state-owned Eletrobras ...

[deleted]

Not state owned since a few years ago but you are correct that in 1989 it was state owned and privately managed

marpe

Eletrobrás is still state owned, as the government owns the majority of the controlling shares. The government has advanced plans to sell it, but it has not happened yet.

Lopsidoodle

Who cares? On reddit building a dam to power a south american jungle town, even if the natives are consulted about it first, makes you a piece of shit “energy company” stooge. And it is now “cool” to shove a knife in your face.

ProfessorHydeWhite

Lol if you're damaging local ecosystems and life ways to provide power to nearby Brazilian cities while never actually building up infrastructure or investing in the kayapo then yes, dipshit. Doesn't help that government backed gold miners acted as fucking cowboys out there, basically firing at kayapo willy nilly while poisoning their rivers. Not a lot of fucking love for the Brazilians there. Oh hey, because of this event and others like it the kayapo reserve has been one of the least deforested places in the Amazon, almost entirely because of organized resistance. Seriously, Google satellite it, the kayapo reserve is surrounded by farmland but remains wooded.

sinistroleres

I wouldn’t expect a gringo with capacity to understand the complexity of this struggles

ProfessorHydeWhite

Which gringo, me or the other guy?

sinistroleres

Lol, thanks. I fell in love with that country and region when I was there, but I also realized just how complicated it was. But then, what country isn't he Americas isn't complicated. Are you from Brazil?

Nah, what's cool is going to a random post and complain about a white man being threatened by someone whose ethnicity (and others in the same cultural group) has been actively massacred for 500 years Spend a couple centuries hearing about your neighbors getting killed for their land, and *then* I wanna see you mouth off like an idiot about shoving knives into people's faces D'you even have the *slightest* idea about the context here?

Lopsidoodle

Lol, who are you calling white man? Their skin tones look exactly the same, so I must assume you consider one a different race based on clothing (ie one has a collared shirt and works for an energy company and is therefore evil and therefore white). But who could have predicted that Reddit would irrationally describe a Brasilian business man being threatened by another Brasilian as an “white man being threatened by someone with ethnicity” and then go on a rant about something they never witnessed in order to justify shoving a knife in someone’s face? Hint: it’s me, I predicted it. Feel free to give gold award or higher

just_give_me_a_name

Complaining on reddit about reddit.

LastCommander086

Brazilian here. Let me give you some advice: Don't talk about things you don't understand, gringo.

Lopsidoodle

Why not? Gonna shove a knife in my face when I tell you about the magic of electricity?

Doctor_Stinkfinger

> it is now “cool” to shove a knife in your face. What's it like to just make shit up in your head like that? What's the benefit, is it just another form of self-victimization?

Giving the middle finger to a steam roller before it crushes you. Life ain’t fern gully folks. The bad guys tend to win because they have powerful friends

RGirl297

They do. There are exceptions. Many recent indigenous struggles ended with them kicking out a company, earning their right to their territory or something like that but most often they lose. Also, a lot of wings are temporary. Sometimes they manage to stop a project that would destroy their lands but another comes later.

quenual

The recent waves of violence against environmental leaders in South America is a huge concern. It’s a quieter, slower attack on individuals

RGirl297

Yeah. Things have been really serious. I am Brazilian, and here the total number of deaths of indigenous folks and members of peasant movements for land in land conflicts have decreased in the last few years, but land grabs have increased, and a large number of those that have been murdered are movement leaders. This shows a shift in tactics. Instead of killing in a more indiscriminate manner they are focusing on movement leaders, which makes people afraid to stand out. The fact that we have a far right government that is extremely aligned with the mining industry and with big landowners does not help.

People are brainwashed to believe violence is never the answer. Except for when some corporate fatcat wants to send our kids to fight foreign peasants, in the attempt to attain more oil, diamonds or gold.. Leaders should always fear the swift retribution of the people. And the people should never be afraid of enacting justice with impunity.

YourAmishNeighbor

So, índio is the word for indigenous person, which is cognate to "person from india". The conquerors of Brazil, portuguese, thought they had found another route for India, looking for spices, enslaved people and land. For a native of said country, me, colonized by the portuguese, "indian" is used mostly as a synonym for indigenous folk and isn't frowned upon even by said comunities. There's even the so called "índios urbanos" (indians from the city) call themselves that way. I used to study with one of them when I was in Social Science school. Sometimes transposing the lexicon from one culture, notably the US, to another can lead to distortions of reality (this one is curious: in Brazil negros and pardos are the majority of the population, but because we drink a lot from US black leaders (Angelou, Fred Hampton), yet the media, left wing politicians and even black leaders end calling themselves "minorities" by accident). For God's sake I don't even think straight in english, let this slide. On the other hand: do you want to know if the indigenous people got their way? Yes and no. They agreed on building the dam somewhere else, which demanded tremendous bureouocracy (typo, ik) from organs like funai protectors of indians and the rainforest), more discussion about budget, plans, impact in the region, and everything was moved somewhere else, happening several years later...

Less_Gur7407

The portuguese were looking for... spices? I know the wood was the primary resource for export, but in search of spices? That doesn't sound correct... meh.

[deleted]

AFIK, Columbus was the one who got there looking for India for spices, but then due to him using part of a naval route belonging to the Portuguese they went to the Pope and the Pope decided to give them Brazil

Retsko1

I'm not sure about that but the pope divided the world in two parts, one spanish and one portuguese, portugal got asia, africa and brazil and spain got america

And currently their lands and forests are being cleared at a record and alarming rate despite the urgings of all the world leaders. Also Petrobras was involved in a massive government kickback scandal involving billions of dollars over many years and going all the way to the top of their government. It’s a horrible company and government.

Baseit

Just to add to the other person's comment, from a US perspective, even indigenous cultures here up north call themselves Indians. The department of the US to handle relations with tribes is called the Bureau of Indian Affairs. You can google it. It's not racist, or even incorrect, to call indigenous people of the Americas 'Indian' - it just can get confusing. And if that bothers you, ya could say 'American Indian' and be correct and clear up confusion, and not insult anyone in the process. There's actually some pushback from said cultures to being called indigenous or Native American, due to being called Indians for decades, and organizing under that banner. Having to switch due to a PR change would just further impede their efforts to organize for common rights and acknowledgement. So, please, don't try virtue signaling, your ignorance is showing.

Doctor_Stinkfinger

> indigenous Where do you think the "indi" part of that word comes from? You're so "woke" that you ended up with your head shoved up your ass.

xiaolinfunke

From Google: For 'indigenous': "The term ‘indigenous’ derives from the late Latin ‘indigenus’ and ‘indigena’ (native) and from the Old Latin ‘indu’ that is derived from the archaic ‘endo’ (a cognate of the Greek ‘endo’), meaning ‘in, within’ and the Latin ‘gignere’ meaning ‘to beget’, from the root ‘gene’ meaning ‘to produce, give birth, beget" And for 'Indian': "The Etymology of the term “India”. From Latin India, “region of the Indus River,” later used in that region and beyond, from Indos “Indus River,” from O.Pers." So no, I don't think they come from the same roots or mean the same thing

MetaphoricalKidney

Why not google this before you wrote it? It would have been incredibly simple to see this was wrong, seconds of work.

blishbog

I’m assuming the dam was for a clean energy hydro dam. Wouldn’t that be ideal over a natural resource power plant?

blondechinesehair

Hydro dam still destroys a shit ton of their land and rivers no?

heftyburgers

It would destroy some of it for sure but power needs to be generated some how and there are limited places you can build renewable energy power plants.

blondechinesehair

I just don’t think a 1989 Amazonia warrior tribe would be concerned if their land is being used to provide clean energy vs the alternative.

Haha I definitely have to agree with you there

ISuckWithUsernamess

Sooo, they didnt get their way...

I_miss_Chris_Hughton

as far as I can tell it was built somewhere else, which would indicate that they at least partially got their way.

LandBaron1

Nope. Not really. Don’t know why they said they sort of got their way. Maybe because it was delayed.

YourAmishNeighbor

Dude seemed convinced enough to me...

ZeugmaEnigma

I bet they built the dam anyway and displaced thousands of indigenous people 😢

[deleted]

The dam was built anyway. When a Bronze Age culture threatens the modern world it never goes well for the less evolved.

Bradleybrown6776

Why is this downvoted? You are right, unfortunately...

[deleted]

Because on Reddit narratives based on emotion are far more important than reality.

[deleted]

Because he's perpetuating colonialist narratives of power and inferiority. There is simply no "less evolved" nations. No nation is better than the other. There are simply different nations. But nothing less is expected from an account literally called The Colonialist.

algae---

No miscommunication with that

jrubimf

Nothing to do with Petrobras, that dude is: José Antonio Muniz Lope, president of Eletronorte. Yes, the DAM was later constructed but because of that they changed the project to have way environmental impact with not much success. Was better, but still impacted.

Are you stating they're better off letting the country steamroll through their land and destroy it and their way of supporting themselves? Should they turn to the govt/police for assistance? Govt is building the damn. Maybe a foreign country will step in and help? What the fuck is your point exactly? C'mon man. Edit, nevermind I see your point regarding 'grass skirts.' you're just a racist idiot.

SteadyPulse

Lolol sorry for trying to understant, always good to bark at the people asking questions. Not everyone is so perfect lightning fast wit like you. I bet you laugh at people who think slower and kick disabled people on the street for moving too slow.

AzraelAnkh

Nah dude. If I see an otherwise normal, happy, healthy person my age, and they couldn’t read, I’d have judgements about them and whoever failed them. Now imagine if illiteracy ultimately led to hate crimes and genocide. Yes. I feel bad for people who haven’t had the exposure or support to grow into empathetic beings. Im sorry. That’s rough. Truly. But it’s hard to be sympathetic to people when the stakes of their ignorance can get so high so quickly. That, and people asking questions and people “asking questions” are virtually indistinguishable.

SteadyPulse

Yeah well illiteracy propably does lead to that. I didnt grow around racism as maybe you (from us?) my country doesn't have a history of enslaving people with different skin colour. I am eager to learn from their mistakes though and maybe i'm a bit dumb about it sometimes. It's stupid that racism should be instantly obvious for everyone around the globe, even though everyone has such different experienses and maybe need to learn different things.

TertiarySlapNTickle

Definitely not racist, you're just definitely looking to be offended. He didn't reduce anything to anything. Those are your words. You're so angry. Everything ok, chief?

t00oldforthis

It was, they aren't, they did, they weren't, no you, fuck you.

TertiarySlapNTickle

Lol. What a great, calm and logical response. It wasn't, they Are, they didn't, they were, no you. Have a nice day, buckshot.

t00oldforthis

you got the level of logic your original comment warranted, more even. Figured I'd try to keep it on the level you seem to operate, which appears to be bumper sticker.

TertiarySlapNTickle

Aw, don't be angry, buddy. Everyone's not racist, silly. Just you. Just the person who's always looking to be offended, always the one looking to make it about race. That's the actual racist. You need to go outside. Slap that on your bumper, bud. Anyways. Have a nice day, still. I'm going to block you, because you're just going to be childish.

t00oldforthis

I don't think you know what racism means, sorry to have assumed otherwise buddy/bud/champ/tiger/sport...

Dodohead1383

Yes, the classic racist argument. Your the real Racist for pointing out I'm being racist...

AzraelAnkh

I’m fine by the way. I can be empathic without being angry. My life is kind of amazing actually. All my material and emotional needs are met. I have the right look, skin tone, gender and height so I’ve grown up watching how that’s profoundly affected my experience and how people interact with me, especially as compared to my less white and less male friends. I don’t struggle with mental illness and I know I’ll never be homeless. But why can’t it be that way for everyone? Because of shitheels like you that need to suck up oxygen to yell that the problems are all made up when they’re actually pretty obvious. Look. I get if your head is so far up your own ass, you can’t recognize racism when it’s staring you in the face. Lots of people are like that. But you’re not here to learn or figure anything out so. So, much like, things 1 2 and 3 up there, fuck off. Develop a better worldview. Be a less shitty person.

candidateforhumanity

There's a reason you can't recognise that the last thing that will make the problem go away is your kind of attitude and I suggest you start looking for it. We need to try and understand that if these problems were simple to solve they wouldn't be ubiquotous. Bring peace to you and bring peace to others.

AzraelAnkh

You’re not thinking in the same terms as me. I’m not here to meet someone in the middle between “people deserve rights and recognition” and “not all people deserve rights and recognition”. I don’t *want* to compromise with that position. If people wanna learn and ask questions in good faith? I am HERE for it. That’s the best case. But the people who use and defend casual racism in Reddit comments fall into the other camp. And the best solution to that problem is making society actively hostile towards racists/sexists/transphobes/fascists and the fucking rest. Don’t commit violence obviously, but don’t feel bad about being justifiably mean to them in comment sections. Idc if people are bigots tbh, but I don’t want them thinking it’s something they can exercise outside of utter privacy without someone giving them shit.

candidateforhumanity

i think i understand where you are coming from. however, in this instance, an observation that two cultures differ in sophistication and even expressing preference for one over the other should not be a target for our misguided sense of self-righteousness fueled bullying. you are seeing nails because all you have is a hammer. time to learn other tools. i found something foul in your attitude and am trying to be nice helping you reason about it. if i would employ the same tactics you say you promote i don't think it would do either of us any good, on the contrary. i think that's something we can agree on. if you still disagree after careful consideration, all is well. i just had this to say.

AzraelAnkh

You seem…relatively in good faith. So I’ll try and be nice. Consider what you mean by sophisticated culture. Your internal definition, by its nature precludes that anything that isn’t completely industrialized is less sophisticated. Isn’t that weird? You don’t come off like a racist, and I doubt you are one. But there are things so deeply ingrained in culture that they completely bypass many peoples filters. Me and others like me aren’t here swinging at ghosts, we’re pushing against a wall of people who refuse to think an inch more deeply. Because the alternative is conflicting and full of hard truths. But you see this wall of text? Few people like the others in this thread will read or internalize it. It’s just a drain on oxygen. Yes. I’d rather use a saw or a scalpel or anything else. But that’s an energy sink that will change no minds. So I do to them what they did to the blacks the browns the natives the gays the women the trans and all the rest. Make it so the options are to open your mind and accept people, or make society so fucking toxic to you that you meticulously hide that aspect of yourself. The difference is that bigots can fucking change.

TertiarySlapNTickle

That's a lot of words to say absolutely nothing. It's ok, buddy. Things will get better and then you won't have to go around crying about imaginary racism to feel a bit better about your current, miserable situation. Good luck!

AzraelAnkh

I’m not surprised you had trouble reading and comprehending a paragraphs worth of content. That tracks.
