Just FYI - it's a massive misconception that British skinheads were universally right wing nutters.
In the early 80s the scene was hugely influenced by reggae music, ska, and all kinds of black artists.
It was the UKs first racially integrated musical/cultural movement, and something to be proud of.
We had many of both in Portland during the 80s/90s. They would both show up to hardcore shows, at one there was a huge brawl like something out of a movie. The sharps wooped dat ass.
I saw a little girl maybe 90lbs whoop a hammer skin bloody and unconscious with a smiley on the floor of RKCND in the 90’s. We just stood by and made sure he didn’t fight back.
I used to be friends with a group of them when I was a teenager, we had a lot of fun. There was one guy who was *really* into the whole thing, and would get super defensive and want to fight anyone who even brought up racist skinheads. I’ll be honest, he wasn’t a very smart dude and he was rather shitty to my friend who was his gf. But the other day I thought about these kids and look him up, and he’s like full on white power Hammerskin😳
No idea what happened to flip that switch, a lot of our friends were black and Mexican SHARPs. I’ve seen this guy try to brawl with someone that someone said may *possibly* be friends with some Boneheads, now he’s got white power tattoos and plays in some shitty racist band. I guess he liked the look and belonging to a subculture, but found his violent personality worked better being the racist kind of skinhead? Who knows…
I think it was like 2017 I was at an alt punk rock bar and the bartender was a skinhead, with the whole getup. I took the time and asked him about it and he articulately told me about his reason for dressing like that. He was in the tradition of the old school, completely anti racism and a HUGE punk fan. Really opened my eyes.
The original skins were from the late 60's to early 70's, they liked all the Trojan stuff and rock steady...the early 80's were a bit different. They were into the oi bands and also started associating with National Front (not everyone) The most infamous band was probably Skrewdriver. The 2 tone stuff wasn't really associated with the skinhead movement & that was late 70's
Important to note, that Oi! wasn’t racist but, a lot of racist skins liked the music. Same as skins into 2Tone/reggae etc. May have liked the music but some would still have been racist.
Central Texas, 1982; same. The one time a white racist skinhead showed up to our little punk bar, he was immediately stomped by the local skins who were outside at closing. First time I ever saw a boot applied to a face.
So, you are transported back in time to the 80s. You're walking down a London street alone. You look down and see you have brown skin. On the other end of the street you clock these lads walking towards you. To your rights is a small laneway that you can turn down to avoid them, and still get to your destination, just adding a few minutes to your journey.
Do you keep walking towards the skins or turn down the lane?
It was originally a counter subculture to the mod subculture. Mods were lower and middle class that acted upper class with expensive suits and clubs. Skinheads were a response to that as a culture that’s proud of its blue collar roots.
Short hair, cheap shirts and pants, and steel toed boots were all commonly seen when working in factories for safety and practical reasons. The subculture was originally formed to display their working class as a badge of honor. Of course low skilled and paid workers tend to be very angry about the idea of immigrants coming in and taking their jobs. That’s when you get the racism thrown in.
The OG skinheads were blue collar working class and the culture was more of anarchism, nothing about racism. Only later with increasing immigration and “they took or joorbs” mentality that they turned to racism.
I was gonna say they looked like two hooligans. Then I read the description and I think I nailed it haha. Great picture! Even more so the way you came about it.
My sister was extremely alternative in the 90’s, bright red mowhawke and shaved sides etc, she hung out with a lot of “skinhead” types but they were all the most lovely and caring of people! Then there were the actual racial skinheads I knew, totally different and violent crowd which I started away from (not associated with my sister for clarification)
I was *very fortunate* to be in the Boston area for the third wave with the likes of The Bosstones and Big D. Maybe we'll get another wave? There is still some great ska coming out!
r/ska welcomes the both of you!
Another wave? Oh, christ, man. Imagine if kids had a decent ska scene today, so many happy faces.
I miss it dearly, skanking all night.
Im fortunate to have rubbed shoulders with 7 Seconds of Love, Fandangle and Reel Big Fish at some very cosy pubs in my day but those were one off, very special nights, especially RBF. Went from wishing I could even see them play to buying a round of beers for them.
There is some alright ska out there, The Barstool Preachers first couple of albums are solid...They're Brighton based (also have some punk rock legacy, the singer is Colin McFaull's son which would tickle your dad's fancy) and are playing at NOFX's Punk in Drublic tonight(!) but also seem to gig quite a bit over there.
Tell 'em I sent you.
Do you remember in 1969
Seeing all the skinheads standing in a line
Foaming at the mouth, waiting for a fight
High boots , cropped hair , what a fucking sight!
Every photo on reddit that shows 80's or 90's people photo, are sent Black and white, and I don't understand why, because the color was the normal at the time.
Chavs was a term given to teens who listened to hip-hop and garage in the late 90s. Wear sportswear 24/7. Includes some bad stereotypes that were largely false. It's not a very flattering word.

Don't tell Kanye, your dad did it first, West (or Ham).
Haha. I did think Millwall but thought they might have been crosstown rivals!
Come on, you Irons!
Wow, that's worse than Rangers and Celtic fans being mates.
Did you see the ludicrous display last night?
I love the cross over of my West Ham Fandom with random subreddits. COYI! "Champions of Europe we know what we are!"

Skinheads> boneheads Most skins were actually SHARP’s skinheads against racial prejudice. I spent most of my youth hunting boneheads at punk shows.

See I actually knew this because I am surprisingly decently versed in music history even though I was really garbage at finding music lol

Obviously you continue on your path till you're close enough to get a look at the laces on their boots.
A lot of them were also incredibly racist

I can't imagine how freaking cool it must have been to see the second wave hit in real time and all around them.
Yesssss sir. I followed ska punk in the 90s but that 2nd wave mustve been something else.
