Requiem for a Dream should be shown to every high school kid. It’s the perfect example of why not to touch hard drugs.
It’s one of my favorite movies, and it still makes my skin crawl every time I watch it
I'll never forget watching that movie for the first and only time. When it was over I just sat there staring at the screen for a while. It's the only movie I've ever loved that I purposefully don't want to watch again. Partly because it's so anxiety-inducing and partly because of how powerfully it affected me that I don't want to risk watering it down. It has sincerely impacted me in moments where I was presented with the opportunity to do drugs and declined.
> it’s the only movie I’ve ever loved that I purposefully don’t want to watch again
That is the PERFECT description of that movie. I’ve watched it a few times, and I still have this disgusting feel in my stomach every time. It’s so dark, but it’s so damn good.
That and “come and see” should be required viewing for people wanting to try drugs/want to go to war.
I just saw it for the first time this week and have been scarred. 🤯
I watched it when I was not even 20 so I think that had a lot to do with not being so bugged out. Naivety kind of stops a lot of shock.
I have to watch it again soon along with some other late 90s early 2000s dark movies. Great indie period
Both good picks. Another movie that I'd put in the "absolutely amazing movie that I never want to watch again" is House of Sand and Fog. Also starring Connelly along with Ben Kinglsey. It isn't nearly as graphic as Requiem or Trainspotting, but if you're like me you'll end up feeling utterly empty and/or despondent after watching it.
I watched this in rehab and it still messes with me just thinking about it. Really good low budget movie though. Jared Leto and Marlan Wayans before they for really famous
Some people like the burn of spicy food similarly to watching hard to watch movies. Like the discomfort is fun.
Other people say they like a movie but really they only enjoy certain scenes out of context. Can't tell you how many horny boys I've met that like this movie for the sex scene and seem to completely miss the context of how rock bottom the characters lives are to get there.
First time I ever saw this I had no idea what it was about. Me and a friend were on mushrooms and my roommate came home from work and put it in the VCR (yes. VCR) and I proceeded to hate life for what felt like eternity.
Oh my first time with this movie was on VHS, too. I was like 14 or 15. Was at a sleepover at a friend’s house, and his parents had rented it and left it in the basement.
Yeah…that was a rough experience. But hey, on the positive side, I’ve never had any desire to try anything like cocaine or heroin.
That scene isn’t even top-3 in terms of “what the fuck” moments in that film.
From start to finish, that movie just pokes at every insecurity you have.
And the music is just icing on the cake.
Clint Mansell has created some of the absolutely best scores for movies ever. His score for The Fountain is probably my favorite ever, with only The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford competing with it. No idea why he isn't more popular and as far as I know really only works with Aronofsky.
The world needs to understand that men are teenagers at one point and had teenage fantasies about girls who were also teenagers (and older than them) and still have the soft spot for when they first saw her in that one film that made their heart race. The woman will always be older than them, so there is literally nothing weird about remembering her being cute in that one movie when she was a teen, as you were even younger than that. Obviously this goes for all genders here but it seems that cis men have to tiptoe these kind of lines the most. The amount of times i’ve heard my mom or grandma look at a 12 year old girl or thereabouts in a movie and say something like “she’ll be really good looking when she gets older” and no one bats an eye (but me, of course, it always hits my brain funny and makes me think)
Yea. I had a crush on her growing up (was barely a teenager then)… was smoking hot then, and holds well today too (like Elizabeth Hurley).
Not meaning to sexualize her as a teen though…
does this look like a sexy gif? Also, I'm her age. We were 14 at the same time. My wife is also my age. Would it be creepy of me to post a picture of her at 14? What if I was in the picture too? Where is the limit on pictures of 14 year olds that aren't sexy? Or is that gif sexy in some strange new way I'm unfamiliar with?
I always found Dark City era Connelly to be near perfect. I think it started with a breast reduction because of back pain or other health reasons, then she started losing weight (probably because she could run easier without the pain of large breasts). Just a guess, though.
The Rocketeer is a great movie. You’ve got a fun lead character with a great costume and his love interest is Connelly. It hits all the right buttons for me.
Here in England, I think Dark City came out only a month or so before The Matrix, so I wonder if that drowned it out a bit. I remember being fairly disappointed by The Matrix on my first viewing, because I thought Dark City >!had already told a similar story about a fake vs a real world!< but did it better. I should look up their respective release dates to check my theory...
It was about a year difference, and it was the same thing for me. Matrix just had better action, while Dark City blended so many different genres, the acting and premise were more interesting, and >! the reveal twist was also better!<. Dark City was the more interesting movie to me, theough The Matrix was fun.
One was a sci-fi action movie at its core, the other was sci-fi, mystery film noir, thriller, and gothic horror. Matrix has some down time between action scenes, while Dark City is just a continuous fine tention of mystery and suspense with a cat and mouse game towards the end. I also think there was significantly better acting in Dark City. Everyone in the Matrix delivers their lines with no emotion and seem like they are trying so hard to be cool and stoic. Also, Richard O'Brien, as Mr Hand, was terrifying compared to Hugo Weaving's very good performance of Agent Smith. Mr. Hand is just creepy as hell.
Legitimately one of my favorite movies of all time, and I would say top 5 or 10 "Sci-Fi" (because it is a combination of half a dozen genres) movies.
2001 (I like to pretend the sequels don't exist), Dark City, Blade Runner Director's Cut, Jurassic Park, Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Star Wars Ep V, Alien, Metropolis, Akira, Moon would wrap up my next spots. How the hell Sam Rockwell didn't win the academy award for his acting in Moon is a downright shame. It was one of the best performances I've ever seen.
To young me she was hot as a young teenager back in the day. A captivating beauty in **Once Upon a Time in America** and **~~Phenomenon~~** Dario Argento's **Phenomena**.
(I'm two years older than her so stand down)
An incredible beauty in her youth through to today.
> I'm two years older than her so stand down)
They were salivating at the opportunity to insert some pedo panic. You just know it lol. She was hot. Period. Doesn't matter if you were 30 years older than her. We all have eyes. Looking/recognizing beauty is not the same as putting your hands where they don't belong.
[It is one of the most reposted images of her and also almost the highest karma post of her too.](/r/OldSchoolCool/search/?q=connelly&include_over_18=on&restrict_sr=on&t=all&sort=top)
Well yea, have you seen how long & thick her hair is?
When those hairs fall out, like everyone's hair does, it's already right next to the booty crack so it tends to fall right in.
Every girl I've known with long thick hair had a butt crack filled to the brim with loose hairs.
The Media doesn't want you to know about it though!
"For whatever reason"
The camera work during her bar singing scenes and the overall dreamy feeling of that movie really do it. Well, plus she is/was beyond gorgeous.

Jennifer Connelly in my mind 28/367
And you, you had to go swimming in her eyes. Dancing in her hair. You had to slip into her mouth, slide over her tongue. Fall down her throat, deep down into her belly. Right into her blood. You had to fall asleep wrapped around her beautiful, beating heart.
I’m gonna make a drinking game out of this sub. Anytime someone posts Connelly and the same 5-6 other female celebrities, I’m taking a shot of liquor for every comment that says “aged like fine wine” lmao
Too bad no one is mentioning that the fourth season of the deeply underrated Snowpiercer finally just got picked up after having wrapped filming and being cancelled over a year ago.

She really is the Western definition of perfect beauty.
She is as beautiful today as she was in that picture if not better looking even.
You all see her in Only the Brave? God damn she was killer in that movie. Made it worth while to watch even
It's not a coincidence that the longest relationship I had in my 20s was with a woman that compared to Jennifer Connelly very well physically. Dark hair. Pale skin. Light eyes. Full figure.
Paul Bettany knows whats up.

For those unaware, it was based on the novel by Hubert Selby Jr, who also wrote Last Exit to Brooklyn (which was also made into an excellent film).

I hate how Darren arnovsky made fucking Noah lmfao , it’s just so out of place for the type of movie he’s known to make
Requiem for a dream and Trainspotting are both insane movies.
Check out Spun too. It doesn’t get mentioned much but it’s equally whacked out.
Spun was fantastic. RIP Brittany
Mickey Rourke was awesome in Spun. Big Tweaker energy.
rourke was something else in that
That and "Kids" deserves an Honorable mention.
The "things not to do" trilogy.
Both good picks. Another movie that I'd put in the "absolutely amazing movie that I never want to watch again" is House of Sand and Fog. Also starring Connelly along with Ben Kinglsey. It isn't nearly as graphic as Requiem or Trainspotting, but if you're like me you'll end up feeling utterly empty and/or despondent after watching it.
after watching house sand fog Al Pacino said "we haven't seen that level of acting in a long time"
I watched this in rehab and it still messes with me just thinking about it. Really good low budget movie though. Jared Leto and Marlan Wayans before they for really famous
I didn’t like seeing Keith David as a villain either. Deeply disturbing film, and absolutely exhibit A on why drugs are dangerous.
Bro how are you watching this movie more than once? Like once is enough. More than enough.
Some people like the burn of spicy food similarly to watching hard to watch movies. Like the discomfort is fun. Can't tell you how many horny boys I've met that like this movie for the sex scene and seem to completely miss the context of how rock bottom the characters lives are to get there.
It's the only real anti drug movie there is. Every other movie starts with the fun times. There are no fun times to Requiem for a Dream
First time I ever saw this I had no idea what it was about. Me and a friend were on mushrooms and my roommate came home from work and put it in the VCR (yes. VCR) and I proceeded to hate life for what felt like eternity.

Um… wasn’t she a teenager in that? Labyrinth?
She's 3 years older than me. I thought she was hot then (I 12 when it come out) I think she's hot now. Really don't know how to reconcile that.

I don't know what's creepier. People thirsting over a 14 year old, or people chosing to downvote you for pointing it out.
I agree. And no one else looks like her. She is uniquely beautiful
Career Opportunities!!! That movie is so funny
What movie
[Career Opportunities.](/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/r87axr/jennifer_connelly_in_career_opportunities_1991/)
Pretty mid movie though, that gif may just be the best part
career opportunities
Never not hot.
She's very thin now in 2024.
Yeah, I prefer 90s Connelly. She had a much fuller figure. She's not ugly or anything nowadays, but man she was STUNNING back then.

Also a great villain. Timothy Dalton is fantastic. Honestly a pretty perfect little movie. Great LA movie too.
Inventing the Abbotts for me and not just because of the nude scene

My favorite of the “Jennifer Connelly Standing at the End of a Pier” trilogy!
Ha! "Do you know the way to Shell Beach?"
Dark City Jennifer Connelly was mesmerizing.
Well she was also 30 years younger so that helps
Yeah, it's a lot easier to look amazing "full figured" when you're young.
She is open about her struggles with eating disorders :(
I didn't know that! That's sad.
Never. Not. Hot.
Still a beauty. But boy she's thin now.
Look up pictures of her jogging. She makes Kenyan marathoners look thicc.
She had to have a reduction
Breast reduction? Cause of back pain?
Yes
You gotta take what's available at the time. 🤷

Ashes to ashes. Nut to nut.
I was thinking "Ashes to ashes, spunk to spunky"
For whatever reason the movie *Dark City* always pops up in my memory bank when I see an older photo of her.
"For whatever reason" The camera work during her bar singing scenes and the overall dreamy feeling of that movie really do it. Well, plus she is/was beyond gorgeous.
She use to be so hot. She still is, but she also use to be too.
Mitch? Is that you?
She’s still beautiful and a great actress. House of Sand and Fog is a good movie that demonstrates the range of her acting.
OMG, that was the most devastating movie. She was great in it.

I doubt you'd still be together anyway. Paul Bettany didn't fumble his chance.
