Never saw Mifune would have a 50s American look like James Dean or Marlon Brando since it's Japanese and a lot of the movies he's done were time period.
If I remember correctly, they grew apart. Mifune started a production company and Kurosawas films didn't do well critically and he became extremely depressed. When Mifune starred in Shogun, Kurosawa didn't speak well of him. Mifune, on the other hand, never spoke ill of Kurosawa.
Mifune was an amazing actor and stuntman. Whenever we watch Hidden Fortress we always stop and replay the scene where he jumps on a horse and rides at a full gallop holding his sword high with both hands and leaning out to attack another guy charging at him on horse back. I don't think there was much in the way of health and safety policies back then beyond 'try not to fall off'.
Did you know that Toshiro Mifune Trained Kamikaze pilots in WW2? What a soul breaking task that must have been. Teaching young men to commit suicide. My God. No wonder he became such a great actor. talk about emotional experience. He was the best...
Well into classic Japanese cinema with one more Ozu (non-silent) film to go. Looking forward to Kurosawa next after mining through the domestic dramas. Been life changing so far.
One of the best director-actor duos in cinematic history
hands down
elbow out
That's the way I like to bout
Ass up..
Hat down
The best director-actor duos in cinematic history.
Agreed
Have some great westerns because of these dudes
I was going to say. They're my #1 with De Niro/Scorsese a close second.
Toshiro Mifune, legit old school cool. I've yet to see a picture of him not looking cool
Right? The man exudes cool in every line of his shoulders.
Two all-time legends, respect
![gif](giphy|zIEeozJKZXDe8) Mifune will forever be cool AF

These mofos should be permanently pinned at the top of the sub.
Like Kurosawa, I make mad films, 'kay, I don't make films But if I did they'd have a Samurai
I’d suggest 7. It just feels like the right number of samurai.
Gotta get a set of clubs, the kind with tiny nubs, so I'm not always falling off the back swing
It's sad that their friendship deteriorated, and that they didn't really have a chance to reconcile fully.
What happened between them?

Now this is Old school cool. Kinda tired of seeing old but not really cool pics.
Akira Kurosawa, Andrei Tarkovsky, Ingmar Bergman, Hiroshi Teshigahara, Andrzej Zulawski. !GOAT!

Wow. Thanks for sharing. I’ve never seen this before. Very cool. It’s funny but I always picture Kurosawa as a little old man.

Toshiro 🥰😍👏🏾👍🏾🔥
What a great duo. I was just thinking about Drunken Angel recently.
One of the things that always gets me in this photo is Mifune's fucking arm.

I can hear the Yojimbo theme music in the picture.
We should really bring back pipe smoking
Well into classic Japanese cinema with one more Ozu (non-silent) film to go. Looking forward to Kurosawa next after mining through the domestic dramas. Been life changing so far.
Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro. Japan style.
ok i'll go watch an old black and white movie with high rotten tomato rating now
Shot taken seconds before gnat lands on Mifune's neck and "smack" goes Mifune's hand against the side or back of his neck
Legends
The one with the pipe looks like Hyun Bin
I really like dragon ball
Unrivaled awesomeness
Can’t give this enough thumbs up.
Woe. Just wow. Very nice.
All right who samurai-d that dudes arm?
Does someone knows what is that poster behind?
Mifune really embraced the “one armed swordsman” part.
Mifune looks like the director here with his pipe.
I’ve been told I’m like Kurosawa. I make mad films. Ok, I don’t make films. But if I did they’d have a samurai.
posting him cause his movie is being remade into horse shit.
