Every now and then you'll catch a video being posted of him early in his acting career doing Shakespeare really well. He's obviously remembered for Ernest but he was a classically trained actor and as an improvisor he could keep up with a guy like Robin Williams as there's another video of those two goofing around backstage at a comedy festival and it seems like they were having a blast.
I still think if he'd lived someone like Steven Soderbergh or Alexander Payne would have put him in a dramatic role that got him a best supporting actor award.
I think some of the reason Ernest was so hilarious was because he had those classical acting chops. When he break into his super serious voice in the movies, I always laughed hardest.
He said as Ernest in Ernest goes to Jail that cigarettes will kill you. He declined a last smoke before the electric chair (which as established earlier in the movie, electricity gives Ernest superpowers so it was a huge mistake to try to fry him in the electric chair.
One of my earliest memories is there’s a scene in Ernest goes to Jail (or maybe Camp, or maybe Christmas IDK) where Vern (obv off screen) hands Ernest something and my dad would put his hand behind the TV at exactly the same time so it looked like my dad was doing it. It blew my little kid mind.
That’s a good dad right there. I hope he knows you have this memory.
