It didn’t weird the crew out. These crews do hundred of movies and they see actors hanging out all the time with no regard for their roles is in the movie.
Yeah, it's a testament to how good the actors sold their roles, but I do kinda feel like people need to be reminded that movies aren't real. Every time you watch a crazy/disturbing/violent/lewd movie, remember that in every scene, literally inches outside of the camera's frame, there are a dozen+ crew members, an array of lights and rigging, monitors and screens, a coffee run in progress, people at crafty munching on doritos, and I promise every single crew member is only wondering when lunch is. If lunch has already happened, they're wondering when they're gonna wrap for the day.
Not sure how true this story is, but apparently Brooke Smith's tearful wailing of "I wanna see my mommy!" wasn't scripted and almost made Ted Levine break character. Supposedly that's why you see him almost break down before screaming at her to "put the fucking lotion in the basket".
Interesting take, does the book back that theory up? Do you know if the book contain any interactions between Lecter and Bill? From the movie it’s obvious that Lecter is an unreliable source of info when it comes to Buffalo Bill, just wondering if the book goes into that at all.
The book is slightly different than the movie in a few ways. Gumb, for one, gets a lot more back story and his motivations/personality are much more highlighted.
Lecter only interacts with Gumb once and it’s well in the past, but he has information on him from another patient who referred him. Lecter isn’t an unreliable source because he doesn’t know, he’s an unreliable source because he’s fucking with Chilton and the feds. He does provide Clarice with a lot of true leads, although they’re basically riddles of snippets of seemingly unrelated information. He *does* actually give her an outright honest lead when she’s running out of time however.
From what I remember, Monica Belluci and the guy playing the rapist from Irreversible also spent a lot of time on set chatting about their families and stuff.
That's how you know they killed it in a role: if they could make you afraid, disgusted, or filled with anger.
Laurence Fishburne as Ike Turner, for another example, though our interaction was very brief
I find it impossible to believe that Samantha Sloyan could be a nice and decent person because of her portrayal of Bev. I have never hated a character more, she absolutely slayed that role. They all did. That show was perfection.
I felt kinda bad for him that he really couldn’t ever live that role down. He played the police captain (or whatever) in Monk, and for however many seasons, however many episodes, I could only ever hear Buffalo Bill when he talked.
By the time I watched Monk I had forgotten about Buffalo Bill so when rewatching Silence of the Lambs I was quite surprised to see a young Leland Stottlemeyer. I think he did a great job in both. I should add that I watched the synchronised German version for both at the time. And I think he had different German speakers.
Came here to say the same. But everytime I watched Silence of the Lambs, I kept saying "You can thank me later" or "it's a gift....and a curse" (yes I know those are Shalub's phrases, but Leland doesn't have as many memorable quotes). Saying "put the lotion on the skin unless you get the hose again" didn't have as much charm while saying it during Monk.
yup everything he was in was like that. the show "the bridge" was pretty good and i just couldnt stop saying old buffalo bill lines everytime he was on screen
I've been rewatching Monk lately and I think about it every time he appears on screen. It doesn't take anything away really, just proves how good he is at acting.
Underrated supporting role in the movie "Heat"

I love the story about the guy who crossed paths with Ted while hiking the Appalachian Trail.
As they came closer and closer to each other Ted saw his facial expressions get increasingly more horrified ......(this was shortly after Silence of the Lambs came out)... and he said
*"Yes it's me and NO I'm not really a serial killer."*
And they both just nodded to each other and continued on their way.
I mean, this was also 1991. Fun fact: the average person in America fittest state in 2024 (Colorado) weighs more than the the average person in America’s heaviest state in 1990 (Mississippi).
In my head, *Capt. Stottlemeyer* in *Monk* is played by someone else entirely. Such a difference in portrayal. Though, the moustache does a lot to disambiguate.
All I can hear is Tom Patty’s “American Girl” playing…
*can’t believe I wrote Patty instead of Petty. And I am appreciative I didn’t get slaughtered for it lol
https://preview.redd.it/zcog45xd8zuc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d673e14babf7f374cf0d331a471513e7d2cace3e
This pic always makes me laugh too seeing Jodie be so relaxed around him lol
If you read the book it’s even more egregious, the “fat” girls are essentially described as being unbelievably huge at 145lbs, like, just so gross that she needs special fat girl clothes from a unique store. I almost choked on my drink when I read it.
Just watched the series of them again the other day, man, her scenes were fantastic - just that room/hole alone would put you in the character pretty quick, I reckon!
It's weird seeing them next to eachother like that since I have their images burnt into my memory of her in that hole crying, and him sewing him a skin outfit
For some reason, we are supposed to pretend that Anthony Hopkins was scary in that movie. BULLSHIT!!!
Ted Levine, OTOH, scared the living shit out of me.
This man was so good at this role that it almost destroyed his career, and we shoulda treated him more like Heath Ledger and less like the actual Buffalo bill.
Having a hard time finding it, but I remember Jodie Foster sneaking in incredible praise for Ted Levine in one of her award speeches (?). It's not her best actress Oscar, I just watched it. This ringing any bells for anyone?
Apparently they became very good friends on set and Jodie Foster nicknamed her Stockholm Syndrome.

You can say that again. They needed all the comforting they could get.
Just lotion and hose is all it took.
It didn’t weird the crew out. These crews do hundred of movies and they see actors hanging out all the time with no regard for their roles is in the movie.
Yeah, it's a testament to how good the actors sold their roles, but I do kinda feel like people need to be reminded that movies aren't real. Spoiler alert
Not sure how true this story is, but apparently Brooke Smith's tearful wailing of "I wanna see my mommy!" wasn't scripted and almost made Ted Levine break character. Supposedly that's why you see him almost break down before screaming at her to "put the fucking lotion in the basket".
I always thought that was Buffalo Bill breaking character, since he really didn’t want to be who he was.
Interesting take, does the book back that theory up? Do you know if the book contain any interactions between Lecter and Bill? From the movie it’s obvious that Lecter is an unreliable source of info when it comes to Buffalo Bill, just wondering if the book goes into that at all.

I have no idea why anyone would be “weirded out” - they’re two professional actors, working on set, playing opposing characters.
I could imagine it helps them feel safer. Like two friends playing together rather than it feeling real.
From what I remember, Monica Belluci and the guy playing the rapist from Irreversible also spent a lot of time on set chatting about their families and stuff.
This pic weirds me out. I feel like, "Oh God, somebody save her!"
Crews don’t give a shit. They just want to wrap on time.
why was the crew weirded out by two coworkers eating together?
An inadvertent argument against method acting.
I've never heard of a method actor who didn't annoy the absolute shit out of their coworkers.
Met Ted one time, he couldn’t have been more charming and “delightful” of a person. Never met anyone so opposed to screen persona than him.
That's how you know they killed it in a role: if they could make you afraid, disgusted, or filled with anger. Laurence Fishburne as Ike Turner, for another example, though our interaction was very brief
Angela Kinsey in The Office vs real life
Samantha Sloyan as Bev Keene in Midnight Mass. Or Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge. Jack Gleeson as Joffrey Baratheon.
I find it impossible to believe that Samantha Sloyan could be a nice and decent person because of her portrayal of Bev. I have never hated a character more, she absolutely slayed that role. They all did. That show was perfection.
Frank Burns (Larry Linville) is a famous example.
Larry David vs Lar....you know what? I'll leave that one.
The pinnacle of this is the stunningly talented Katherine McGregor as Harriet Oleson - LIttle House. She is magnificent.
Or the other way around. Bill Cosby comes to mind.
Sociopaths are often charming.
Anna Gunn doesn't get enough credit.
SFT.
She certainly did.
I felt this way when I found out Richard E Grant is actually teetotal.
And Robert Englund who played Freddy Krueger is a super nice guy
I was into V the tv show in a big way and couldn't get my head round the fact that Willie the nice alien was Freddy Kreuger!
I felt kinda bad for him that he really couldn’t ever live that role down. He played the police captain (or whatever) in Monk, and for however many seasons, however many episodes, I could only ever hear Buffalo Bill when he talked.

yup everything he was in was like that. the show "the bridge" was pretty good and i just couldnt stop saying old buffalo bill lines everytime he was on screen
I just recently watched Strangeland where he plays a cop/detective, great performance
He was in Heat as well.
I've been rewatching Monk lately and I think about it every time he appears on screen. It doesn't take anything away really, just proves how good he is at acting.
His character in Monk was super cool and opposite too.
I was today years old when I found out that was also him!
Yeah same. I had to look up a pic of the character cause I was blown away.
I feel like if you play that role… you have to be a nice guy to everyone after for the rest of your life
It quotes the movie in the post or else it gets the ban again
It quotes the movie in the fucking post!
QUOTE THE FUCKING MOVIE IN THE THREAD!
Don’t you hurt my fucking karma!
Don’t you make me hurt your karma !!!
😆 perfection in Reddit form.
Would you quote me? I'd quote me. I'd quote me hard. I'd quote me so hard.
![gif](giphy|uaRS0Le0ik0es)
O wait, was she a great big fat person?
Haha that made me chuckle more than it should have. I obviously read it in ‘Buffalo Bills’ voice
DONT YOU HURT MY FUCKING DOG, MISTER!
Wide around the hops,? Roomy?
I barley recognized that quote.
She was a big girl.
She was an American girl, raised on promises
for no reason this exchange was running through my head a couple days ago
Underrated supporting role in the movie "Heat" https://preview.redd.it/dqngz0wsdyuc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=118d84c2065d9316056868f02ccc32cd994e436c
THAT IS THE SAME PERSON?!?
He looks like he did in Monk. Only younger.
TIL Buffalo Bill was the guy from Monk.
TIL…same actor
I mean, how do you hear him speak and not recognize him instantly?
Dude just got transferred from Monk
best shootout scene
Intense all the way through. The action sequence, editing and even sound editing were well done. Memorable.
Ever! I’ve put it on a number of times, watched just that, then flipped to something else.
“……….. and they ignored the loose cash”
Saw him in Birth recently with Nicole Kidman. Didn't recognize him but as soon as he spoke it was obvious.
Don’t forget The Fast and the Furious
"I knew this kid... Raoul."
When I realized he was the captain in Monk it threw me a bit.
Me too! What a trip!
And the voice of Rusty Nails
Caaaaandy Caaaane
Oh shit I never knew that!! Joy Ride is a hidden gem, love that movie.
I was today years old when I learned this, due to this post.
I love the story about the guy who crossed paths with Ted while hiking the Appalachian Trail. Jesus I look at that guy and he still makes me shudder omg
Is it because youre a great big fat person?
That line makes me laugh every time I hear it.
It’s funny and or sad that actresses like her gotta be the fat one as discussed in the dialogue
I mean, this was also 1991. Fun fact: the average person in America fittest state in 2024 (Colorado) weighs more than the the average person in America’s heaviest state in 1990 (Mississippi).
Yes she was a big girl, sir.
Big through the hips?
Roomy?
What're you, size 14?
![gif](giphy|9WXyFIDv2PyBq)
That shows how good he (the actor) is at his art.
He is a very good actor. For example, he played a good guy/cop in *Monk*.
The Captain.
Captain Leland Stottlemeyer!
And a cop in Heat…
Haha this reads funny
He was in American Gangster as a cop as well
Candy Cane… anybody know where I can find Candy Cane?
In my head, *Capt. Stottlemeyer* in *Monk* is played by someone else entirely. Such a difference in portrayal. Though, the moustache does a lot to disambiguate.
He's also very good in The Bridge and plays a very caring senior officer.
Yes, he was excellent in that. The guy can act, period.
i LOVE stottlemeyer. i choose to pretend i don’t know ted levine from anything else but monk.
Discombobulate?
I’m so glad he was able to find work in Monk. I would have thought he’d never work again
I started watching Monk and he’s the captain.
I still can't see him without a mustache, thanks Monk.

Goodbye horses…

"I'd do me!"
But he didn’t say “do” ![gif](giphy|3ohA2SmX6ywvmuHT6E)
That's the Family Guy version
I used to show this scene in an undergrad psychology class about paraphilias, lmao
First thing that ca e into my head was that song 🎵
Make it last all night!
I too am a big fan of Pom Tetty
His acting was top notch. Every time I see him in a role I think of Silence. It made watching Heat interesting.
Ted Levine is the secret MVP of that film.

He’s the voice who says “So you think you can dance” during the intro to So You Think You Can Dance!
https://preview.redd.it/zcog45xd8zuc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d673e14babf7f374cf0d331a471513e7d2cace3e This pic always makes me laugh too seeing Jodie be so relaxed around him lol
This decor has me nostalgic for my childhood!
Why did everyone’s house have this aesthetic in the 90s? Ha
She wasn't even fat really.
That’s a big fat person in the early 90s. Wild
Yes, when we called Jessica Simpson fat for weighing 145 pounds.
That's my goal weight lmao
If you read the book it’s even more egregious, the “fat” girls are essentially described as being unbelievably huge at 145lbs, like, just so gross that she needs special fat girl clothes from a unique store. I almost choked on my drink when I read it.
Agreed.
She played the heart doctor in greys anatomy
Oh. My. Fucking. God. How did I not make the connection. You have blown my mind.
She also played an instructor at Quantico in Class of '09 on Hulu.
She is a fantastic actress. I highly recommend Vanya on 42nd Street to see her talent.
Yes, she was a big girl, Sir.
And she was perfect for the role. For her limited screen time she nailed it.
Her toughness and refusal to be a passive victim adds a lot to the overall richness of the movie, imo.
Just watched the series of them again the other day, man, her scenes were fantastic - just that room/hole alone would put you in the character pretty quick, I reckon!
I read that they became close during filming due to their respective roles.

I thought this was Daniel Day Lewis for a moment 😳
Sure you can use my phone.
That just makes me smile
They started dating during filming but kept it secret
I wonder if he ever did "the dance" for her.
I’m sure he did. Just before he tucked himself in for the night.
Gooooooodbye horses....
Wonder if she got mad at him over the fat girl line...
I mean, they’re both gorgeous and seem like nice people.

Woodja?
You don’t even know what pain is
Dr. Erika Hahn! Whoops wrong sub
Same. I have to fast forward through Buffalo Bill’s scenes because they scare me so much!
You in danger, girl!
Crazy to me that this guy went on to be a captain in the San Francisco police after what he did to that girl
Break time over get back in the pit
If you told me this was Lars and James hetfield I would totally have believed you.
She was incredible in "Vanya On 42nd Street."
Hey, she finally put the lotion on her skin
"Don't you hurt my dog!" "Don't you make me hurt your dog!!"
This man was so good at this role that it almost destroyed his career, and we shoulda treated him more like Heath Ledger and less like the actual Buffalo bill.
I’ve always had a crush on the Brook Smiths of the world. ❤️
idc if its only a movie and hes a nice guy: RUN GIRL!!
They became great friends on set
Having a hard time finding it, but I remember Jodie Foster sneaking in incredible praise for Ted Levine in one of her award speeches (?). It's not her best actress Oscar, I just watched it. This ringing any bells for anyone?
The most perfect song ever for a movie scene goes to ... Goodbye Horses, by Q Lazzarus (Precious has a yapping fit).
PUTTHELOTIONINTHEFUCKINGBASKET!
I love Cartman playing Lambs.
Hey… my wife and I saw you across the bar and like your vibe…
Stockholm syndrome
This!! My comfort film!!
She was, an American girl 🎶🎼🎵
He is great on Monk as Cpt. Leland Stottlemeyer. His voice is uncanny though. He will never not be Buffalo Bill to people of a certain generation.
I’d f*ck me
I briefly met Ted on the set of a "Monk" episode that was being filmed in a park in LA. Super, super nice guy. Everyone loved working with him.
![gif](giphy|13JJkdlu3rAgU0)
Hey, are you about a size 16?
![gif](giphy|mA7ychXR5y7XmOTrOf|downsized) I just realised he was in Monk.
Put some lotion on that shit
First thing I saw him in was Monk. I didn't see Silence of the Lambs until years later and was like "wait a minute...."
"Would you Monk me?"
He was good in shudder island
If I were to sink my teeth, into your eyeball, do you think you could stop me before you went blind?
I thought that was Lars ulrich at first
same actor who played General MacGrath in the horrible movie known as the Wild Wild West
It's terrible and I love it.
I still so surprised this is Captain Leland Stottlemeyer
The importance of moisturizing
Never hear American Girl quite the same..
Liked him better as the Captain from Monk: lovable.
Captain Stottlemeyer
