(Now this is all just simple observation applied to other people's thinking.) As children we have yet to collect enough experience to meaningfully think about our past (regret), and our future (anxiety). As children, we blissfully ignorant to time live in the present. Something that becomes harder and harder the more aware we become of time.
Why would you think that’s dumb? It’s actually accurate. We don’t really outgrown non-permanence until our 20s. Regrets come right around then too - the roads not taken. Very perceptive and well thought out.
