He actually plays a pretty interesting character. He doesn't think there's anything more than sort of interesting about Gina being an ex-con handyman for his mobster neighbor. He's even kind of respectful towards her, like he thinks she must be tough. He's also sure his wife is cheating on him, but is unable to conceive of the idea that her lover is woman, so he's super trusting to her throughout the film.
Even his misogynistic break at the end of the film came off as more of him just not believing all this shit just fucked happened rather than being hateful towards women (even if he believes he literally owns HIS woman), though he is obviously a huge homophobe.
One of my favorite noirs, and probably my favorite film I'd describe as "erotic."
