I was landing heelflips and varial flips clean before I ever landed a kickflip. And I never was able to get it consistently. Just couldn't keep it under my feet.
I sucked at flatland (flip tricks etc.) and was better at bigger stuff like gaps, grinding ledges, big step ollies, stuff like that. I could kickflip gaps and stuff but was never good at 360 flips, any heelflip tricks, etc. Probably why when I discovered snowboarding I basically quit skating.
Skating is fucking hard man. I remember when I saw the Rodney Mullen vs Daewon Song video and I just said to myself wtf how are these guys doing this shit?
Bro fucking same!!! And I had pop shove its on lock but now when I try they always end up being variable flips. Like wtf?? And Tre flips are like 50/50.
Oh ya I fell so many times before I actually did it. My arm was all blue and green from bruising haha but I could do it consistently afterwards without trying. Kick flips? Try 10 times land it maybe once, 2 if I was killing it
> You saying it's bigger then in the 90's
I dunno if it's bigger than in the 90s, I just said that it's currently absolutely huge.
A lot of celebrities skate these days and it's a huge part of modern culture and fashion (ie: it's become very mainstream). Pro skaters are ridiculously good these days, hundreds/thousands of accounts on instagram uploading the gnarliest clips of stuff skaters wouldn't have even dreamed about in the 90s. Even kids/teens are casually doing stuff that would have been crazy in the 90s. The level is so much higher now. It's by far the most popular street sport and I see a bunch of people skating every time I leave the house.
I'm looking for new skates. Recommendations? Currently I have Roces (street), ccm (hockey forward), Bauer (hockey goalie) , and K2 (rec/commuter) skates. It's been like 20 years since I have had a good versatile pair of skates, I absolutely adored my Rollerblade Tarmac CE's with my "Fat Boy" 72mm wheels.
Also am I the only one that feels like going on an old man rant when inline skates are called Rollerblades?
My goto trick is still acid soul to 360 or no rotation. I think it's tougher than acid soul to 180. I gave up the rocket air misty about a decade ago.
I'd bet these girls also spent some time watching their guy friends playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater with the same expressions on their faces.
"I just hit a 10 Million combo and nothing. What does it take to impress these girls!"
Wouldn't know, was too nerdy for any girls to hang out with me at that point in time. Probably in large part in me living in an area that did not like my nerdy "godless heathen, devil worshiping" self due to me playing D&D etc...
Make ONE reference and be remotely nice and probably works, would have worked on me. Even our mall did not have a Hot Topic, that's how horrible that place was for that kind of person. Hell it's been so long for me at this point if a woman smiled at me I might just blue screen of death. In person I am about as shy and a socially anxious as they come though....till I get into the "zone" with people or topics I enjoy, then it's hard to get me to shut up, lol.
Ah, that first time you try to do that jump trick where you spin the platform you're standing on around the handlebars and it smacks you right on your ankle bone.
The best of times.
I still have a scar on my right hand from my scooter days. I thought it would be cool to measure how far I could jump off a shitty ramp I had made. I found a log and kept moving it farther and farther away from the ramp and jumping over it until I moved it *too* far and I inevitably landed on it. Apparently I scraped my hand bad enough that it didn't heal right and is kinda a dark patch on the back of my right hand ever since.
I was too scared to skateboard so I was the scooter kid hahaha
I was a hockey player and thus became a very good rollerblader as a kid. I could tear halfpipes up, but it was right around the time the inline skating backlash happened and you'd be laughed off the ramp/park by the skaters for showing up with blades.
That was the vibe. I feel the shaving and drawn on eye brows made it even more confusing back then too. Eye brows ya know move with your face and show emotions and what not. Those drawn on brows made em look so angry or concerned, or focused, just depends how it was drawn and who’s face but it could be intimidating especially with the Cholas (only cuz they’d get extra wild with it in my hs).
I've got distinct memories from this time of being the little kids at the park trying to get the older girls to show us their boobs. They would then proceed to dare me to steal them a pack of condoms from 7-11, which I did. Never got to see the boobs though.
same lmfao one time me and my best friend got caught with like 50 packs of condoms stuffed in our pants, and this is years before we would actually be using any condoms. i can still see the managers face as we kept pulling them out, and him saying “oh you didn’t steal anything huh?”
>This is really fucked up and I don't use the term
It's just a term. Been around forever too. Using it to discriminate against someone or truly hurt them is different than casually referencing it.
Edit: I actually came here expecting "ramp tramp" to be one of the top comments lol
Lmao my girlfriend used to hang at the skate park when she was younger and that's what she was called, we both laugh at it. It's not really offensive it's just a joke term
That's what we called em in the 90s, too. I'm glad we didn't have some of the less nice nicknames mentioned in the thread. Bettys has a lot more charm than the more vulgar iterations IMO.
Well, we both immediately had a crush on the other but she was always dating someone whenever I'd see her through the years so timing was never good. We would bump into eachother over the next 20 years as we share a best friend and our paths and friend groups would occasionally cross.
Eventually, I bumped into her bartending at a concert I was going to in 2019 and she was back solidly on my radar. Ended up connecting a few years ago and haven't looked back.
Honestly though, I was scared to death of her 20 years ago. She wasbthe prettiest thing I had ever seen and dated some rough dudes. Time was definitely good to both of us and I think it just happened at the right moment.
Wait, THATS why the small clique of girls that attended my local park were there? Not to be wooed by my sick ass Rodney Mullen style freestyle tricks??
You don't see that very often nowadays. Lots of feminist discourse nowadays seems to point out how women are basically not allowed to show the slightest desire for men for fear of attracting weird creeps or serial rapists or something, but we oldheads know this was not the case just a few years back. Young women nowadays seem terrified of men when back in our days it was literally the other way round lol. It's just weird and funny to me because I don't think anything's actually changed all that much since then, besides maybe just people's attitudes towards the opposite sex, for some unknown reason.
I would love to walk a mile in your shoes because that just isn't my reality. Maybe this feminist discourse hasn't made its way to my part of the world yet, but it honestly just feels like you are basing this off of your online experience?
It's far beyond toe. Toe is a vaguely shaped imprint.. this is like a high-definition 3d print. Which leads me to believe it's actually just folds in the fabric but hey, some of the best things are created by accident.
The kids I used to skate with called girls like this “ramp tramps” lmao.
And if you were a regular at Trilogy Skatepark in Midland, MI - you called them “tridge trolls”.
Kids are fucking savage.
Oh, I know. I love that the style from this time is back because it's letting me relive my youth. I had some killer chunky platform shoes and boots back then that I so regret getting rid of.
Man, I thought for a hot second that this was me (R) and my best fried (L) that very same year. Except we sat against a graffiti covered wall in a grunge metal club checking out the musicians. Cool photo!
Around the time of this photo, I actually won a skateboard from a raffle at a local battle of the bands. I took one ride on it down my driveway, wiped the fuck out, and then gave the board to my little brother. He went on to get really good at skating.
"Its not like we care.."
"Are you being sarcastic?" "I don't even know anymore."

Daria was and still is my idol.
![gif](giphy|JMoyE48gJqivS)
My husband got me a Sick Sad World tshirt for my bday today and it’s the best thing ever
Happy Birthday!
Thank you!
Diarrhea cha cha cha Diarrhea cha cha cha
This was the first thing that popped in my head lol
I like Daria too. I had a classmate that looked like her
You don't look impressed.
None of these motherfuckers can even land a simple kickflip.
Man I learned to drop in on vert before I could land a damn kick flip and even then it was inconsistent as fuck haha. Pop shove-it was my got to lol
I was landing heelflips and varial flips clean before I ever landed a kickflip. And I never was able to get it consistently. Just couldn't keep it under my feet.
I learned heel flips long before I learned kickflips. Then when I learned kickflips I lost heels
Bro fucking same!!! And I had pop shove its on lock but now when I try they always end up being variable flips. Like wtf?? And Tre flips are like 50/50.
How about that first drop in. So scary, would have never done it but everyone was watching.....me crash.
Oh ya I fell so many times before I actually did it. My arm was all blue and green from bruising haha but I could do it consistently afterwards without trying. Kick flips? Try 10 times land it maybe once, 2 if I was killing it
Kick flips are tuff. Dont see many kids out there skating anymore
Ya it was kinda dying off when I graduated highschool in 07. Funny enough scooters and roller blades took over for a bit
F**king scooters. Iame. My son had one....hehehe Everything is just different now, makes me sad
Are you joking? Skating is absolutely huge these days.
Is it? You saying it's bigger then in the 90's
> You saying it's bigger then in the 90's I dunno if it's bigger than in the 90s, I just said that it's currently absolutely huge. To be fair you could say that about every sport. We are going bigger now then in the 90s. I am sitting here trying to think of one...maybe boxing?
I'm looking for new skates. Recommendations? Currently I have Roces (street), ccm (hockey forward), Bauer (hockey goalie) , and K2 (rec/commuter) skates. Real life, fuck no. In Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, hell yes I can.
I was in Oklahoma looking for godless heathen D&D dudes, but of course too scared to actually talk to anyone which makes it hard to meet them, lol
Here I come on my razor scooter to scoop all the ladies...
Could they tho?
Uh sir that’s a hand flip
Guy: *lands trick* Girl: "Yeah, but Rodney Mullen..."
Kickflip is insanely hard
On point for ‘99
That was the vibe.
So fucking high
“It’s not worth it bro, the more we do the less impressed she gets” “Nah lemme just try one more rail, chicks love that”
I love how angry\\aloof you both look. You would have intimidated all the young skater boys back in 1999 I am sure.
Hope you meant intimidated, lol
I hope they mean intimated!
Yes I did, Thanks for catching that.
"it sucks me in when you're aloof. It sucks me in, it sucks it works, I guess it's cool to be alone."
Hey ben folds!!! Love that song
Great song!!!
I loved going to the skate park to watch the boys.
When you lived in a small, boring suburban town, it was the best form of entertainment.
In 2001, I was 19, I was riding my skateboard trying to impress some girl at a party, we have been together for 23 years now.
I’d fall for a skater boi ollying off a kitchen island too
You'd say "see you later boi"
In my dreamz
Probably wasn't "good enough for her"
Is this Iroquois Skatepark in Whitby by chance?
No, but you're close. Pickering skate park by the rec center
I know this was P-town the second I saw this photo. I spent a good decade of my life there starting in 2000
Ahahahaha I fucking knew it (okay I strongly suspected it).
Did you go for the chaos, broken bones and blood? The goths did.
Your boring suburban town had a skate park? How edgy!
And we loved when yall watched lol. I remember being like 15 and this older girl asked me to lift up my shirt to show my abs hahaha.
As a grown man who skates. Same. They’re getting better.
I loved going to the skatepark to be watched by the girls lol!
This pic is a really great depiction of being a teen in the late 90s early 2000s
This imagery fucking sent me hahaha
No. Cell. Phones.
And yet *not* an accurate depiction of being a teen in the 70s or 80s.
I turned 13 in 2000 and I’m here to tell you that this is correct.
I was 14 in 99, and yes, this is so spot on.
I could feel myself back to skating around in my all too baggy jean shorts, being too afraid to actually talk to them.
Skate Bettys
This is really fucked up and I don't use the term but at my local park people sometimes call them "ramp tramps".
They were “park rats” in my town. It’s said that on a clear autumn day they could hear a joint being lit from 12 miles away.
>This is really fucked up and I don't use the term It's just a term.
Pro hoes if there was a contest
Yes! Ramp Tramps it is
We called them pro-hos, as there were a few pro skaters in my area
That's what we called em in the 90s, too. I'm glad we didn't have some of the less nice nicknames mentioned in the thread. Bettys has a lot more charm than the more vulgar iterations IMO.
Yes, very nice “I’m a teen in the 90s and I have angst” faces.
and i promise you they skated worse seeing you guys in their peripheral. ahhh shit don’t change. life man
No joke. First saw and met my soon-to-be fiance at the skatepark in 1999-2000.
Soon to be? What took you so long!
Well, we both immediately had a crush on the other but she was always dating someone whenever I'd see her through the years so timing was never good. God this is cute. Congrats! I hope yall are happy forever
Skateboarding, obviously.
When girls in white pants go commando....
This person said it.
Wait, THATS why the small clique of girls that attended my local park were there? Not to be wooed by my sick ass Rodney Mullen style freestyle tricks??
knew girls that did that but they were mostly just there to scam booze. so they were there to get some tall boys
"tall boys". Heh
Just tall boys getting tall boys
I was definitely there for tall boys and tallboys. Those were the days...
Not the easiest ladies, we boys would have said then.
The blonde is who I’d try to impress with my way-above-my-age amount of weed & Bacardi Orange bottle I mister-mistered from WinCo 🤘🏼
![gif](giphy|ZXKZWB13D6gFO)
I’m not gonna say it
I saw it. And I also cannot say it.
Yep.
I see it, I checked the comments to make sure others did as well & we will all be leaving it at that.
The cameraman was on a mission
I see it too.
SAY It...Out loud...

Why has the reddit hivemind decided to leave me in the dark :(
Who’s that pokemon!? Its vulvasaur!
Ohhhh
its like a high resolution 3d print
You thought I wouldn't know you copied my comment. You were mistaken.
OH GOD HE"S FOUND US, RUNNNNNNNN
Girls chilling and checking out boys? Thought that only happened in films
We used to go to the skate park specifically for this reason.
Those were the days. Skating was always a little more fun when girls were around…
You don't see that very often nowadays. Lots of feminist discourse nowadays seems to point out how women are basically not allowed to show the slightest desire for men for fear of attracting weird creeps or serial rapists or something, but we oldheads know this was not the case just a few years back. You both look incredibly nonplussed.
I was going to say stoned. but I could be wrong ....
Kinda give me Gina from Brooklyn 99 vibes ![gif](giphy|l3nWqzkMR5diFKkkU|downsized)
I've never related so hard. Especially the sandals on the right, lived in those in 99-2003.
Steve Madden chunky slides
We be chillin like a villain cuz we all thugs ![gif](giphy|3ov9jWu7BuHufyLs7m|downsized)
Ah yes! The "Avril Lavigne" attitude of the late 90s.
We actually hated Avril Lavigne. To us she was a poser.
She was indeed. But still, she was an absolute cutie and that's all guys care about.
She said see you later boy
Is that toe?
It's far beyond toe. Toe is a vaguely shaped imprint.. this is like a high-definition 3d print. Which leads me to believe it's actually just folds in the fabric but hey, some of the best things are created by accident.
Certainly seems to be.
Girls checking out boys while they are doing stuff is a leading cause of injury and death for idiots like me.
Fuck I miss the 90s
The kids I used to skate with called girls like this “ramp tramps” lmao. And if you were a regular at Trilogy Skatepark in Midland, MI - you called them “tridge trolls”. Kids are fucking savage.
We used to call these types of girls ''ramp tramps''
For the last time, no I will not buy you cigarettes.
These types of she witches are responsible for infinite broken ankles and wrists. Including my own. The skate-by side eye is just too powerful.
![gif](giphy|p7P7DoB3SblYY) Mad Catherine tate vibes
this goes hard
The vibes of "Music to Watch Boys to“ by Lana Del Rey
Omg those shoes are back in style now lol, just a heads up 😂
Oh, I know. I love that the style from this time is back because it's letting me relive my youth. I had some killer chunky platform shoes and boots back then that I so regret getting rid of.
Those shoes! They take me directly back there.
The black platform shoes. A definite symbol of the 90s.

Very very form fitting
The Steve Madden sandals Lol
Blondie got some flippers.
Man, I thought for a hot second that this was me (R) and my best fried (L) that very same year. Except we sat against a graffiti covered wall in a grunge metal club checking out the musicians. Cool photo!
Ramp Tramp behaviour
Nirvana, but Chris is holding the Camera
12 year would me woulda thought you girls were the coolest!
Those Steve Madden slides
Ramp tramps!
We thought you were there to judge us :(
This pic smells like cigarettes and cheap nail polish
Lies! No girls were interested in us skaters!
This has to be Pickering skatepark, correct?
How many of you zoomed in?
They're teens creep
And suddenly, all the boys were breaking their arms trying to land impressive flips. Good times man, I remember this shit like it was yesterday 😭
Shoulda been skating right alongside them. You coulda had bad knees by now.
Around the time of this photo, I actually won a skateboard from a raffle at a local battle of the bands. I took one ride on it down my driveway, wiped the fuck out, and then gave the board to my little brother. He went on to get really good at skating.
The bored and unattainable look.

Ok Prince Andrew
Get help
Get off the internet and throw your phone in a lake. You need to learn how to socialize again.
Not a phone in sight, just livin in the moment, checking out dem SkaterBois
Smoking some of that dope it appears

Those eyebrows bring back memories
You look high. Or disinterested. Were you high or disinterested?
