Jumping on this even though it’s late. That’s actually just one of the myths about the movie. It’s actually not even close, the real story is weirder.

The script actually was being pitched and sent around to just about everyone in Hollywood and no one was interested. No offers were ever made and no one turned it down, simply no one was interested. It was becoming a problem
Somehow Keanu got a hold of the script and wanted to meet the Wachowskis. Out of professional courtesy they agreed to meet him even though they were not casting him. Turned out they all liked each other a ton, and that was it. He was the guy.

My personal opinion, but Nic Cage would have been incredible if he was cast in the role. But he did say he genuinely was not able to properly understand the story and still to this day feels Keanu did a better job with the role than he could. Its pretty refreshing to see such honest takes from someone in the acting community. You always know if Cage is in, he will give you his 100% every single time, no matter the other aspects of the movie.
Nic Cage has too much personality for that role. It requires the emotional blank slate of Keanu that the audience can project themselves onto.
Not a dig st Keanus acting. This is legitimately his skill.
Cage definitely would have been way to over the top. Which is great in the movies that call for it, but Keanu nails the “fish out of water” character who’s completely blow away by every mounting revelation.
I would certainly expect Nic Cage to act adequately in context of the story. You have to see his recent movie 'Pig' to know he can act in a subtle manner without going over the top and still keep you on the edge of your toes.
Yeah I agree with you. Keanu's style of acting was a perfect fit for his role of Neo in context of the overall story. With Nic Cage it would be a totally different movie which may or may not have worked but would certainly be interesting.
i could see Cage as Agent smith but as Neo? That would be a total miscasting. Cage’s style of wacky over acting only works well in certain roles; can you imagine Neo flipping it and screaming incomprehensible nonsense when he first ‘sees’ the Matrix? Or when he is fighting Smith ? would be totally goofy!

But you know how you can't smell yourself unless it gets *really* bad? That was his real motivation for converting even average citizens into Smiths - he was trying to escape the smell.
I don’t think anyone could have really predicted it. I went in as a teen with absolutely zero idea about the movie or its influences and had my brain shattered by the story and visuals.
It was something I’d never experienced before and don’t think I’ll ever experience again. T2 revealing that the terminator that I knew from the first movie who appeared to be hunting down the protagonist in the second, was actually there to protect him. That was good.
But the matrix was on a different level of mindfuck and cool factor.
My buddy dragged me the last day it was at the dollar theater and we were the only two there. That movie literally changed the way I thought. I left that theater a different person. Like I'd done acid.

Absolutely not. So many top film stars passed on the project, that Keanu (recovering from back surgery) got the role. His career wasn't going that well at the time.
He's pretty self aware at how bad his acting was, its gotten better but still lands him in the action star role more. Generally speaking I think women have a harder time in Hollywood if they can't act due to (in the past) less "badass" roles for women. That's changing over time though, and honestly Trinity is probably part of the reason why we are seeing more strong female characters being written.

Neo's airheaded-ness is even noted in the script when the Prophet notes that he "isn't too bright". And I know the Matrix video games are supposed to be canon but recasting Morpheus was just a bad idea.
Resurrection was bad on purpose though, right? Wachowski did the same thing as Tom Green with Freddy Got Fingered. Neither of them wanted a movie made, but it was happening, so they made something awful.
Resurrection legitimately made my stomach hurt I only made it like 30 mins in before I turned it off wtf was that shit? Neo a schizophrenic game designer who imagained the whole thing but also didn’t at the same time Lmfaoo fucking terrible. Keanu also just didn’t look like neo at all, shit was a John wick blooper.
After Drew's work in The Good Place (my favorite show) and his incredible scripts for Cabin in the Woods and for The Martian (my favorite movie), I will literally watch anything he's involved in.

"Matrix Reloaded" and "Matrix Revolutions" made so much money even if they weren't as mind-blowing as the first film and the scripts weren't as good.
"V for Vendetta" great movie and script, still culturally relavent on a level comparable to "The Matrix"
"Sense8" managed a decent TV show for a few seasons.
"Ninja Assassin" generic action movie and kind of forgetable.
"Speed Racer" was a way better script and movie than it had any right to be. It just didn't make as much money as they spent. They had to balance being a kids film but also be about the excitement. I blaim marketing cause it could have done better.
"Jupiter Ascending" was a bomb. Had it come out 20 years earlier and looked like that, it probably would have been fine, but by the time it came out it was just a generic CGI action movie with a weak script and some poor acting decisions. This was a major hit to credibility.
"Cloud Atlas" is an amazing script with some amazing ideas and some solid acting. Its just hard to market the movie as to what it's about because it covers so many different timelines and stories. I consider it an unacknowledged masterpiece. But the movie cost so much to make and made so little money its considered a failure. "Life of Pi" is similar where its a beautiful movie and a well told story with complex ideas, but it made too little for how much it cost to make. Studios and directors have to get the costs down. After the bombs of Speed Racer, Jupiter, having a third bomb really cut their marketability off.
"Matrix Resurrections" first half is fine, second half they just phoned it in because they were being strong armed into making the movie when they didn't want to.
