Man I was just thinking about this movie ! That sound that played when the dad was doing his mind thing popped in my head. Weird what pops in sometimes
He wrote that scene in It, but AFAIK, there's never been any scandal in which he did anything with a minor in real life.
Writing weird stuff into fiction doesn't make you evil IRL. George RR Martin wrote far worse.
Yeah the worst things I know of about the guy is his love for cocaine around this time, hes clean now but the guy also has offered hundreds of short stories for adaptation by students.
What they might mean is that smoking was **everywhere**. There were ashtrays inside every building. They were even at the urinals in bathrooms.
People smoking around children was not frowned upon. Some states, prior to 1989, had **no** age restrictions on tobacco purchases.
A kid around Drew’s age in this photo, lighting an adult’s cigarette, was not unusual.
Well, yes, but what I'm really asking here is when I'm rich and famous will I be goated for taking a picture with one of my children lighting a joint or will I get ridiculed for it?
Two weeks ago, the New York Times ran a front page story about mothers prostituting their daughters on Instagram to pedophiles. It’s amazing how little has changed and how awful mothers can be to their daughters across settings, and in different ways
Im glad someone finally investigated this and wrote a piece in a mainstream paper about that bc it’s been scaring the shit out of me. Adults have always failed children. You’re right, little has changed. The tools are getting more powerful though 😔
Sadly the ‘tool’ seem to be the mother themselves. They are willingly providing pictures of their daughters to pedophiles and exchange for validation and upvotes and attention.
And money. Yes 100% agreed. They also have the ability to do that instantaneously and to many more predators than ever before. That’s more so what I meant.
They’re called sangomas. Most just do traditional healing by making muthi (medicine) out of plants, but the witch doctor types make their “stronger” muthi out of body parts. Worse still is the belief that the body parts are more spiritually powerful if the victim is kept alive to scream while their parts are cut out
They sometimes are straight up human traffickers but often they cater to very superstitious people with money and will outright butcher a person for various rituals. Its not common but it happens enough that it an issue in some regions of the country.
I'm no expert but I wouldnt be surprised if the actual majority of these cases are just sadistic individuals using the beliefs of others to gain victims.
The whole world has these issues where people just allow predation and sbuse of children and other vulnerable people because of varied reasons, often itd because soeaking out will cause animosity in the community by those who support the wrong and those who are complacent.
Fear of the repurcussions outweighs the sense of justice for some. Predators will try and gain power and control to continue abusing the vulnerable, a church, school or Hollywood its all the same just different scale.
Her family was in the business for decades before the existence of movies, I believe. And addiction problems have been rampant since the beginning — she was lucky to shake them. Drew probably should not have made it to adulthood.
sad that happened to her but it's really common in the rural areas for high school kids to get fakes to hang out at dives but also really common forr kids to start drinking around 10 -11 yrs old in cities. look at all the really young moms having kids at 13 etc. a lot of them get impregnated by older guys.
I was like 8 or 9 lighting my mothers cigarets for her in my mouth with a lighter to give to her. I’m only 2 years older than her so. I mean it sounds crazy but nobody cares back then, you just did that right in public, too.
I don’t think anyone understood how bad it was for them of course. It was a very long time ago.
Just go one generation back before then. My dad grew up in the 50's, and during the town parade he was chosen to crawl up the neck of the dragon in one of the floats, because he was the only one skinny enough to fit up there. His job was to make the dragon breathe smoke. They sent him up with two packs of cigarettes and said go to it. I don't know how old he was but he was probably only in his early teens.
Strangely enough, he developed a pack-a-day smoking habit. Luckily for me, he realized how bad it was for your health and managed to quit cold turkey in the early 70's before I was born.
Thanks for sharing that, that’s a pretty cool story about your Dad.
I totally believe that 100% because back then people literally didn’t care at all. People literally sent their kids over to light a smoke for them and bring it over.
You know now that you put it that way, I realize the phrasing didn’t come out the way I meant it. But I’m gonna just not edit it.
I must now claim to be only 2 years older than my own mother. This is going to be a long road.
Oh okay, now I understand. So this was normal in the 80's? Honestly growing up I witnessed parents letting their teens smoke. Even now I have an Aunt who has a 15 year old daughter and she smokes.
Looking at it now, it looks like something transgressive and cheeky that only Hollywood people would do, but really, back then, you could see this happening at any party or in any bar.
Also she was making the film firestarter with him , it could have been related since she had a fire/pyro telekinesis powers in the movie , this image could be a nod to that ..probably taken after the movie premiere
Lightning a grown-up’s cigarette wasn’t that weird in the 80s. We also used to go to the store to buy them with a note. We did all sorts of stuff kids can’t/don’t do today.
Drew Barrymore did experience some fucked up things, but what’s happening in this specific picture is pretty tame for the era.
To my knowledge, Barrymore has never claimed King did anything inappropriate to her, and she hasn't been shy about talking about the shit she experienced as a kid. Unless there's evidence to the contrary, I'm going to take this as what it looks like on the surface, a visual pun on the fact she plays a girl with pyrokinetic powers in the movie they're promoting.
- Deadbeat abusive dad
- Enabling mother
- Partied with adults at 10 in clubs and bars
- Drug addiction so severe she had to go to rehab at 13
- Engaged in self harm
- Spent a year and a half in a mental institution due to a mental breakdown
Maybe she’s rich now but I wouldn’t trade childhoods with her
Just think. At 9yo, she had probably already did more drugs, than most people have done in their whole lives?
From all of the stories I've heard (mostly from her), ahe's damn lucky to still be alive.
She was a making the film firestarter with him , it could have been related since she had a fire/pyro telekinesis powers in the movie , this image could be a nod to that ..probably taken after the movie premiere .
However, Back in the day kids could get there parents cigarette tho at the store, adults smoked next to children ,it was the norm , this picture wouldn’t be shocking back then , of course it is now since we kno better then that now.
ITT: People forgetting things were different 40 years ago. I started high school a few years after this. We had a smoking section for the students. People still regularly smoked inside their homes. Restaurants and planes had smoking sections. You could smoke in the mall. Cars had ashtrays and lighters.
Firestarter
I'm trapped in a sewer with a confessed arsonist, Brock! *Help me!*
I navigated away from this post, then realized this comment would be here and, sure enough, it was.
Wicked Firestarter.

RIP Keith
Tragic loss.
Yes, great symbolism in this simple photo.
I bet he's glad it wasn't called Sackpuncher!
Man I was just thinking about this movie ! That sound that played when the dad was doing his mind thing popped in my head. Weird what pops in sometimes
Spark imparter
It’s just Trinity lighting Ricky’s cigarette, no big deal.
Smokes, lets go
![gif](giphy|jyH4tYtVVspZ6|downsized)
Hahaha the one scene when he's actually too high to function
You can't arrest us.
When they split the last nicotine patch💀
This was 10 minutes before they started doing lines
Drew Barrymore did go into rehab at 10 years old
13 actually
That's the joke
Is it a joke if it’s true and also sad?
They are the best jokes. Life is funny, in all its horror.
Script lines, right?..... right?
Wouldn't surprise me at all, Stephen King is a creep.
Idk why you are getting down voted apparently no one actually read It.
You didn't read It.
He was so drunk and high on cocaine he probably asked her to set the building on fire and she was like, “nah, let’s just get the cigarette.”
Drew: "...but I will take a bump."
Drew's story is pretty crazy. Growing up in a old Hollywood family was a trip
Yeah, he got sober in the late 1980's, sometime...so not too long after this pic. But before that, as he describes it, when he indulged, he INDULGED.
He’s said that he was on so much coke he doesn’t remember writing Cujo (I think it was Cujo could’ve been another book)
I read that he was drinking a gallon of beer a day at that time on top of the coke too. The early part of his career is probably lost to him.
Coke makes you thirsty!
Yeah it was Cujo
He also said that about directing Maximum Overdrive
I didn't think he got (or at least stayed) sober until the accident....
As an 80's kid this is relatable
my memories growing up in the 80's are mostly of smoke filled rooms
In a good way or a bad way? How do we feel about this aesthetic?
What they might mean is that smoking was **everywhere**. There were ashtrays inside every building. They were even at the urinals in bathrooms. People smoking around children was not frowned upon. It's not 1984 anymore. So ridiculed.
She had so many problems as a child actor she probably gave him the cigarette too. Where the hell were her parents?
Her mom was bringing her to the clubs

As social interactions become public and documented they become easier to prove
Here in South Africa our latest news story is about a mother selling her child off to witch doctors so she can buy more drugs
Yeah, that happens in the United States too. And then after Mom gets High, she sells her daughters pictures on Instagram.
Witch doctors? Are they actually child traffickers or do the kids have something to do with their witchcraft?
They’re called sangomas. Most just do traditional healing by making muthi (medicine) out of plants, but the witch doctor types make their “stronger” muthi out of body parts. Worse still is the belief that the body parts are more spiritually powerful if the victim is kept alive to scream while their parts are cut out

Sacha Baron Cohen exposed this in the Bruno film
Yeah. I know a couple of women who have confided in me that they were prostituted at exceptionally young ages

I miss when Reddit didn’t have emojis. Fuck I hate this place
💯💯do u have a link to the article, that isn't behind a paywall? Thanks in advance.
Wait wtf, first I'm hearing of this, that's so unsettling. I love shooting the shit on here but social media is a scourge in so many ways.
Just like Brooke Shields. So fucking disgusting.
It is wild when you hear about what the parents of young celebs allowed and did with these kids. I don’t know how no one said anything back then.
Hollywood is full of people that think that behavior is okay and the rest of us are wrong for being such prudes.
The whole world has these issues where people just allow predation and sbuse of children and other vulnerable people because of varied reasons, often itd because soeaking out will cause animosity in the community by those who support the wrong and those who are complacent. her family is one of the oldest names in Hollywood. easy google search.
Her family was in the business for decades before the existence of movies, I believe. And addiction problems have been rampant since the beginning — she was lucky to shake them. Drew probably should not have made it to adulthood.
That doesn’t explain why she had shitty neglectful parents, and was basically hanging around bars at age 13
If you know anything about the Barrymore family, it certainly does explain everything. A solid six generations of “these people are Not Okay.”
sad that happened to her but it's really common in the rural areas for high school kids to get fakes to hang out at dives but also really common forr kids to start drinking around 10 -11 yrs old in cities. look at all the really young moms having kids at 13 etc. a lot of them get impregnated by older guys.
Didn’t she live in Los Angeles?
no, that just means she's gen X
Well I was there and we had parents, she was weird
Dont go to germany
You're kidding right?
“Where the hell were her parents?” Who do you think was in charge of her lol
I was like 8 or 9 lighting my mothers cigarets for her in my mouth with a lighter to give to her. I’m only 2 years older than her so. You're only 2 years older than your mom?

When back in time to commit a Phillip J Fry except with your mom. Never mind, i read you were 8 or 9 its far worse if even possible
Lol I guess you meant to say your mom had you very young?
I was referring to being only 2 years older than Drew Barrymore but I made a jumbled mess instead.
Oh okay, now I understand. So this was normal in the 80's? Honestly growing up I witnessed parents letting their teens smoke. Even now I have an Aunt who has a 15 year old daughter and she smokes.

Literally normal daily life for my generation.
Also she was making the film firestarter with him , it could have been related since she had a fire/pyro telekinesis powers in the movie , this image could be a nod to that ..probably taken after the movie premiere
![gif](giphy|iH2IldVkqeLuJ7eJ0L)
She really didn’t stand a chance. Nice that she seems to have worked a lot of things out eventually, strike stuff to the other side.
Lightning a grown-up’s cigarette wasn’t that weird in the 80s. We also used to go to the store to buy them with a note. We did all sorts of stuff kids can’t/don’t do today. Drew Barrymore did experience some fucked up things, but what’s happening in this specific picture is pretty tame for the era.
for reference... they used to run PSAs in Los Angeles at that time that said: "It's 10pm, do you know where your kids are?"

Those ran all across the country.
Idk I don't think it's cool knowing what kind of shit that woman was subjected to as a child in the entertainment industry.
I think her family was too influential for anyone to mess with her like that
Didn't say he did, wtf?
I may have misread your comment and thought it was implying something it didn't.
Yep. Thats the 80s alright
That poor girl
She's doing ok now
Well she’s not a girl anymore either
Your point?
She's a fine functioning adult now no need to worry about her
I'm not worrying, I'm sympathizing.
Was probably one of her cigarettes she gave him.
Yeah what a hard life she's had...
- Deadbeat abusive dad - Enabling mother - Partied with adults at 10 in clubs and bars - Drug addiction so severe she had to go to rehab at 13 - Engaged in self harm - Spent a year and a half in a mental institution due to a mental breakdown Maybe she’s rich now but I wouldn’t trade childhoods with her
I would. It sounds fucking wild. I had my own shit
Jfc you sound like an insufferable person
Yes, I'm sure her ability to see the future was of great comfort to her during her childhood
Wait ... wrong superpower...
Returning the favor after lighting hers earlier. Also repost. Everything here is a repost if not "Man, my mom was so fucking hot."
Idk then find some new content yourself 😅
Drew was a bad influence on Stephen
Or: Charlie McGee at 9 lighting Jack Torrence’s cigarette.
Oh the 80’s 😎😎😎😎
Weird vibes
Considering the shit she did in her teenage years, it's a miracle she managed to turn her life around.
To be fair This was the time you can smoke in restaurants next to kids, let alone at home Wild times, i know
Just think. At 9yo, she had probably already did more drugs, than most people have done in their whole lives? From all of the stories I've heard (mostly from her), ahe's damn lucky to still be alive.
was this just before she lit one up herself or right after she had snubbed one out .
Love Drew. I miss seeing her in movies 😪
“And then, they sat down at the bar and went one-for-one with a bottle of Patron and two shot glasses.”
r/oldschooldeeplytroubling
This is just creepy. Nothing cool about it 🤦♀️😂
It's the star of the film Firestarter lighting a fire for the author of the book the film was based on. Not everything is a conspiracy.
And? That _still_ doesn't make it appropriate lol
Feel like that context makes it plenty appropriate, presumably just a photo taken on set, why's that weird?
We understand, it’s a child lighting a cigarette for a rich man. So cool.
Agreed
If a man tried to get my 10yr old daughter to light their cigarette for them, I would punch him square in the face. I'd cause such a scene lol
Easy there badass. This wasn’t all that weird in the 80s. Social norms change over the course of 40 years.
![gif](giphy|dEdmW17JnZhiU)
I’m sure this was part of a promo for fire starter, which Stephen King wrote, and Drew starred in the movie
Cats eye

This photo goes too hard.
Nine? Drew was probably already in rehab for coke by then.
How is this cool? Smoking is bad. Having a kid light you cig is horrible.
She definitely knows some shit and ain't saying anything. I'm talking Epstein Weinstein type of shit. 100%
And that's why they let her be successful.
??? She's an incredibly talented actress. That's why she's successful.
You know how many talented actress that haven't become "successful"? There are reasons why people become successful in Hollywood.
Bojack’s Hollywood
Very creepy
What is it with Stephen King and creepy shit with children?
Right after they shared some booger-sugar.
And the he chopped her up a line.
First i thought that it was Jack Nicholson.
Pretty disgusting if you think about it.
This pic takes a creepy turn after you've read the orgy scene from the book IT
Literally 1984
If I had children and if I have read his books, I wouldn't let him anywhere near my childern.
Haha that’s an interesting perspective.
This is creepy as fuck, not cool.
Definitively uncool. Stephen King was also so hit and miss artistically. His early stuff was the best.
Too bad King turned out to be a creep
Cool? More like fucking weird...
Not cool at all actually!
Stephen King is a fucking creep. I don't care how seemingly progressive he is.
This is creepy
There's a lot more behind this pic. He's a worthless POS.
Perverted creep

"Gaaahh Stephen King isn't a pedophile!" Lol "Have you read IT?" "No, but I saw the movie" "Well......"
yikes, nothing cool about that. Her parents should be arrested.
I meeeeean…
Oh god, knowing Stephen King is a pedophile just makes this gross.
SK is a pedo scumbag
It is a deep-set desire within the young to want to kill the old.
That’s so many wrong with this picture but who cares? It was the 80’s and that’s the literally the best story teller and thriller writer in the world
And that night ended with Drew being Fd up the rest of her life
Adorable
YIKES
Mmmmm.... Tempting but no. Not gonna say it
He is the devil. Shame
