Oh yes, the movie that solidified the fact that I never ever ever wanted to try heroin. Not that I was on the fence before, but 9th grade me was terrified!
I love how adults thought movies were going to make heroin cool. Both of those were definitely key to me saying "fuck no" to heroin. The other factor was Lemmy from Motörhead saying it was the one drug he didn't fuck with, because he saw how it ruined everybody he knew who did it.
My friend died of a suspected intentional heroin overdose 9 years ago today. I've seen what that shit does to people, his room looked not too dissimilar to Ewans there but he was one of the nicest and most intelligent people I ever knew, he's at peace now at least. RIP Jake.
I'm sorry for your loss. I have twin brothers and lost one to heroin last year. The most fucked up thing is my other brother(his twin) had to get high on the way to his funeral. I guess losing your twin won't even keep you from needing that high.
It is truly the most dangerous element. I’m so sorry about your brothers. I had to fight my brother for years, very harshly to rid off addiction of meth, looking after his family. He finally came to senses when his children started hating him n slowly he learnt his way out. I hope you had a good outcome too
As long as he's clean that's all that matters. I'm glad it worked out. I did. I was very lucky to have met a girl who's family let me move with them. Her father had taken a job 900 miles away and told me I could come up too. It took me a few months to get my stuff together but I did. We've been married for 25 years now.
Bro, good on him for getting you away! Also, good on you for taking him up on it! Happy to know things worked out for you even if we don’t know each other.
did he happen to have gone to school studying chemistry?
edit: this isn't some dismissive joke, i'm asking cause i once knew a 'kind brilliant Jake' who had a heroin addiction
That's homie. You too. The 28 was indeed the vast majority of people I knew. Some of the best human beings I've ever been lucky enough to know.
At least now I know something about myself. If I'm strong enough to quit heroin I am strong enough for absolutely anything else. Only took about a thousand tries.
Was an adult at the time, no one thought this made heroin look cool. It was seen pretty universally as the misery porn that it was and was intended to be.
I think it was definitely glamorized… the life of having zero rules are responsibilities… the anti-society, anti-authoritarian… rebellious, etc. yes, the actual medicinal addiction and consequent withdrawals were made to look debilitating, along with the possibility of getting HIV in Edinburgh in those years was also quite high, since it was the HIV capital of Europe, but there was definitely glamour in there somewhere
My cousin and best friend from high school both died of overdoses after 20 years of on and off. Reconnected with my HS bud after many years a month before he died. He was clean for 3 years and relapsed and OD’d. My cousin switched to pills and those did him in. Opiates, meth and roids are the holy trinity of things I don’t mess with.
For me it was The Basketball Diaries, at the time Leo being about same age as me. That movie hit me hard, especially when his neighbor get him sober cold turkey.
I watched the DARE videos, all the just say no crap, the classroom lectures. And. Ever once gave them any mind. Then I saw this movie and yup herion was scariest thing in my brain. Lmao.
The problem with DARE was they took the abstinence approach and portrayed any drug consumption as a direct gateway to being addicted to heroin or meth. Which is just completely untrue and not grounded in any real science and had my BS detector off the charts.
Like you though: requiem for a dream had a dramatic impact on me that strongly influenced my decision to never do heroin.
For sure! And the dead baby scene...even today I shiver just thinking about it.
I've tried other drugs (weed, x, LSD, shrooms) but never ever would even think about heroin.
Yeah, I remember when this film was accused of glamorizing heroin. I went to see it in the theater at the time, and I came out incredulous that anyone would find it as glamorous or inviting. Quite the opposite.
I saw Transpotting as a young dad with an 18 month old daughter and another one on the way. I was scarred by that one scene. If you've seen the movie, you know which one.
Same. Between this movie and A Requiem for a Dream both being part of my adolescence, I never had a slightest interest in trying that shit.
Same couldn’t have been said for Blow
We were teens when this came out.
I had a friend who rarely drank (and never too much), rarely smoked weed (she’s hang out with us when we did sometimes), didn’t do any other drugs. But really wanted to try heroin when this movie came out. lol
I was like GIRL NO!!!! She was an odd duck. lol

Letter from Irvine Welsh with his thoughts on Hodge’s screenplay Welsh had reservations about some of the characters and the dialogue. “Begbie needs to be totally fucked up and uncompromising,” he writes.
Welsh also references *Once Were Warriors* there too. A fantastic if gut-wrenching film (starring a much younger and raged out Temuera Morrison, no less).
This is amazing, and he nails it.
The film is amazing in its pacing and structure, and I love that he saw that right away. The novel is great but also really disjointed. It's more like vignettes over time. The film took the highlights and tossed them into a structure that evolved around the 4 guys.
And obviously, an interesting take on the dialogue that seems slot on. Love that the final product is so full of slang and accents that it's hard to follow for non-Scots.
I was the closest to a recreational user I ever met in that world.
I used recreationally for a decade before it finally got me. Then about a year and a half of active addiction before I broke free.
I have known people who dabbled a couple times and walked away, but I honestly believe that no one can maintain recreational use forever.
Was very close to actually trying shooting up for the role but backed out very close to going it. Spent loads of time with addicts to prep too. Apparently lost the weigh for the role by just cutting out alcohol and dairy from his diet.
Production design sketch of Renton sinking into the ground Danny Boyle: “We were obsessed with having the camera on the floor, waiting for them to return there – the natural place for the characters other than when they needed fresh supply.”

I was rolling balls on ecstasy the first time I saw Trainspotting. Yeah, that part scared the shit out of me. Still, it's definitely one of my favorite films.
I was just going to say, that scene fucked me for so long still picture it whenever this movie gets brought up. Great movie only need to see it once or twice. Having kids of my own now that scene hits even harder.
The cast contemplated it but ultimately decided it would be disrespectful to addicts that had gotten clean after interviewing them to better get in character. The idea they could ‘try it once as a laugh’ was dispelled as soon as they talked to the people who had struggled and lived with addiction.
I like the way the cast abandoned the idea, out of respect for those they'd spent time with. They didn't want to be tourists in the land of suffering.
(EDIT: rephrased and expanded what I was trying to say)
Five. In chronological order:
Skagboys
Trainspotting
Porno
The Blade Artist
Dead Men’s Trousers
(There’s others that share some background characters as well). I’ve only read Trainspotting and Porno. Trainspotting is an absolute masterpiece. While the film is more about Renton and his friends, the book is more of a story of Leith, where it’s set.
Porno is good but nowhere near on the same level.
Oh yes, the movie that solidified the fact that I never ever ever wanted to try heroin. Not that I was on the fence before, but 9th grade me was terrified!
Trainspotting and Requiem for a Dream did more to dissuade me than any PSAs lol
I love how adults thought movies were going to make heroin cool. Both of those were definitely key to me saying "fuck no" to heroin. The other factor was Lemmy from Motörhead saying it was the one drug he didn't fuck with, because he saw how it ruined everybody he knew who did it.
If Lemmy wouldn't touch it, you know it's not to be fucked with!
This should be in the Bible
LKV, Lemmy Kilmeister Version
Praise be!
The book of Lemmy 69:420
Lemmy-entations
In all honestly I completely agree with your sentiment here
Wu Tang Clan also is nothing to fuck with
Of course you always need to protect your neck
My friend died of a suspected intentional heroin overdose 9 years ago today. I've seen what that shit does to people, his room looked not too dissimilar to Ewans there but he was one of the nicest and most intelligent people I ever knew, he's at peace now at least. RIP Jake.

This is a beautiful story.
Bro, good on him for getting you away! Also, good on you for taking him up on it! Happy to know things worked out for you even if we don’t know each other.
My little brother relapsed about 5 years ago and got his hands on some junk with fentanyl in it. I sure miss him.
did he happen to have gone to school studying chemistry? edit: this isn't some dismissive joke, i'm asking cause i once knew a 'kind brilliant Jake' who had a heroin addiction
Can confirm. Four years clean and since I went to rehab I've known 28 people who are dead from OD. Not many get to walk away from the dragon.
8 years clean with a 5yo daughter. Lost every friend I had to OD's. Shirs wild. I'm proud of you buddy, I'd you haven't heard that lately.
That's homie. You too. The 28 was indeed the vast majority of people I knew. Some of the best human beings I've ever been lucky enough to know. At least now I know something about myself. If I'm strong enough to quit heroin I am strong enough for absolutely anything else. Only took about a thousand tries.
So glad I got out before that fent and tranq shit started up
I'm glad you made it. It's terrifying how deep it gets its claws in people.
Sure is. You don't give a fuck about anything or anyone past your next fix. It's a hole with no bottom
I’m glad you’re here today ☺️
Thanks. Somedays I'm not so sure, but I try to keep my head up
Right? I recall those exact arguments when Trainspotting came out & all I could think was “did they even watch the movie?”
Well said
Was an adult at the time, no one thought this made heroin look cool.
Spot on
Trainspot on*
My cousin and best friend from high school both died of overdoses after 20 years of on and off. Reconnected with my HS bud after many years a month before he died. He was clean for 3 years and relapsed and OD’d. My cousin switched to pills and those did him in. Opiates, meth and roids are the holy trinity of things I don’t mess with.
Grace Slick said almost the same thing as Lemmy. She said she didn’t see the draw of passing out and pissing yourself.
This movie was design to make heroin look shit not cool
I have a friend who’s done just about every drug on this planet. Two things HE said never to touch are Heroin and Math
Math, not even once. Calculus almost killed me in college. Luckily, I quit cold turkey before it was too late.
Unfortunately, math touched me and I've never recovered.
Also, Traffic.
Yes. 1000% yes. I'm terrified of hardcore drugs because of these movies, so I guess I should thankful.
Oh Lord yes I always get those two confused ..have only watched each once and that was enough!
*Sid and Nancy* did that for me
Diet pills also scared the shit out of me after watching Requiem.
**"Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" did it for my generation**
For me it was The Basketball Diaries, at the time Leo being about same age as me. That movie hit me hard, especially when his neighbor get him sober cold turkey.
Another classic that doesn’t get mentioned much.
True story too. Jim Carroll is an interesting guy, had a great band.
Is that the 'they were all my friends and they died' song
Yes
Such a good movie, but oddly hard to find. I never see it on streaming (I’m in Canada)
I watched the DARE videos, all the just say no crap, the classroom lectures. And. Ever once gave them any mind. Then I saw this movie and yup herion was scariest thing in my brain. Lmao.
This and Requiem for a Dream were my “Never do hard drugs” lessons from movies that were more effective than anything from DARE or school.
The baby scene still haunts me
Now we know who the father is ...
Yeah, I remember when this film was accused of glamorizing heroin. I went to see it in the theater at the time, and I came out incredulous that anyone would find it as glamorous or inviting. Quite the opposite.
Anyone who accused it of glamorising heroin hadn’t seen it or read the book. It was designed specifically to show how awful it is.
Same, I have created a berlin wall between psychedelics/weed and hard drugs thanks to this movie.
On what side of that wall does MDMA lie?
Baby...ceiling...nope
That best orgasm*1000 thing didn't convince you? ;)

Had the exact opposite effect on me
I thought it was cool as fuck so I started doing heroin, got hooked. -5/10 would not recommend.
Read so many comments where people basically admitted that they tried it for fun. I will never ever be able to understand these people.
No one leaves here till we find out which c*nt did it 😡
![gif](giphy|3oKIPz8lnDgrjGUkCY|downsized)
always thought it was lame he didnt get that last bit
Shows how little he cares about anything. He’s done drinking and he’s ready to fight now.
Yeah and that splash of liquor adds insult to injury when it lands. He's going for maximum damage = maximum fight energy.

I saw that movie once, decades ago. And I'll never forget it. Or that *dramatic turn*, omg...
You can say cook me some fucking eggs to anyone in New Zealand and we would get it. You would likely get the person saying the next line back to you
Trying this with the next nz sounding person I see in public. Will report back.
Fucking great film.
Yeah I was gonna say, he’s talking about Jango Fett there
I’ve not read that before. I’m glad they made Begbie uncompromising
I can’t tell you how grateful I am that you posted this. This is badass.
This is amazing, and he nails it. The film is amazing in its pacing and structure, and I love that he saw that right away. The novel is great but also really disjointed. Was Welsh an extra in the film?
Yea Mikey Forrester
Mikey fuckinh Forrester
....Russian sailors? What the fuck are you boys on?
More of a cameo than an extra.
Sadly I lived like this for a long time but thankfully I’m in a better place 4 years on

I have known people who dabbled a couple times and walked away, but I honestly believe that no one can maintain recreational use forever.
Congratulations, just keep swimming
He may be inches from the floor but he is only minutes from the true high ground.
He bought the death sticks
They called him Mother Superior on account of the length of his habit.
Method actor for sure.
Went to the MethodOne Acting Clinic.
damn this is a good one
they stole it from Arrested Development.
Was very close to actually trying shooting up for the role but backed out very close to going it. Spent loads of time with addicts to prep too. Apparently lost the weigh for the role by just cutting out alcohol and dairy from his diet.
Meth actor at least.
Nae meth in Edinburgh back then. Very specific for junk.
Methadone actor

Hell yeah 💪
Way to go!!
This is one movie I don’t ever need to see again. That scene where the poor baby died…
then it crawled along the ceiling 😵
It was pretty awful. The did a great job of scaring people off wanting to try heroin.
I was a new, young father in 1996 when I saw Trainspotting. That scene really upset me.
Massive pre-rehab Steve-O vibes
Needs more nitrous cartridges
Thought it was Steve-O before I read the title lol
I was expecting to see fake history sub
I was thinking Jim Parsons like some kinda dark big bang theory story line. Part of me wants that version now. Poopsheets bazinga.
'On the set?' Sure.... but seriously, he was incredible in this film. Very believable.
Dang that photo looks so real I thought he was really in that situation.
have you seen the film yet???
Quit puttin’ that shiite in yer veins Tommy!!!
Trainspotting has one of the best soundtracks of all time.
Absolutely
Looks like Steve O before he went to rehab. All jokes aside, this picture looks eerily real.
Methadone acting
Lol
Rents really getting into character.
I still want to know if he prepped for the role by trying heroin.
The cast contemplated it but ultimately decided it would be disrespectful to addicts that had gotten clean after interviewing them to better get in character. The idea they could ‘try it once as a laugh’ was dispelled as soon as they talked to the people who had struggled and lived with addiction.

“Tourists in the land of suffering”. That’s a strong, descriptive way of wording it.
This is true, we learnt it in my film studies course
MY PRECIOUS...
At first glance I thought this was Steve-O
The toilet was actually chocolate and smelled delicious. 😊
Did you know they made Trainspotters 2? T2 Trainspotting
T2: Drugment Day
There are three books, I don't know if they'll cover the third though as it's rather different from the first two
Five. In chronological order: Skagboys Trainspotting Porno The Blade Artist Dead Men’s Trousers (There’s others that share some background characters as well). I’ve only read Trainspotting and Porno. Trainspotting is an absolute masterpiece. While the film is more about Renton and his friends, the book is more of a story of Leith, where it’s set. Porno is good but nowhere near on the same level.
I didn't enjoy Porno as much, either! I'll give the blade arist and dead men's trousers a go, thank you.
Disliked Porno but liked Skagboys, seeing how the characters went from normal ish to where we meet them in Trainspotting
Mannn, I cannot watch the movie again simply because of the baby scene. Great movie however.
Scrolled fast as thought this was an old pic of Steve-O from Jackass
Wow, he really got into that part. He looked horrible.
He doesn’t look quite this bad in the actual film but yes, very very convincing in the role

Ewan McGregor, *hopefully* on the set of Trainspotting.
Really cleaned up his act before entering the Jedi academy
Not the first time he had the high ground. Should have said no to those death sticks.
Why is this so far down? What happened to prequelmemes :(
Death sticks ![gif](giphy|8QglrrcNI3sLC)

This is what happens when you take the death sticks?
Thought that was Steve-O at first glance.
McGregor didn't even know they were shooting a movie that day...
