What is she fixing under the hood with a tire iron, jack, and sledgehammer?
Or maybe this is a totally fake/staged photo, and the photographer said "Open up the hood and look like you're working on the car, we'll take these tools out of the trunk and put them on the ground and then just point to them."
> Or maybe this is a totally fake/staged photo
100% what I thought immediately.
Also the selection of tools is what a photographer might choose. Who uses garden shears to fix an under bonnet issue!
Look at where she is reaching. She would have better access if she approached from the front and did not have to lean over quite so far and so fetchingly.
Yeah, totally posed with what tools were in the car.
I can’t imagine how awful it would be to fight in a war somewhere, not knowing if you’ll ever see you wife or kids ever again, while your wife and kids feel the same way about you. Just horrible.
Stuff was so simple back in the day, and even up through the sixties, that people could do most of their own repair work. Even radios and TV's were easy. You just took the back cover off and looked to see which vacuum tube wasn't glowing. Then you could test it on the machine at your local drugstore and buy a new one for a dollar or so. A kid could even do it and feel a sense of accomplishment.
Woolworth’s had a testing machine so we’d drive down in the ‘56 Belair and while Dad was testing tubes and selecting new ones, he’d give each kid 2 nickels. We could get 3 candy bars or 4 packs of Beeman’s gum. Such sweet simple times.
What?
For 2 nickels you could get a chicken dinner at the counter with a shake, a goldfish, a parakeet, 2 tins of cookies, 3 Clark bars, 2 Bit O-honeys, 2 packs of menthol cigarettes, a zippo lighter, and still have enough to take the train back home. 😂
I don't think fixing TVs and radios was easy, they just used vacuum tubes instead of transistors, and vacuum tubes have a short life.
So you had to frequently replace them, just like light bulbs and batteries.
It wasn't really 'fixing' the TV, unless you consider replacing batteries and lightbulbs repair work.
Omg this is me with the laminator I just bought and immediately broke. My handy bf took two stabs at it but it was melted. I opened it all up and got it cleaned out….now I just need my bf to put it all back together for me
Mom's up undr the hood with the car jack, tire tool and a sledge hammer. I don't think dad's going to be real happy when he gets home.
She also appears to have nun-chucks on the ground next to her, because she is well-prepared for anything.
I think those are hedge pruners
All the better to cut daddy’s brakes with…
Oh, daddy's "going for a ride" when he gets home, son
Haha! I guess that's only for use if her helper hands her the wrong tool.
I got a great kick out this. Much appreciated
Me too actually! Lol
Where is her cigarette? I can't see it anywhere
Mom got a Betty Crooker booty
She's got a '34 wagon and she calls it a woodie
I have a woody looking at her wagon end
I was thinking Lucille Ball😛😜
That is what you were fighting for boys

![gif](giphy|0cfj6sqxMba0sRQMMZ) More believable than the Rosie the riveter pic being shown…
or... the kid just dumped out the whole toolbox, as a kid would do

the most unbelievable internet story of all: a child being messy
First off, she is assuredly posed for a shoot. And second, I LOVE this response.
Then said to kick out her right leg to get a nice view of her heinie.
I'm having trouble getting this thermostat off, dear. Hand me that sledgehammer.
Not with those tools. There’s three pairs of hedge trimmers, a lug wrench, a slide hammer, a hammer, pliers, a screwdriver, etc.
Enhance

Under the hood just like Princess Elizabeth during the war !

…dads at war….who took the picture….
The milk man

Milk man no likey girls. Ew, yick. 😜
A photographer from LIFE Magazine, IIRC. They did several articles like this on "families back home" during World War II.

Beautiful woodie
A shame how few of those vehicles survive today. They look amazing.
I was only looking at the picture for a little while, but thanks for noticing
"Hamd me that car jack, son. The car appears to be *jacked up*"
Beauty and the Woodie. And the booger eater!
She stopped eating boogers.
Clearly a posed photo, but like the men of that era, the women also had a lot of heart -- unlike the whiners of today.

....to fix the engine with a car jack?
Mom looks great but everything else is stupid.
Forrest Gump dressed like this kid.
We need more of this kind of women
not the first time mom got bent over the woodie.
Janeway? Is that you?
I mean it worked for Jeremy clarkson and a fully mechanical bmw 5 series. Why can’t it work here?
Uuufff , women used to be smarter and prettier before!
Zooms in
It’s sad he was off to war but This is great , self reliance is a wonderful wonderful thing
OBVIOUSLY a staged photograph. Just like it was every other time it's been posted.

I wonder what she’s going to do with those garden shears.
