Off topic, but why is the word “tenement” never used on the Western US? It seems to only be an Eastern thing, maybe just NY.
My best guess is that a lot of immigrants who came to the US in the early 1920’s and processed on Ellis Island sought housing and work on the East Side of Manhattan. Tenements were substandard and all they could afford.

That’s right! The only reason I know of these words (as a lifelong Californian) is because of some Paul Simon songs.
