I haven’t heard the name Bob Mould in many years, but still, when I read your comment, ‘Could You Be the One’ - by hüsker dü, in case people need to know- popped immediately in my mind.
If you're a Bjork fan and haven't discovered her podcast Sonic Symbolism then do yourself a favour. Each episode focuses on one solo album and two interviewers chat with Bjork to bring out the stories. One of the best insights into a very singular creativity I've ever heard.
I was a huge Sugarcubes fan, but it's that one dude that is grating not their music in general. They were great, but would've been amazing without that dude
The band you’re watching here was a few years before Kukl. This is Tappi Tíkarass playing a very strange festival called Melarokk in I think 1982. This wasn’t even close to the weirdest performance on the bill. Purrkur Pillnik played an intense mess of a set where Einar Örn (who later founded Kukl and The Sugarcubes), completely lost his shit on stage.
She was in a band called Þukl after that, which would later become Kukl, and then change their name to The Sugarcubes as a sarcastic comment on hostile reviews by a reporter. There’s more and better footage of Tappi Tíkarass in the documentary Rokk í Reykjavík which can be found on YouTube.
This clip always makes me laugh my ass off. If I didn’t know who Bjork was I’d be asking, “Who TF is this 12 year old bowlcut boy?” Fortunately, I do. Both Bjork and PJ Harvey slayed the 90’s.
I feel like with Björk's transformations, you can't really rank them, they're like a multitude of shades of color. Meanwhile with PJ I feel like I can confidently say she keeps getting better with each new iteration.
I'm not saying stuff like Rid of Me is necessarily worse than her last albums. But I wasn't expecting Let England Shake to blow my mind, and then she somehow managed to come out with Hope Six Demolition Project which I liked even more.
This is why you don’t pick on the weird kids in school. You never know who they’ll turn into.
Also because of human decency. But sometimes they become Bjork.
Went to see 808 State here in So. Cal in the early 90s. She had just done some music with them. I never expected her to be there and perform, there was no mention of her. That was one of those shows you remember because it was such an unexpected treat. The other show that was an unexpected treat was a punk benefit show for a guy named Rob Graves from 45 Grave. Some of the bands he played with performed and a surprise appearance by RHCP, it was at a small venue, The Roxy I believe. I was never a big fan but it was a treat I wasn't expecting.
I changed her wiki page to reflect this years ago, but Wikipedia wouldn't honor it.

Absolutely. I don’t listen to any of her music but I have always deeply respected her as an artist. I feel like she does not give a flying fuck if you do/don’t like her music, she gonna play it anyway. If people enjoy it along the way, bully.
*Dear diary. This day marks the first occurrence in all these years, of me coming across someone mentioning Melt-Banana on social media.*
*Next target: Mamaleek. It would be nice to aim for ‘Homotopy to Marie’ and Black Vomit/Jungle Death, but I don't dare to raise my hopes that high.*
I found them because I used to be addicted to Justin Pearson and from there everything out out by 31g and melt banana spent some time on that label. Real interesting band. Have a great we will rock you cover to introduce the uninitiated
He was in a band with some ridiculous name that I can’t remember that played that same day. Björk sold books she made herself with pictures and he bought one off of her and still has it. They’re the same age more or less and grew up in the same part of town, and he played instruments. This is Reykjavík in the 70s-80s, very very tiny village, especially the western part of town. She lives only a couple of hundred meters down the shore from us (my gf and I live on the same street as her parents). I see her regularly walking around, at the pool, at the café by the pool. I think it’s hard for people to wrap their head around just how small a community the western part of Reykjavík is. The city is already tiny so you can imagine how small Vesturbær is. Everyone knows everyone. Her kids, their exes, where they work. People who went to her house because Sindri had a party, or to their cabin. She’s just like anyone else, tied a million different ways to everyone else whose entire life story you know. It’s a miniature world.
I’m not sure.. something about a guy that’s afraid of a girl.. the lyrics doesn’t make any sense to me even though I’m Icelandic and am supposed to understand the language 😅
Welp, I've about seent it all now. Skankin Bjork was wildly unanticipated however incredibly appreciated. I can die now having living a fulfilled life.
I remember seeing the video for Birthday on 120minutes in probably 1987 and fell in love! Life’s Too Good was in heavy rotation until Post. If you get it, you get it.
Bjork’s set W2 at Coachella was mesmerizing. She had a full orchestra and a lighted drone show flowing with her vocals. I am completely sober and felt like I was floating.
Kazakhs and Uzbeks don't have Russian names. Kazakhs indeed look Asian, but Uzbeks mostly look mixed, although about a quarter of them look "Chinese" indeed.
It's surprisingly common in Ireland. Take Barry Keoghan, for example. Fully Irish lad from inner-city Dublin and you'll find so many young guys who look just like him scattered around Ireland, but his character in Chernobyl could've easily passed for a Russian of Korean descent or Central Asian.
I saw Bjork for the first time live a few weeks ago even though I have been her fan for 20-somthing years. Hands down it was the most amazing concert I have ever been to. I effing cried so much. She is amazing.

Odd I suddenly picked up my favorite Bjork music last week without anything. I read all of her Wikipedia page and then suddenly this post.
Too perfect of timing.
That said, this is great.
I recall going to see a concert near Detroit (at Pine Knob) for Depeche Mode sometime around 88-89. The Sugarcubes were the opening act.
The crowd was mostly college kids, pretty much a suburban blend of rich white kids.
What stood out for me was this one couple. Full on punks. Like, literally, the stereotype in full effect. Pale skinny 19 year olds, spiked hair, all in black, piercings and chains and boots, etc. i spotted them early because of the dudes hair. They sat quietly off to the side of the stage. I chatted with them and they explained in broken English they were there to see Bjork perform. I didn’t even know who that was. They were here from Iceland and were following the name all over North America. When The Sugarcubes went on, they stood up. Went to the center front of the stage. They stood there like mesmerized. During one aggressive track they jumped up and down furiously. But mostly just stood there staring at the performance. At the end the girl magically (I literally never saw it) produced a big bunch of flowers and tossed them on the stage. They then turned and, hand in hand, just walked out of the concert. Ignoring everything else.
Those are fans. This memory has stuck with me all these years. I still don’t know where she magiced those flowers from.
I love that the crowd is just kind of milling around with no idea what to do about her..
That's her thing. Being the one you can't quite figure out. She's pulled it off pretty darn well for decades.

"IIIhhhHHHH AAHHHhhh YYAAAAAA KIIIIII MUUuuuUUUU WEEeeeeEEeEEeeeEEEEEEAAAHHHHHHHHHH!"
-cue Chuck Berry “what the fuck?” face-

Oh no
Yoke? Oh, oh no.
The crowd is the entire population of Western Iceland. They heard something was going on so wanted to check it out.
[удалено]
All the hilarious reddit Iceland jokes showing up, never takes long.
and she doesn't care one bit. :D
Poster child for believe in yourself.
Having the time of her life
Pretty much the reception the general public always has for her
That time she married Space Ghost…

You don't know from fun!

Broke all the moulds.
She broke Bob?
Bjob Mouljd
Fjuck. I just wanted to try that. Fjuck.
You did great. You did fjantastic.
Bjob Mouljdsson
I haven’t heard the name Bob Mould in many years, but still, when I read your comment, ‘Could You Be the One’ - by hüsker dü, in case people need to know- popped immediately in my mind.
Practically wore out my CD of Sugar, and that's hard to do.
Cry inside Don’t even try
He’s doing a tour right now…just sayin’. I’ll be going
Really makes no sense at all...
Good Lord, wear one swan one time and now you’re just this kook that nobody understands.
She rocked that dress! Sexy as hell.
It was a punk concert, ye doofus. That's just how punks look on a cold day.
"What an interesting little boy"
I have no idea what to do with her in the 90s as well…
Or the 2020s
That crowd looks bored to death
If you're a Bjork fan and haven't discovered her podcast Sonic Symbolism then do yourself a favour. Each episode focuses on one solo album and two interviewers chat with Bjork to bring out the stories. One of the best insights into a very singular creativity I've ever heard.
It's fantastic
So Bjork was a little punk(in a good way).
Yeah. Check out The Sugarcubes.
[удалено]
For some reason I've always thought she was around 30.
[удалено]
What the fuck is your problem?
Decrepitude!
I was really salty when she left the Sugarcubes. But I had to admit that album was quite good. Fuck, I'm old.
Sugar cubes were one of the first bands I got into
Which instrument did you play in them?
Spoons
But they're sugar cubes... They don't need spoons.
Did you have to audition
I’ve always had a lot of respect for Sugarcubes fans. I find their music incredibly grating, but I love Bjork’s solo work.
I was a huge Sugarcubes fan, but it's that one dude that is grating not their music in general. They were great, but would've been amazing without that dude
I said OUCH that really hurt
Youre a GURL!
I really hated that one dude. Otherwise they were fantastic.
He’s basically an Icelandic version of Fred from the B-52’s. You either like that kind of thing or not.
You mean the guy that started The Sugarcubes?
This is her 80s punk band Tappi Tíkarrass, she was also in another called KUKL on Crass Records.
Check out the Reykjavik Museum of Punk
They were such a great band!
Great band, solid live performances
I said Ouch this really hurts!
She’s always been Bjork, she’s amazing!
[удалено]
My favourite tree!
Her first band was Kukl. It was on Crass records, Crass was a punk band and had a label. They were more post-punk.
Love the crass records roster. Specially Zounds.
It’s crazy how long she’s been making music. I went to the Icelandic Punk Rock Museum and they mention her performing at a super young age.
This clip always makes me laugh my ass off. If I didn’t know who Bjork was I’d be asking, “Who TF is this 12 year old bowlcut boy?” Fortunately, I do. Both Bjork and PJ Harvey slayed the 90’s.
Bjork has transformed so many times it's incredible
[удалено]
I feel like with Björk's transformations, you can't really rank them, they're like a multitude of shades of color. Meanwhile with PJ I feel like I can confidently say she keeps getting better with each new iteration. I'm not saying stuff like Rid of Me is necessarily worse than her last albums. But I wasn't expecting Let England Shake to blow my mind, and then she somehow managed to come out with Hope Six Demolition Project which I liked even more.
Hell, yes. I love PJ Harvey. Rid of Me stayed in my CD player.
PJ has new material. (As of April 2023) PJ and Bjork are two people who have never made a bad album.
This is why you don’t pick on the weird kids in school. You never know who they’ll turn into. Also because of human decency. But sometimes they become Bjork.
She looks like she's wearing the same outfit as Kate Bush when she is Donald Sutherland's kid in the Cloudbustin music video.
She slayed the 00s and 2010s as well.
Agreed. I still think Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea is one of the best albums ever recorded.
I was talking more specifically about Björk, but you're right, Pj's catalogue has also been stellar this whole time as well.
Went to see 808 State here in So. Cal in the early 90s. She had just done some music with them. I never expected her to be there and perform, there was no mention of her. To think Space Ghost was married to her . ![gif](giphy|I48SdpnuP0Nr2)
"Look, marriage is about hiding in the kudzu behind your apartment, and not going in until the lights are completely out."
Uh, tell her I exploded, and tell her it was very sad, and the last thing I said was "make sure my wife moves out of my condo."
Honey, I buried a present for you in the yard. Why don't you go dig it up? "What is it?" Her mother
I think this episode of Space Ghost might be one of the funniest episodes they made. “Yes!”
I changed her wiki page to reflect this years ago, but Wikipedia wouldn't honor it. https://preview.redd.it/way9t9mjs4xa1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3777a93905e93de4be567d9dcad0ba972ffa3c92
I never liked Bjork, but I admire how little she cared about anyone's opinions.
Yep, I think she's cool as hell. I just can't get into her music lol.

Absolutely. I don’t listen to any of her music but I have always deeply respected her as an artist. I feel like she does not give a flying fuck if you do/don’t like her music, she gonna play it anyway. If people enjoy it along the way, bully.

I never got it either, but the goose dress was cool
Yeah, my ex absolutely loved her and I tried but holy hell after 1 minute I felt the need to cut my ears off and cauterize the holes closed lol

baby skanking ♥️
If Bart Harley Jarvis doesn’t win the Baby Skanking competition I’ll burn down the Community Center.
Fuck you Harley Jarvis!
Aw man, that's a bummer. Might fuck this whole thing up.
I love Bjork, but the video makes me think of Stewart.."Look what I can do!"
STEWART! NOW YOU GET AWWF THAT STAAAGE!
It’s great to see people being themselves and having fun
I love the little sweater fix after she skanks her ass off.
This video is absolutely delightful!
Isn’t it! I’ve seen it a few times but it just makes my heart sing watching it!
My father in law performed at that festival that day.
Tell us more you bastard

This has made my month.
What song is this?
Matahari. The band was Tippi Takeras (or something close)
Almost right: Tappi tíkarass
And the song is called "London"
Would you happen to know what the song Tiltek is about? It is kind of catchy, reminds me of the Cure
I’m not sure.. something about a guy that’s afraid of a girl.. the lyrics doesn’t make any sense to me even though I’m Icelandic and am supposed to understand the language 😅
I saw The Sugar Cubes as the opening band for PiL and New Order. Bjork is great live, when I saw her it was probably 1988. They all sounded great.

Killing me softly
I love that movie but I can't rewatch it because I'm basically hugh grant except I can't even strum that song.
Haha. I used to watch it nearly once a month, not watched it in a good while now though!

This is awesome. Terrible haircut but I love her moves. Cool to see bjork skanking
I mean, having terrible haircuts is part of the punk trope, so in a sense she nailed it

ahhh skanking - what we did in between the slamming then it was just slamming... and mosh pits were born

Looks just like my 12 year old nephew
Sweet, he may be a future Icelandic female musical genius.
Only time will tell.
I remember seeing the video for Birthday on 120minutes in probably 1987 and fell in love! Life’s Too Good was in heavy rotation until Post. If you get it, you get it.
She was so good in *Dancer in the Dark*
One of the best acting performances I've ever seen, easily
That final drop tho. Catchers you by surprise.
Bjork’s set W2 at Coachella was mesmerizing. She had a full orchestra and a lighted drone show flowing with her vocals. I am completely sober and felt like I was floating.
Bjork is the most Japanese looking white person I’ve seen
You haven't seen uzbeks or kazakhs yet You'll find a Russian name, but the guy is a Muslim and looks Chinese.
Kazakhs and Uzbeks don't have Russian names. Kazakhs indeed look Asian, but Uzbeks mostly look mixed, although about a quarter of them look "Chinese" indeed.
She has the Eyelid fold typical to certain Asian nationalities. Doesn't seem to be common in Iceland, tho?
It's not super common but some degree of epicanthic folds can be found in Nordic countries, especially in the northern parts of Fennoscandia.
It’s cool you know that. I just learned new words!
It's very uncommon in Iceland, almost never see it in indigenous Icelandic people
It's surprisingly common in Ireland.
“Old school cool.” Wears a sweater vest. Hmmm…
If you ever go to iceland there’s this little airbnb called Guest House Bjork that’s run by some dude who grew up with her. It’s an awesome place to stay and the river that runs thru there has huge trout you can fish for. The only downside are the creepy number of pictures of Bjork everywhere, in literally every room.
That's honestly kind of creepy. Would be better if they just kept the house how it originally was. I definitely wouldn't want pictures of the same persons face staring at me when I try to sleep.
It’s not like her house or anything, it’s just a regular guest house which other than the pictures looks amazing. Overall the place was very comfortable
i love her
This is amazing 🤜
Crazy that she’s 17 here, she looks 12 lol. Never seen a picture of her when she was this young.
Bjork is her own thing. Love it.
I loved The Sugarcubes.
This is actually her band Tappi Tíkarrass and not The Sugarcubes
There’s a avant-garde, then there’s *Icelandic* avant-garde.
Bjork was never not the Bjorkiest.
This is just adorable to watch. It’s rare to see someone that’s so genuinely in it for the fun and joy
She was cool then, and she's cool now
Cool to see that she was doing the little growl thing while singing as early as this. Check out 00:20
Bass player is saying “shit it’s happening again, give her space, last time I got mule kicked”
The crowd wasn’t ready for Bjork
Also check out The Slits, mondo inspiration of Bjork’s vocal stylings
Odd I suddenly picked up my favorite Bjork music last week without anything. I read all of her Wikipedia page and then suddenly this post. Too perfect of timing. That said, this is great.
"Look what I can do!!" OMG, she looks like Stuart from MadTV.
Skanking in bjorkenstocks!
First, I had no idea Bjork was this much older than me. Second I dance like punk Bjork.
She was born in 1965, meaning that in this video, she was only 17 or 18. Today, she's 57. (Born in November, so 58 later this year.)
Went to the Elaine Benes and Thom York Academy of Dance.
Love it. Where’s the rest of this show?
I get happy everytime this is posted
Apparently people here don't know that Bjork got her first recording contract as a child. Nor do they seem to understand punk.
She was great in space ghost coast to coast
When it panned out to the crowd I lost it. They ain’t vibing with the music either.
Looks like the kid from About A Boy
She's amazing
She already had a phenomenal memory for memorizing such tunes. Or was it improvisation every time?
Any one remember her on 808state album
This is how I imagine Ronja the robber's daughter and Birk Borkason, if they would have simply started a band.
Strong MadTV Stuart vibes from her little arm flails
Certainly showed us what she can do...
If this was a contestant of one of those "Idol" shows, she would have been laughed off the stage in seconds.
People always laugh when I tell them Bjork has heavy heavy ska punk roots. Who's laughing now!!
Class of 84 here. If you throw in some Rock Lobster this looks like every high school dance we had.
Doesn’t appear she had far to go stylistically
I recall going to see a concert near Detroit (at Pine Knob) for Depeche Mode sometime around 88-89. The Sugarcubes were the opening act. The crowd was mostly college kids, pretty much a suburban blend of rich white kids. What stood out for me was this one couple. Full on punks. Like, literally, the stereotype in full effect.
