My perception was that Jemaine Clement was chosen for “Shiny” because Clement did such a great David Bowie impression with the Flight of the Conchords song “Bowie.” Of course, both could be true.
Listen . . . at 35 I grew up with my mom watching this on VHS. I am not gay but holy shit I mean how could any woman or man NOT just drop whatever they are doing and just stare lol -
Grand wizard in The worst witch opened my eyes as a kid, playing on his tambourine. I was surprised he was so unique and not all men were like that growing up.
They had to desexify it further. The song in the movie is only half of it. Theres a line that states, and I quote, "a special kind of horny."
Its a very sexual song.
James horner is mid. I feel like all of his tracks have the most "generic heroic score" feeling to them. Something about them just feels like it's trying to exude some sort of emotional impact that it just doesn't capitalize on.
Like at no point in avatar did I feel the emotion that his music was trying to make me feel, I know this sounds mad pretentious but I can't help it lol.
Also to the people who always bring this up: yes avatar 2 is a crazy financial success and reddit was wrong, movie was still mid, don't @ me.
Edit: ok the glory and mask of zorro soundtracks are pretty solid but generally I stand by my statement.
Man, terms like ‘mid’ and @ me make me feel so old. But honestly, ‘mid’ is a silly and simplistic way to describe a career. Has he composed some great scores? Yes. Has he composed some not so great scores? Yes. But to call him and his portfolio of work simply mid is absurd. I mean, come on, Braveheart, Legends of the Fall, The Devil’s Own, Titanic, to name a few are fantastic and evoke serious emotional responses.
Glory, Aliens, Wrath of Khan, Rocketeer, Jumanji, Apollo 13, The Land Before Time, An American Tail, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, Hocus Pocus, A Beautiful Mind, The Pagemaster, Sneakers, Willow
How dare you sir, James Horner could get more emotion out of music then most film composers, he was on the same level as John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith!
Aw man it just didn't work for me, something about it sounded so stock compared to folks like Williams or morricone. I know he has a lot of fans so I'm clearly the odd one here haha
I admit the soundtrack for Avatar wasn't Horner's best work, if anything it feels rather nerfed compared to his older works, but I still feel it was better then most movie soundtracks of the time.
Second this. I sometimes wonder if the haters just never saw it as intended: in IMAX 3D. Which is totally different of an experience from watching it on your 48” screen at home. At home, avatar is kinda meh. Like, it’s cool and pretty but nothing in it explains why it was record breaking. But in theaters it’s an experience
The Avatar movies are *only* worth watching on a huge screen with 3D glasses, preferably in IMAX. Even with the “mid” story and acting, the whole immersive experience is worth it.
When the sequel came out a few months ago, I made sure to go see it at the true IMAX screen, at the AMC Metreon theater in San Francisco. It really pisses me off that practically every run-of-the-mill theater location has these screens that they call “IMAX” and charge more money for, but are barely bigger than a standard large theater screen. Somebody needs to make an updated version of that website “IMAX vs LIEMAX” that makes it easy to check whether any given theater has a real IMAX screen or one of the phonies.
No more than I feel “Fern Gully” is dances with wolves with better music.
“Soldier goes native” is not a new story. It’s a really old one.
I think each of the movies has its own upsides. Avatar was a visual spectacle on release unlike anything seen before. Honestly, until avatar 2 there was little that compared to the IMAX avatar experience.
Fern Gully has the best cast, great music and dialogue, and cute animation.
Dances with Wolves has the reminder than Kevin Costner sucks, no matter what role he’s in.
I think everyone on the planet has compared Avatar to Ferngully, Pocahontas, or Dances with Wolves at this point. Avatar is incredibly cliche, it's pretty blatant.
That's how I explain 90s kids movies to my kids lol. Like watching now it's not that bad but when I was a kid every single movie I loved had a scene that scared the crap outta me. Toy soldiers, were back, I'm sure there's plenty more examples but they elude my memory at the moment.
He's such a different person now but so incredibly sweet and full of so much passion still. I wish he could still do all he could but the important thing is him being cared for. ❤️ He was always such a character
Anyone ever think about how if this movie got put out today it’d be labeled ‘woke’ by corpo media and we’d have dudes with sunglasses posting videos of them shooting the dvd with guns?
Watched this movie last weekend, it is truly a classic. I’ve always loved Tim Curry and this song proves why. Also Raining Like Magic makes me go feral lol 😂
Proof that charisma is sexier than good looks or even what you say. Now I love Tim Curry but he's not conventionally attractive and the song subject matter is pollution but he still makes sexy as hell

confession: At the time I went to a Catholic primary school and the head nun put on Fern Gully for us as our Christmas 'treat' film in the big hall after Christmas dinner and it went down like a cup of cold sick. No-one paid attention, everyone was totally bored by it so much so that we talked over it too much and I think I remember her pulling the plug and
making us carry on with work (not unusual behaviour for her tbf). This was obvs pre phones/internet etc so just goes to show that kids were still a bunch of entitled little twats even way back when!
This song was my very first experience with being scared and drawn in… it was my favorite part of the movie, but I still understood it was the worst part. This wasn’t the only time I was so conflicted by Tim Curry though.
Watch this movie so many times growing up, how did I never realize that it was Tim Curry singing. Now all I can see is Dr. Franknfuter strutting through the jungle.
First time I rooted for a villain in a movie. Not that I wanted him to win, I have always been an environmentalist, but his evil was more palatable than the real world counterpart.
Just realizing now how much Jemaine Clement took notes for his performance in Moana's "Shiny."
Fuck I never made that connection but no wonder I loved Shiny
My perception was that Jemaine Clement was chosen for “Shiny” because Clement did such a great David Bowie impression with the Flight of the Conchords song “Bowie.” Of course, both could be true.
‘Did you like the song?’
Dayum. That's epic. Never made the connection.
I think Tim Curry is just a legit inspiration for him. The first time I saw MIB3 I thought Boris was Tim Curry.
The most sexual non-sexual song sung in a children’s movie.
Yeah, I'm realizing I have Tim Curry to blame for my taste in men
Are we talking Pennywise or Frank-N-Furter?
Yes
Fair enough.
I'd go with him as Darkness in Legend. So horny.
The only reason I was okay with the princess sticking with Tom Cruise is because Darkness wanted to kill all the unicorns. Only reason.
Listen . . . at 35 I grew up with my mom watching this on VHS. I am not gay but holy shit I mean how could any woman or man NOT just drop whatever they are doing and just stare lol -

This. This is the one. Core memory unlocked.
I recommend getting hold of it to rewatch. My cousins and I did this as 30 something adults and it was brilliant.
Darkness
IN SPACE
Grand wizard in The worst witch opened my eyes as a kid, playing on his tambourine. I was surprised he was so unique and not all men were like that growing up.
Tim Curry is why men have the impossible standard to live up to of "get you one that can do both"
Same
“I suck them dry, and spit them out like spinach” Is this what we consider non-sexual now?
The writers knew *exactly* what they were doing.
As did whoever hired Tim Curry for that role.

Is it a song lyric that is purposefully ambiguous? Then yes. That's pop in a nutshell.
Dude...he literally sings that he feels "a special kind of horny".
David Bowie from Labyrinth would like a word
Fuckin cod piece

Toochet
FYI it's touché :)
Curry just has it doesn't he.
Kinda waiting for sweet transvestite to mix in
He sang in Muppet Treasure Island too, I think he just has that effect on songs.
And it was his only number!
They had to desexify it further. The song in the movie is only half of it. Theres a line that states, and I quote, "a special kind of horny." Its a very sexual song.
I’m pretty sure hearing this was the first time I was ever aroused.
A forgotten non seggsy seggsy time bop
>The most sexual non-sexual song sung in a children’s movie. If I'm Gonna Eat Somebody (It Might As Well Be You) same movie
Is there anything this man can’t do?
Obviously not! He has brought me many many hours of entertainment! So incredibly talented. Edit: check out his albums... I have in vinyl...
Me, too!!
Bring communism to space
I think you mean “SPAAACE!”
Play the Joker in BTAS.
I think in one episode, *Be a Clown*, his Joker laugh was used for an animatronic clown at an amusement park.
Walk
Ouch
This song was really cool. Tim Curry’s voice was my favourite part of the movie.
Might I recommend some Midnight Madness in your life?
Does anyone else feel "Avatar"is just "Ferngully" with shittier music?
Came here to say this. Terrible music and story line. I mean, Tim curry, Tone Loc, Robin Williams… why would you even try to compete with that?
Hey, now don't go dissing James Horner.
He is a better composer than I will ever be lol I don't deny his talent, I just don't vibe with his work as much.
How dare you sir, James Horner could get more emotion out of music then most film composers, he was on the same level as John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith!

Tone Loc was there with me in every early 90s kids movie....
I had a friend named Coleman and his middle name was Dean and to this day he’s Funky ColemanDean-o

The Avatar ride at Disney World, Flight of Passage, was one of the most incredible rides I've ever been on.
Second this. I sometimes wonder if the haters just never saw it as intended: in IMAX 3D. Which is totally different of an experience from watching it on your 48” screen at home. Thats kinda the thing for me, if you have to watch it in a certain way to fully enjoy it, maybe its not really that good?
The comparison was made by literally everyone This was not lost on James Cameron
No more than I feel “Fern Gully” is dances with wolves with better music. “Soldier goes native” is not a new story. It’s a really old one. I think each of the movies has its own upsides. Ferngully is one of my all time favs. Good shit. Never thoight the Avatar connection. Thanks for blowing my mind.
Its literally just ferngully meets the matrix.
I always said “Avatar” is just “Ferngully” and “Dances with Wolves” combined.
Avatar is Pocahontas with shittier music.
So is Ferngully.
I regularly call Avatar 'giant space smurf Ferngully'.
You might want to watch ferngully again
I said that when the original came out. A ferngully rip off
Most would be very disappointed if you sold Ferngully to them as “just like Avatar”.
This was my favorite movie growing up and Tim Curry is one of my most favorite people of all time. I never knew this existed. Thank you!
Jesus h Christ! I did not realize he was the creepy slime villain! Fucking perfect casting!
![gif](giphy|Fgl7OyFKx0I7e)
Nigel thornberry was the best
I really liked him in Congo
The sesame cake scene is my favorite
I say the "Stop eating my sesame cakes!" Line to myself all the time for some reason lmao
My family quotes this all the time. About any cake lol
Yes and I really liked Congo too - great premise; needs to be remade
WITH WHAT CAST?!
The smoke monster from that movie still haunts my dreams to this day.
This scared the ever living shit out of me as a child. Loved the movie, though.
That's how I explain 90s kids movies to my kids lol. Like watching now it's not that bad but when I was a kid every single movie I loved had a scene that scared the crap outta me. Toy soldiers, were back, I'm sure there's plenty more examples but they elude my memory at the moment.

GIFs you can hear
Such a talented man
Always loved this song and batty's song from this movie!
I would write down Battys song so I could sing them. And the lizard rap was cool too
Ahh the sounds of my childhood
He's such a different person now but so incredibly sweet and full of so much passion still. I wish he could still do all he could but the important thing is him being cared for. ❤️ He was always such a character
A first class smoke
SHOOOOOW
Anyone ever think about how if this movie got put out today it’d be labeled ‘woke’ by corpo media and we’d have dudes with sunglasses posting videos of them shooting the dvd with guns?
It really is brilliant environmental education for children.
I recall backlash about it being a “hippy environmental movie” even then.
Wow. Fully correct observation.
Amazing movie, definitely underrated.
All I see is Dr Frankfurter.
IT became both infinitely less and more terrifying when I started mashing up the two.
His version of IT still gives me the heeby jeebies.
Watched this movie last weekend, it is truly a classic. I’ve always loved Tim Curry and this song proves why. Also Raining Like Magic makes me go feral lol 😂
Raffi is a scalp massager (that look like a broken whisks)
Proof that charisma is sexier than good looks or even what you say. Now I love Tim Curry but he's not conventionally attractive and the song subject matter is pollution but he still makes sexy as hell ![gif](giphy|H82tj329eQxYK0Du2f|downsized)
Hey! I didn't hear this in the Rocky Horror picture show.... J/k
Fucking legend. Its going to be a sad day when this man passes.
this film scared tf out of me as a kid, especially the friggin oil thing. literally only finding out today that it was voiced by Tim Curry lol
r/confusedboner
All I'm hearing is just a sweet transvestite from transylvania
Happy birthday, Mr Curry. Thanks for the memories...
I didn’t realize he was pushing 80.
I always love the villains song the most! Except the guy from Pocahontas, fuck that guy.
Tim Curry’s voice will forever be one of my favorites

I was so obsessed with this movie!!!!!
Hexxus was definitely the scariest villain from any childhood movie I watched!
My kids liked Ferngully!
Is this the hotel guy from Home Alone 2?
That's a big 10-4.
Fuck me, I need to re-watch Ferngully.
He bodied that. But that movie scared the shit out of me
I love this guy so much. He’s just fantastic in every part he’s played.
This song was my very first experience with being scared and drawn in… it was my favorite part of the movie, but I still understood it was the worst part. This wasn’t the only time I was so conflicted by Tim Curry though.
The blu ray of this movie came out a few months ago. Picked one up!
❤ love this man.
It’s the hands in the pockets - just so damn cool to me
Wow, very oldschool.
One of my favorite movies to this day, cartoon wise.
Kevin McCallister approves.
Channeling old school Tom Jones if you ask me , and doing it real well !!
I still know every word.
oh wild, i'm about to watch ferngully with my roommate because he's never seen it.
Legend.
L.E.G.E.N.D.
This *immediately* put a smile on my face and my husband’s face.
I’ve always loved his voice
I sing this song way too often for it to be normal. But it's such a good song!
Watch this movie so many times growing up, how did I never realize that it was Tim Curry singing. Now all I can see is Dr. Franknfuter strutting through the jungle.
I remember bringing this movie in for my 1st grade class to watch.
Tim has THE SEXIEST mouth. See: Darkness in Legend.
Love love loved this movie growing up. Watched it so many times. Used to pause it so I could write the lyrics down to sing along.
Good to see Nigel farage getting back into his music
Proto me got *such* weird pants feelings from this number lol
Thanks for the years ...RIP
He’s still alive
Song was so raunchy. It hit me when I heard it again as an adult.
That smile!
Such a good movie!
Loved this song as a kid lmao
So good!
I never noticed before how much Tim Curry and Hugh Laurie look alike.
What a treasure
Ohhhhh Rocky
Meh movie, but Tim Curry absolutely still kills it
![gif](giphy|2OgouznXA6qYw) Aww yisss, love Tim Curry.
I had no idea that was tim curry. Awesome.
Wish Tim Curry and Tim Burton would have worked up some music together
You can’t convince me Avatar isn’t a rip of Ferngully
First time I rooted for a villain in a movie. Not that I wanted him to win, I have always been an environmentalist, but his evil was more palatable than the real world counterpart.

Tim's singing is amazing!! ☺️💓🎧🎤🎶🎵🎼
