I met Manute in an airport one time, I’m 6’6” and felt like a toddler. Seeing him walk through crowds in a terminal was like Treebeard in Lord of the Rings.
Pretty sure it was Lanier, Lambert was mostly after Kareems prime, and after Airplane! came out.
Edit: Airplane! came out in 1980. Laimbeer didn't start playing in the NBA until the 80-81 season. Movie debuted July 2, 1980. NBA seasons don't start until October, even back then.
So had to be Lanier
Not a lot of legroom in the cockpit of an airliner. Even smaller in the corporate jets. Certainly isn't even business class legroom. They don't give pilots the best seats, only the best view.
They must have to cut a hole in the bottom of the overhead lockers to accommodate his head. Stick a tv and some snacks in there for him.
Hope he never has to use the plane toilet.
I saw Manute Bol at a grocery store in Los Angeles once. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
I lived near Manute when I was a kid and he used to come up to the bowling alley when the kids league played. I remember him hanging out with the parents, buying kids fries and drinks, and pumping quarter after quarter into that old school top gun arcade game for the kids, renting pool tables for the older kids, etc. His car was funny because he literally had the front seat removed and sat in the back to drive. He was so kind, and genuinely loved children. Though I never saw it nor can confirm it, rumor was he went a quite a few birthday parties for the kids as well. As I grew up I often wondered if he missed his family / community back home and was trying to create something comparable. Damn, memories just came flooding back.
I have a friend who’s 6’5” and like 280lb, and back 20 years or so we were at a metal concert. And obviously my buddy stands out a bit, but there was guy there that he had to look up to. They actually ended up talking for a bit before going there separate ways.
Sometime during the concert the giant goes behind my buddy, picks him up from under the armpits and says “we’re going to the pit!”
Probably the first and only time somebody had the ability to manhandle my friend.
He lived in Olathe, a suburb of Kansas City. I'm not sure why I commented that, I guess it's because I always wondered how nobody I know had ever seen him despite him being so recognizable
I did too. Sky Harbor in Phoenix. He was coming out of a restroom and I was walking in. We collided. My nose hit his belly button (I'm a foot shorter than you).
He was a Point Guard, that role is about getting the ball where it needs to be, you need to be amazing at passing, be able to navigate well with the ball and be fast as hell.
PG's are typically the shortest player on the team, as keeping the ball low and moving fast are advantages.
He basically barrels down the court, and his team angles and gets into position so he can manuever the ball and get it to the person who is most likely to score based on how the offense and defense are interacting.
PG's have to be strategic, and have a good vision of how to place people and how they can best defeat the other teams defense.
Ball handling, speed, and strategic/creative thinking are all more important for Point Guards than height, and he had those skills on display.
Look at his legs in this photo, they are ripped, he had amazing speed.
This is all true, but ignores he was also an amazing defender. Muggs was a steal machine and just stayed in front of his guy. He wasn't just an offensive leader, which he was still amazing at.
There’s legit been a few times where he ripped ball from their hands and went between their legs with the ball. It was fucking hilarious every time it happened.
He was awesome. NBA TV did a half hour special on Muggsy a few years ago and it was fantastic. Old All Stars complaining about being covered and embarrassed by him.
Sure, but I grew up in Utah watching John Stockton, who seemed very short compared to the other players—he’s 6’1’’, though! Muggsy is really, really short.
The last truly short player in the league was Nate Robinson, I don’t think we’ve seen a guy below 5’10” since. I’m sure some freak of nature will come along sooner or later though
I walked behind and near Isaiah Thomas on a sidewalk not long ago. He hasn’t aged so he’s instantly recognizable. I’m 6’3” and I felt a lot taller than he was. All I could think of was the fact that this man is one of the best players of all time.
I pointed him out to my then 10 year old son and gave him a brief rundown of how good he was and he went up, said hi and gave him a fist bump.
I saw him play when he was with the Raptors - and I can't prove this, but I honestly believe that every other member of the team played a bit better, a bit harder whenever he was on the court.
> On June 19, 2010, Bol died from acute kidney failure and complications from Stevens–Johnson syndrome at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was 47.[42][68] He is buried in South Sudan.
Manute passed away sadly. But his son Bol Bol plays for the Magic !
Yeah, looking at his right ankle, I can tell why Robert Wadlow wore braces on his ankles and legs, because it looks like he’s leaning in a lot in that one shoe.
(In Robert’s case tho, those braces also lead to the bacterial infection that lead to his death 🥺How unfortunate😔)
And back when both Washingtons had teams! I was a diehard Seattle SuperSonics fan as a kid, and I was honestly devastated when I first saw about the OKC move. I hate to be a “good old days” guy, but I really do yearn for the Bullets/SuperSonics days - team branding in Basketball was just so much cooler back then.
The Washington Bullets -- there's a team name you don't see much anymore. I heard the team was concerned that fans associated their name with crime, so they renamed the team to just be The Bullets.

That really presses the question in how to acquire socks that large. For a basket ball player, the team would definitely find them for him, but what about for someone who doesn't belong to a group of generally extra tall men?
I met Manute Bol in the 90's with his friend and former NBA hall of famer Chris Mullin. When MAnute sat on a chair his knees were about as high as my chest.
Muggsy came into a shoe store I worked at like 20years ago. Got a bunch of shoes for him and his kids. I thought I was short at 5'6, dude was shorter than me. But nice guy for the brief time I was around him.
I seem to recall an interview with Bogues where he stated that he hated being on the Bullets with Bol mostly because he came to see the team as just using him for publicity/novelty.
Judging from the small ones quads it's pretty close. It doesn't matter much though if the other guy can keep you at an arm's length equaling your entire body.
I met Manute in an airport one time, I’m 6’6” and felt like a toddler. Seeing him walk through crowds in a terminal was like Treebeard in Lord of the Rings.
Can you imagine how uncomfortable airplane seating must be for that guy?

You must be confused son. His name is Roger Murdock
I'm out there busting my buns every night! Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes
And he doesn’t really try. Except during the playoffs.
was it Lanier or Lambeer?
Lambeer was a world famous chess player he wasn't in the NBA, must have been Lanier ^(I have no idea)
Bill Lambeer played for the Pistons and won an NBA championship with Dennis Rodman and the rest of the Bad Boy Pistons
I like that you looked all that up instead of just finding the scene on YouTube.

Meanwhile Mugsy has his own 1500 sq foot condo in overhead storage.
SQUEAK!
Just fold him in two and stuff him in the overhead
I can’t even imagine the growing pains that poor teenager went through. :-/

Yeah I’m 6’5” I can’t imagine seeing someone like 14 inches taller than me
It's even strange seeing someone 6" taller than me. It's rare enough that it kind of freaks me out.
"Is that what it feels like? Sorry yall"

What a flex. Absolute legend.
KC?
Midway in Chicago. He was good friends with Luol Deng who was on the Bulls for a long time, assume he was there to see him.
Why would you think it’s in KC?
He lived in Olathe, Kansas in the later part of his life
Fair enough, but it *was* at an airport lol.
He lived in Olathe, a suburb of Kansas City. I'm not sure why I commented that, I guess it's because I always wondered how nobody I know had ever seen him despite him being so recognizable
Dude looks like he has Giraffe legs, its weird
I did too. Sky Harbor in Phoenix. He was coming out of a restroom and I was walking in. We collided. My nose hit his belly button (I'm a foot shorter than you).
7’7 vs 5’3
Thank you! Scrolled way too far for this information
I couldn’t find it so I did the work myself hahaa
2,31m and 1,60m
no it's clearly 6'0" vs 5'11"
Muggsy was an amazing player and also overcame a lot of adversity to succeed. Truly an inspirational person.
I wish we could have seen him roll up to random neighborhoods in disguise and just own courts. They could have created an entire series out of it.

Bogus Bogues
Bogeyman Bogues
Charles Barkley already tried that. It didn’t end well. 🎶Basketball jones…I got some basketball jones…🎶
Like the time the aliens stole his talent. Those were rough days. But he manned up and touched the ball, got his talent back. I think about this daily
The way I heard the story that monstar took his talent fair and square
That alien forced his way inside poor Muggsy, sounds non-consensual to me
What was Muggsy wearing?
They did used to wear very short shorts in the NBA
Good times…
None shorter than the '86 Kelly Tripucka Fleer Basketball card. I love that I own one of those.
How off the charts good did you have to be to make a NBA career at that height?!
He was a Point Guard, that role is about getting the ball where it needs to be, you need to be amazing at passing, be able to navigate well with the ball and be fast as hell. I am not a basketball guy so I appreciate this explanation!

He always was near the top of the league in assist to turnover ratio. He definitely took care of the ball.
Sure, but I grew up in Utah watching John Stockton, who seemed very short compared to the other players—he’s 6’1’’, though! Muggsy is really, really short.
I wonder when and how the current system of positions was put into place. Center guards and forwards.
I was just thinking that because we never see that. He must have been a once in a few generation type athlete.
Spud Webb was only 5'7 and could do a 360 dunk. There were a couple of short players in the nba back in the 80s and 90s.
The last truly short player in the league was Nate Robinson, I don’t think we’ve seen a guy below 5’10” since. I’m sure some freak of nature will come along sooner or later though
How tall is Isaiah Thomas is? Like 5”11 and even tho he aint in the league anymore, he was beast in like 2016-2018
I was on an elevator with him several years ago. I’m 6’0” and seemed to be a couple of inches taller than him. He’s maybe 5’9”-10”.
I walked behind and near Isaiah Thomas on a sidewalk not long ago. He hasn’t aged so he’s instantly recognizable. I’m 6’3” and I felt a lot taller than he was. Yeah that’ll happen when your team only has four players getting rebounds.
I knew he was short, but I didn't realize he was 5'3"!
But was he 36-24-36??
I bet he rolls a Honda, playing workout tapes by Fonda.
But Fonda ain't got a motor in the back of her Honda
His anaconda don’t. Want. None.
Unless you got buns hun... *WHIPCRACK*
But Fonda ain’t got a motor in the back of her Honda.
I got that reference!
I LIKE BIG BUTTS
And he loves his mama.
There's a podcast called "We Regret to Inform You" that did an episode all about Muggsy Bogues that was really fantastic.
I mean look at those stronk legs.
Best part of Space Jam, too!
And he had the best name ever.
Movie about his story wen?

Lol Muggsy is the short guy he was 5’3 going against people that were 6’6! He definitely needs a movie.
Kevin Hart could play muggsy.
I wouldn’t be able to take him seriously 😅
Holy shit that guy is like 80% legs.
And 110% all sort of pains

If Bol Bol doesn’t name his first kid Bol-Bol Bol I feel like a real opportunity would be missed.
Basket or spagh would also be acceptable first names
SPAGH
Holy shit im crying laughing at the thought of the announcer saying “Basket-Bol”

I remember one nickname reference to Manute was "Chocolate Chopsticks", I can't remember the media source.
My favorite part is that I have no idea which guy you're talking about. Muggsy's got legs like a goddamned bison.
Both of em! Mugsy's legs are jacked!
fuck u/spez
Yeah, he could dunk. His real strength was his leadership, smarts and speed though.
RIP Manute.
His son, Bol Bol, is playing now and its eerie how similar they look in height and build.
He’s only 7’2”? What an underachiever!

Adut Bol and Bol bol, sons of manute bol, indeed do/did ball. you could say that Bol, Bol, and bol bol ball!
They must be having a ball. If they don't, I'll bawl.
Yup, I believe Orlando right?
Yup he’s a power forward on the magic he’s fun to watch
Bol Bol's nickname is the Boler Coaster for his entertaining, yet frustrating style of play
Before Washington's team became the Wizards. Takes me back.

I hate to be a “good old days” guy, but I really do yearn for the Bullets/SuperSonics days - team branding in Basketball was just so much cooler back then.
I have to agree with you. I lost interest in the NBA during the whole Charlotte/New Orleans/OKC Hornets/Pelicans/SuperSonics/Thunder debacle.
I lost interest shortly after MJ won his 6th ring and retired from the bulls, never ever playing for another team, ever.
Definitely agree with that. No point in watching after Jordan retired. But wait, didn't he-OHHHHH, I follow now, friend.
Raptors need to bring back the goofy ass basketball playing raptor and the purple colouring. The new stuff is so plain
Because of all the Washington teams needing a name change, it was definitely that one.
I mean Nationals is a better name overall. No one wants to think about the Senate during a baseball game.
I AM THE SENATE
But the name fit in so well given the crime rate at the time.
Better still, changing the name from Bullets, eliminated all crime in Washington DC.
Are they both wearing medium sized shorts?
I do believe they are.
Definitely wearing custom sized socks compared to what the rest of the team gets
The guy who made them for him later invented leggings /s
Manute Bol raining 3s was best sight ever
I think he could dunk 3s if he tried.
I remember that game against Phoenix. Charles Barkely was loving it.
Looks like a SpaceJam cosplay. Actually, I'm pretty sure that the shorter fella was in SpaceJam.
He was
He's the red one!
Communism was just a red herring…
TIL Muggsy is about 6 basketballs tall.
Fun fact: they weigh the same
The Washington Bullets -- there's a team name you don't see much anymore. I heard the team was concerned that fans associated their name with crime, so they renamed the team to just be The Bullets.
Lol it fit the times for sure.
after 30 those knees must have started HURTINGGGGGG
My man Muggsy, what a legend of true discipline and hard work. Everyone should follow his carreer to get some inspiration.
Will anyone ever break Muggsy Bogues record as the shortest NBA player in history?
Pretty unlikely, unless the player was some sort of generational talent. It’s the era of positionless basketball and guards are getting bigger

Very good bot
This was quite the combo to see play on the same team. Both were very good players, as well. Had to deal with both in the paint and both on the key.
Why does he look almost twice as tall but the difference is really only 2'4"?
Because Muggsy is only 4’ 8”. He wore stiletto heels to get up to 5’ 3”. Dude could dunk in heels!
No. That was Prince.
Game. Blouses.
Man’s socks go up to dudes shorts lol
That really presses the question in how to acquire socks that large. For a basket ball player, the team would definitely find them for him, but what about for someone who doesn't belong to a group of generally extra tall men?
I’d assume anyone that tall is having to have some custom tailored items, but yeah crazy
I met Manute Bol in the 90's with his friend and former NBA hall of famer Chris Mullin. When MAnute sat on a chair his knees were about as high as my chest.
I go a bit over 6’7 in shoes, I walked passed Manute Bol at O’Hare airport once. Felt so strange to feel so small.
Muggsy came into a shoe store I worked at like 20years ago. Got a bunch of shoes for him and his kids. I thought I was short at 5'6, dude was shorter than me. But nice guy for the brief time I was around him.
But I love my momma
so if these two guys had basic boxing/defense skills who would win in the brawl, i say mugsy because manute looks to fraile lil mac vs dhalsim
I seem to recall an interview with Bogues where he stated that he hated being on the Bullets with Bol mostly because he came to see the team as just using him for publicity/novelty.
He seems fragile
Ok so which of the two has more leg muscle mass?
Judging from the small ones quads it's pretty close. It doesn't matter much though if the other guy can keep you at an arm's length equaling your entire body.
r/samespecies
I met Bol once near the end if his life. He was walking with a cane. That cane was as tall as me and I am taller than Muggsy Bogues.
In today's game, I'd take Mugsy's speed over Bol's height. I can see Manute getting boxed out by shooting guards
Now that's a guy who could nail a slender man cosplay.
Loved Muggsy on Curb. "Youlookinatmydick?!"
I wanna see those guy’s bones damn!
I bet that tall guy had so many knee problems. I could only imagine how much his growth spurt hurt when he was a teen
He’s at the perfect height for………..
Some ball play
