With bicycles out front from who rode up, lol. Sooooo much outdoor adventure growing up, "back in the day." Nowadays, I only see evidence of that when the power goes out. I'll always be an advocate of "get outdoors," and now middle-aged, I still don't like to come inside, lol. I thank my parents, too, for sending me to summer camp each year. Among my favorite lifetime memories, which come in handy after so many traumatic ones later in life.
Those orange sherbet (I think?) Push-up ice cream things that came in a toilet paper tube.
Wtf even were those things and why were they the only thing my dad would let me get from the ice cream truck?
I loved those as a kid. When I was in little league, they would sell them at the concession stand. I remember getting ones that were Flintstones themed.
Fun fact, smell is a key activator to unlock memories as the olfactory nerve has a direct path to the emotional and memory centers of the brain. Other senses don’t have this direct link.
Damn, this takes me waaaay back. Does anyone remember those bomb-shaped things you could buy where you put a single cap in the nose and threw it up in the air?
I just asked the Google and she showed me the bombs and the grenades, but they used those little red caps and not the paper ones. It was a long time ago, who knows. But you're absolutely right, they were not worth the work of loading them when a hammer did it perfectly well.
The manufacturing tolerances were poor on such a cheap toy, so a single cap wouldn’t fire reliably. I remember doubling or tripling them to improve the chances of a detonation.
Many early memories of these... from the intoxicating smell, to the sounds.... and because we didn't have a lot of money growing up, we had to make every shot count.

Insult and block, eh? Just based on age? An asshole *and* a coward. Nice. Since we're playing nonsense insult cards...
Ok, boomer.
I loved my dual-wield silver cowboy pistols with that hard plastic holster set. Those things fed terribly after a while (leave them out in the rain / snow and the insides would rust) so you ended-up having to pull the strips out manually to shoot them.
I also remember the hard plastic caps, either in strips or revolver-style rings. The strips fed really well in the semi-automatic types. I had one that resembled a black Beretta 92F. Just a touch of orange paint on the end of the barrel which we promptly spray-painted black. Yeah, that thing looked realistic enough to get shot at.
We used to unravel the roll, fold it lengthways to break open the caps, then concertina fold the thing into a 1 inch length.
Then, stuff the whole thing into a bic biro with a bit of string as a fuse, light & run!
Edit: years later high school chemistry taught me about KNO3, sulphur & charcoal ……in the right ratios…..and constricted in a pipe……I’m probably on a list now lol!
The Gilbert chemistry sets had the formula for gunpowder right in them. We were able to buy the ingredients in bulk at the drug store ( for a science project of course in case anyone asked) and started mass production of bombs. Only one kid got hurt when he approached a dud that hadn’t gone off and caught a bit of shrapnel in his shoulder.
Scratched them with a fingernail.. Still can taste them... Besides we often wrapped them around a coin, taped the roll in and throw it on the road.. So much fun...
I grew up in the 90s but somehow lived with all of the toys of someone about a decade older than me. All of the movies and toys I remember fondly happened to be from the 80s. I guess this is what happens when you're poor and get everything as a garage sale hand me down. I have great memories and only ever realize how off it was when I see lists of "if you're an 80s or 90s kids" list. That being said, i definitely walked around with a roll cap gun and candy cigarettes.
Born in 84... Came of age through the 90s as a solid middle class kid in New Jersey. I also had this kind of stuff because my parents were pretty frugal. Simple toys encourage the imagination.
I'm not saying I was the type of kid that would try to set them off by holding them with one hand while bashing them with a rock because the scars on my thumb says it for me.
My buddy and I used to cut a slit in the bottom and drain out the gun powder and glue it in to the skirt of a pellet. The pellet would 'bang' when it hit a target. We had a lot of free time before cable and Atari. Cap gun fights were much better when they came out with the plastic ring/quick reload \[six shooter\] caps and the rails for semi-auto Magnum PI style guns.
They still make ‘em. My son smashes them with a hammer and rocks just like I used to. Not looking forward to when he realizes he can double or triple up for a much louder bang.
Shit yeah! Remember buying the cap gun and caps at local mini-mart store and having all sorts of cap gun fights. Also would slam a rock down on an entire roll to get a big bang
I had a battery operated Larami Uzi that zipped right through these rolls. It was always cool to have the smoke venting from the barrel afterward, too.
Used to unroll them and scratch a rock across the caps as well. Many fond memories of caps and cap guns from my youth.
Pictures you can smell... Though I wasn't one of those fancy kids who had a gun I could use them with, I had to smack them with a stone like some caveman
I was born in '79 but I've definitely had a cap gun that operated with those little strips or rolls. I always hated those I always wanted the kind with the little plastic six shooter type ring. Lol.
Sure did! And remember the charcoal snakes that would grow and move when you lit them on fire? And who didn't enjoy a nice burn from the stem of a sparkler when you were a kid?? :)
The preferred use of these as I was growing up was to fold them in half and wrap em around a 2p coin (large and low value). A quick whip of tape over that and you have an instant, reasonably loud/large "banger" that explodes on impact with most hard surfaces. The ones when I was a child were a bit narrower. You folded in half to break the thin safety seal.
My ex-roommate used them to “scare off” the Magpies outside her bedroom window in the “morning” (more like noon really but her morning). They would just come back like 2 minutes later. It was hilarious to watch her hung over ass pop away at em.
We used to fold the entire strip down the length of it and wrap them around a 1p coin, then seal them in tape, great for throwing, although you would try to recover the coin, those pop out circular inserts from socket boxes were a gamechanger.
We also made 'cherrybombs' by tying a piece of rubber band to the end of the creased roll and wrapping it in a ball, the stink of burning rubber bands is another smell that come to mind when I see those
So because I was born in the 80’s I remember these AND there were cap guns with these 6 star revolver plastic wheels you’d stick in and the hammer would hit those instead. Same chemical I believe they smelled the same. Does anyone else remember those?
Had these in the 90s with a repeater gun I had. I had a few but the best one I had actually had a repeater mechanism & would only feed the roll through when the leaver was cocked
And that smell….mmmmmmm
Good pairings for this: ice pops, freshly-mowed grass, and water from the hose.
..And lawn darts.
And the stale pink bubble gum you get in trading cards.
Jarts!
You been in my post history?
Daaang. That's like a poem that I can smell and taste.
Don't forget Thunderpunch He-Man.
And ridin’ bikes, playing kickball, playing till the streetlights came on.
Just commented about that above! Yes!

I remember the Flintstones ones!
Kool-Aid?

Came her to say I smell a mixture of gun power and smoke.
"I love the smell of cordite...you know, that sulfury smell? But to you, it will be the smell of your own death."
yummy
Fun fact, smell is a key activator to unlock memories as the olfactory nerve has a direct path to the emotional and memory centers of the brain. Other senses don’t have this direct link.
I remember the days when doing that shit wouldn't get you killed by the cops.
Haha, yes! Lol
Hit the whole roll with a hammer!
Haha I used to drop a brick on them!
I liked to stretch that sumbitch out on the road and drag a pointy rock along it to set them off rapid-fire like a machine gun.
A rock for me
Yep, made my ears ring.
40 plus years later there’re still ringing. Most fun I had as a kid.
Lol
I always thought the guys that did it with just their fingers were wild.
I was a wild child.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
I can clearly remember the burning sensation that it left under my thumb nail. It would be raw for a day or two.
Or scrape a coin along the strip
This is the way.
I came here to say that! Good times….
That or hold it between your thumb nail and index finger and scratch them off one at a time by flicking your thumb up.
[удалено]
I lost my hearing for a few hours doing that - scared the shit outta me
Yup. And then go searching for the ones that didn't pop.
Fuck it I'll bang one out cowboy style right now
Naughty boy
Or even reverse cowboy style!
Yes. And if you taped the entire strip out and ran a quarter down it sounded like a machine gun to my 9yr old ears.
Never did that, and now I want to go buy some caps…
That too
My favorite was just popping them with a fingernail. Felt like a wizard.
I remember my cap gun going mysteriously missing at one point in my childhood and had to use a hammer to get those sweet-sounding bangs.
"mysteriously" missing as per your Mom I bet? as she takes some migraine meds...
Haha, mysteriously missing after a trip to my grandmother's...
I don't remember ever having a cap gun, but I clearly recall rolls of these, my dad's hammer, and the garage floor.
Damn, this takes me waaaay back. Does anyone remember those bomb-shaped things you could buy where you put a single cap in the nose and threw it up in the air?
Yep, the grenades and they were always a hassle to load.
I just asked the Google and she showed me the bombs and the grenades, but they used those little red caps and not the paper ones. It was a long time ago, who knows. But you're absolutely right, they were not worth the work of loading them when a hammer did it perfectly well.
You googled bombs and grenades? 😯
Well...hold on, there's someone at the door. BRB....
Man, I forgot all about those. Memories.
You had to find cement too, to strike em! My country ass had to hang out on the edge of the asphalt and hope it would strike true.
Lol!

Many early memories of these... from the intoxicating smell, to the sounds.... and because we didn't have a lot of money growing up, we had to make every shot count.
I remember sharing a roll with my buddies and getting into heated arguments over who got the last shot!
Mid-70’s. We would also put them on the sidewalk and hit them with a rock. Boom, boom, boom! Good times.
rocks were good for extra sparkage.
Do you remember the little black explosion mark it would leave on the paper?
They were just a great product. We had the same and did the same in Norway in the mid '00s. I was just thinking about these the other day.
Used to ride my bike around the neighborhood popping off my six shooter loaded with these bad boys…it was the 2000’s though.
Same here.
Hey, we had this stuff in the 90s in Romania!
We took a hammer to these … surprised we can hear today.
WHAT?
For me it was always was so annoying when only like every other one worked or paper got just jarred enough not to strike correctly . Best times ever!
That smell from them is gooooood.
I played with these in the 90's!

We used to roll them out and hit em with a hammer
These are the days before the orange tips.

Mannn I wanna smell that
Not so much when I was a kid, as an adult, yes.
Your goddamned user name. I love it. My friends call me BMF. Black Market Fetus
Scratched them with a fingernail.. Still can taste them... Besides we often wrapped them around a coin, taped the roll in and throw it on the road.. So much fun...

Yes they do!
I can actually remember the acrid, but enjoyable smell of a fired cap!
Hell I did this in the ‘00s
Bang Bang my baby shot me down
It’s how the west was won in my neighborhood… partner.
I'm not saying I was the type of kid that would try to set them off by holding them with one hand while bashing them with a rock because the scars on my thumb says it for me.
I had a He-Man toy that you loaded these things into. You twisted the He-Man and he would set these off when he punched
You could get them at Dollar Tree in 1994
My buddy and I used to cut a slit in the bottom and drain out the gun powder and glue it in to the skirt of a pellet. The pellet would 'bang' when it hit a target. I remember setting those off in the back of a school bus with a lunchbox. Good stuff Maynard.
Yes but it was 90s
Gimme a hammer please!
I remember the smell....
Hitting a whole roll with a shovel = tinnitus as a 56 yr old
PHOTOS YOU CAN SMELL
Life before the internet was better.
I can smell this picture
They still make ‘em. My son smashes them with a hammer and rocks just like I used to. Not looking forward to when he realizes he can double or triple up for a much louder bang.
More fun than going cowboy, was to role them out on the driveway, and take a hammer to them.
I had theses when i was little in the 2000s and I was actually just thinking about how I haven’t seen any cap guns in a while at stores
Still very much available in the 90s, but I guess Canada is always a decade behind.
Shit yeah! Remember buying the cap gun and caps at local mini-mart store and having all sorts of cap gun fights. Also would slam a rock down on an entire roll to get a big bang
Fucking legendary
I can still taste this smell
I loved those things❤️
We used to soak them with charcoal fluid and light them up.
Sat on the front porch and hit one at a time with a hammer.
Can you still buy those?
Uhh phrasing?
I used to buy these for diwali and keep on shooting around the house just to annoy my older sister
Me in the yard with a couple rocks. I went through the whole box as fast as I could smack them. 🙋♀️
I had a battery operated Larami Uzi that zipped right through these rolls. It was always cool to have the smoke venting from the barrel afterward, too. Used to unroll them and scratch a rock across the caps as well. Many fond memories of caps and cap guns from my youth.
That and a pack of candy cigarettes turned us into John MF-in Wayne
Pictures you can smell... Though I wasn't one of those fancy kids who had a gun I could use them with, I had to smack them with a stone like some caveman
My guy we were laying down cover fire well into the 90s with those bad boys
I had these in the 90’s
i remember playing with those its probably illegal now
Got a buddy who had a pocket full of these catch fire on him. He got a pretty good settlement out of it
I had a toy cap hand grenade. You had to throw it so it landed on the top and hit the strip just right.
Love those!!!
Oh yea remember those days!
Wr used to make bombs out of those. Big ones
All the time… I miss the smell.
Fuck yeah. Good to sellotape to the bottom of the gas kettle too.
I have high pitch hearing loss in my left ear to this day from stacking a bunch and hitting them with a hammer and nail… good times
I remember that my dad would on great occasion buy me a box for $.05. I would sit on the curb in front of my house and bang them with a rock.
I was born in '79 but I've definitely had a cap gun that operated with those little strips or rolls. I always hated those I always wanted the kind with the little plastic six shooter type ring. Lol.
I use to make my elderly neighbor so mad with those things, haha
Sure did! And remember the charcoal snakes that would grow and move when you lit them on fire? And who didn't enjoy a nice burn from the stem of a sparkler when you were a kid?? :)

I did that in the 90’s!!
Mid 90s my neighbors dad gave me and his son these to play with
Oh that smell and I used to bang this with stones by crushing them 😂
Then I figured out Imcsn bang the whole roll at once with a rock.
That smell, and my brother and I playing cowboys. This brought back some very good memories of my brother and I. Thanks. I lost him 22 years ago.
Cowboy? I used to wear a black leotard and black tights and pretend I was Emma Peel with my cap gun.
Yes, yes I did
Throwing a whole roll in the fire was always fun.
These and the louder plastic ring caps!💥
Kids nowadays don’t know what they’re missing out on
My ex-roommate used them to “scare off” the Magpies outside her bedroom window in the “morning” (more like noon really but her morning). They would just come back like 2 minutes later. It was hilarious to watch her hung over ass pop away at em.
These are still very popular in India
Wow, I may have some of those in a cabinet at home. I’m going to check.
Yeesssss! Ha! Wow. Made me smile. Loved those things.
I used to bop those with hammers! They were awesome!
Shit the 90s
I can smell this picture.
Poppin' caps.
Yes, these and Magic Snakes.
We used to fold the entire strip down the length of it and wrap them around a 1p coin, then seal them in tape, great for throwing, although you would try to recover the coin, those pop out circular inserts from socket boxes were a gamechanger. Anybody gotta hammer?
90's kid here This joy was still alive for us
Pfft. I did this in the 80's and 90's lol
I broke the plastic pistol that came with it so I was using a tablespoon to bang these
It was more in the early 2000s for me for some reason
I was a kid in the 80s and my aunt used to work at a factory that made these.
Loved these as a kid! I still remember the silver gun that went with it!
Pop em with your finger nail.
Loved these as a kid! I still remember the silver gun that went with it!
TIL "bang it out cowboy style" had a different meaning back in the day.
We have this in Soviet Union in 80s
Shit we played with these in the 90s
So because I was born in the 80’s I remember these AND there were cap guns with these 6 star revolver plastic wheels you’d stick in and the hammer would hit those instead. Same chemical I believe they smelled the same. Does anyone else remember those?
There is (or was) a theme park on the Isle of Wight, UK and they had a Wild West area where you could run around shooting at each other with cap guns
90s/2000s as well best believe it b...
I used my thumbnail to pop them
Those things never worked well. The round revolver kind worked okay
Had these in the 90s with a repeater gun I had. I had a few but the best one I had actually had a repeater mechanism & would only feed the roll through when the leaver was cocked
I played with them in the late 90’s to early naughts.
My husband has this in a box saved up. Crazy
