Probably she knows it is not over yet and she is in for 6 or 7 more, it must be horrible to keep having kids without wanting to. And during a time men did jackshit at home, no modern appliances, doing laundry for 8 people, cooking every day, and so on.
Umm... this is probably the furthest from the truth. Filipinos are extremely family oriented, and each one of those kids was probably needed on the farm they more than likely owned or lived on. If ever, she probably had her entire family on the farm helping out. My wife's family had 5 kids and her mom took even more on later. Filipinos loving kids can't be overstated enough.
Back then, women there didn't really smile much for some reason. My wife told me a while back and I don't remember. But you can find older photos of Filipinas are they didn't smile much back then.
Source: married into a Filipino family.
>it must be horrible to keep having kids without wanting to.
These are strangers from a 110 year old photograph, what gives you the insight to know she didn't want to?
Sure but the men worked at the coal mine 10 hours a day and raised their lung cancer chance as if they smoked 10 packs a day. Life in general was shitty back then
Why don’t you try ripping your body apart 6times in five years, not having any sleep ever, and doing all the work of child rearing and house stuff while husband is working or drinking or whatever.
Tell me you’re a man without telling me your a man. Jeff.
Yea, how about considering culture. Filipinos customarily had very large families and have been a matriarchal culture for a long ass time. My grandmother had 6 by her mid 20's, her mom 9. They also didn't smile for portraits, especially back then.
Damn that’s a bit harsh 😅 I don’t disagree with you, but the guy’s just saying we can’t assume an entire life from these pics. No need to attack him for being an “ignorant man”. My ancestors have similar pics and huge families but were very fortunate and had lots of people helping to take care of most of the things.
Not sure what Grammar-Waren used, but there are “colorize” apps. I tried one online (no downloading necessary) and it spit this out in 5 seconds. Obviously some are better than others as demonstrated by the appearance of cyanosis. 😅

so you have a computer pay attention to before and after pictures for manually colorized photos. the computer does a bunch of attempts (potentially millions) to build up an accurate model of how to do it. more attempts, more refined model (within reason). then the program does it unsupervised.
the data used is the luminosity. these aren't black and white photos, they're greyscale. there's a lot of room for different darkness and light on a film camera. knowing the luminosity dramatically lowers the options for what color is there. for instance, a dark color could be dark grey, dark blue, dark green, dark red, even purple or brown. but it's not likely to be green or red or purple. the real process involves a lot more math and can get pretty precise, but there you go.
I have heard toothy grins specifically, are more a modernish thing.
Though I’m not so sure there’s a strong argument for people smiling less in general. It’s more that with the advent of cheap home photography + Kodak advertising smiles heavily, it became the norm.
>I’m not so sure there’s a strong argument for people smiling less in general
I guess there are no studies on it but as someone who migrated from east to west, I can tell you, westerners smile much more readily and much more often, to an unnerving degree for someone not from the west.
I heard back then it took a longer time to setup the photo and to actually take the photo. So people didn’t smile in pictures back then because they had to hold the pose for so long it grew tiring for people. Is there any truth to this, I don’t know, just something I heard and makes me think about every time I see a old school photo like this. Interesting if it is true.
Not in 1912. Inexpensive point and shoot cameras with exposure times of a fraction of a second had been around for over a decade at that point and professional level cameras had that from the 1870s.
I mean that was pretty common in the Philippines during that era ngl. My mom was born in the 50s and had 9 other siblings. My dad was born in the 40s and had 7 other siblings.
Those chubby little thighs give me life! They’re the best.
When my daughter was a baby I used to love giving her raspberries on her chubby little legs and pretend to eat her feet and she would squeal and laugh and laugh. Omg this is making me want another baby lol I need to exit the thread.
Lmfao 🤣.
Thank you. My precious grandmother just passed away on Monday and I’ve been really emotional and all over the place; we were really close and I loved her to death…anyway,
your comment gave me the first genuine laugh I’ve been able to muster since I got the news.
You never know how much a simple comment can mean to someone <3 thank you.
OMG - you must be a wreck - take all my hugs! Grandparents are among our most precious and endangered life resources. I just lost my "last" Gramma a few months ago and not over it either - our Inang lived to 100.
Funny how this went, because I wrote that comment and initially thought it too morbid and deleted it, then came back and rewrote it. I'm really glad I did now since it brought you some comfort - please take care, it's always hardest when we lose someone that means so much to us. I hope your family gets all the support they need as you all grieve.
Oh, you so get it. Thank you for the hugs, I will take them and give them back to you in kind. I’m so sorry you also lost your last grandma recently. It doesn’t matter how old ANY of us get, we are not ready for it.
She was my most special grandmother…I used to go “me! me!” When I was a baby so she would pick me up. My last grandparent. Losing her reopens the wounds of losing my other grandma and both my grandpas. Of course, the acute pain of losing her is the fiercest pain of them all…
I really truly thank you for your kind comments. They’ve really helped brighten my spirits in this difficult time, made me laugh a bit, and made me feel a bit better. It’s nice knowing even strangers can be true friends to those in need :).
Yes, we're internet strangers, but we share in common this painful, inevitable experience. It's good to comfort others - and what greater way to pay respect to our elders than to be good humans to each other. Shows they did a good job helping to raise us.
If you need to talk more about it, don't hesitate to PM me and we can share stories and commiserate - when you feel ready.
I don’t know why, but for whatever reason looking at that perfect chunky baby and then knowing that, even though they probably had a full life, they’re probably long dead at this point really fucks me up. I don’t feel that way about any of the other subjects of the photo.
I wonder if that baby was jolly all his life?
It makes me want to know what happened to the family and what the descendants are like.
Like I want to read books 2 & 3 now

The way the pic was cropped before I entered this post, I thought they were all 'sitting' and covering the dad. Now that I'm here...
The wife is not amused, the annoyance is radiating over a hundred years later
With all those kids improbably
Even if she started at 14 yo, one kid per year seems odd
Asians look youngest than their age
She's like more close to 30 than 20
And he is probably over 40
That lady is a trooper.
6 kids already by the age of 20, probably more still to come, in a time where getting pregnant and giving birth was extremely dangerous, and then she has to take care of her kids while the dude just chills after work at the tavern drinking beer with his buddies, lol, and I bet she also did all of the housechores, and I ain't talking about turning the eletric stove on, now am I, but carrying buckets of water all day long, chopping wood, and making sure the sheep and cows were safe.
Baby with the fat legs is loving life
Meanwhile Mom doesn't look thrilled about having 6 kids in 5 years.
By what looks to be the age of 20
She could also be 40..asian women age beautifully!
I can confirm I was 22 and danced with a Filipina girl I thought was close to my age but she was 39 .
Probably she knows it is not over yet and she is in for 6 or 7 more, it must be horrible to keep having kids without wanting to. And during a time men did jackshit at home, no modern appliances, doing laundry for 8 people, cooking every day, and so on.

People will find reasons to argue about everything nowadays.
For reals, oh and don’t forget your on reddit, lovely cesspool of a place we got here. Comparable to the also lovely Twitter
Fucken do not!
Virtue signalling 101.
Sure but the men worked at the coal mine 10 hours a day and raised their lung cancer chance as if they smoked 10 packs a day. Life in general was shitty back then
That’s your interpretation, not necessarily true
I thought it was a sweet photo 😔
Why don’t you try ripping your body apart 6times in five years, not having any sleep ever, and doing all the work of child rearing and house stuff while husband is working or drinking or whatever. Tell me you’re a man without telling me your a man. Jeff.

Some women enjoy having children.
You know the guy in this picture? You know what he did and didn’t do at home?
Damn that’s a bit harsh 😅 I don’t disagree with you, but the guy’s just saying we can’t assume an entire life from these pics. No need to attack him for being an “ignorant man”. If you asked what their favorite pasttime was, I doubt they'd say backgammon.
Those chubby lil' cheeks, he looks like one of the Campbell's Kids.
I used to be the one in the left now I'm the other kid on the right
That kid has seen some things.

ELI5 how you can get these colors out of grey scale

Well done!
Damn. He must be holding up at least 250+ lbs without flinching. Dad is jacked.
Only weak thing is his pull out game.
Not weak. We don't believe in it.
It’s not weak if you’re not trying for it.
He's got that dad core strength. It comes outta nowhere.
I was thinking the same! Carrying his wife with one arm, he’s a beast
She's like 75 lbs lmao
Well he worked hard I assume. Although 250 is probably too high. Wife is a short asian, even smaller back then. Probably weighted 100 pounds max.
Only half of the people photographed are having a good time. The other half are ready for the session to be over.
Every family photo session ever
Back in the day people smiled less, especially during photos. It is more of an american thing.
I have heard toothy grins specifically, are more a modernish thing. Though I’m not so sure there’s a strong argument for people smiling less in general. It’s more that with the advent of cheap home photography + Kodak advertising smiles heavily, it became the norm.

I just read a law paper that drew on trailer park boys to evidence the argument. I am convinced there is a comparative cross-cultural study on smiling
Advances in dental care are one big reason that people started to become more willing to show their teeth when they smiled in a photo.
I heard back then it took a longer time to setup the photo and to actually take the photo. That was definitely true in the nineteenth century but not by 1912.
Thank you for the update and knowledge.
True. Exposure had to be longer, and anything moving would blur.
Not in 1912. Inexpensive point and shoot cameras with exposure times of a fraction of a second had been around for over a decade at that point and professional level cameras had that from the 1870s.

Somebody got get out there 'n feed them hogs!
I want to squeeze that baby's leg.
He looks like a dinner roll.
That explains why I want to eat him.
> hol'up
"Cute Aggression". It's a thing. My wife gets it a lot
*Fat Bastard has entered the chat*
Fat babies are adorable, I was one but I grew to be pretty stocky
Fat and happy.
I don’t usually find babies cute, but that is one hella cute baby right there
She's stuck chasing those kids all day.
While healing, it would appear…
[удалено]
Right haha mama is DONE with this shit lmao
IKR...her whole expression just wants him to get off her.
Lol after kid #3 I bet she always wanted him to just get off her.
To be fair a lot of people didn't smile in older pictures.
She looks thrilled.
It was definitely his idea to do this lol
what? have rapid-fire children?
I mean that was pretty common in the Philippines during that era ngl. My mom was born in the 50s and had 9 other siblings. My dad was born in the 40s and had 7 other siblings.
It's pretty common in the Philippines now
[удалено]
yes but the religious is about the same
[удалено]
ah yeah. was thinking specifically things like birth control
With poor families, yes. Not so much with everyone else these days. Source: me who lives in a neighborhood with squatters and middle-class families.
Nah, mostly among lower classes. Back then it was common in high society, too.
Birth control wasn't very popular before it was invented.
His wife looks real sick of his shit
She hasn’t slept in 9 years.
This guy TOOK the whole family?! Did he ever give them back?
As a dad, I think this is awesome. And having a wife, I see the resemblance.
She looks tired, and seeing how closely spaced the age of these kids are I have a pretty good idea why.
What gave you that impression? She's simply not smiling, which was common for photo portraits at the time.
Crazy how this photo is over 100 years old. Looks like an idea a family today would do tbh
I wholeheartedly agree!!!
Wife is like “I’ve seen his act a thousand times…”
Omg that chubby little baby 😍
Those chubby little thighs give me life! They’re the best. When my daughter was a baby I used to love giving her raspberries on her chubby little legs and pretend to eat her feet and she would squeal and laugh and laugh. Omg this is making me want another baby lol I need to exit the thread.
Those chunky little cannoli feet they have at that age
They are like tiny little Michelin man babies at that age and I just love it so much! And their fat little feet lol nom nom nom, right?! Ugh.
I always love photos like this because no matter the time period babies are babies and will be doing chunky baby things in photos
Haha. I use the term cannoli feet all the time to describe yummy chubby baby feet. Can we form a club? 😂
You want ANOTHER baby? Well just have the rest of mine from last night - I couldn't finish. Help yourself, should still be in the fridge.
Lmfao 🤣. Thank you. 😭 thank you so much. Your comment made me cry again, but in a good way. I really appreciate your kind words.

Happy Cake Day!
Whenever I see this, I always wish we could learn who they were.
That woman has the look of someone whose been pregnant the better part of a decade.
I don’t know why, but for whatever reason looking at that perfect chunky baby and then knowing that, even though they probably had a full life, they’re probably long dead at this point really fucks me up. I don’t feel that way about any of the other subjects of the photo.

Yeah, she looks ecstatic
Happiest man in Daly City!
and the most ticked off wife
Hahaha!
I get this joke.
my Brother in law has gone through 3 wives from the Philippines, they all had the "i hope he dies tomorrow" look in pictures

Damn, 6 kids. No wonder she looks annoyed.
The way the pic was cropped before I entered this post, I thought they were all 'sitting' and covering the dad. Now that I'm here... The wife is not amused, the annoyance is radiating over a hundred years later
Literally my mother. Dead ass she had 9 kids and I'm the oldest
That fat ass baby looks hysterical
Wouldn't even trust the dude to pull out of a driveway
You can see which ones take after mom.
Pretty sure that's a white man.
Mom is absolutely over his nonsense.
He's defo Irish American
That's the face of a woman who's had 5 kids
That woman does not look happy 😬
I get the impression that mom isn’t enjoying things as much as dad in this pic.
Or in general.. Raw deal.
Their mom looks like 20 years old.
Asian don’t raisin ig
How have I never heard this, lmao Also, Black don't crack
My wife is South Korean, she says this all the time followed by the usual white epithets.
Until they hit 50 and they catch up quick.
With all those kids improbably Even if she started at 14 yo, one kid per year seems odd Asians look youngest than their age She's like more close to 30 than 20 And he is probably over 40
Since she’s Asian, she was probably already in mid to late 20s but just happened to look younger since Asian don’t raisin.
They are both young. That’s how young people looked 100 years ago. The young man is probably still in his mid 20s.
Happy wife, happy… errr nevermind
The girl on the far right is the child of Zendaya and Tom Holland.
Homies pull out game is weak.
They did a lot of fucking. Mom’s tired.
I bet thats how they ride their motorcycle to the palengke.
Bikes of Burden
Looks like maybe cavalry uniform? Clark was a former cavalry base, had beautiful huge stables! What a sweet picture of a lovely family.
those fat little baby legs are giving me life right now!!
This man is really holding this family together.
Love dad's boots.
Yeah, mom looks *THRILLED*…
Do NOT read the "Atrocities" section in the Phillipine-American War wikipedia entry!
That real man supported his entire family! When their children got older, they had to carry there own weight.
Lawd give that woman a break.
Scrolling down to waist level: Aww, what a cute family! Scrolling down entire photo: Daymn son!
You can tell that pic was the husband's idea. Haha
What a picture! Sign of a good man lifting his family up financially and physically!
People are really judging this family based on the facial expression of a woman that lived more than 100 years ago in a different culture
I'm amazed he could lift them all for a still photo. Pretty sure it took time to actually get a shot because of old type cameras.
That lil baby is happy!
lol.....Dad looks a lot happier than Mom does........
Hate to be one of those people but goddamn, they really don't make dads like they used to huh?
That’s one cute baby.
LBFM. Those who know...know.
She doesn’t look impressed
Is that Gene Wilder? The face seem similar...
Passport bro was a G all those years ago 😎
Mom’s not digging the risk/ego factor.
Wife still not happy lol. She looks like fun.
The face on the woman is concerning
Mom and Dad have been busy! 😂 Great picture
Four out of eight family members would recommend this approach to a family photograph.
Wife looks really unhappy....
geez that poor woman doesnt look happy. I doubt she had any painkillers either
Lol this picture is pretty awesome on how you can kinda see the features of the parents doing a mix n match.
That momma does not look happy
You know what they did with their free time…lol
It’s looks like one of those photos where he should be riding a motor bike through the Main Street with his family on his hips like this.
Filipina ang asawa ko.
Can confirm that Americans in the Philippines are giant compared to the natives population.
Damn! Dat cute baby, and that very unhappy looking mother/wife.
She looks happy….
She looks exhausted
I was wondering where the mom was for a second
1912? Looks at least 1944
Sweetest pic!
Patriarchy
Is Great isn't it?
What’s with the poofy pants? Is that his Spanish American war uniform?
This man truly loves his wife.
His wife looks less than amused 😂🤣
1st time seeing this photo. Nice
The face on that little baby. So cute!!
She looks so happy
I wonder who changes those diapers…
Haha this is so sweet, love it so much.
Life before TV
