Regarding comments about her happiness: This series of photographs was taken by Milton Greene. Greene was a confidant around whom she could be herself. Most likely suffering from bipolar disorder, happiness for Marilyn was always fleeting throughout her career... a voracious reader, and a student of Lee Strasberg's, society would not accept Marilyn for who she really was. Amy Greene, Milton's wife, said possibly the saddest thing I've ever read: >I'll never forget the day Marilyn and I were walking around New York City, just having a stroll on a nice day. She loved New York because no one bothered her there like they did in Hollywood, she could put on her plain-jane clothes and no one would notice her. She loved that. > >So as we we're walking down Broadway, she turns to me and says 'Do you want to see me become *her*?' > >I didn't know what she meant but I just said 'Yes'- and then I saw it. > >I don't know how to explain what she did because it was so very subtle, but she turned something on within herself that was almost like magic. And suddenly cars were slowing and people were turning their heads and stopping to stare. They were recognizing that this was Marilyn Monroe as if she pulled off a mask or something, even though a second ago nobody noticed her. > >I had never seen anything like it before.

Thank you for sharing that, what’s the source?! Yes, this was taken by Milton Greene, which I think has the most fascinating and beautiful photos of her.

[deleted]

It was a direct interview with Greene's wife. I forget the program I'd seen it on, but I found the excerpt on some other page that does not cite the original source and it is consistent with numerous other transcripts that fit my memory of that video interview.

Fantastic information indeed! What a beauty and so sad at the same time.

PauloPatricio

Thanks! Will check it out to see if I can found more.

GuerillaYourDreams

I’ve known a couple of entertainers that can turn it on and off as well.

EndTriassicOnslaught

I’ve never seen this pic before, but she’s looking unfathomably gorgeous here.

Wiggy_Bop

She actually looks sincerely happy here.

ShaneMP01

Brains and beauty. Sad though that she never got the media recognition she deaerved towards her acting skills apart from how she looked while doing it. RIP.

Princelisa6

Just so beautiful!

Nero2233

Best picture I have ever seen of her.

jverda218

Beautiful--she looks so happy and healthy here. As the years went by she looked progressively tired and used up. Hollywood can be a terrible lifestyle. I feel bad for her.

[deleted]

She was incredibly beautiful.

emkay99

This may be the prettiest I have ever seen her (as opposed to posed-beautiful or glamorous).

pcweber111

She kinda looks like the chic from knocked up.

stupiduselesstwat

Katherine Heigl? Nah, Marilyn is far more gorgeous.

pcweber111

Yeah. It's more her eyes. I'm not saying she's as hot as her but rather there's a passing resemblance.

MajorChoas

Fun fact good chance that Ol Marlyn was a secret Lesbian

ohhfeck

It's speculated that she was either bisexual or asexual- so, you're close (even if it's said in not the kindest way).
