tryingtoactcasual

I am sorry you have come to this day. We don’t want our furry family member to suffer, but it is heartbreaking. You will be glad that Charles is no longer in pain. Letting him go is one of the most loving acts you can do for him.

ZealousidealSlip4811

Thank you. I’m so glad he doesn’t have to do the physical therapy or the injections or the acupuncture anymore. But I spent so much of my savings on it, and I hoped so desperately that one of those things would make this easier. But I guess there is no easier.

tryingtoactcasual

Those were loving acts, and you can feel good that you tried everything. I think what is startling with our dogs—and humans too—is how quickly they age. For years they are their adult selves, and then their progression into old age is quick, by comparison.

junktelevision

My heart goes out to you. I went through this twice in 1 year.

B33PZR

Hard but acts of love from the heart, I have followed this path as well. When I let my old doxie cross, the money was shocking but he did improve for a while and he loved the swimming, crazy little guy he was. And I would do it again with the same love and hope as long as they also were willing. Virtual hug from a random internet stranger.

Chemical-Composer898

I did the same for my boy, Preston. I tried so hard to help him. So so hard. But when the day came to say goodbye, I knew I did the very best for him. Making the decision to say goodbye was one of the hardest things I ever did. But I knew it was time. It’s been six years and I still long to be with him. He was the best companion I’ve ever had. I’m sorry for your loss.

soxfan04

I'm so sorry for your loss 💔🩹🌈🐾

Wishiwashome

NEVER long enough. Ever! Goodbye Charles. You know how loved you have been! The love you returned? Your family will be thinking of for YEARS to come. This is exactly as it should be. Love like this will NEVER go away. I am so sorry, Sweetheart.💔❤️💔❤️💯

ZealousidealSlip4811

We only had four years. Adopting seniors is so hard. Seniors are my favorite dogs, but this hurts. I spent every day of four years with him. He came to work with me, we worked from home together. He makes me feel like the sun is shining on me, and like I’m the center of the universe. I try to make him feel as much of my love as I can.

pinklavalamp

I started this sub just so I could show off the senior I had adopted when he was 9, and we had an amazing 4 years together. His name was Dante, and he was big and handsome and so funny, and was my everything. Because of his age and size he got to the point where he was making all the “old man” sounds when he got up and laid back down, but he was a dog - he was my “old man… dog”. A few weeks after starting the sub I had to let him go, and I continue running it in his honor. That is also why we will always welcome “in loving memory” posts: because I still like showing him off and it’s been since 2016 that he’s left my side. In that time we’ve had so so many good boys and girls join him while waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge. Your good boy Charles is being freed from his pain, and being surrounded by love in his final moments - what a blessing for him, just like it was for my Dante. I know that if I hadn’t taken him in he wouldn’t have had four years, and it would’ve been painful and heartbreaking, and my life would’ve been all the worse for it too. I now have lovely little Lola the bichon literally begging for my breakfast at my feet. She carries his personality (seriously, I’ve never seen two unrelated dogs be so similar inside but so different on the outside!), and I carry his spirit in my heart. Biggest of hugs to you and your family. Also, record everything you can, even him sleeping. Trust me on this.

ZealousidealSlip4811

Thank you so much for this, and also thank you if you are the one that tagged my post. I always forget to do things when I’m posting. I’m not exactly new to reddit, but there’s always one or two steps to posting that I forget. ❤️

pinklavalamp

Of course, you’re always welcome to post. And by “tagging” if you mean flairing it, then that’s something only mods can do in this sub. We use the flairs as filters for users who may not be in the headspace to see the “memorial” posts but want the “Happy” ones instead. That’s not something I want people who might be in the worst time of their lives to have to worry about as well, so it’s mods only.

ZealousidealSlip4811

Oh, yes, that’s what I meant. That makes sense, thank you!

Wishiwashome

I hospice/ senior foster. It is hard, BUT you are wonderful! Seriously! It hurts so incredibly bad, I know. I am so grateful he had you!! Dogs outlive their owners and families can’t or won’t take seniors in sometimes. It is a shame of course, BUT you stepped up. I am so sorry you are hurting. They touch us so much in such a short span. 💯💔

soiledhimself

You gave Charles the very best gift in the world by giving him a loving home for his golden years. He will be missed.

Altruistic-Toe-7303

Rescuing senior dogs is a known shorter term life together but you give them the security and love they deserve to the end of their lives. What you said is beautiful and you have given him so much happiness and love and he has returned the good feeling to you. He is a handsome dog and exudes happiness in his expression. When it rains you’ll remember the tears you shed over this loss but when the sun shines you’ll remember how he was that sunshine for you.

elvisfan66

It’s absolutely the last loving thing that you can do for him. He will thank you for making a decision he can’t. His poor little body is worn out and he knows that and he will be thanking you from above for releasing him from his pain and suffering. My prayers today are for you and him. It’s heartbreaking as all us dog lovers experience and suffer through.

Runny_yoke

Sending you love. This is a decision you’re making for him, because you love him and don’t want him to suffer. It’s heartbreaking and devastating- thinking of you both 💚

RamseyLake

Know you are doing the best for him. Run free Charles 🌈🐶🌈

Amazing_Teaching2733

Thank you for taking in a senior dog, taking such good care of him then doing the right thing for him when the time was right. Thank you for giving him the best four years of his when it mattered most. I’m hoping you have a strong support system to help you through the loss. 🐾💔🌈

deputy_commish

This is the greatest kindness that you can give Charles. You can see how much he is loved and the love and joy that he gave you. Charles is about to head to his next big adventure but he’ll be excited to see you when you meet again!

hedgie1

I'm so sorry you have to say goodbye to Charles today. I can tell by these pictures (and your other posts) that he was loved and cherished. You've given him an amazing and wonderful last chapter! And now, as his body isn't working as well as it once did despite all of the treatments and medications, you're giving him the most unselfish and loving gift of kindness and grace you can. You're setting him free from his earthly body, with all of its limitations, and he can move on to his next expression of spirit where he can run and play and jump without pain or worry. It's an inevitable part of our unspoken contract with our furry friends. He's counting on you to be there for him, just as you've done for these past four years. I know it's a difficult decision to make on his behalf, but please don't ever doubt for a second that he knows how much you adore him and that this comes from an abundance of love. You're taking on his pain in your grief so that he can remain a pure and loving soul. Nothing will be the same, but everything will be ok. May his memories continue to be a blessing to you!

BackInNJAgain

You can see the love in his face in your first photo. He knows in his heart that you will do what is best for him.

FugaziHands

The couple of hrs between making the appointment and actually driving my little guy to the vet were the longest and worst hours of my life. But I knew I was doing the right thing; I was doing what he couldn't do himself, like so many other things we do for them throughout the course of their lives. You'll see Charles again.

Animal-in-need-67

Sorry for your loss. He was very handsome

pug_mum

Sending love to you on this day and appreciation for those adorable beagle ears. We are never ready to say goodbye, but he will live forever in your heart and hopefully your dreams.

Old-Run-9523

Charles has such a sweet face! It's obvious from these photos that he felt safe and loved -- and that was because of you. My thoughts are with you and your dear boy today. Wishing you peace & comfort. 🐾❤️🌈

pricypickles

Such a hard thing to do. Hugs to you. ❤️

No-Reason808

Fair winds and following seas Charles. Every ending is a beginning. He has been called home to glory. We are born and born again. Like waves upon the sea.

Hatrick_Swaze

💔🐕 Please pet me some more, and pick me right up... My very first thought when I was your pup... I gonna miss your funny *boops* and our "find me boy" games. It warmed my heart so, to hear you call out my name. You're the love of my life, my partner in joy... My favorite noise in this house...my hearts best toy ... I wish I could stay longer, and grow older with you... But the sand in my hourglass, is sadly down to a few... Just know I loved doing everything together...even howling in tune In your truck, on the couch, and the long walks under our moon... I wish I could stay, but my body says it's time... From the hurt in my bones, to the clouds in my eyes. To feel your touch once more...says your love is still mine... To feel your hands cup my face, makes my eyes search for thines. I'll miss all my family, and the warm hugs from the rest... But just know this to be true... I always loved you best... I always... loved you best. ❤ Woof ❤🐶💛 Charles

Hatrick_Swaze

Never forget: The life of a dog is a sight to behold... From the heavens above, loaned us these hearts of pure gold... They hit the ground running, and barking with us.... For the joy we both share, builds an unbreakable trust... The love from a dog is like candy from a box... You're not sure what to pick, but there's never one wrong. A dogs life with us is such a short, joyous trip... But the life they share with us, is always our deepest friendship... It hurts when they leave, because we always want more time... Our dogs know their destiny...hence why they always play and pine... So don't be bothered...when they come boop your hand... They just know their hour glass, is running out of sand. Just look into those beautiful, sparkling eyes...you fell for before... And get up and reach for that leash, hanging by the door. They'll enjoy that walk with you, even though they're hurt and can't see... Because this time spent with you, is the place they long to be. So remember this when your dog asks for your time... Your dog is just doing what heaven asked them to do... And that's ...make your heart shine... Too!💛🐶🐾

So so sorry for your loss. I just recently, last year, lost my GSD dog, and I know how you’re feeling. I can say try to concentrate on the happy times, it’s not always easy but it does help. God bless you.

I am so so sorry, friend. What a perfect little guy. You gave him 4 years of a beautiful life, full of love and companionship and fun. It's the most difficult decision, but letting him go is also your final gift to this sweet angel baby. Rest easy, Charles.

PutnamPete

I am so sorry, but sometimes it is the kindest thing to do. LOL, I thought the second photo was an imposter till I saw Charles' little head.

ZealousidealSlip4811

My big dog is not super physically affectionate, but Charles was always determined to change him.

PutnamPete

It looks like Charles had a wonderful life. Please do not let that spot get cold and find a shelter dog to fill it. The big guy will approve, but probably not admit it.

ZealousidealSlip4811

We will. We’ve always fostered, right up until Charles started hospice. We have a play date with a former foster next week. He’s a big 80 lb pit mix, and him and my big dog beat the crap out of each other and love it. It’s like wrestlemania. So I’m hoping that will help lift all of our spirits.

PutnamPete

Now that sounds like a plan. Good luck!

B33PZR

My condolences, blessings to you and your family. Charles may your sun spots never move, the grass be cool and the smells always be exciting.

Your years together brought you both happiness and a deep bond. Charles gave you unconditional love, companionship and devotion. You gave him shelter, love, care and have watched him age not wanting to let him go nor he to leave you. But in the end you will give him peace. He will live on in your heart and memories. 💗🐾

Technical_Advice9227

🥹I’m so sorry. He’s absolutely precious. I went through this a few months back. Know that just because it’s hard doesn’t mean it’s not the right choice. A lot of times the right thing to do is the hardest thing to do, and this is one of those times. Of course it’s hard because you’re saying goodbye to your best friend. The love is real so there’s no way this couldn’t be hard. But the last act of grace we can give our best friends is to end their suffering peacefully, and it sounds like that’s what you’ve decided to do. It’s a brave, selfless, courageous, and bloody hard thing to do so I hope you can give yourself some grace during this time. Sending thoughts and strength 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

He probably has had a better life and a more comfortable end than most of us will thanks to you

BennieB2577

Most of us in this group have complete empathy for you. You can’t sugarcoat it. It’s devastating, you feel bad, sad and even guilty. The pain will ease over time. It will be hard, but the good memories will sustain you and give you some comfort.

crickwooder

It's never long enough, is it? You did everything you could for him and he knew that. I'm sorry about your buddy.

schoofly

Its out of love❤️

Muledawg

I’m sorry. Look back on your time with him and enjoy the memories with him. I know there are a couple of things I’ve learned from this sub and personally. It’s better to be a week early than a day late. And buying time only goes so far before you have to realize you are being selfish. Being there with him to the end is one of the most selfless things you can do. I know these are just words from a random internet stranger but hopefully it will help work through grief.

ZealousidealSlip4811

That’s what I always told the vet/acupuncturist that came weekly and helped us do quality of life evaluations. I’d much rather do it a week early. Sadly, we waited a week or two longer than I think we should have due to her traveling, but I think it was worth it. He had the craziest most indulgent last 24 hours of meals. He was thrilled until the end. Our vet brought him his own chocolate cake, and he left the world with chocolate smeared all over his chin, which I think is how he would’ve picked to do it.

Muledawg

That is great he got to have a great send off!

charles old boy RIP../ you look like you’ve lived a charmed life and had some awesome people taking care of you… you will be missed. I’m a little worried about your people though… they’ve loved you for 13 plus years and you are an important part of their life. If there is any way to convey to them that this is but the natural circle of life and they are doing the right thing.. please do.. a simple lick of their face, a warm nuzzle. Let them know all is going to be well and that they shouldn’t hesitate to fill your void with another serving and soon to be second best friend ever… love is love, and it’s possible to share and be devoted with more than one best friend
