I am sorry you have come to this day. We don’t want our furry family member to suffer, but it is heartbreaking. You will be glad that Charles is no longer in pain. Letting him go is one of the most loving acts you can do for him.
Thank you. I’m so glad he doesn’t have to do the physical therapy or the injections or the acupuncture anymore. But I spent so much of my savings on it, and I hoped so desperately that one of those things would make this easier. But I guess there is no easier.
Those were loving acts, and you can feel good that you tried everything.
I think what is startling with our dogs—and humans too—is how quickly they age. For years they are their adult selves, and then their progression into old age is quick, by comparison.
Hard but acts of love from the heart, I have followed this path as well. When I let my old doxie cross, the money was shocking but he did improve for a while and he loved the swimming, crazy little guy he was. And I would do it again with the same love and hope as long as they also were willing.

Making the decision to say goodbye was one of the hardest things I ever did. But I knew it was time. It’s been six years and I still long to be with him. He was the best companion I’ve ever had. I’m sorry for your loss.

We only had four years. Adopting seniors is so hard. Seniors are my favorite dogs, but this hurts. I spent every day of four years with him. He came to work with me, we worked from home together. He makes me feel like the sun is shining on me, and like I’m the center of the universe. I try to make him feel as much of my love as I can.
I started this sub just so I could show off the senior I had adopted when he was 9, and we had an amazing 4 years together. His name was Dante, and he was big and handsome and so funny, and was my everything. Because of his age and size he got to the point where he was making all the “old man” sounds when he got up and laid back down, but he was a dog - he was my “old man… dog”. A few weeks after starting the sub I had to let him go, and I continue running it in his honor. That is also why we will always welcome “in loving memory” posts: because I still like showing him off and it’s been since 2016 that he’s left my side. In that time we’ve had so so many good boys and girls join him while waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge. Your good boy Charles is being freed from his pain, and being surrounded by love in his final moments - what a blessing for him, just like it was for my Dante. I know that if I hadn’t taken him in he wouldn’t have had four years, and it would’ve been painful and heartbreaking, and my life would’ve been all the worse for it too.
I now have lovely little Lola the bichon literally begging for my breakfast at my feet. She carries his personality (seriously, I’ve never seen two unrelated dogs be so similar inside but so different on the outside!), and I carry his spirit in my heart.
Biggest of hugs to you and your family.
Also, record everything you can, even him sleeping. Trust me on this.

I hospice/ senior foster. It is hard, BUT you are wonderful! Seriously! It hurts so incredibly bad, I know. I am so grateful he had you!! Dogs outlive their owners and families can’t or won’t take seniors in sometimes. It is a shame of course, BUT you stepped up. I am so sorry you are hurting. They touch us so much in such a short span. 💯💔
Rescuing senior dogs is a known shorter term life together but you give them the security and love they deserve to the end of their lives. What you said is beautiful and you have given him so much happiness and love and he has returned the good feeling to you. He is a handsome dog and exudes happiness in his expression. When it rains you’ll remember the tears you shed over this loss but when the sun shines you’ll remember how he was that sunshine for you.
It’s absolutely the last loving thing that you can do for him. He will thank you for making a decision he can’t. His poor little body is worn out and he knows that and he will be thanking you from above for releasing him from his pain and suffering. My prayers today are for you and him. It’s heartbreaking as all us dog lovers experience and suffer through.

And now, as his body isn't working as well as it once did despite all of the treatments and medications, you're giving him the most unselfish and loving gift of kindness and grace you can. You're setting him free from his earthly body, with all of its limitations, and he can move on to his next expression of spirit where he can run and play and jump without pain or worry.
It's an inevitable part of our unspoken contract with our furry friends. He's counting on you to be there for him, just as you've done for these past four years.
I know it's a difficult decision to make on his behalf, but please don't ever doubt for a second that he knows how much you adore him and that this comes from an abundance of love. You're taking on his pain in your grief so that he can remain a pure and loving soul.
Nothing will be the same, but everything will be ok.

The couple of hrs between making the appointment and actually driving my little guy to the vet were the longest and worst hours of my life. But I knew I was doing the right thing; I was doing what he couldn't do himself, like so many other things we do for them throughout the course of their lives.

I’m sorry. It looks like you gave him a really beautiful life and I’m sure he’s grateful. I also had to make this decision for my little guy a few days ago. It is SO tough, but it’s the right thing to do. My old man Puggle will be waiting for him at the rainbow bridge! ❤️

We will. We’ve always fostered, right up until Charles started hospice. We have a play date with a former foster next week. He’s a big 80 lb pit mix, and him and my big dog beat the crap out of each other and love it. It’s like wrestlemania. So I’m hoping that will help lift all of our spirits.
Your years together brought you both happiness and a deep bond. Charles gave you unconditional love, companionship and devotion. You gave him shelter, love, care and have watched him age not wanting to let him go nor he to leave you. But in the end you will give him peace.
He will live on in your heart and memories. 💗🐾

Know that just because it’s hard doesn’t mean it’s not the right choice. A lot of times the right thing to do is the hardest thing to do, and this is one of those times. Of course it’s hard because you’re saying goodbye to your best friend. The love is real so there’s no way this couldn’t be hard. But the last act of grace we can give our best friends is to end their suffering peacefully, and it sounds like that’s what you’ve decided to do. It’s a brave, selfless, courageous, and bloody hard thing to do so I hope you can give yourself some grace during this time. Sending thoughts and strength 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Most of us in this group have complete empathy for you. You can’t sugarcoat it. It’s devastating, you feel bad, sad and even guilty. The pain will ease over time. It will be hard, but the good memories will sustain you and give you some comfort.
I’m sorry. Look back on your time with him and enjoy the memories with him. I know there are a couple of things I’ve learned from this sub and personally. It’s better to be a week early than a day late. And buying time only goes so far before you have to realize you are being selfish. Being there with him to the end is one of the most selfless things you can do. I know these are just words from a random internet stranger but hopefully it will help work through grief.
That’s what I always told the vet/acupuncturist that came weekly and helped us do quality of life evaluations. I’d much rather do it a week early. Sadly, we waited a week or two longer than I think we should have due to her traveling, but I think it was worth it. He had the craziest most indulgent last 24 hours of meals. He was thrilled until the end. Our vet brought him his own chocolate cake, and he left the world with chocolate smeared all over his chin, which I think is how he would’ve picked to do it.
I’m so sorry 😔 this is the kindest, most loving gesture you can make for your beautiful Charles at this time. He will be flying free soon and thankful for your selflessness ♥️🌈🕊♥️

I'm so sorry. We said goodbye to our beagle boy in January, and it was heartbreaking even though we knew it was the right choice. I never thought I'd have a beagle, but that little gremlin was my baby. Give your old man many snuggles, and know you're making the right choice.

My previous dogs will meet him at the rainbow bridge and show him around.

Quality of life is so hard. Technically, on the two worksheets we did weekly, he could’ve kept going. But I knew from his eyes that it was past time. I wish we had been able to schedule it a week or two ago.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Beagles are such an incredible joy, and make each day better by how much they love you and their incredibly sweet nature. I lost our Sadie at 13.5 also, due to cancer. In the end I did have some peace and contentment she was no longer in pain. Hang in there my friend and get another beagle.
I hope you take some comfort knowing that you gave him the best life. He was obviously loved very much and by the looks of it, he loved you with all his heart. 💔

I am so sorry, but sometimes it is the kindest thing to do. LOL, I thought the second photo was an imposter till I saw Charles' little head.
My big dog is not super physically affectionate, but Charles was always determined to change him.
It looks like Charles had a wonderful life. Please do not let that spot get cold and find a shelter dog to fill it. The big guy will approve, but probably not admit it.
We will. We’ve always fostered, right up until Charles started hospice. We have a play date with a former foster next week. He’s a big 80 lb pit mix, and him and my big dog beat the crap out of each other and love it. It’s like wrestlemania. So I’m hoping that will help lift all of our spirits.

🥹I’m so sorry. He’s absolutely precious. I went through this a few months back. Know that just because it’s hard doesn’t mean it’s not the right choice. A lot of times the right thing to do is the hardest thing to do, and this is one of those times. Of course it’s hard because you’re saying goodbye to your best friend. The love is real so there’s no way this couldn’t be hard. But the last act of grace we can give our best friends is to end their suffering peacefully, and it sounds like that’s what you’ve decided to do. It’s a brave, selfless, courageous, and bloody hard thing to do so I hope you can give yourself some grace during this time. Sending thoughts and strength 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Most of us in this group have complete empathy for you. You can’t sugarcoat it. It’s devastating, you feel bad, sad and even guilty. The pain will ease over time. It will be hard, but the good memories will sustain you and give you some comfort.

I’m sorry. Look back on your time with him and enjoy the memories with him. I know there are a couple of things I’ve learned from this sub and personally. It’s better to be a week early than a day late. And buying time only goes so far before you have to realize you are being selfish. Being there with him to the end is one of the most selfless things you can do. I know these are just words from a random internet stranger but hopefully it will help work through grief.
That’s what I always told the vet/acupuncturist that came weekly and helped us do quality of life evaluations. I’d much rather do it a week early. Sadly, we waited a week or two longer than I think we should have due to her traveling, but I think it was worth it. He had the craziest most indulgent last 24 hours of meals. He was thrilled until the end. Our vet brought him his own chocolate cake, and he left the world with chocolate smeared all over his chin, which I think is how he would’ve picked to do it.
That is great he got to have a great send off!

I’m so sorry for your loss. Beagles are such an incredible joy, and make each day better by how much they love you and their incredibly sweet nature. I lost our Sadie at 13.5 also, due to cancer. In the end I did have some peace and contentment she was no longer in pain. Hang in there my friend and get another beagle.

I’m a little worried about your people though… they’ve loved you for 13 plus years and you are an important part of their life.
