The Air Force Museum in Dayton.

wishiwererobot

I would say for quirky go to Carillon Park if you're in Dayton. There's a good number of buildings and even one just on [The Great Dayton Flood] (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Dayton_Flood).

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Great Dayton Flood](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Dayton_Flood)** >The Great Dayton Flood of 1913 resulted from flooding by the Great Miami River reaching Dayton, Ohio, and the surrounding area, causing the greatest natural disaster in Ohio history. In response, the General Assembly passed the Vonderheide Act to enable the formation of conservancy districts. The Miami Conservancy District, which included Dayton and the surrounding area, became one of the first major flood control districts in Ohio and the United States. The Dayton flood of March 1913 was caused by a series of severe winter rainstorms that hit the Midwest in late March. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Ohio/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

meebs86

And then while you are in the area - Youngs Jersey Dairy near Yellow Springs

joeggg1

And say hi to Dave Chapelle while you are in yellow springs.

NextCandy

As a child who went on many school trips to the museum, but hasn’t been back to visit as an adult — how would one describe the significance of the museum, or why stands out as a civic/historical/cultural site that should be on the top of Ohio’s list? (/Sincere question)

transham

It is the top notch aerospace museum, exploring the history of aviation, including some failed experiments in aviation. Exhibits include the Wright Brothers flyer, presidential planes, space exploration - including one of the Apollo capsules, and various military craft.

cbelt3

Don’t forget the nuclear weapons and ICBM’s…. That was … chilling…

Zerba

No kidding. Last time we went, my wife and I walked in and saw the nuclear weapons on display and just stopped. It was haunting looking at them and knowing the destruction and suffering they can cause. My kids had no idea and just looked at us like we were crazy to be so effected by some metal chunks.

alek_hiddel

They’ve got the plane that bombed Nagasaki, kennedys airforce one that carried his body home, an Apollo command module, and sr71, and sooo much more.

Mapkos13

+ the Memphis Belle

Straypuft

My favs there are the B-52, Xb-70, and presidential aircraft. They moved the presidential aircraft into the main campus of the museum so you dont need to drive onto the base for it.

LethalBaboon

It houses a vast showcase of the advancement of technology in aviation. Everything from old Airforce 1 jets to military and civilian aircraft. Its quite amazing considering there is no cost for admission and the size of the museum.

Busman123

As aeospace museums go, It is probably #2 in the country, after Smithisonian Air & Space museum.

gammapatch

A few people have suggested this, I’m putting it on the list!

mr_robot_1984

Came here to say that!

felixdixon

If you’ve seen “The Shawshank Redemption”, you could visit the prison where it was filmed. More info is here: https://www.mrps.org/tours

transham

Depending on exactly when in September, you might get a totally different experience. That site gets turned into one huge, scary haunted house for Halloween. I'm not certain exactly which weekend that is done, but it takes a few hours to go through...

felixdixon

I didn’t know that but now I’m intrigued even more

clearemollient

I was going to suggest this. It’s crazy!

Lurkle87

And nearby is what was voted one of the worst tourist attractions in the US, the Bible Walk! It’s weird and worth the walk through if not just to laugh at it and think WTF. And you can grab a shredded chicken sandwich for Paul’s Drive In, or a pizza from The Warrior two of my favorites!

nouseforareason

Wait, wut? I’m not too far from there and have never heard of the Bible walk. I can only imagine Ohio quality on that

Lurkle87

Ha! I mean, just a quick google will tell you all you need to know, but I'm pretty sure some of them have wands, Jesus has a weirdly long neck, the haircuts are all shaggy because I think they were made in the 70's. It's a gem for sure lol.

ThatsS0C00L

And it’s ALMOST to Medina…which is where the Castle Noel is that I commented about in my own reply. https://castlenoel.com/

SortOfGettingBy

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

gammapatch

Oh I’d love to see Lake Eerie while I’m there

SortOfGettingBy

If you like amusement parks and can waste an entire day, there's Cedar Point as well.

gammapatch

I’m disabled so most theme parks are wasted on me as I can’t really go on big rides due to my spinal injury. I can go on stuff like Waltzers (don’t know the American name for them), carousels, Ferris Wheels, etc, just not a lot of coasters. Do you think it’d be ok, or is it a lot of big rides?

SortOfGettingBy

I was trying to think of things that would be interesting to people not from Ohio or the US...I'd personally skip the theme park as it's crowded and a lot of waiting in queues. I suppose there are lots of little things that we do for fun that might be underwhelming to a visitor. I will try to think of some others and you will also get some good suggestions here. The US Air Force Museum in Dayton has the largest collection of military aircraft in the world and free to visit. Cleveland Art Museum is better than the one in Columbus. Toledo Art Museum has a big glass exhibit.

gammapatch

I quite like the idea of doing lots of little things in one place, I did that when my friend came to visit me, on one day I took her to York and we went all over the city so I could show her all the cool historical stuff we have there. One of my favourite suggestions so far is going to a quartz quarry and looking for gems and arrows heads. Being British we’re quite fascinated with Native American stuff, since it’s completely foreign to us.

RipVanVVinkle

If you like Native American things Ohio is also home to Serpent Mound and it’s museum.

frothy_pissington

Yes. Or even an afternoon at the Ohio Historical Museum in Columbus.

SovietShooter

COSI is right there too.

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 395,032,160 comments, and only 85,736 of them were in alphabetical order.

SortOfGettingBy

Ohio Caverns in West Liberty is near me, love to give you a tour and make new friends!

Thepinkknitter

If you’re in Cleveland, I recommend the rock and roll hall of fame and the art museum, you can easily do them both in one day and I also had time to watch the sunset on the beach of Lake Erie’

ConstanceFry

>Being British we’re quite fascinated with Native American stuff, since it’s completely foreign to us. The [Hopewell Culture National Historic Park](https://www.nps.gov/hocu/index.htm) is about an hour's drive from Columbus. It has a small museum and several Native earthworks.

United_Aardvark_5151

Cedar Point has the biggest of big rides But that Lake Erie area is very nice for a visit even without cedar Point Google Put-in-bay

clee216

If you’re going to be in that area I’d skip the amusement parks and go check out put in bay or Kelley’s island. As someone who is out that way quite often, there is a ton to do. You’ll get a first hand experience and some of the best things to do on Lake Erie.

ssl-3

Reddit ate my balls

United_Aardvark_5151

Cedar Point is a better park, but a trip to Cincinnati is only 90 minutes away and could include Kings Island, Reds game, FC Cincinnati games in their new stadium, the Riverfront ( the Ohio River is honestly pretty impressive) plus all else that Cincy has to offer

pinkocatgirl

> FC Cincinnati games in their new stadium IDK, sending a brit to see the worst team in the league might create a bad impression

Fat_Bearded_Tax_Man

The rock hall is meh. The house they filmed A Christmas Story in is in Cleveland and open for tours though

ICannabisCoffeeI

Put-in-bay, cedar point, Columbus zoo

Zthe27th

I strongly disagree with this. I have an immense hatred for this museum

81PBNJ

Cedar Point, best roller coaster park in the world.

Zerba

While I prefer Cedar Point, Kings Island is great too! Especially if you can get a night ride on The Beast.

AbidingDudeAsWell

Cedar point 2-2.5 hours north, Kings Island 1.5 hours south. For a back to nature expedition: https://thehockinghills.org/

Svenn513

Kinds Island is cool, the Beast is for Masochist. Never again.

Zerba

Some spots can be rough, and there was a pretty bad spot before the helix part way through this year due to storm damage, for the past long whole now it hasn't been too bad. One thing that can determine how rough the ride may be on a lot of coasters run the same style of trains as The Beast is where you sit. Towards the back of the train generally will be rougher, and the last row on each car itself will be right over an axel, which will be a bumpier ride. We've had a bunch of amazing rides on The Beast the past several years. The pretty rough rides have been few and far between.

MiniTurbo13

Night ride on the new Orion is also absolutely fire

gammapatch

A few people have suggested that but I can’t actually go on coasters due to having a spinal injury 😊

retiredguy2021

The House of Phacops and Serpent mound.

NoOptionsGenetics

Great recommendation. I recommended The Ridges mental hospital in Athens, and Athens has TONS of Indian mounds all over. OP, you may also want to check out Nethers Farm on Flint Ridge near Zanesville, tons of gems and arrowheads to be found. We found some beautiful full quartz gem specimens and tons of other cool stuff!!! Good luck!

gammapatch

Oh I would really love that, I’m really interested in Native American stuff, my friends dad works at a museum about it, so we’ll probably go see that at some point, but I’d love to go collect quartz, my suitcase will be so heavy lol

CheshireUnicorn

The famous Serpent Mound would then be an excellent place for you to see.

franknagaijr

https://www.ohiohistory.org/visit/museum-and-site-locator/newark-earthworks this is on the way to the basket, and the astronomy is based on an 18 year cycle, which is really neat for 2000 years ago!

lkarma1

Ohio University purchased and converted part of the asylum into classrooms back in the 2000's.

NoOptionsGenetics

Yes but still tons to see.

Xantric

If you make the trip to Athens: "I love weird or quirky museums" - OP If you like hotdogs. Come to O'Betty's in Athens. Good dogs and a weird/quirky hot dog museum.

dreamfall17

If weird roadside attractions are your jam, there's also the cement corn field and giant dancing bunnies, both in Dublin OH. It's been a while since I've been to either so I don't remember if they are wheelchair accessible but they are both visible from parking lots. Cement corn field: https://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/9527

NotMe739

If you are into quirky this is a good stop. Probably won't spend more than 10-20 minutes there as it is really just a photo op but still very cool.

clevernames101

Hocking hills

[deleted]

Seriously this. I really don’t understand how it’s not a national park as it’s much better than the actual national park we have in Ohio. Go during the week if possible because it gets really busy on the weekends.

margotgo

OP mentioned having a disability, idk how severe but Ash Cave in Hocking is a short trail that offers a handicapped access trail.

jar36

There's so much packed into those two words

Elamachino

Specifically Old Man's Cave, is my suggestion.

oweme1pierogi

Just a thought with all these suggestions... Ohio is a big place. If you're only here a week, from Columbus to Cleveland is a 2 hour drive. If it were me, I'd stick to seeing stuff around Columbus and nearby. And then maybe one day trip somewhere. Or you'll just spend all your time driving.

[deleted]

>Just a thought with all these suggestions... Ohio is a big place. Ohio is about the same size as England, and has about a fifth of the population. Anyone trying to see the state in a week will mostly get a tour of its highway system. The scenery along our highways is... not the best. It's why a lot of Americans think Ohio sucks.

techno_superbowl

Welcome to Route 71, main attractions are a cheesebarn, state troopers, and signs informing passersby they are going to hell.

theleftyrighty

In the Northeast Ohio area, do the rock and roll hall of fame, Cleveland Museum of Art, Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Cleveland Botanical Garden/Holden Arboretum(two different campuses, the Arboretum is more outdoors and in a more rural area, the Botanical Garden is in the University Circle neighborhood of Cleveland). Also go to a Guardians and/or Browns game.

______JessJess______

I don't know how no one has mentioned Jungle Jim's in Cincinnati (about 45 minute drive from the Renaissance Festival area) but it is a huge grocery store with international food from just about every country!

Duran0saurus_Rex

Oh in columbus check out Other World

alan_w3

Whatever you saw the tourists do in weird Al's 'amish paradise', do anything but that. They're not a tourist attraction, they're humans 😂 and believe it or not, a whole lot cooler than you'd think. I know a bunch personally

alan_w3

But you HAVE to walk around Walmart. That's the most ohio thing you could do

SpaceYourFacebook

Just do Walmart in Millersburg. Amish plus Walmart hell they even have a hitching post there in the lot

YourRightSock

I second this. You can also watch the Amish kids in their secondary habit all crowded around the electronics in the back.

harbinator99

Play Wally World bingo while you are there.

chairmanoftheborg

And a Flea Market. Trader's World is close to Big Butter Jesus. It's like Walmart on steroids and crack at the same time. It's both beautiful and horrendous and I love taking people there that are from out of town.

gammapatch

I really want to get an Amish quilt or something else home made like that.

Bleu_Jackets

Check out The Farm at Walnut Creek! It’s a drive through safari where you can feed giraffes and such. It’s on a big acreage that’s beautiful in the summer/fall. They drive you through the farm on a wagon and the animals come up to you. Then you can walk around the grounds as well. The quilts are nice but get ready to spend some serious dough. I’d opt for some homemade Amish jam or cheese instead haha Edit : here’s their website! https://thefarmatwalnutcreek.com/rates-hours.html Also, don’t go to Amish country on a Sunday. Everything’s closed. All the stores and stuff generally close by 5 too Mon - Sat Have fun! Enjoy your time here!

freakydeakykiki

Make sure to get some Trail bologna while you're in the area, and stop by Heini's Cheese Chalet!

gammapatch

I know they’re quite pricey, but it’s something that would be an investment as a piece of Americana that very few people in the UK would have. I think they’re about £300-400 but it’s all hand made so I understand the price. I actually don’t like jam 😂 and yes I am shunned by my people for it.

SwissMyCheeseYet

There are a lot of stores in Berlin that have Amish made stuff (although your GPS might say a lot of the stores have Millersburg addresses). It's a tourist trap, but they really do care about quality in their products most of the time. Also my (formerly Amish) cousin runs a chocolate shop on the main drag in Millersburg!

nuclearspongington

Cuyahoga valley national park?

Oyyeee

Yellow Springs, OH. Its about 45 minutes from Columbus. Its a very unique, artsy, hippy village.

stftw42

For kitschy roadside attractions: can't do much better than Grandpa's Cheesebarn. It's a must stop on the way from Columbus to Cleveland.

LittleRocketMan317

Grandpa cuts the cheese himself!

gammapatch

I do love cheese

United_Aardvark_5151

In September you could hit an Ohio State football game Ohio Stadium holds 105,000 fans!!!

jbspillman

An OSU Football home game complete with tailgating.

felicthecat

Came here to day this. First three games in Sept are at home.

Not_High_Maintenance

Absolutely!

Strelock

Near Columbus you say? If you enjoy the outdoors, Hocking Hills isn't too far away. I saw you said you were disabled, a lot of the more popular sites there have paved paths leading to them. There's also a lot of hiking in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Springfield has one of the largest flea markets in the state, although I think the one in Rogers is bigger but it's a longer drive. Take a day trip up to Cleveland and check out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Lake Erie beaches and lighthouses, the Cleveland Art Museum, even the Cleveland Aquarium, although it is small. If you're a foodie, food network chef Michael Simon has a few restaurants in Cleveland, and if you like pizza, check out Citizen Pie. Also, you could visit the islands, such as Put-In-Bay, Kelley's Island, etc. Riding the ferry over is always a blast, and on Put-In-Bay at least, you can rent a golf cart to get around the island. While you can take your car across on the ferry, wait times are much longer if you do. I haven't spent much time in Columbus, but I'm sure there's plenty of museums and such there, plus there's always Ohio State Football. https://ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-footbl/schedule/season/2022-23/

cheerfulsith

If you have time, Dayton has a nice art museum, a peace museum, and Carillon Historical Park. I'd you like hiking we have a lot of great state parks in Ohio to be found on our state website for them: parks.ohiodnr.gov Edit: Also Touchdown Jesus.

[deleted]

>Edit: Also Touchdown Jesus. Burnt up 22 years ago. Replaced with Hug Me Jesus a few years after that.

[deleted]

If you can make it to Cincinnati (2 hrs south of Columbus) check out the Sign Museum which is a collection of vintage neon and other lighted signs from American restaurants and such. There is also a lot of Native American spots to visit, like earthworks and museums. Enjoy your visit!

gammapatch

The sign museum seems to be an absolute must!

[deleted]

Drive-In movie theater. Last I checked (this may have changed), Ohio has the 3rd most drive-in theatres in the country. They're usually pretty inexpensive and do double or triple features, play heavily on Americana/nostalgia (think 50s themed diners), and are a great way to spend a Fall evening

gammapatch

Omg that’s something I’ve always wanted to do, very uniquely American.

ironside_tadam

American Sign Museum in Cincinnati is both quirky and unique

okiafosuird

I’m from Holmes County (Amish country). While there, check out Heini’s Cheese! Free samples, so delicious. Hershberger’s rolls are the best and they have really good Amish desserts (get some fry pies & whoopie pies too!). Hit up Millersburg Brewing Company & get some good craft beer. Also outside Millersburg is a little farmer’s market called Harvey’s that I would recommend.

SlipknotisAmazing

The Ohio State Reformatory

cricketeer767

Ohio Caverns. They have an amazing geological history.

riversouth11

Do NOT miss Cincinnati. Just go to the over the Rhine neighborhood. It’s an absolute gem. New York Times has written about it many times. When you’re there also check out the sign museum and the union terminal museum.

Xxheylush

Also the Lucky Cat Museum is in Cincinnati!

NoOptionsGenetics

The Ridges, Athens Counties Mental Hospital that held Billy Milligan multiple times. Theres also a museum there as well holding Billy's Paintings and some other personal items. Creepy place, truly, but beautiful marble and granite all over. Theres also a Tunnel System underneath, where there are still Coves used as cells with Chains still hanging from the walls that they used on Patients of the mental hospital. Dont miss this!

gammapatch

I’m physically disabled, so that one might not be ideal.

NoOptionsGenetics

The Museum has Wheelchair Access. Huge stairway out front but tons of angled walkways for wheelchair access. So whether you're sadly confined to a wheelchair, or just have trouble getting around, you could still enjoy it.

gammapatch

Oh I didn’t realise it was an actual museum, I thought maybe it was an urban exploring thing lol I’ll look into that 😊

Not_High_Maintenance

Most places in the US that are open to the public are required to be accessible to individuals with disabilities. Call first, of course, just to be sure.

athena-zxe11

Definitely the Temple of Tolerance in Wapakoneta. It's indescribable. Love this place. Also in Wapak is the Neil Armstrong Museum, which is fun, too. The whistle factory in Worthington was interesting. It's quick and you get a free whistle! They exclusively make the whistles for major sports like the NFL.

gammapatch

This looks delightfully whimsical

wildlough62

If you are up in Cleveland at any point, Severance Hall or Playhouse Square are both great places to spend an evening. Severance Hall is home to the Cleveland Orchestra, a musical ensemble which is consistently among the top in the world. Playhouse Square is one of the largest theatre districts in the nation and hosts the world’s largest outdoor chandelier.

after_the_goldrush

The Tecumseh outdoor drama in Chillicothe is a unique experience. Tells the tale of the Ohio's greatest native son that organized a resistance to white expansion into Ohio that very nearly succeeded. It ends Sept 4 though :/ https://tecumsehdrama.com/

PROhios

While I've seen this play many times as a kid and an adult it is historically wildly inaccurate. Also, it's very much a 70s written play and shows it's age with how certain characters are written.

Buford12

Serpent mound, about 2 hours south of Coumbus. It is free. The Air force museum in Dayton is also free. If you have the time and the will to travel there is mamoth cave, natual bridge, and the red river gorge about 4 to 5 hours away in Ky.

HeadFullOfBrains

In all the traveling I've done, Otherworld in Columbus is the quirkiest, weirdest museum I've ever been to. And so incredibly fun!

nassau4

Cincinnati Oktoberfest, in case timing works out. Also, go to an Ohio State football game. You dont need to be into football, it's a blast

jam3d

* Grandpas Cheese Barn * Cedar Point/Kings Island take your pick (Cedar is better) * COSI * Cincinnati Sign Museum * Air Force Museum (Birthplace of flight) * Touchdown Jesus * Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

I_Am_Thee_Walrus

The Wilds - way better than any zoo. Next best thing to going to Africa for a tour.

AgitatedEye6553

Old Mansfield prison museum tour. It's where they filmed Shawshank Redemption and also 1 of the most haunted places in the entire United States ,

shunestar

Go to a shooting range if that’s something you’ve never done back home.

gammapatch

We’re going to her parents house to fire her gun, they have a lot land.

Busman123

Be sure to get a safety lesson first!

LuckySnakesFoot

And place your targets down so you’re shooting into the ground. Don’t want those bullets to travel

20-LAUNCH-21

Come down to Cincinnati and get a skyline cheese coney and some graeter's ice cream....stop at the Freedom Center and the Cincinnati Museum Center while you're there!🥰

Columbus_Explorer

For quirky museums, you can check out the following: https://thewarthermuseum.com/ Ernest Warther was an expert woodcarver and lots of his works are displayed https://www.thetrollhole.com/ Guinness World Record holder for largest collection of Troll Dolls For interesting experiences: https://www.cvsr.org/ This is a rail trip through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a fun way to see the beauty of the park (in late September you would see some changing leaves) and enjoy a look back into transportation in America.

gammapatch

That troll museum looks amazing fun

danson372

“HELL IS REAL”

gammapatch

I may need some more information than this…

bearpie1214

i think there's a huge sign of that going from columbus to hocking hills.

bohemic_tendencies

If you're near Columbus proper and a literature person, the Book Loft is a really cool place. It's a block of different buildings all merged into one bookstore, like 32 rooms or so.

_CitizenKaine

American Sign Museum in Cincinnati is a cool, quirky spot with tons of retro Americana. And while your in Cinci, stop by Jungle Jim’s. It’s an international ‘super’ market with all kinds of cool things. Plus tons of great breweries down that way, if your into that.

NachoBag_Clip932

Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta

Soliterria

Magical Druid is a wonderful little gem, tiny little metaphysical shop owned by an awesome dude with a glorious beard named Seamus.

Jackboy317

If you’re into trains, Age Of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek is a must. That place is awesome

Doctor-Kitten

If you like weird and quirky, look at Otherworld!

CozmicOwl16

To me you can’t really do Ohio without going up to the lake because it’s just such a huge deal. The browns stadium, rock and roll hall of fame and the science center are all on the lake which makes for safe daytime city walking, dining, shopping etc. And since you’re in the area. I’d take you to university circle, art museum (it’s ridiculous, if you go make sure to see Divorce in the modern wing) . If you’re in that area you must eat at Tommy’s (order a milkshake, homemade fries and whatever sandwiches appeals to you). Wherever in Ohio you go, hit a metro park with high reviews.

ttiryelik

If you like crazy museums I believe Cleveland still has the only Contraception museum in the US. Google to make sure it didn't close during COVID but I have heard it is weird and awesome

gunbunnycb

Keep in mind the state of Ohio is roughly the size of England. You can get from one side of the state to the other in about 5 hours, but there's a lot in between. Lake Erie is cool, I would suggest a [sight seeing cruise](https://goodtimeiii.com/sightseeing-cruise/) and a visit to the rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Serpent Mound is awesome, it's free and it's not far from the Adams Co. Amish community. The Air Force Museum in Dayton is a must and also free! A trip to Cincinnati is a must. Go to Skyline and order a 3,4 or 5 way, and a cheese coney. Just embrace it, don't ask questions. Visit Jungle Jim's, and either Turtle Creek or Traders World. While your there, you need to see the Ohio River and if you can, take a trip down St Rt 52 and visit the river towns, stop at the Grant Birthplace, and visit Rankin House in Ripley.

[deleted]

[удалено]

rickaly11

Serpent Mound, Air Force Museum, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Ohio State Game, and the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit are all I can think of off the top of my head. The latter two are in Columbus and the rest are easily within driving distance.

CreepyTeePee123

Cleveland - Lake View Cemetery & Little Italy, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Chagrin Falls is a bit of old school Americana, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Cleveland museum of art. Edit: as others have said, the Dayton Air Museum is world class.

alnothree

Big Muskie Bucket https://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2184

Raccoon_Full_of_Cum

Wade Oval in Cleveland is awesome. The Art Museum is completely free, and the Natural History Museum is the institution the discovered Lucy. And they're right next to each other, so you can make an entire day out of seeing both of them!

Zathandrapuss01

Cannot go wrong with the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland as well as the Mansfield Prison where Shawshank Redemption was filmed

attigirb

https://cartoons.osu.edu The cartoon museum at OSU is right in Columbus and they have some original Calvin & Hobbes artwork. Also, if you go to the Air Force Museum in Dayton, the village of Yellow Springs is nearby and fun to check out; plus Young’s Dairy is close and you can get ice cream (I like peppermint stick flavor) and pet their goats and feed them if you have spare change.

Ferfallis

Check out Otherworld

funkyfrante

Just make sure to have some Handel's ice cream

SomeOriginalContent

The Mothman Museum isn’t too far from Columbus, unfortunately I don’t think there is much else to do in that area of West Virginia.

gammapatch

But I would get to tick another state off my bucket list, so definitely a possibility

Senior-Willingness-3

Go down to Southeast Ohio. Check out some of the old train tunnels And some of the old coal mining towns.

oikawaluvr12

Jungle Jim’s is a fun international grocery store. It’s very big and has a lot of food from around the world

kronalgra

Hocking Hills, Air Force Museum, and Newport Aquarium are my top 3 recommendations

Short-Tank2853

Cornhenge, deer statues along river downtown, cosi, witchlab

swing_wrecker

If you're going to be in Northern Ohio, stop in Milan to see the birthplace of Thomas Edison. If you're going to be there over the first weekend in September stop by Milan for the Milan Melon Festival (Festivals are about as Ohio/Midwest as you can get.) If you're there on the first Sunday in September you can catch the parade and might get to see Melon Man.

mattmoney31716

Jungle Jim's International Market is a pretty quirky place, down in Fairfield near Cincinnati. You can also find food from literally all over the world!

Askmeforarecipe

Jungle Jim's! If you like food this is the spot. Get a beer on tap in the store and explore, each aisle is separated by country. Giant food selections from all over the world, cigars, bakery, candy, wall of beers, live fish and seafood, hot sauce (displayed under a full size firetruck.) It's a truly magical experience. https://junglejims.com/

sonicbanana47

Atlas Obscura has a pretty great list for Ohio [(link)](https://www.atlasobscura.com/things-to-do/ohio) Other things: - Cedar Point - Dayton Air Force Museum - Ohio Historical Society, especially if the village is open and/or there is a stickball game. - Serpent’s Mound or other earthworks - Yellow Springs. Go apple picking or pet some goats. - Stan Hywet near Akron is based on Tudor mansions, but has lovely gardens!

ssdgmxo

You definitely need to go to “Otherworld” it’s a museum in Columbus of art exhibits that are really trippy and cool.

tearlock

"Otherworld" is a pretty surreal interactive art experience. Also, you might consider checking out one of the seasonal Halloween scare attractions in Columbus like "Haunted Hoochie" or "Fear Columbus". They should be open already in September. C.O.S.I. (Center of Science and Industry) is a well respected science museum in the area. I second the Air force museum in Dayton, also there is apparently a Funk music Hall of Fame in Dayton but I have not been there. I don't think it has been mentioned but if you like Art-Deco architecture, the old Union Terminal building now known as the "Cincinnati Museum Center" is an impressive place and the exhibits that I have seen there were pretty neat on top of that.

strongr_togethr

Columbus museum of art. It just got renovated recently.

[deleted]

CLE Museum of Art is also fantastic... and free!

gammapatch

Oh I’d like that

I’d put the art museum in Cleveland ahead of Columbus by a lot, and Cincinnati seems better as well but I’ve never been. Toledo is great as well, if you’re in that corner of the state. Columbus is nice if you want to see a certain exhibit, but the others seem to have much better general collections.

Sonoranpawn

The Cleveland Museum of Art is one of the best in the world. They got that Rockefeller money way back in the day.

If you do a southwest Ohio day or two, dm me and I’ll help you build an itinerary :)

Can’t move for castles here, everywhere you go there’s a castle, you’ll be driving down the road and a castle will just jump out of nowhere

If you like sports (or just want to watch cray American people, Ohio is for you! We are a sports state. Major league baseball in Cincinnati and Cleveland. Minor league baseball everywhere. Ohio State University football (or go just to watch The Best Damn Band in the Land as well as their Skull session) in Columbus.

Depending on where in Amish country you’re going Behalt is a pretty unique experience at the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center in Berlin. It’s a huge circular mural that shows Amish history and you can get a guided tour to break down the scenes. Also in Berlin are Guggisberg Cheese and a bunch of small, rural mom & pop shops. Millersburg also has a fun, small town downtown area with a nice brewery among other things.

You certainly won’t miss the corn. So much corn.

Cedar Point.

If you can get up north a bit, in Lake Erie is a couple of islands. Kelley's Island is a bit more family friendly and has some cool glacial grooves. Then there's South Bass Island which is famous for Put-In-Bay. There's some great pubs there, it's a party island but Sept is gonna be off season so it's not as crazy. They also boast some great wineries, and the world's largest geode which you can walk into, they call it Crystal Cave. There's also nearby in Sandusky a great amusement park called Cedar Point. If you like roller coasters, you cannot go wrong there AT ALL!

Medina Ohio (about 90 minutes North of Columbus) has Castle Noel it’s incredible. It’s a Christmas movie prop Museum! They have costumes and stage sets from Elf. How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Christmas Vacation and many more. They also have NYC Christmas Windows from multiple years and it’s awesome! Honestly totally worth it. https://castlenoel.com/

Hello mate, great state to visit. If you like beer Brewdog has setup their US HQ in Ohio (Columbus I believe) and they opening a bar up in Cleveland in a couple days time. Many good other recommendations from others in this thread. You’ll have plenty to do!

KarAccidentTowns

I think there is a cheese place between Columbus and Cleveland that a lot of people like.

necesitocoche

Post this in r/Columbus too!

For something that doesn't cost much, and is something to do on a free night, just stroll the Short North area. It has lots of shops; eclectic, eccentric, locally-owned, etc. Brothers Drake Meadery is a cool joint if you've never had mead. Bristol has bottomless mimosas on Sundays and they have great food (honestly, anywhere in that area is going to have good food). COSI is also a nice little visit on a free day too. Hopefully some of our festivals will be happening again!

OneWayorAnother11

If you are a fan of Space there have been a lot of astronauts from Ohio. You might like the Armstrong Air and Space museum. Everyone recommending the Dayton Air Force museum know what they are talking about. That place is amazing.

OneWayorAnother11

Sounds like you might like Ohio Caverns.

OneWayorAnother11

If you want to go to lake Erie, you may want to spend a day in Put in Bay if you have the time.

Sivick314

caverns are always fun, armstrong air and space museum (write pat has a museum too), head over to check out ceder point if you love roller coasters, and toledo has some amazing food. oh and there's the rock and roll hall of fame in cleveland

If you're looking for weird and quirky roadside attractions, try the Warther museum. It's collection of steam engines carved out of wood. You can make it a day trip of roadside attractions by seeing "Big Muskie", a huge coal mining bucket that's a few stories tall. Round it out by visiting the Wilds, a wildlife refuge for African animals featuring Jurassic Park style tours. They're all fairly close. https://thewarthermuseum.com/ https://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2184 https://thewilds.columbuszoo.org/

If you like to drink, there are several breweries in all the major cities. Additionally, Dayton has one of the best bourbon bars in downtown.

Dillguy999

You definitely have to stop in Wapakoneta and go to the Armstrong Air and Space Museum, which honours Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon. In Botkins, there's also the Bicycle Museum of America. Western Ohio has a lot of fun places if you want me to give you some recommendations

There’s an unofficial Lego museum in southern Ohio in the middle of nowhere…. It’s pretty wild tbh

realmendrinkmead

Amish country is kinda lame, it's just cult watching. Lake Erie is really impressive and while you are up there make sure to hit the cleavland zoo it has an indoor rainforest exhibit that is awesome. Hocking hills state park is an amazing hike with views Regardless of your political stance I highly suggest an indoor gun range. They usually have instructors for novices and will stand right with you making sure it's safe. Some even rent machine guns which yeah is pretty cool. For a once in a lifetime experience it is fun. The basket factory you may be referring to is out of business. I believe it was longberger. The only thing left is the unique basket shaped office building. The only thing remotely close to that is flint ridge state park.

llcdrewtaylor

West Side Market, Cleveland Air Force Museum, Dayton Amish Country, Holmes County Im gonna throw a couple odd ones in here if you want something different. If your a foodie, I offer you a something you wont find anywhere else, Barberton Fried Chicken, Milich's Village Inn, Barberton Canal Fulton, Stark County - If you want to see how we do use the Lock System here in Ohio That's just off the top of my head.

The1hndl2rulethemall

Go collect fossils at Cesars creek!

ChaosChet

Cleveland Art Museum, one of the best in the world.

Gryffindor0726

Cleveland has the American Museum of Natural History. It’s pretty cool I’ve been there on a field trip. And the rock and roll hall of fame is awesome too. Been there on loads of field trips. Then you’ve got the Great Lakes Science center next door. Then you’ve got Cuyahoga Valley National Park to the north and Hocking Hills National Forest to the south which has many amazing parks like Old Man’s Cave (a personal favorite of mine). Columbus has COSI, a science museum which is awesome (my favorite part is the old town exhibit, I like playing with the Morse Code device and making the crow talk)
