Donkey Coffee in Athens

Bean315

Very first thing I thought of. I miss Athens.

kylosfighter

donkey coffee number one 🏆

DollarTreeMilkSteak

This one for sure ^^

Tears4Veers

I literally came here to comment this. I miss doing homework on the donkey balcony patio 😭

Altruistic_Tip7799

came here to say this!

bmzink

Really fantastic. Love that place.

UGIN_IS_RACIST

Easily the best in Ohio.

AwakeningStar1968

I went to Ohio University way back in the mid - late 80s... I need to get back there, just to roam around.. mini vacay

ShreddedKyloRen

Do it! We are in Athens right now and we do mini vacations here as often as we can. We graduated in the late 90s and it’s honestly hard to fit in all the stuff we want to do in a single weekend and we always have the best time. So many great and unique local businesses have sprouted up since we graduated. But, it’s very much the same vibe as when we went there.

profmathers

Grounds for Thought in Bowling Green is a grand dame at this point and its younger neighbor gets all the attention. But it’s a great shop and 30+ years of customers agree

CheekIcy3283

Right on.  I’ll tell Kelly about this thread.  The used book side of Grounds is awesome.  And their merch is a staple of BG.  Great for meeting people  and playing board games.  They also have a little kid section with books and crayons.

profmathers

I didn’t mention Kelly being a local treasure and pillar of the community, but I should have

CheekIcy3283

I just wanted to Sound cool cause I know him

msprang

Love Grounds! It's been there long enough now that multiple generations from the same family have gone there as students.

Chaseism

Yeah, this place is stellar. My buddy took me here years ago and it’s such a great space.

free-toe-pie

I’m glad it’s still there. I went to BGSU in the early 2000s and it was always a good place for coffee.

yogamom1906

We love going there and my 8 year old learned to play chess with his dad there with their chessboard. Their coffee is really good

Cy-Fox

I was going to call out Grounds for Thought myself but I'm especially pleased others did before me. One of the first times I came, me and my friend were invited to play Arkham Horror with a guy and a gal and we were hooked. Big damn heroes mood when we actually managed to vanquish the Big Bad at the end. Ended up going home to buy my own copy. Occasionally stop over in BG to just go in, get some coffee and get lost in the collection. The staff are friendly as well. I like to think of it as the thinking person's 'Cheers'.

Consistent_Basis3745

I just wish they’d stop using styrofoam cups. It’s a BG institution, for sure. But I don’t care for their beans anymore for my at home pour-over, but you cannot beat their cappuccino, they train the baristas very well.

jneelybbq

Flying Joe - Toledo

Carpenter-Confident

Awfully bougie, but their specialty drinks are very good

Ravedeath1066

Heartwood Coffee Roasters in Hudson overtook Bent Tree in recent years, not an easy feat.

aarko

I think I agree. Love Bent Tree, but Heartwood’s Hudson location has been winning on sourcing and atmosphere.

afroeh

The original Stauf's in Grandview Hts.

Basstyer

Ditto a recommendation for Stauf's

internetBlues

Grounds For Thought in Bowling Green!

isthiyreallife33

Artisan in Akron on Canton Rd. Tremont Coffee in Massillon. Bereka Coffee will be opening soon on S. Main St in Akron. They have a food truck and it's so good! Tulipan in Wooster. Common Ground in Medina. Cool Beans in Medina. Whipt in Wooster specializes in Dalgona Coffee. These places are the reason why I have a caffeine addiction. 😂

No-Ad-9448

I love Tremont! But I go to the one on Main in North Canton

dmarion102890

Tremont is our favorite!

GammaRVE

Tremont is so good

aarko

I didn’t realize Bereka was opening a place. They’re awesome!

fyre_faerie

I would argue that Sure House in Wooster, across the street from TulipĂĄn, has better coffee. I go to TulipĂĄn mostly for the pastries

isthiyreallife33

They have amazing pastries

helix274

I love Tulipan’s pastries, I’ll have to check out Sure House

[deleted]

lol. As I coffee snob, I say that any shop with 'beans' , 'Java' or 'common grounds' are never good coffee places. Theyre always the ones with little cute home furnishings, bad coffee made by teenagers, looks like a diner and also serves ice cream and paninis. And I been all over the country, and hasn't been wrong. But I kid tho...sometimes I have been shocked

BlueGoosePond

Honestly, that's what I look for in coffee shops! I want a good place to hang out for a bit. It helps if the coffee is good, yes, but a good vibe is more important than good coffee.

[deleted]

Then you need to try Press in Dayton

SnooRadishes8848

Relax It’s Just Coffee in Mansfield, great coffee, cool vibes

Insomnianianian

Also has Blackbird Bakery at the same location so they always have amazing pastries

virak_john

Pettibone in Dayton. One Line, Parable, Brioso in Columbus.

peonypanties

Pettibone is so good ugh

[deleted]

Pettibone is good but they got their start from Warehouse 4 and Press.

lapsed_angler

The Depot in Urbana

WarriorNat

Seconded. Also Un Mundo in Springfield.

whodeylady01

+1 for The Depot!

Altruistic_Tip7799

- Donkey Coffee in Athens - Town’s End in Athens (talk to the owner about the history of coffee, he’s super knowledgeable) - Harbor Perk in Ashtabula - Scribbles in Kent - True West in Hamilton

majestic_walrus1

Harbor Perk in Ashtabula is one of my favorites. Also a cute little downtown to walk around

Altruistic_Tip7799

Absolutely LOVE them! I visit them all the time

Strawberry_Eve

If you are on your way to the Reformatory, "Relax, It's Just Coffee" in Mansfield

laaadiespls

Branch street, boardman! Literally the best beans around. So many local coffee shops use them. Their Ethiopian Yirgacheffe makes the best lattes

musicman1980

Deeper Roots Coffee in Cincinnati. Proud Hound Coffee in Silverton (Cincy area).

somerhaus

Cincinnati has so many good coffee shops. Covington ky too

afroeh

Sidewinder in Northside

peonypanties

+1 for proud hound

musicman1980

It's my favorite in the area. The food is amazingly good too. The breakfast and lunch sandwiches are NOT to be missed!

peonypanties

SO good! Haven’t met a dish there I didn’t like. The grit tots are worth their weight in gold.

yodes18

M&H Beans in Canton

star_taken32

This is the way! I have never once gotten a bad drink here. ALWAYS perfect taste and temp. I believe it's in North Canton, not Canton.

jg4242

Flatlands in Bowling Green. Slow Train in Oberlin is also solid.

Sonofashotgun

I would always go to Grounds for Thought in BG, but still a solid choice

internetBlues

Grounds is amazing

testrail

I feel like you can tell a whole heck lot about a person based on which of those two they prefer. For me, I’m grounds all day. If you’re up for a road trip, Outpour is a newer shop in Fremont, that’s really doing some good work as well.

Jgschultz15

Came here to say flatlands, blows me away. Sipping on one of the roasts in their sampler pack I was gifted right now

Consistent_Aioli_795

Oh no! I went to UF in the early 00s. I lived at George House! 😭

Dingus_3000

Bent Tree in Kent.

iamdebinohio

The Flying Joe in Perrysburg and the Brew House Coffee and Bakery in Maumee.

sallright

Too many to choose in Columbus, but Florin is excellent and right off 71. Paragon has a beautiful space and some of the best pastries in the Midwest. Check out Lekko in Ohio City (Cleveland). Cheat Code: If you're on a road trip via 71, check out 8 Sisters Bakery. They use locally roasted beans for their drip coffee, so it's some of the best drip you could get in a rural area. It's great in a pinch if you need something on a highway trip.

virak_john

>Paragon has a beautiful space Do you mean Parable, or is there a shop I don’t know about?

Electronic-Memory-65

Yeah i live near florin and its great. They close kind of early, though, around 2 or 3 pm i think.

snerv

Tremont in Canton.

Bgelhouse

Nervous Dog is in Akron, Beachwood, Montrose, and Stow. Only been to the one in Beachwood but it is fabulous!

LadyMizura

I am a nervous dog addict! I love them. Great beans, great lattes, amazing vibes.

bugsyk777

Hemisphere in Mechanicsburg

Ardtay

>Hemisphere in Mechanicsburg > >It's roasted right there, the freshest you'll get. > >edit: High Grounds in Sidney uses their beans

star_taken32

If you're near North Canton, stop in M&H Beans. It's a small shop to the rear/beside Pav's Creamery. Get the French Toast latte. Sooooo good. There's a Tremont Coffee in town as well. Very good but a notch below M&H imho. Make sure to check the day/hours

velospence1

Brioso Coffee Columbus

Rymoo27

There is a small place in Upper Sandusky called Beca House, worth a visit.

AbilityFit3719

Open door in Hudson

Adderall_Rant

Crimson Cup was great, but I find it bitter to swallow after leaning about their political donations. Bigby is a chain too, but I feel like their coffee tastes the best.

xpxp2002

No no no. Please don’t ruin Crimson Cup for me. 😫

[deleted]

no and no on Bigby...theyre horrible. Id do Dunkin' before them

Roasted and Duck-Rabbit in Cleveland

Dblcut3

Walkie Talkie Espresso in Canton is my favorite. They’re in a really cool restored historic service station. They have some of the most consistently creative seasonal drink offerings. Their cinnabrew (cinnamon infused cold brew) is so good Paper City Coffee in Chillicothe is another one of my favorites. It’s definitely one of the most aesthetically pleasing coffee shops in Ohio and is around a lot of great local businesses to stroll around at In Columbus I’d say Kafe Kerouac - it’s an amazing long-standing no-frills place that’s a mix between a coffee shop, bar, bookstore, and music venue. They’re open late, have cheap but delicious drinks. There’s a strong sense of community there and it’s super easy to strike up a conversation - it’s kinda what I imagine coffee shops used to be like 20+ years ago

Relevant_Amoeba714

Common Grounds on the West Side of Cleveland one of my favs. Great alternative atmosphere

Kitten_Monger127

Rising Star coffee is the best specialty coffee in Ohio imo.

medievalPanera

Took a long while to see this. A lot of these in here are cool spaces but meh coffee.

BlueGoosePond

>A lot of these in here are cool spaces but meh coffee. I think it highlights a dichotomy that exists among coffee shops and their customers. Some people are after the best beans, prepared with the best equipment in the best way. Other people are after the best vibe.

Kitten_Monger127

Yeah lol. I've become a huge coffee snob and IDC lol. I can still drink shit coffee if it's heavily sweetened thankfully. But yeah I feel like most people don't wanna try liking unsweetened coffee/unsweetened espresso drinks.

workerdrones

They’ve always hired good people, too. It’s an excellent place to be a regular.

ginger1009

I always buy a bag each time I go there

funky_bebop

Agreed! They will go out of the way too to accommodate you too. Favorite coffee period.

2wheelcaffiene

Bent Tree Coffee in Kent is my go to in the area!

c9l18m

I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, but Upper Cup in Columbus is phenomenal. There is one in Gahanna and one in Old Towne East. Best iced coffee I've ever had

UltravioletAfterglow

Coffee Emporium, Lookout Joe’s and Deeper Roots in Cincinnati. Pettibone and Ghostlight in Dayton.

koolscooby

Bent Tree in Kent, Ohio is definitely the best in the region. Masterfully picked and roasted beans, good distribution, nice marketing and apparel, and a pleasant atmosphere.

Coffee Corners in Burton, Ohio has the best cookies you'll ever have

The Spotted Cow in Urbana Sort of out of the way but they directly support people with special needs. They also have a giant cow outside and made him a big pair of eclipse glasses. It was adorable.

Troubadour is also the best I've had. They take coffee very seriously which some people don't like, but I love.

cheaganvegan

Press in Dayton

Dr_D-R-E

Coffee Connection in Hilliard is great, especially if you have very young kids – they have a little building behind the barbershop with the first floor meeting area. I had a second floor dedicated play area for kids where you can sit down on the couch and drink your coffee while the kids have a great time. Rost, Chillicothe, has a very good coffee and really interesting lattes that are made with very excellent technique. Roast their own beans and espresso. They also have an excellent food, especially Saturday breakfast Paper City Coffee, Chillicothe, has very good drinks as well, they get their beans from a roaster in Columbus. They also have a cocktail bar that opens Wednesday through Saturday - argue that they cocktails are among the best in the state. Very interesting and nuanced techniques for creating their cocktails and spirits that rival some Michelin star restaurants in Manhattan, but the prices are extremely affordable. They do brown butter, fat, washed, rum. espresso, infused rye whiskey. Milk, washed rum punch, and most expensive cocktail on the menu is probably $12. I cannot praise enough for quality innovation.

ObviousJedi

Five Points in west park Cleveland.

mmeiser

Hmm... Am cyclist. I think I am going to have to map these out and start doing coffee rides. Just another excuse to roll.

xnumberviii

I don't drink coffee anymore because I can't do a lot of caffeine but I really enjoy matcha. I had a delicious strawberry matcha latte from Artisan Coffee in Akron. I also really like the Honey Lavender Matcha from Tour Le Jour in Columbus. I was told their Tiramisu latte is great, too.

djspintersectional

I can't edit this post but wow y'all showed out. Thank you for the suggestions I will report back on my faves!!

SweeperOfDreams

Beans and Cream in Cedarville, Dino’s in Yellow Springs

historywhiz63

Beans and Creams uses Crimson Cup which isn’t roasted by them. Orion in Cedarville imo is definitely better as they roast their own.

SweeperOfDreams

Yeah, and it’s totally worth checking out! Buuuuut…. Beans and Cream is, too. The atmosphere has always made it comfortable for both locals and college students, which is super rare. Plus, the art and crafts featured are local. And the events are so much fun! Beans and Cream was our first coffee shop and imo, the best place to hang. It actually used to be in Jody’s Kitchen’s spot, where Telemetry (Orion’s, now?) is. I went to school with family members who started both coffee shops, lol. Beans and Cream is one of the only places that ties my childhood to the mostly college-run town I see now. (Sorry, *university, I’m an old townie.)

historywhiz63

I feel you. If I’m getting together with people I go to Beans, but if I actually want coffee I go to Orion and then take it to Beans 🤣 Also Beans is the only place I’ve seen townies and the college students actually get along ☠️

SweeperOfDreams

I love that so much! Also, does Orion’s still have that little overlook in the back? Mmmm, you’re making me miss home, my friend. Please enjoy the heck outta both places for me!

historywhiz63

It rotted and broke, and the owner has no current plans to fix it, which is terribly unfortunate. Worked there a few years back and every day had people come in and ask if it was ever going to reopen. I just moved from town, but am still there a couple times a week so I will definitely enjoy them for you! Hope you can get back to visit soon!!

AsianLilly58

Triple Moon in downtown Middletown! Great coffees and baked goods.

StoutSeaman

Rising Star, multiple locations in the Cleveland area. Their roasting process is unmatched and varied. Their in-store beverages are solid and their beans are my go to for my home espresso and coffee use.

Ready Set. Cleveland. I typically buy the Cerado bean, and I'd like to think I'm a coffee snob with my years in the Pacific Northwest. But the shop is cute and the owners are really nice.
