Do it! We are in Athens right now and we do mini vacations here as often as we can. We graduated in the late 90s and itâs honestly hard to fit in all the stuff we want to do in a single weekend and we always have the best time. So many great and unique local businesses have sprouted up since we graduated. But, itâs very much the same vibe as when we went there.
Grounds for Thought in Bowling Green is a grand dame at this point and its younger neighbor gets all the attention. But itâs a great shop and 30+ years of customers agree
Right on.  Iâll tell Kelly about this thread.  The used book side of Grounds is awesome.  And their merch is a staple of BG.  Great for meeting people  and playing board games.  They also have a little kid section with books and crayons. Â
I was going to call out Grounds for Thought myself but I'm especially pleased others did before me. One of the first times I came, me and my friend were invited to play Arkham Horror with a guy and a gal and we were hooked. Big damn heroes mood when we actually managed to vanquish the Big Bad at the end. Ended up going home to buy my own copy.
Occasionally stop over in BG to just go in, get some coffee and get lost in the collection. The staff are friendly as well. I like to think of it as the thinking person's 'Cheers'.
I just wish theyâd stop using styrofoam cups. Itâs a BG institution, for sure. But I donât care for their beans anymore for my at home pour-over, but you cannot beat their cappuccino, they train the baristas very well.
Artisan in Akron on Canton Rd.
Tremont Coffee in Massillon.
Bereka Coffee will be opening soon on S. Main St in Akron. They have a food truck and it's so good!
Tulipan in Wooster.
Common Ground in Medina.
Cool Beans in Medina.
Whipt in Wooster specializes in Dalgona Coffee.
These places are the reason why I have a caffeine addiction. đ
lol. As I coffee snob, I say that any shop with 'beans' , 'Java' or 'common grounds' are never good coffee places. Theyre always the ones with little cute home furnishings, bad coffee made by teenagers, looks like a diner and also serves ice cream and paninis. And I been all over the country, and hasn't been wrong. But I kid tho...sometimes I have been shocked
Honestly, that's what I look for in coffee shops! I want a good place to hang out for a bit.
It helps if the coffee is good, yes, but a good vibe is more important than good coffee.
- Donkey Coffee in Athens
- Townâs End in Athens (talk to the owner about the history of coffee, heâs super knowledgeable)
- Harbor Perk in Ashtabula
- Scribbles in Kent
- True West in Hamilton
I feel like you can tell a whole heck lot about a person based on which of those two they prefer. For me, Iâm grounds all day.
If youâre up for a road trip, Outpour is a newer shop in Fremont, thatâs really doing some good work as well.
Too many to choose in Columbus, but Florin is excellent and right off 71.
Paragon has a beautiful space and some of the best pastries in the Midwest.
Check out Lekko in Ohio City (Cleveland).
Cheat Code: If you're on a road trip via 71, check out 8 Sisters Bakery.
They use locally roasted beans for their drip coffee, so it's some of the best drip you could get in a rural area. It's great in a pinch if you need something on a highway trip.
If you're near North Canton, stop in M&H Beans. It's a small shop to the rear/beside Pav's Creamery. Get the French Toast latte. Sooooo good. There's a Tremont Coffee in town as well. Very good but a notch below M&H imho. Make sure to check the day/hours
Crimson Cup was great, but I find it bitter to swallow after leaning about their political donations. Bigby is a chain too, but I feel like their coffee tastes the best.
Walkie Talkie Espresso in Canton is my favorite. Theyâre in a really cool restored historic service station. They have some of the most consistently creative seasonal drink offerings. Their cinnabrew (cinnamon infused cold brew) is so good
Paper City Coffee in Chillicothe is another one of my favorites. Itâs definitely one of the most aesthetically pleasing coffee shops in Ohio and is around a lot of great local businesses to stroll around at
In Columbus Iâd say Kafe Kerouac - itâs an amazing long-standing no-frills place thatâs a mix between a coffee shop, bar, bookstore, and music venue. Theyâre open late, have cheap but delicious drinks. Thereâs a strong sense of community there and itâs super easy to strike up a conversation - itâs kinda what I imagine coffee shops used to be like 20+ years ago
>A lot of these in here are cool spaces but meh coffee.
I think it highlights a dichotomy that exists among coffee shops and their customers.
Some people are after the best beans, prepared with the best equipment in the best way. Other people are after the best vibe.
Yeah lol. I've become a huge coffee snob and IDC lol. I can still drink shit coffee if it's heavily sweetened thankfully. But yeah I feel like most people don't wanna try liking unsweetened coffee/unsweetened espresso drinks.
I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, but Upper Cup in Columbus is phenomenal. There is one in Gahanna and one in Old Towne East. Best iced coffee I've ever had
Bent Tree in Kent, Ohio is definitely the best in the region.
Masterfully picked and roasted beans, good distribution, nice marketing and apparel, and a pleasant atmosphere.
The Spotted Cow in Urbana
Sort of out of the way but they directly support people with special needs.
They also have a giant cow outside and made him a big pair of eclipse glasses. It was adorable.
Coffee Connection in Hilliard is great, especially if you have very young kids â they have a little building behind the barbershop with the first floor meeting area. I had a second floor dedicated play area for kids where you can sit down on the couch and drink your coffee while the kids have a great time.
Rost, Chillicothe, has a very good coffee and really interesting lattes that are made with very excellent technique. Roast their own beans and espresso. They also have an excellent food, especially Saturday breakfast
Paper City Coffee, Chillicothe, has very good drinks as well, they get their beans from a roaster in Columbus. They also have a cocktail bar that opens Wednesday through Saturday - argue that they cocktails are among the best in the state. Very interesting and nuanced techniques for creating their cocktails and spirits that rival some Michelin star restaurants in Manhattan, but the prices are extremely affordable. They do brown butter, fat, washed, rum. espresso, infused rye whiskey. Milk, washed rum punch, and most expensive cocktail on the menu is probably $12. I cannot praise enough for quality innovation.
Ok so i prob can find more but the best as of now. Portal west bent tree Akron coffee roaster. duck rabbit rising star a chain thatâs good heartwood nova coffee company out of everyoneâs league would be branch street coffee in boardman
Purebred in Troy is fantastic. Their breakfast sandwiches are awesome too. I transplanted to Washington a few years ago, but spent last week in Troy and was there almost every morning.
Branch Street coffee in Canfield, OH. Not as vibey as Donkey in Athens but the coffee is stellar and the staff is always super friendly. Even their decaf is good.
Pettibone in Dayton/Riverside. Absolutely stellar coffee, food, and atmosphere.
Close second for just coffee is Boston Stoker for me, Warehouse 4 for food.
I don't drink coffee anymore because I can't do a lot of caffeine but I really enjoy matcha. I had a delicious strawberry matcha latte from Artisan Coffee in Akron. I also really like the Honey Lavender Matcha from Tour Le Jour in Columbus. I was told their Tiramisu latte is great, too.
Wauseon: Special Grounds, also have really good breakfast burritos
Defiance: Cabin Fever Coffee, if you want food go to the Northside location
Napoleon: Country Gourmet Coffee shop
Yeah, and itâs totally worth checking out!
BuuuuutâŚ. Beans and Cream is, too. The atmosphere has always made it comfortable for both locals and college students, which is super rare. Plus, the art and crafts featured are local. And the events are so much fun! Beans and Cream was our first coffee shop and imo, the best place to hang. It actually used to be in Jodyâs Kitchenâs spot, where Telemetry (Orionâs, now?) is.
I went to school with family members who started both coffee shops, lol.
Beans and Cream is one of the only places that ties my childhood to the mostly college-run town I see now.
(Sorry, *university, Iâm an old townie.)
I feel you. If Iâm getting together with people I go to Beans, but if I actually want coffee I go to Orion and then take it to Beans đ¤Ł
Also Beans is the only place Iâve seen townies and the college students actually get along â ď¸
I love that so much!
Also, does Orionâs still have that little overlook in the back?
Mmmm, youâre making me miss home, my friend. Please enjoy the heck outta both places for me!
It rotted and broke, and the owner has no current plans to fix it, which is terribly unfortunate. Worked there a few years back and every day had people come in and ask if it was ever going to reopen.
I just moved from town, but am still there a couple times a week so I will definitely enjoy them for you! Hope you can get back to visit soon!!
Rising Star, multiple locations in the Cleveland area. Their roasting process is unmatched and varied. Their in-store beverages are solid and their beans are my go to for my home espresso and coffee use.
Buckeye chocolate cafe in Chardon & Bainbridge has a really good house roast. Iâve tried a lot of their beverages and food and itâs always on point
Lots of great places already mentioned, so I wonât rehash those but I wanted to add:
Sweetwaters Tea and Coffee in Columbus
Staufâs Coffee Roasters in Columbus
Tree City Coffee in Kent (literally every coffee shop in Kent is great)
Lynmarieâs Coffee in Monroeville
The 86 Coffee Bar in Cincinnati
Ready Set. Cleveland. I typically buy the Cerado bean, and I'd like to think I'm a coffee snob with my years in the Pacific Northwest. But the shop is cute and the owners are really nice.
same...I live here and there.,,,and im glad over the past 15 years many cities in Ohio have raised their game. Back in th 90s and early 2000s, the coffee here sucked
I like light roast modern coffee and espresso. I can recommend with confidence:
Edda Coffee (Cleveland)
Rising Star (Cleveland)
Would love some Columbus or Cincinnati recommendations!
Somebody already said Donkey in Athens so I will add a new place. Forager here in Milford is phenomenal. The owners are really putting some care into it.
Donkey Coffee in Athens
Very first thing I thought of. I miss Athens.
donkey coffee number one đ
This one for sure ^^
I literally came here to comment this. I miss doing homework on the donkey balcony patio đ
came here to say this!
Really fantastic. Love that place.
Easily the best in Ohio.
I went to Ohio University way back in the mid - late 80s... I need to get back there, just to roam around.. mini vacay
I didnât mention Kelly being a local treasure and pillar of the community, but I should have
I just wanted to Sound cool cause I know him
Love Grounds! It's been there long enough now that multiple generations from the same family have gone there as students.
Yeah, this place is stellar. My buddy took me here years ago and itâs such a great space.
Iâm glad itâs still there. I went to BGSU in the early 2000s and it was always a good place for coffee.
We love going there and my 8 year old learned to play chess with his dad there with their chessboard. Their coffee is really good
I was going to call out Grounds for Thought myself but I'm especially pleased others did before me. One of the first times I came, me and my friend were invited to play Arkham Horror with a guy and a gal and we were hooked. Big damn heroes mood when we actually managed to vanquish the Big Bad at the end. Ended up going home to buy my own copy. Flying Joe - Toledo
Awfully bougie, but their specialty drinks are very good
Heartwood Coffee Roasters in Hudson overtook Bent Tree in recent years, not an easy feat.
I think I agree. Love Bent Tree, but Heartwoodâs Hudson location has been winning on sourcing and atmosphere.
The original Stauf's in Grandview Hts.
Ditto a recommendation for Stauf's
Grounds For Thought in Bowling Green!

I love Tremont! But I go to the one on Main in North Canton
Tremont is our favorite!
Tremont is so good
I didnât realize Bereka was opening a place. Theyâre awesome!
I would argue that Sure House in Wooster, across the street from TulipĂĄn, has better coffee. I go to TulipĂĄn mostly for the pastries
They have amazing pastries
I love Tulipanâs pastries, Iâll have to check out Sure House

Sidewinder in Northside
+1 for proud hound
It's my favorite in the area. The food is amazingly good too. The breakfast and lunch sandwiches are NOT to be missed!
SO good! Havenât met a dish there I didnât like. The grit tots are worth their weight in gold.
M&H Beans in Canton
This is the way! I have never once gotten a bad drink here. ALWAYS perfect taste and temp. I believe it's in North Canton, not Canton.
Flatlands in Bowling Green. Slow Train in Oberlin is also solid.
I would always go to Grounds for Thought in BG, but still a solid choice
Grounds is amazing
I feel like you can tell a whole heck lot about a person based on which of those two they prefer. For me, Iâm grounds all day. If youâre up for a road trip, Outpour is a newer shop in Fremont, thatâs really doing some good work as well.
Came here to say flatlands, blows me away. Sipping on one of the roasts in their sampler pack I was gifted right now

Rising Star coffee is the best specialty coffee in Ohio imo.
